Windows automatic drivers' updates

After trials and experiments a lot of resets and restarts it is finally clear that Microsoft has done a good job on installing drivers' updates . Since the last time I did a super-clean installation of Windows 10 Home and did not use anything from the drivers and downloads page of Dell except the Quickset Application and the Touchpad driver all the components work fine until now .

So probably all those solutions to mess with the Device Manager etc. are not very useful since the Windows software does get correctly what it needs .

The dell inspiron 3542 is still under surveillance since the last clean install of W10 and two days now we are doing well . Maybe some sound/audio ups and downs but this is yet to be confirmed , some videos in youtube present anomalies .The touchpad is good.

Now a friend's laptop has similar issues it is from another company but we will find out soon if we can give a similar solution .

Keyboard Backlight settings on XPS 13 9343

Hello All,

I have a new Dell XPS 13 9343 Ultrabook. But I have a problem with keyboard backlight. I want my backlight to turn up only when I typing and then I want it to turn of after some time.

I searched the forums and the internet. I saw that there should be an option in the Windows Mobility Center but there is none. Does the QuickSet application is compitable with new XPS 13 series?

I could not find any drivers about this in the drivers & downloads page of the notebook.

This is very important for me. Could anyone point me right direction about this?

I bought a Dell 5558 i7 couple of months ago with windows 10 installed.

The laptop was running fine, until the windows 10 update couple of weeks ago, post which the CPU is running hotter. I had download an program to check the temperatures, it is running at 68 - 78 Celcius. The fan is constantly ON even when I turned the laptop ON after a 8 hour shutdown.

I did a system restore to before the install the temperature were then running at 45 - 59 celcuis. Anyone else having this issue ?

Any solutions ?

Thanks in advance !!

xps 13 9350 wont post

Brand new xps 13 9350 - booted a couple of times and windows activated, but now won't post.

The power light is blinking slowly - stays on for ~20 seconds then goes off, but nothing happens when it's on. Holding down the power button has no effect. Makes no difference whether the machine is plugged in or not, the battery has charge and I can get the screen to at least turn on (see below).

I can get the screen to flash colours by holding down the D key as it powers on, but not run the diagnostic tool by holding down the Fn key.

How do I go about trouble-shooting this? A support call followed by posting the thing straight back where it came from is likely to happen, but anybody have same problem and have some idea how to fix it?

I decided to reinstall win 10 from the scratch. Installed but now sometimes laptop does not wake up after sleep mode. So i need to click long on power button to restart system, witch means all unsaved links or docs will disappear. According to the google search problem is caused by video drivers! whatever i tried i could not make it work. Sometimes laptop not wake up after sleep mode :/

I tried restore my win 8.1 from PBR image but i cannot do it because windows 10 was installed from the scratch.

Please help with advice how can i solve this wake up issue..

file a complaint to the Dell headquarters

Hi everyone,

I have bought a laptop 2 months ago, the computer worked fine for the first month (otherwise i would have returned it) suddenly my processor fan stopped working, i ran the diagnosis and it was confirmed that it was not working and you know how dangerous that is, it could cause a fire. i called technical support, and they were helpful, they send me someone to replace my processor fan, and was a good experience. the same technician told me that my (mouse-pad / arm rest ) is not working properly and needs to be changed. I called Dell again and they sent me another guy to fix that problem.

the technician came to fix the problem (replace the armrest/Mouth Pad), he is basically had to remove all the unit of the laptop and reassembles them again into the new armrest.

I had to sit with the technician through out the process for 4 hours until he is done.

my comments about the service.

1- He got to my house around 8 pm (per his request) and he seemed pretty exhausted.

2- He kept loosing screw nails that he failed to replace during his trial to fix the laptop.

3- he kept putting wrong screw nails in the wrong holes, he ended up putting either bigger nails in small hales which made it only through half way and he kept it like that. Or too small nail into big hales so they keep circulating when you screw them and they never stop. because they are in a bigger hole.

4- He DID NOT Put all the required Nails in their place. he ended up LEAVING holes without any nails and he told me "they are NOT important, they were extras"

5- He was knocking on one of the holes trying to make it bigger enough to take a nail that was not meant to be in that hole.

6- He tore all the interior plastic parts.

7- he was so inefficient that he filled the mother board with scratches and empty holes (without nails Holes).

8- the interior of my 2 month old Laptop looks like at least a 5 year old computer now.

after such experience i started experiencing this.

my computer keeps giving commands by itself. it shuts down in the middle of my work and it seems like as if someone pressing against the screen. the settings keep changing by itself, ex. changing to pilot mood, changing to full screen desktop, or shuts down, as if there is something pressing against the screen or keyboard giving commands to the computer to do things randomly.

Now here is the complaint part.

I have emailed Ellen who is Dell Hardware Technical Support without any kind of response. i waited for few days with no response i decided to send another email to Alvin (supervisor at the technical support) He absolutely did not respond to me either. and now I'm stuck with a broken laptop that i just bought 2 months ago and i cannot find anyone who can help me.

If anyone knows what should i do, please reply to me. I'm pretty sure that this computer is broken now beyond repair and i deserve a new laptop that i have paid for.

I'm doing my doctorate now and a properly working laptop is essential to meet my deadlines and my projects. I'm trying to reach someone who can tell me how to file this complaint to the headquarters. and i completely find no way to solve this problem i will send a complain letter to the Dean of students in my University (MCPHS University in Boston, Ma) to complain about this experience.

Thank you all.

