I have been looking for a thread involving mx17 r4 upgrades.  while I know that the 980m is the fastest supported video card for this laptop.  I have not found what the fastest processor this chassis can support and cool.  I have a 3rd gen i7 quad core and was things of going to 4th gen what ever the fastest option it will handle is.  I know its chipset limited and I don't expect to go to 5th or 6th gen i7 also the m2 is the mini size does anyone know if there is a 256 gb mini that will work in this system.  the half cards are harder to find especially in large sizes.

Forgotten/Lost "System" BIOS password on D630 Latitude- PLEASE HELP!!!

Howdy, from 90 miles north of Dell HQ in central TX.
I hap-hazardly built my first laptop from old broken-one's about a year ago & nstalled Ubuntu 14.04-64bit onto my 2X1.80ghz Dual core Latitude which was not in best tuning... anyway I accidentally deleted my partitions & was stuck in grub rescue for months as I learned Linux command-line... but apparently i drunkenly set a password which I sobered up & forgot. After spending almost a year in grub rescue> with no partitions, I finally built another Dell laptop (Inspiron) & was able to get a good install on the old Latitude- WITHOUT being able to even change boot sequence... but I'm dyin to get this password off so I can make much needed changes to BIOS, perhaps even removing 'it'. I build *** laptops out of has-beens and am SOLD on Opensource O.S.... I'm trying to paint a clear picture here...

...BECAUSE...
I've heard you guys charge $30+ for unlocking BIOS but I see here where several people's PC's were unlocked for free? Man... If only I were so lucky a fella... Can you help me if I provide service tag & pertinent info? Beer of your choosing on ice my friend.

I just bought Dell inspiron 15 5000 series November 6 and it doing nicely until last week because I think I'm just using it for watching movies and surfing the web and last week I install games like shadow of mordor, splinter cell, resident evil revelations 2 and  It works fine and after that I install steam dota 2, one piece pirate warriors and saints row IV and those three most of the time it freezes my screen, make the sound of tztztztztztz (I thought its broken when its like that) and keyboard wont work when the screen is froze or making the sound tztztztztztz. And when I restart it, it takes so long to boot not unlike when I first buy it only few seconds and I'm in the desktop already and its lagging every time I click something its lagging.

Does this laptop have problems playing those games? I mean this laptop have 8gb ram and 4gb graphics card,my graphics card are updated and I'm using windows 10. Does this laptop have internal problems of some sort or what?

Inspiron 1525 Vista does not start on first attempt

I am attempting to make serviceable a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop for a local charity. It was purchased at a car boot sale (for US forum members, it's a bit like a large public *** sale) and I have no idea of its history. I have restored the factory image from the recovery partition and, once booted up, the laptop seems to work well. Some of the front lights never come on and the touchpad buttons do not work so it isn't perfect but these problems are not important in use. However, the laptop almost always takes two attempts before it will boot up.

The first attempt very quickly gets past the Dell splash screen and then there is a horizontal progress bar and the words "microsoft corporation". The progress bar never stops but, having done a forced shutdown and restart, I get a screen offering me the option of a repair or a normal startup. The repair option takes a long time but ends by saying that a startup repair could not be done. Selecting a normal startup usually achieves this and subsequent startups soon afterwards also work properly. After an hour or more, the problem returns.

Any suggestions as to identifying or fixing this problem would be appreciated.

dell Inspiron 5521 beeps

hello..

I'm sorry if my post is at the wrong place.

my laptop is inspiron 5521 bought it back in 2013.

core I5

6gb ram

amd radeon graphics cards

windows 10

my issue is 1 beep when i turn on the laptop.

its been like this from day one, it wasn't really an issue at the beginning, what I used to do is press the power button till the laptop shut down (to cut the beeps) then turn it back on and that's it the laptop starts with no beeps.

but now its driving me crazy, if I turn off my laptop or restart it, and tried to turn it on again the beeps starts, what works for me is to keep pushing the power button on and off for about 40 minutes and some times more than 2 hours till the screen turn on and I can use the laptop.

I get 1 beep and after searching I found what it means. "One - Possible system board failure or BIOS ROM checksum failure"

and it didn't make any sense because after the long session of turning on and off the laptop and finally come to life everything works just fine.

I tried bios diagnostics and no issue where found.

I tried to update the bios version but I failed

I don't know what else to do.

.........

English is not my mother tongue; please excuse any errors on my part

thank you

Plight of purchasing Dell product

I have purchased dell computer which I found to be one of the worst computer of my life. It's monitor developed blue strip at the top panel for which full screen image could not be seen and subsequently there was SMPS malfunctioning for which it had to be changed. This company does not provide after sales service although they market substandard products. In my life neither I am going to purchase Dell product nor suggest any one to purchase any.

Vostro 3558 Ubuntu UEFI boot problem

$

I have bought a Vostro 2558 without an operating system. I have installed an Ubuntu 15.10 from a dvd to the hard disk. The installation seems to be OK, however, when I try to boot from the hard disk, UEFI finds no bootable device.

I have tried to set up the boot sequence as it is described here  in 3-5. I can identify the grubx64.efi file, but after I press OK, the Apply button remains "grey" (so I can not press it). When I reboot, UEFU "forgets" these settings, so it does not boot. What can be the problem. What can I do incorrectly?

Thank You for Your help!

ssd choices for 7710 precision workstation

$

I'm researching the purchase of a Dell 7710 Precision workstation. I'll be using the machine for 3D rendering; so I want the best possible speed. I'm looking at three hard drive options listed on the website:

  • 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive [Included in Price]

  • 256GB 2.5 inch High Performance SATA Solid State Drive [add $30.00]

  • 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe High Performance Solid State Drive [add $60.00]

I'm surprised to see a “High Performance SATA Solid State Drive” as a more expensive alternative to a “ M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive,” and my Google searches do not provide an answer to the question what is a “M.2 PCIe NVMe High Performance Solid State Drive.” Does "high performance" identify a brand? model? technology? I've been through two Dell chats so far, trying to get an answer to the question: Can you provide me with a link to the specific manufacturer/specs for each option?  I would like to be able to check reviews on each option in order to have some objective basis for selecting one option over another.  Apparently, Dell has a problem being able to identify the choices they post.  Does anyone have any insight?
