E6430 and mSATA again

Hi,

Two months ago , planning to format my e6430 with the intention of moving to Windows 10 , I tried to install a mSATA slot WWAN . A Samsung 840 124GB .

In the boot options appeared the option to start from mSATA . I unplugged mSATA , and restarted everything with normal hdd .

Yesterday I cloned the contents of the system disk on mSATA and I did the same thing again but was NOT possible to display the disk mSATA among the boot options.

When I made the test two months ago I had an old BIOS . Yesterday I updated everything and even the bios has passed the latest version 16.

I know that this notebook  not officially supports mSATA but as I have done tests and it worked. I bought an mSATA and now I do not know what to do . Dell has removed support mSATA with one of the latest BIOS ? Some idea?

I haven't played a Blu-Ray for a while but I decided I wanted to a couple of days ago and I put a Blu-ray disc in and the laptop doesn't even recognise I inserted a disc. It will however still play normal DVDs.

I have also recently upgraded to Windows 10 but this issue could of been happening before then.

I have run a Dell Technical Diagnosis from the site and it tells me this:

TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SU-208CB
Flash ROM Test

TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SU-208CB

TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SU-208CB

TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SU-208CB

 Cannot Run

DVDMINUSRW

Dell PC Diagnostics has encountered an unexpected result. Please close your browser session and attempt to run the diagnostics again. If the issue persists, please contact Dell Technical Support.
I have closed the browser & ran the diagnostics again with the same results.
I have also tried to contact technical support but the phone line is "not open at this time" and I can't chat because it says my product is out of warranty and it wont let me send an email either!

Hi All,

I have a strange problem with USB and Bluetooth in my laptop (Windows 8.1 64 bit). It's been happening for long time but somehow I managed it using restore option to make the drivers work. But I would like to get a permanent solution. Because, the driver gets crashed at any time.

Options I have tried so far,

Bluetooth:

1. Checked my device in PC info, Bluetooth was not listed. Checked Airplane mode in in Network option, there are Bluetooth option is not showing.

2. Downloaded drivers related to Bluetooth from Dell drivers section. But whenever I tried to install it, its failing abruptly.

USB:

1. USB device are not working at all, whether it's Pen driver, keyboard, mouse nothing works.

2. Similar like Bluetooth when I tried to install the USB 2.0 drivers, its failing abruptly.

My Device manager looks like below,

Please help me in resolving this issue.

Battery management Primarily AC Use Question

I have a latitude and set the Battery Management Power Manager to "Primarily AC adapter" since that is the way i plan to use it and don't want the battery getting repeated small charges. The PDF for this says  the battery will not be charged to 100%.  Yet I ran on battery for awhile, down to 90%,then plugged it in and it said Charging and went back to 100%. In the bios, Primarily AC adapter is selected also.

I have worked around this by selecting custom and setting Start at 50% and Stop at 80%. At 92% battery, it says Plugged in, not charging which is what i want.

What am I missing with this mode with the Primarily  AC adapter mode?

thanks

Dell XPS 13 laptop: Plugged in, not charging

Bought a Dell XPS 13 laptop, and after a month it stopped charging.

Tried draining the battery as suggested elsewhere, bought a new Dell adapter to see if that was the problem, both didn't help.

Updating the BIOS doesn't work because I'm now at 0% battery.

Any other suggestions?

Unable to do a factory reset

My aunt has a Inspiron N7110 laptop and recently during the Windows 10 update she had issues and instead of calling me she called a number that popped up on her screen. This company completely wiped her system out. Is there a way to get the factory settings somewhere? The only recovery date showing is the one they created. Also, when they supposedly reloaded Windows 7 they didn't remove what has loaded for Windows 10 so when you start the laptop it asks which system you want to use.  I have it getting access to the internet so that I was able to download the drivers that Dell states should be on her system.

Any suggestions on what else I can do to make sure her system works properly would be helpful.

Thank you.

