M1530 Heatsink Repair

I have an older XPS M1530 laptop that has only been used in the past 3-4 years. The fan seems to always run - and loudly - so I didn't use it much. But now I need it. I followed the advice in this blog and cleaned the cooling fan and replaced the thermal compound (Using Artic Silver 5). But when I reassembled, and tried to power on the computer will start for about 2-3 seconds, and then just shuts down. Any idea what I've done wrong?

Inspiron 5758 Crackling Sound

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 5758 around June 2015 and I've been noticing sound problems. I looked up the problem and thought I had found a fix in disabling and uninstalling  Dell Power Manager and it did help dramatically, but the sound is still crackly and jerky at points in both the headphones and internal speakers. It doesn't happen every time I'm playing music or sound but when my computer works harder it tends to happen more often. I upgraded to Windows 10 a week or so after it came out and I cannot remember how good my sound was before Windows 10, it might have been the same, or fine.

Thanks for any help!

I have a dell 14z 5423 i7 laptop that won't go past dell logo on post. I was told by dell it needs a new motherboard. Has anyone else had to replace the motherboard? If so, what is the part # and where did you purchase your part? Thanks in advance. Laptop is not under warranty.

Since i bought my laptop Dell 3543 I got very strange problem with sound. My speakers/headphones play very loudly until i change system volume(it doesn't change by itself, just sound is much louder). After that they play normally. It happens after they are not playing for a while. For example when I am watching something on YouTube and I change videos. They are idle for short time and it starts again and I have to change system volume. My sound driver is up-to-date. I was searching for this problem in google but hadn't found any solution. I would be very grateful if somebody could help me.

INSPIRON 7720SE 17R - what notebook adapter is required for 3940XM CPU (Extreme Edition CPU)

Would I need a 130W notebook power adapter or the 150W? I would prefer the 130W if it will work without problems, because I assume it would be smaller.

Inspiron 15-3543 - wifi problems under Windows 10 Pro - cannot reconnect after power down and reboot

Problem: “New” Inspiron 15-3543 i5 laptop with touch-screen cannot reconnect to wifi after “full power down” and ‘reboot’.  The unit was originally running Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and immediately upgraded to Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) upon purchase.  System was not operated (by us) under Windows 8.1 so we cannot verify this problem under Windows 8 – only windows 10. This laptop was an “Open Box” sold by Microcenter (Denver) and was SUPPOSED to have the ‘full Dell warranty’ but apparently the unit was ‘previously registered’ to someone else, so we cannot seek Dell support for this problem (even if Microcenter sold it as ‘full one-year Dell warranty...).  This unit was apparently 'factory reset' and re-sold by Microcenter as “Open Box”.  All operation is seemingly excellent with the exception of being able to maintain a 'dependable' wifi connection to a brand new Linksys EA3500 router.  An ‘old’ Lenovo i3 B590 (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) has absolutely no problems reconnecting to the wifi access thru this router, but this "new" Inspiron simply cannot "maintain" a dependable connection, regardless of what we try..  CAVEAT:  IF a connection is established via the Linksys, it will maintain this wireless connection UNTIL the laptop is 'powered-down' and re-booted – or if or if the Linksys EA3500 is 'rebooted' (router is ‘powered down’ every night by owner …).  Of course, the problem is that, when attempting to 're-connect' to the wifi after a 'power-off' and ‘re-boot’ (or the router has been powered down and restarted) Windows 10 cannot even 'detect' the wifi SSID, although other devices ( Lenovo i3 laptop, Ipad and 'smart phone') are easily reconnected and Internet access is available and usable...   I've tried the two "most likely" things that occurred to me to troubleshoot the problem, mainly: deleting the previously successful wifi connection thru network management app in Windows 10, and then attempting to reconnect (.. SOMETIMES this is successful), or deleting the wireless network device from the Device Manager and  're-installing' it (successful SOMETIMES, as well ...) …. or some combination of these two when neither seems to help all by themselves…  What truly confuses me is yet another observed indication:  we can witness that the wifi device ‘toggles’ between ‘on’ and ‘off’ when we click on “network and sharing center’ (clicking the wifi icon next to the time in the taskbar), which reflects that the wifi is ‘not available’.  Click this icon, and wifi is ‘available’, but the ‘network and sharing center’ also shows that the wifi adapter is ‘turned off’. Turn it ‘on’ in ‘sharing center’ and the wifi is ‘unavailable’ again via the wifi applet.  This leads me to believe some ‘disconnection’ in coordination between ‘hardware interface’ and software / applet control.   So, I’m looking for assistance with this problem from others that are 'more knowledgeable'.

The owner absolutely LOVES the Inspiron and does not want to return it (thankfully, we bought a 1-year 'no questions asked' return warranty when we bought it from MIcrocenter just BECAUSE it was "Open Box" ...), but not having a dependable wifi makes this laptop "problematic" to say the very least.  There is seemingly no ‘definitive’ fix to this problem other than to simply 'play around' with wifi connection management in Windows 10, and/or deleting the device from the Device Manager. EVENTUALLY it is possible to configure and connect to wifi - but this immediately disappears after the laptop has been powered down and then rebooted … or the Linksys router is powered down and rebooted.  Also noted: simply 'rebooting' after successfully connecting to wifi WILL show that the wifi IS available and operable  (tested repeatedly, SEVERAL times during troubleshooting) and it seems to work great – that is, until the laptop powers down and tries to reconnect after some period of time has passed.  I believe this is some 'combination of problems' with either the wireless device itself (simply says "Dell wifi adapter" in the Device Manager) OR something to do with either Windows 10 or the ‘upgrade’ to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1….  Since the wifi IS quite capable and ‘fast’ when it does deign to work, I’m hesitant to believe it is simply a ‘hardware problem’ (although it certainly could be..) – more likely, something about the ‘interface’ between Windows and this hardware.  Input on other things to try…?

