Dell XPS L502x BSOD even after Factory Reset

Dear all,

Happy Thanksgiving, first of all!

I've had my big boy, a XPS L502x since Dec/2011. Greatly satisfied with the great performance and yeah, durability! Too bad it couldn't be like that forever lol

So, about a month ago it had a BSOD, and from then on, more and more frequently, up to a point where it wouldn't turn itself on anymore. Tried a lot of stuff but finally, DellRecovery managed to backup my personal files and do a Factory System Restore. It was needing a cleanup, but I wouldn't image such a radical one hahaha
When I thought that was about it, not daring to think it could happen again, for my surprise...
BSOD again ._.

Well then; the blue screen img is attached. I've looked up for the codes, and in the few references to this problem itself, there aren't solutions (or which solutions were used [^o)]).
For now, all leads to the hard drive. I wanted to upgrade my boy, and a SSD drive would be perfect, but alas, I do not know what the problem, in fact, is. What leads me to this belief are:

  • I've ran the std Windows Memory Diagnostic and it found no problems.
  • I've installed Dell Support Center. It points to a problem in the HD, saying that "it detected 32 errors...", and recommends further testing. When I try to run it's own test, it freezes the Support Center program and shuts itself down.

Before running a more appropriate HD testing software (I believe I'll try the Seagate, after I get myself a CD to burn the test into...), would you guys recommend anything?

Moreover: is this kind of SSD drive suitable for my XPS? I have a 1,5Tb external HD, so I don't mind having small space on the internal one.

I just want to get over with this problem, and use my computer back again.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

SATA drive locked, can not pass BIOS

Hi,

With Dell Inspiron N7110 , WD SATA 640GB HDD, I have tried to clear all data with command:

hdparm --user-master u --security-set-pass llformat /dev/sdb

hdparm --user-master u --security-erase llformat /dev/sdb

This process was interrupted by empty battery and system was rebooted. BIOS asks for password of second HDD, and any attempt to enter password "llformat" has failed.

Without this hdd system is booting up normal. But even if I attach hdd on booted machine I could not get /dev/sdb again to remove protection via hdparm.

Have tried to set HDD password in BIOS and then to disable it. Tried to enter generated password for my product nr. GK4PSQ1 using BIOS passwords generators.

All this has filed to skip BIOS HDD password checking.

Does anyone have advice how to bypass bios checking so I can boot into system with other HDD and remove password via hdparam ?

Or maybe some other way to remove password ?

My guess is that BIOS do not try password in same form as hdparm.

Cleaning CPU from heat conductive paste?

Hello Dell forums,

I hope one of you can help with this question ...

I have just replaced the CPU in my Dell laptop and some of the heat conductive paste that is on the CPU that I removed has "spread" out on the back surface of the CPU and in-between some of the small components on this side. And, since the paste contains silver, I would like to find a way to clean it from the CPU backside without damaging the CPU.

My own thought has been to use Isopropyl alcohol, however, I don't know if this is safe for the CPU ... Any of you can help answer this - or suggest an alternative approach?

Thanks for any help [;)]

Dell XSP 15 9550 questions

I came from a Dell XPS 13 which had great keyboard/mouse driver support on Windows 8.1 and was wondering if the 15 had something similar? Specifically, I am looking for:

1) Fn keys to be media keys BUT become Fn keys when Alt is held. For example, they are media keys but pressing Alt + F4 closes a program, instead of Fn + Alt + F4 currently
2) A better touchpad driver that allows 3- and 4-finger swipe gestures to be customized

DELL E5550 - Partitions question

I bought a DELL E5550 with UBUNTU preinstalled. It had 5 partitions from what I remember:

EFI (500mb)

OEM/Recovery (40mb)

OS Partition (with Ubuntu I guess) 3GB

Partition 4: ~220GB

Partition 5: ~15GB

____

I installed Win10 (because I'm not interested in Ubuntu) and I removed only the last 3 partitions, leaving EFI and OEM alone.

My question now is: Is it possible to go do a Factory Reset anymore, going back to Ubuntu?