Laptop shuts down while dell diagnostics

Hi ,

i have a 2 years old Vostro 2520 which has become very slow. It often goes to sleep mode automatically when i connect to the wireless. but this is not my concern.. Actually .. it started giving me trouble a week ago when it would not start and just beep 4 times .. to fix the problem i removed the battery and checked with AC only , this did not work .. then disassemble it and removed all parts and assembled them...this time beep was gone but still it would not let the computer start and gave a very hazy & blurred screen with a very weird noise...i took battery out and strated diagnostic with F12 key, everything was ok as i could see a green tick  EXEPT hard drive(which is at no.3)  and memory(which is at last). i could not get green tick for them and laptop would freeze and screen became blurring & hazy  . . i repeated this several times but everytime but there was no difference, as laptop would before compeleting hard drive and memory test..i gave up on it and put it aside,,but next day when i started it , surpriseingly it launched the window suceessfully and everything was alright...but again after 30 minutes it was back to the same old situation.. after seeing dell logo on startup i could only see the screen which was blurring and making noise continiously...

now when i have strated it, this is working fine (but slow as usual) ...to check what the issue would be i thought to test the system by dell online quick test . it installed the software but SHUTS DOWN before showing reports .. i tried several time but it does the same thing ..

SHUTS DOWN WHILE DELL ONLINE TEST AND FREEZEZ & BLURS WHILE TOOL DIAGNOSTICS..

PLease Help ..

Upgrading an XPS L702X to Windows 10, a report

I have installed Windows 10 and I don't like it. My feedback follows (a section about drivers is further below).

General impressions

With time going by and with the various versions since Windows 95, users have been having less and less freedom when it comes to customizing the system. Windows 10 is no exception to that: "customizing the system" has never felt so much of an oxymoron.

The light gray color of the title bar of windows stays the same whether a window is active or not. And you can't change the color. And this is one thing among a myriad: the small task bar icons (40% smaller, ballpark figure) that can't be made bigger or that will **also** change the size of the text, the white line pictographs, the varying sizes of "live thumbnails" in Alt+Tab, etc. I don't find my way through this system and I just don't get what Microsoft is up to changing everything for the sake of changing: Windows 10 restores the oh-so-logical left-aligned window titles whereas in 8, they claimed centered titles made more sense, Aero came with Vista and saw its last days with 7. The classic window frame is now gone and replaced with a one-pixel wide line surrounded with exterior shadow, like on a web page. Yuck. It's all trivial but it's very telling as to Microsoft' replicating the "we know better" attitude of other consumer companies. I know some will say "does it matter?" but if it were so anecdotal, why was it there in the first place? and isn't it still useful to some? It's like screensavers, you know. Unless we are all to have the same taste and needs, like identical robots.

What I hate the most is the slowness, ie the fact that yesterday, with the same laptop, peripherals and components, it took me 45 seconds to reboot the laptop to the login screen. Now, it takes almost 4 minutes (3:40)! (Yes, it felt so long that I clocked it.) That includes a one minute period during which the screen is just black and nothing happens: no disk drive noise, no activity on the screen, no fan turning faster, nothing. Just nothing.

Everything is slower, even opening the WiFi networks panel is. I feel like I'm back to Vista. I now have 33 seconds to hibernation and 35 for resuming. That's 50% more than with 8.1 when I had even more programs opened.

.NET apps that I've launched (Altaro BackupFS, Countdown timer) feel more sluggish.

It's too phone/tablet oriented; just see the notification center or the settings window. We were used to icons, which helped find one's way quickly, now it's all monochromatic pictographs with greyscale text.

And the fan is constantly turning even when the CPU usage is under 4% (like when writing this post with no other program than Firefox running).

And I'll probably restore the Windows 8.1 system since I took the precaution of saving it using CloneZilla (but I'll probably be nagged by GWX.exe, the Get Windows X executable). To those who are having cold feet trying Windows 10, I've read today that downgrading is allowed by Microsoft but I don't know whether it's handled by a tool of theirs.

The good thing with upgrading was that everything (except Classic Shell, which was removed in the process) was kept as-is whereas after upgrading from 7 to 8.1, I had to reinstall all programs in Program Files. I have not seen any problem in any program except Process Explorer, which had some columns simply vanishing from the set of columns while being reported in the settings as visible. Also, the mousewheel is now working in lists (such as that of the default application per filetype) of system windows and dialogs. No search box paradigm (ie search boxes to filter lists and windows) implemented though.