XPS 9550/4k/SSD/84WH Battery Life

$

The XPS 9550 gets about 9hrs battery life while TOTALLY idle, with minimum screen brightness (always on), and about 5hrs battery life with max screen brightness (always on). (CPU usage checked and is essentially zero during this test.)

Yet Dell claims '10 to 17hrs' of battery life while actually doing something.

For comparison, my Dell XPS 9530/3200x1800/SSD/91WH laptop runs 17hrs and 11-12hrs under the same conditions.

Is this normal? And is it the screen with such a huge battery drain or something else?

And the 9550 has much lower battery life in side by side comparisons for video playback, surfing identical web pages, etc. Seems there is a penalty for skylake CPU's in actual practice, or something is drowning out the advantages.

FYI - I use this easy idle test as a measure of 'best case battery life'. I do understand it will be less in actual use, but the 9550 battery life drops like a lead balloon.

Inspiron 5520 Screen Transparent Blue

Hi,

My Inspiron 5520 screen has started to turn a bright blue depending on the angle of the screen. The blue is see through - you can still see and use the computer normally, just with a blue overlay in different sections. I can sometimes get the blue to go away by adjusting the angle of the screen. I'm guessing it's some kind of short or cable issue between the base of the computer and the screen? Anyone have any ideas? I've tried researching but only find "blue screen of death" which seems to be more like a solid blue screen.

Thanks!

Does Vostro 3750 have SATA III (6Gb/s) Interface?

Does this model run at the 6Gb/s rate for an SSD?

Just to be clear, I am not asking if an SSD will work with my laptop – I assume it will work as it has the standard SATA interface.  My question is: is the laptop capable of exploiting the faster SATA III 6Gb/s speed, or will they actual run at a slower SATA II speed?

On finger touchpad

Hello everybody,

I recently purchased a dell inspiron 5558 laptop, and I'm pretty annoyed with the touchpad. I would like to have the one finger scroll functionnality (scrolling with the right side of the touchpad), but I didn't found any option to do that.

I tried to reinstall the dell mouse driver, and the synaptics driver from the synaptics website, but there is still no options.

Following forums topics found on internet, there should be a "device settings" tab on the mouse properties window, allowing me to change the touchpad options, but even after the reinstallation af the drivers, the tab is still missing.

Is there any possibility to have this tab/get back the one finger scrolling functionnality ?

Best regards,

Dell 15 3521 claims battery isn't a Dell

$

I have a one year 46 day old Inspiron 3521 laptop. On boot it says  it cannot identify the battery and it will not be charged.

The built in Diagnostic says the battery isn't a Dell; It is.

The Bios says it doesn't recognize the battery.

Adapter error are turned on but the adapter is functioning normally.

I tried a new battery with the same results.

Support assistant ran a full diagnostic and found no errors.

I've reset the Bios to factory default  as recommended in multiple locations with no change.

I removed the battery and completed a power drain shutdown. It worked once but on the next boot the error returned and I have not been able to repeat the errorless boot since that time.

It was recommended that I update the BIOS but when the update program starts it says there's no battery and terminates.

I have no idea what to try now.

Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 Repair

I want to repair my Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 completely (including Hardware, Body, Screen, RAM, SSD etc.). I bought my Laptop from India. I live in Etobicoke, Ontario. Dell Technical Support always toss my calls back and forth in India and US. I have talked to Dell Technical Support 5-6 times, but they've never addressed my issue. My laptop is completely damaged as it fell off from a Table. Hinge is broken, Screen does not work. Lower part of laptop is broken. It's been six months since I used my machine.

Is it possible if I have a chance to repair my laptop and resume my projects? Any suggestions are welcome, Thanks.

Issue with charging battery

$

I own a Dell Inspiron N411Z laptop. Last week I purchased a new battery because my old one would not charge beyond 35% (the maximum charge decreased everyday over a period of two months). The new battery worked fine for a day or two before it stopped getting charged above 50%. I followed the advice in another discussion on this forum on a related issue. I drained my battery to zero (until the laptop shut down, disabling any form of automatic sleep/shutdown/hibernation on account of low battery) and removed it from the laptop for ~3 hours. Then I charged the battery with the laptop turned off for 4-5 hours. Now, although I can charge the battery to 100%, my laptop suddenly shuts down after about 1.5-2 hours of usage on battery even though the battery indicator shows about 50% battery level before shutting down. I can confirm that at this point, the battery had drained completely because the laptop fails to boot without plugging in the charger. After plugging in the charger and restarting, the battery indicator does indeed show 0% (and starts charging normally upto 100%).

Can someone advice me about what the issue is and what can I do to ascertain whether the battery is faulty, or the charger, or my motherboard.
