Inspiron boots...sometimes

Hi!

I have an issue with my Dell Inspiron 15 3521. It mostly beeps on startup and doesnt pass a POST. However, every couple of times it boots and OS is loading... And it works until next power off / restart. I can also suspend and resume without problems.

About beeping - it beeps once so I guess it may be a motherboard failure... I tried reseting the CMOS without success.

Is there a way to omit the POST test at boot time? Why, when it manages to start, everything is ok? May this be a false positive?

I run diagnostics test after it booted successfully once and all tests passed.


Ps. My warranty has ended about a month or two ago :(


Inspiron 17 - 7746 - Keyboard not working properly

Hi all,

Yesterday I booted up my laptop and found there seems to be a problem with certain keys on the keyboard.  For example when i press the letter 'C' airplane mode will turn on.  If I type the number '3' it will tab back a space and some of the other keys seem not to work at all.

The only way I can operate the system is by using the touch screen that works perfectly.

I done a factory system reset last night and the problem still exists, any ideas caus i'm starting to rip out my hair?

E7440 Power on issue

Hi all.

Having the following issue with the E7440.

Power light illuminates, goes off after 10-15 seconds. No display no POST codes.

Fault finding wise we have tried booting with no memory, HDD disconnected, Wifi board out, and fan incase one is pulling the laptop down. Battery swapped with working one has no effect. Only thing that worked was pulling the CMOS battery for a few seconds reseating. It then booted up but this only works temporarly. New CMOS battery doesnt fix it. Also replaced DC jack. Issue is on AND off power and port replicator.

Only way we seem to be able to fix this issue is by swapping system boards. Not ideal really im interested in finding a first time fix if anyone has had this issue before. All laptops onsite have new BIOS version.

We get average one a week with this issue. Nothing anywhere on the web Dell also seem unaware.

Dell XPS 1647 USB ports not working.

My USB ports are not working.  Appears to be hardware, When I look into the slot, one of the ports is completely busted and the other one only works intermittently.  Are there any adaptors that would give me USB functionality?  I.E  HDMI to USB or something like that.  I think replacing the hardware would be too expensive.  

i7352 won't wake up from external keyboard or mouse

I have a brand new Inspiron 7352 pre-installed with Windows 10 with a docking station and external keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Due to limited space, I would like to keep the laptop closed all the time and tucked away under a monitor stand. When the laptop goes to sleep, the only way to wake it is to open the lid and push the power button. I would really like to be able to wake it up using my external keyboard or mouse. I spent 90+ minutes online last night with Geek Squad help. Here is the conclusion they reached: when you open Device Manager and look at either the external keyboard or mouse, there are NO power options (unlike earlier versions of Windows?). This seems to be a limitation of this laptop + this version of Windows. Geek Squad suggested that I contact Dell Support and see if any fixes are available.

True Colour Error on start up with Windows 10 (or in my case help the aged!)

I have purchased a Dell Inspiron 17 5000 series and since upgrading the Windows 10 OS, on start up I continually receive the message "True Colour has failed to apply the requested settings, please reinstall", yet when I open this software it indicates that True Colour is running. Je suis tres confused.

I have spent a number of weeks running through the comments on the dell forums and applying the various software upgrades but to no avail. I have reinstalled the software twice and this hasn't helped either. Is there anyone out their who can help me. At the present rate I'm likely to stop running before I ever get True Colour to work properly. Or perhaps, it is and the error message is itself an error (how ironic would that be?). If the latter is the case how would I know

As I spiral into a vortex of despond with True Colour peering on and laughing (in a slightly sinister way) can anybody throw me a rubber ring so I have some chance of resurfacing amongst the waves of technology.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help. Save me from this nightmare..... (okay perhaps a little exaggeration).

I was looking over the internet and i can't find if my laptop suports gigabit internet or not....  on device manager it says Realtek PCIe FE family controller. I was trying to install gbe drivers but nothink happend... computer is pretty new, bought about 2 months ago

I was looking all over internet for a solution, why my internet is only capped at 100 mb/s i could't find any answer, i know about speed & duplex its only max 100mb/s. On device manager it says realtek pcie fe family controller, is there anyway to update it to gbe? bought pc about 2 months ago

Dell Inspiron 5558 USB 3.0 port not working

Hi Guys,

i have a new inspiron 5558 laptop, came with windows 8.1 and i upgraded it to win10 (x64) as i got it.

my problem is with the usb 3.0 prot, it is not reading any devices (external HDD for example).

i have tried to uninstall both the usb 3.0 driver and the USB root hub (xHCI) and also seperatly through the device managaer, however, once the uninstall process is finished i am asked to reboot. once the system is back after reboot and i go back to the device manager i can see the drivers are still installed.

i have also tried installing updated drivers but it doesn't let me. i get a message that i have the most up to date driver.

i am getting very frustrated from all of this, i would love to hear some suggestions here.

Number Keys don't work consistently in Latitude E5520

The HOME and END keys on the number pad area of my keyboard don't work consistently on my Dell Latitude E5520 when I'm using them NOT as numbers but as directional keys.  They work as they should in Lotus Notes, Outlook, Notepad, Windows Explorer and in some other software applications but they do not work correctly in forms in web browsers.  For example in while I'm writing this post when I hit the HOME key intending to move to the beginning of the current line I instead get the number 7 written at the cursor point.