About drivers

With the exception of the touchpad, the drivers were all the same before and after the upgrade.

The touchpad still can't be disabled :-) even with the latest Synatics driver from August 2015. Pointer inertia has also not returned.

When resuming from hibernation, only the laptop's screen was reactivated: the external monitor hasn't been, which forced me to go to the screen mode (replicate, extend, etc. – of course, much slower too) and switch to replicating the laptop's screen to external monitors before switching back to extend again. Of course, the layout of windows is screwed.

The webcam works, at least in Skype.

On resume from hibernation, the external speakers are **sometimes** (I don't know exactly how often) not reactivated and sound comes from the laptop speakers, which is precisely the problem that the very driver which I installed from Realtek two months ago solved after the upgrade from 7 to 8.1. Worked flawlessly on 7, didn't work at all on 8.1 then started working flawlessly again two months ago with the new driver, then no longer works. Go figure. [UPDATE: when resuming from suspend or hibernation, with a speaker jack plugged in through the process, sound comes from both the laptop speakers AND the external speakers.]

Last Dell machine, for sure. I can't understand the lack of support for such expensive machines. 8.1 was out in October 2013 and there was already no continued support for a laptop I had bought in November 2011. The attitude is unacceptable, all the more when on many systems including the L702X, most current drivers are drivers built for Windows 7 (and timestamped 2006!) and the driver model is said to have not changed in the last 4 iterations of Windows.

Hope this helps someone :-)

Alienware M17x R4

So when windows 10 popped and said it was ready for install I went ahead (it had previously said not ready, so when it said ready i assumed all would be ok -doh!)

upgraded and worked fine for a little while then problems with the display, managed to use the recovery image to get back to as shipped state, upgraded again from essentially clean, system, same issue worked for a while then got display issue, used windows 10 recovery, didn't work, then used windows 10 reset, all that seemed to do was remove useful things like alien respawn.

So tried to go back to factory image (F8 on start up) but this time when i selected factory image reset it couldn't see any disks or images, managed to get them appear by changing disk type in bios, unfortunately after i re-installed windows from CD on reboot it came up with "disk read error - ctrl alt del to restart", removed the hd and put it an external case and using another laptop it found errors on the oS partition which it repaired and I can read all the files when it's in the external case, put it back in the laptop and get the same read error.

Run the diagnostics from F12 and no errors reported, so i'm now stuck, any suggestions or do i need to send the disk/laptop back??

XPS 13 (early 2015) hangs at Dell Logo

Hi everyone,

I am having an issue with my XPS 13.  When I attempt to start the laptop, the dell logo comes up, and then the system just hangs.  There are no beeps or any other error codes.  I tried the suggested Epsa (I believe that's the acronym, the preboot diagnostic mode.  When I do that, it states in the upper right corner "Diagnostic boot started", and still is just hanging.  Tried unplugging  the AC, same issue.  Any Suggestions you might be able to provide would be great!

XPS 15 9350 Touchpad Problem and (possible) resolution

$

My laptop is 18 month old and is left plugged in to the mains for most of the time.

In the past few months, I noticed that the touchpad right and left buttonswere becoming stiff and unresponsive.  I ordered a new touchpad from Dell and installed it yesterday. The problem persisted (£40 down the drain :-(  )

So, I had a closer look.  Whenever the case was loose, the pad worked OK but as I tghtened the screws, ithe stiffness returned.  Looking even closer, it seems that the battery has gone "lumpy" making it fatter than before. As the battery is secured by the same screws that secure the battery, the battery pushes on the touchpad, stopping it working without undue pressure.  I am assuming that the battery, although still holding a charge, has got stressed in some way causing the cells to expand.

I have ordered a new battery to prove my theory so I hope that's not another £70d own the drain!
Anyway, just thought I would share this as it may solve the problems of others and may be usefull for the Dell knowledge base.