This was my idea of leaving EFI and OEM Recovery alone, because you never know when you will need this. But when I tried to go into recovery mode... screen remains black. I used F8, as I found on the internet. Did I destroyed something?

In this case, I would rather reinstall Win10 from scratch, using all of my SSD space, removing ALL partitions.

Any advice would be very welcome!

Does Dell 5000-series include Dell Touchpad Driver?

$

Can anyone with a Dell 5000-series laptop let me know if the touchpad runs with the traditional Dell Touchpad driver (an interface similar to the one shown below)?

I ask b/c I am returning an Inspiron 7000-series laptop due to poor touch pad performance.  I have seen many reports of touch pad issues on this forum but I do not think I am dealing with that issue.  Instead, the two-finger scrolling is poorly implemented.  There is no option to scroll using a side zone of the touch pad and the scroll is not smooth at all.  I'm hoping a touch pad using that Dell driver will perform better or at least include the additional options.

Hi everyone! I have no idea about techy stuff... hope someone can help me. I have the dell vosro 3500 running on windows 7.. worked fine... today i wake up and turn it on as always: windows error recovery. The options are: launch start up repair (when i do that it goes to a blue empty screen with a functioning cursor but no options or nothing i can do. I cant get to the task manager or anything... all keys i click do nothing except eventually forcing shut down by holding the power button. Also read about a sticky keys sollution... no matter how often i click shift no pop up comed up.) Or start windows normally (which then goes to the windows welcome screen, stays there for a while, then for 1 second the blue screen of death comes up and the computer reboots to the windows error recovery screen). Ive clicked f8 and tried safe mode...   it shows "loading windows files",  then the blue screen of death flashes again for a second and I'm back at windows error recovery. HELP! Ps- i have no cds to reinstall stuff, and i havent backed up some stuff on the laptop. I know... stupid me.

Hi had Win 10 on this system but crashed at last update was able to reinstall win 7 and am thinking about keeping it due to all the Win 10 issues i have had. Wondering when I start up i get a message concerning PXE-M0F, this message comes on screen and then goes away in a few seconds and Win 7 loads. I'm thinking that something is not right in the bios boot? I had to clear the HD using disk partition to get anything installed. And thing I may have something wrong.

Laptop hinge broken

The  hinge on my laptop broke which in turn made the whole computer come apart where it attaches, which also seems like it disconnected the antenna wires for my wifi because i am no longer able to get online. From looking it up online this seems to be a common issue. I got this computer for black friday last year so it hasnt even lasted a whole year yet. Is this something Dell will fix being that this is a common issue?

Dell Inspiron 3520had error message, restarted but wouldn't switch back on and now does 3 beeps when switched on

Hi hoping someone can help me.

Last night I was in bed on my laptop and I unplugged the power cable when all of a sudden an error message popped up saying Windows had to restart and it would automatically restart itself.. After the message continuing to pop up but not restarting I pressed the power button to do a hard reset myself. Unfortunately when I went t switch back on it wouldn't start, or it starts in the sense that you can hear the fans running and the power light comes on, but at first it was just a blank screen. i tried a few more times to boot it up and now after about 10 seconds I hear 3 loud beeps. I tried removing the battery and power cord and holding the power button down for 30 seconds before putting them both back in, but with no luck. Up until this my laptop was working perfectly fine, hoping someone can help me as I don't particularly have the facility to take it to a repair shop and not wanting to buy a new one!

Thanks!

Dell XPS13 L322X Drag Lock Won't turn off. Please help!

Hi,

I have been happily using the above laptop for a couple of years until a few weeks back when I got some Cypress trackpad software, which includes a draglock option. At some point I probably turned it on by mistake, but now it is stuck on permanently. This means that when I scroll or select some text, if I keep the mouse held down for more than a second or 2 then releasing the mouse has no effect, and when I move the mouse after that the selection/scroll continues to update as if the mouse is held down. Weirder still the same behavior still happens when I use a mouse.

I have tried reinstalling trackpad software. I have tried uninstalling the trackpad via device manager (though this didn't seem to do anything). I even tried updating to WIndows 10 (from Windows 7). Nothing seems to work.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Greg