This problem began when I reinstalled Windows 7 a second time on my laptop.  I believe I installed all the Dell drivers for my laptop correctly and even tried reinstalling the ALPS Keyboard Touchpad driver but it still won't work correctly.  I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and the behavior is exactly the same.

Dell XPS 12 (9Q33) after update to Windows 10 auto rotate no longer possible

Before migration to Windows 10 auto rotate was ok. After complete new installation to Windows 10 everything ok except auto rotate. I updated with all Dell recomanded drivers and BIOS update without success. I looked for similar entries in this community for

  • Windows 8.1: Issue is known but no way for Windows 10 solution.
  • Windows 10: 2 similiar entries found - but no solution provided there

So I would be happy to have good recommandations or solutions!

E6420 - Mouse Freezes

I just started using my refurbished Dell Latitude E6420. The mouse constantly frezzes and I am forced to re-start the laptop.

  • Is this something that is to be excepted with a refurbished machine?
  • What can I do to fix this problem when it occurs?
  • Is there a permanent fix for the freezing mouse?
  • Should I be checking into the process to return the laptop?
  • Am I asking all the questions I should be asking?
  • Am I asking the right questions?

Dell Inspiron 17 5000 Laptop Touch Pad Problem

When using my new Dell Inspiron, when typing the cursor would move from my thumbs touching the touchpad inadvertently.  The new touchpads are larger then in the past and this creates a problem when trying to type.  I tried everything, including trying to find the "Sensitivity Control" mentioned previously but I don't think the install touchpad is an Alps or Synaptics pointing devices.  Here's what I did to get it corrected.  A Dell hardware support technician gave me this Application to download and it worked!

Apparently, with the application, when typing the touchpad freezes.  Give it a try, it worked for my.

 

Inspiron N5030 screen replacement

Hi !

I was given a N5030 with a broken LCD screen. I bought a replacement LCD from someone with an Inspiron N5050 with bad motherboard. The LCD screen seems compatible but the LVDS ribbon cable is slightly different on the motherboard side, the N5030 LVDS cable is labeled DJ2 and has a 2x20 [ins connector while the one for N5050 is labeled DV15 and have 2x15 pins.  The connector is similar and is mechanically possible to plug the DV15 LVDS cable to the N5030 motherboard, though several positions are possible by shifting it laterally. Obviously I did not powered the laptop on since I do not want to destroy anything. I am somewhat reluctant to replace the lvds ribbon of the N5050 screen with the old one since the connector on the LCD side seems quite flimsy and protected under sticky tape. Furthermore the old LVDS cable is quite battered. I was wondering if anyone can point me to a pinout of those 2 LVDS cables, I would rather modify the cable on the side of the motherboard connector.

XPS 15 9530 Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 driver updates

My laptop is identified correctly. But then

1. The Dell driver detection app. is not working.

2. Making a download batch list is not working.

3. Individually downloading and updating drivers are working.

What do I need to change in the future to get #1 and #2 working?


Dell 3521 running TERRIBLY SLOW

So I have had a Dell Inspiron 3521 laptop for around 3 years, and I have wiped the hard drive, upgraded/downgraded windows over 13 times in all 3 years of me having the laptop. So I wiped the hard drive with Dariks Boot and Nuke and installed Windows 10. On google chrome, YouTube is laggy at 720p video. When I go into task manager it is only at around 40-70 percent. It can't be a virus, considering I JUST installed windows 10. My specs are : Intel Pentium CPU 2127U @ 1.90 GHz,

8GB RAM, 500 GB Hard drive *from another computer that i wiped* Intel HD 4000 Graphics

Alienware 17 R2 (Hasswell based) power limit throttling

Hi to everyone.

I got the common problem with my recently bought note ook Alienware 17 R2, equipped with 4710HQ CPU and GF980M videocard. The notebook is provided with a weak 180W PSU, which causes a lack of electric feeding in a games, so, CPU suffers power limit throttling, dropping its frequencies to 800-1200MHz. Accordingly, framerate dropping is significant.

I've read a lot of Alienware forums, and the solution is to exchange 180W psu to 240W. And, it was told, that if notebook is still on the warranty (just as mine), Dell makes the exchange for free.

Could someone tell me, what is the procedure? Whom should I turn to?

Spacebar on N5010 not working correctly

The spacebar on my Dell Inspiron 5010 is not working correctly anymore. I hit it primarily from the right side and every third or fourth space does not take correctly. Is there a way to remove it and clean under it or does anyone know of a different fix? The laptop works great and I don't think I need a new keyboard for what amounts to a dirty contact. Any help appreciated.

Black Screen with Red Line on my Dell XPS L502X

I have had a Dell XPS L502X laptop for about 2 years and I have been quite happy with it.  Although, about 2 weeks ago, randomly my screen turned black and a shimmering red line appeared close to the right side of the screen. It lasted for about 10-15 seconds and then went back to my normal screen. That happened twice in a row that day. I consulted my friend that has a great deal of knowledge of computers, and he said it was probably a hardware issue. Nothing happened until yesterday when the black screen and red line appeared again for the third time total. I am most worried because this is inconsistent. Does anyone know what is wrong? Is there something I can do other than take it to a repair shop?
