XPS 13 Infinity Max Brightness is Dim in Ubuntu

0
0

Hi,

I've just purchased an XPS 13 (not the developer edition) and installed Ubuntu 15.04 on it. Everything seems to be working fine (sound, wifi, hotkeys etc) except the screen brightness seems low even at the max setting. Colours that should be white (e.g. font in terminal) appear light gray.

These are the brightness values;

cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness

937

cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness

937

cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

937

I've googled around but there doesn't seem to be any other people with this problem, apart from the adaptive brightness complaints (which could be the same problem I am having, although it seems consistently dim rather than changing).

Thanks

Dan

XPS-13 sleeping?

How do you tell when the XPS-13 9343 is sleeping?  With other laptops I've had the power led blinks.  But with this laptop there is no indication that I can find that it's sleeping.  So how do you know when it's sleeping?

Asking about Dell 3442's Intel Smart Response Technology

I am using Dell 3442 with core i3-4005u and Intel Chipset HM86 Express Chipset. As I checked on Intel  website that this chipset is supported with Intel Rapid Storage Technology (which includes Smart Response Technology too) but when I get into BIOS mode there's just AHCI mode for "SATA operation". However, when I press F1 for help, Intel Smart Response Technology (RAID mode) is mentioned in the dialog, is there anything I must setup before switching to RAID mode ? Best thanks!!!

The suport you received is far from what is expected.

Your computer is candidate to upgrade and the Windows 10 is much better than Windows 8.

Please see the instructions below.

Go to Dell site, suppor section and download the most recent drives to your 2330.

It is necessary to update the AMD Radeon drive and the network drive (lan). The new versions  should be dated alter Jul 29th. Do not loose time updating drivers released before this date.

After that, upgrade to Windows 10.

It works. Do not give up.

Do All Inspiron 5558 have Synaptics Touchpad ?

My old Dell Laptop Inspiron N5110 has ALPS touchpad and my experience was so poor that I'll never buy another laptop having ALPS touchpad EVER. Synaptics touchpad seems reasonable at most times. Except touchpad, Dell laptop served me well in past 4 years.

So I'm interested in buying new dell inspiron 5558 (Dell 5000 Series) with i5 (5200u), 1 TB HDD and 8 GB RAM.

I just wanted to make sure that do all Inspiron 5558 laptops have Synaptics touchpads? (precision touchpad or not, it doesn't matter to me much, though it'll be real nice to have.)

I tried searching dell community forums but couldn't find answer to my this question.

Dell Inspiron 5520 - Replaced Hardrive Now What?

0

Hello and thank you in advance for taking the time to read and respond to this post. My hard drive recently failed on my Dell Inspiron 5520 (Windows 7), and I replaced it by scavenging the 80gb hard drive from my old Dell Inspiron E1505. Question is, now what? I have a couple possible options:

1) I have a HP laptop with Windows 7. Can I somehow create a usb drive(or cd) to reinstall windows 7 on my Dell 5520?

2) If not, then can I download the appropriate recovery media from Dell and put it on a Usb? (or CD)

3) If not, then do I need to order the recovery media CD from Dell? Is that my only option?

Thank you for your help with this, very much appreciated!

DELL Inspiron 11 3147 2 in 1 Upgrades

Good day. I wanted to share my experience with the DELL Inspiron 11 3147 2 in 1  with Intel N3540. I purchased from the DELL Outlet. Received in great condition. Slight pry marks where the bottom cover had been removed. I liked the form factor, the convertible feature, the processor choice and suggested battery life.

I have added,

Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB,

Kingston HyperX Impact 1600MHz DDR3L CL9 SODIMM 1.35V Laptop Memory HX316LS9IB/8 GB Black and

Intel 7265NGW Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 802.11ac, Dual Band, 2x2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.0.

The tools needed,

small Phillips head screw driver,

nylon spudger pry bars, to aid in removal of the bottom pane,l to facilitate the removal and installation of the 3 items mentioned.

USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable w/ UASP - SATA to USB 3.0 Converter for SSD/HDD - Hard Drive Adapter Cable

or

2.5" SATA 6gb/sHard drive enclosure with USB cable

Cloning software, (Samsung included both the migration and optimization software). You can download from Samsung website, or transfer from included disc, you will need an external optical drive.

The Samsung software at this point 8/20/2015 may not support Windows 10, which I had updated to. The migration software would not recognize the Samsung SSD as I attempted to clone the SSD. I had called Samsung Customer Service and the other suggestion is that one of the updates from Microsoft or DELL, may hide the USB connection. I used the recovery software to return the Inspiron 11 3147 back to the Windows 8.1 original state, (no updates) and the Samsung software recognized the SSD. I installed the SSD and the system recognized. I am now in the process of updated Windows.

I had installed the memory, 8GB, and the system recognized and acknowledged the 8GB.

I had installed the Wi Fi card and the system recognized and acknowledged the new card. The Intel 7265 is slightly wider than the original DELL 1707, which is a single channel card and it fit with no modification.

There are other brand options for the parts replaced.

The main suggestion is to take your time, the bottom removal is not complicated, the pry bar help in not damaging the case which is plastic. Parts People in Austin, TX have a video on You Tube for removing the back to facilitate the removal and insertion of the HDD/SSD. The battery screws and the HDD screws have to be removed to complete the exchange.

I will update with any new info in regards to the items replaced.

Inspiron 17 7000 series Laptop - keyboard not functioning

when I turned my laptop on, the keyboard wouldn't work. the keys would make clicking sounds but the characters weren't accepted / displayed nor would the cursor move. the touch keyboard works (except now uppercase isn't working, but that's another topic). I have powered down twice, and checked everything related to the keyboard set up, but the status shows its working properly. one thing that puzzles me, is that the status also shows the keyboard is connected to the keyboard port! since this is a laptop, why would it be connected to anything, or say its properly connected? before rebooting the 2nd time, I double checked that the only thing plugged in is the power/battery [another topic for separate posting]. right now I need to get my laptop's keyboard working so I can write a cover letter to a job application. this is a critical issue for me. thanks in advance for anyone's help.

XPS 13 45v AC Adapter - Extremely Hot "brick"

0

Owned the laptop for a few weeks now, pretty happy overall.

Just noticed today that the middle "brick" part of the AC adapter is extremely hot while plugged in and charging the laptop... Is this normal? I'm worried if I were to leave it on a fabric like a couch or bed that it could start a fire as it is very hot to touch.

Thanks to anyone who can provide some insight if they've had this issue...

Dell Desktop mode/Longevity Mode - which one to choose

0

Hi,

I have a inspiron 7537 with win8.1.
I use my laptop on ac power whenever it's possible, i.e., I take out the laptop from desk drawer; plugin to the ac power adapter and turn on the laptop. At the end of the day, I shut it down and unplug the adapter, put it back in drawer.

I live in Bangalore, India. In my locality power cuts happens, sometime for 5~15 minutes in a day, sometime no power cut at all.

So, as per the usage, which mode of dell power options should I use? Desktop mode or Longevity mode?

I got kind of confused after checking the description for dell power mode options. They are confusing, like desktop mode description says Battery will only charge between 50 and 100%. What does it mean? Will it not charge if battery is 49%? If battery is 99%, will it charge to 100% everytime?

I want to extend the battery lifespan. For that I know frequent charging will reduce the lifespan of the battery. So, It will be great if Battery will not be charged within 60-100%.

For example, battery is 100%. Power cut. Battery drains to 80%. Power comes back. Now the laptop will use power from the adapter and the battery will not be charged.

Dell must include this feature/abilty to its age old "QuickSet" application.

Any suggestion?