Dell Venue Pro 11 32Wh battery burst open

Has anyone else experienced having a 32Wh battery pack in their Dell Venue Pro 11 burst open. The lithium battery inside has puffed up like a small pillow and burst open the case of the battery.  The battery in question had progressively over the past several weeks stopped lasting more than a few hours of use.  Dell would not replace it stating it was beyond slightly 1 year.  We bought a new battery and replaced it. This was the pull out battery. I went to reuse the box that the replacement came in and found that the original battery that was placed into the shipping box had "burst". I am fortunate that it had not spontaneously ignited. I have tried repeatedly to get hold of Dell over the phone but the people in India answering the calls do not seem to understand that I am trying to report a possible defect in their batteries. I would like to know who there at Dell I can speak with that is here in the USA and deals with battery defects and possible serious issues (i.e battery recalls) due to fire risk. 30 minutes on hold for Customer Care is ridiculous!

Inspiron 14R (N4010) Doesn't Load Past Dell Splash Screen

Even after installing a new hard drive (SSD) instead of the traditional hard drive, my computer gets stuck at the Dell splash screen.

The loading bar gets about 2/3 of the way and then freezes.

The weird solution I have found is that I turn my laptop on its left side and press really hard on the CD Drive (right where the button is with my entire hand) while I boot up the computer. Oddly enough when I do this the CD Drive makes a clicking noise and it goes past the splash screen and I am able to boot up with no problem.

This is really annoying as it happens every time I boot up the computer. It is able to come in and out of sleep easily, but booting up the computer when it is shut down, this happens every time.

I have tried discharging the static electricity that builds up by removing the battery and unplugging the AC adapter and holding down on the power button for 30 seconds and it never works.

Has anyone had this issue that can resolve mine? I was going to open up the laptop today and find out what exactly is happening or what connection is being made when I press down on the CD tray but it would be much better and less of a pain to do that if someone could solve my problem.

Thank you.

XPS13 Battery replacement

Hi all,

I am thinking about buying a new powerful ultrabook, and the 16GB RAM version of the XPS13 is my main option. It is a very cool device!

However, having had a Surface Pro, this has made me think about something: In Surface Pros, the batteries (at least until Surface Pro2) cannot be replaced, not even Microsoft offers that service.

Knowing that the XPS13 is easily serviceable, as per iFixit:

My main concern about the device is if 2-3 years' time, when the battery is no longer functional, will I be left with a 1400£ laptop where the battery cannot be replaced? I have seen that it would be easy to replace by myself, but have not found any replacement online. And Dell has not commented on whether this is possible.

So my question is: I know that Dell will not offer to sell the battery for me to replace, but will they replace it (with a fee is warranty is over)? Or will they ask me to replace the whole computer?

Thank you very much

Updated BIOS and after it rebooted, it continually reboots. I see the Dell splash screen, and it displays press F2 for BIOS, F12 for Boot Options.

I've tried both of those, as well as F8, yet it continues to reboot.

I removed the battery and unplugged it. Pressed and held the power button for a minute, then plugged it in without the battery. No change.

I reseated both RAM modules, still reboots.

I disassembled and removed the HDD for a while, also pulled the CMOS battery for 10 minutes. After rebooting, received several beeps and messages about the clock being reset. After it rebooted a few times, the beeping stopped and the laptop continues to reboot.

Is there any other troubleshooting steps that can be performed? Any way to get back to factory BIOS?

The system is out of warranty, purchased in 2011. What other options are there?

I have an Inspiron M5010 that has a HDD password.  I know the password and do not have any issues accessing anything but I would like to disable that feature.  I have checked the BIOS and cannot see that there is anywhere to disable that feature.  Again, I have the password and can access everytihng, I just want to disable that annoyance.  Any help is appreciated!

Auto on from shutdown... Black screen... ***??

Hey there,

My inspiron 15z keeps coming on in the middle of the night even after I've shut it down properly.  When I open it, there's just black screen and I can't get it to do anything, so I have to turn it off with the power key.  It was running Win 8.1, now 10.  This has been happening for a couple of years, and since it's not under warranty, Dell won't really help.  Maybe someone here can?  TIA!

Touchscreen not working

I dell inspiron 15R (5537) laptop with touchscreen which was working until 2 weeks ago. Since then I upgraded to Windows 10.

I have checked device manager and there is nothing listed for touchscreen driver.

I have tried several times and updated the drivers from dell website.

I even uninstalled all of them and reinstalled through the Dell update tool.

BIOS is updated.

On windows setting info section shows there is no touch and pen device.

I even reset the system which installed windows 10 again.

I have tried all the methods available but touch screen is still not working.

Studio 15 --- Installing Drivers and Updates.

$

On the Dell website with IE on my Studio 15 I went to [General Maintenance] [Keep your drivers up to date]

I got a list of drivers and updates for my Studio 15 and saw that there is a recommended order of install. But all of the 11 download items listed do not seem to be labeled by those categories.

Q1 - Can I assume that the download list is shown in the recommended order -- top to bottom?

Q2 - Should I install one at a time and restart, or can I install all in one step?

Q3) - Do I have to be concerned about updating over the existing driver or application, or should I do some uninstalls first?

Q4) - Do I have to be concerned about installing over an item that is already up to date.

How to disconnect power adapter wires?

$

Hello,

I have a DELL XPS 13 9343. The power adapter is composed by three components: the adapter itself plus two wires: one from the adapter to the pc, one from the adapter to electricity. It seems that the wire between the adapter and the pc can be disconnected from the adapter itself. Is this correct? I just don't see where the advantage is: it is not stable enough (for it can be turned in different directions), but on the other side it seems to indisconnetable. I would like to know whether this is true or not.

Thanks in advance,

A.F.
