Vostro 1700, fan stop working

I've noticed the fan stopped working on my Vostro 1700.  I've taken it apart and the heatsink and fan look brand new, no dust at all.  I went to the Dell web page and downloaded the upgraded bios A07.  When it rebooted the fan came on and worked through the rebooting and then stopped again.  Is this still a bios problem?

Hi,

After a recent Windows update I took a look at the device manager in Windows and it is showing an unknown device.

As it is unknown, Windows cannot tell me what it is. What is the best way  to identify the unknown device?

I can't get my DisplayPort to work. Dell Latitude E6520. The monitor is a Samsung  U28E590D. The Docking station is a A00 revision. I updated my BIOS from A08 to A19 to try to get it to work. Graphics driver says it is up to date. Using a DP cable to a DP input on the monitor, but no signal is there. Tried two new cables.

I posted here but my message wasn't approved: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/mobile-devices/f/4586/t/19580384

How to Toggle disable/enable Keyboard and touchpad

Hi,

I like to do maths exercises from online portal; so i keep my exercise book on the palmrest of my laptop and practise. But it presses keys and touchpad clicks. I use a external mouse to scroll the web page.

So I need a small utility which will allow me to disable/enable the built-in keyboard and touchpad only, with a mouse click.

Is there anything that can suffice my need?

I'm using dell inspiron 7537 with win8.1.

Dell e7440 allow USB wake up support issue

Hi,

I've enabled "Allow wake on USB Support" in BIOS->Power Management and after this I got 2 issues:

Laptop goes to sleep after 2 minutes(instead of 30 minutes that is set up in Power Options)
and second issue: Skype if offline after computer waked up(it works properly if "Allow wake on USB Support" is disabled.

Issue with Skype is not critical but fact that laptop goes to sleep every 2 minutes is annoying.

Is there a way to fix this?

Please delete.

Replacement Inspiron, Rubbish Screen and other problems

I purchased a new Inspiron laptop in March 2015 (it had a very good screen) and had a lot of problems with the laptop itself, it was eventually replaced. The screen on the replacement laptop is absolute rubbish, it is very washed-out/faded with text hard to read as it is blurry and looks slightly broken up giving me very sore eyes. When I was talking to customer support they said it was an upgraded model laptop and it would have a very good screen. I have to look directly at the screen at no angle to be able to see anything or it just looks like it blacks out. Watching any movies it has a very dark picture and if I increase the brightness it just looks more washed-out and any text in other programs is hard to read so I have to turn the brightness down to an acceptable level. The Start screen and Desktop have a darkish tinge to them as well. I have had several Dell systems over the years and all have been good but this is nothing like those. I have tried all the text and screen adjustments to no avail. My wife has got an el cheapo laptop we bought off ebay about 3 years ago and its screen is a lot better. I have already had other problems with it, and it is only a day old. When I updated the Dell Backup and Recovery program using it's own updater I got the message "Failed to patch file: C:\Program Files(x86) \Dell Backup and Recovery\Components\Shell\SQLite.Interop.dll" so I went to the Dell website and downloaded another one and it seems to be going well for now. I also tried to download the "Netflix" app from the Microsoft store but got an "Error code: 0X80070057" although this same app installed on the original laptop fine first go. I now have two laptops here and I prefer the original laptop because the screen is a lot easier on the eyes. I just need "ALL" of the Original software that Dell had installed when it was new, as over time I have sorted most of the problems out (the techs have reinstalled windows 3-4 times and all the original software has been wiped). I have rung the Dell technical department and they say you can swap the screens over. So where do I go from here? I just want a laptop that works!

Kind regards

Inspiron screws unscrew themselves and cause malfunction?

Hi, today I found a tiny screw on my bed after placing my laptop down. When I went to the internet to comment on the absurdity of a screw falling out of my one-year-old Inspiron 17-5748 laptop, I discovered that I could not - any key that I hit did something other than its intended purpose of typing a letter (for example, I opened the 'inspect element' portion of Firefox through hitting buttons - I was kind of freaking out over my keyboard ceasing to function for no apparent reason, so I can't tell you which keys did what)

I flipped my laptop to look for the screw's home, since that was the only thing I could think of trying before restarting, and discovered that the two screw holes by the hinge of the laptop were just empty. I stuck the found screw in one of the holes - nothing fancy, even, I don't keep a tiny screwdriver by my bed - and, presto, the keyboard began operating normally. I've now screwed it all the way in, and tightened the left away-from-hinge screw because it was coming loose, but this doesn't help me replace the missing screw.

Is there a way to replace my missing screw and/or make sure that the rest of 'em don't go missing?

I've got a touch-screen, so I can probably operate in the future if this problem pops up again, but I have no clue what other vital functions could be disrupted by the case inexplicably loosening. This feels like a manufacturing error, but the thing did it three months after my warranty expired (of course). Anyone else experienced this? Might want to check the bottom of your laptop...

Inspiron 3543 USB 2 USB (2.0/3.0) ports not working

Hello everybody

I just purchased a Inspiron 3543 (Intel Core i3 5005U) for my daughter. The laptop is 4 weeks old. The laptop came with Ubuntu. I had a licence for Windows ,7 so I installed a Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Everything worked fine for two weeks. Then my daughter plugged in the USB port, her phone (Samsung S3 Neo) and there popped up a message. She told me after few days so I don't know exactly what the message was but was something about overusing the capacity of ports and Windows will disable but it can be reset/renabled later. She plugged out the cable then plugged in again. The phone was still charging but the phone was not recognized by the operating system. Then the two USB ports on the left side of laptop completely stopped working.

It didn't appear in Device manager with exclamation mark. It appeared as installed and OK.

One USB port (2.0) which is on the other side of laptop works fine.

I tried enabling/disabling ports in BIOS to no avail. I uninstalled all USB devices and and reboot and Windows installed them back and everything seems OK in Device Manager.  I ran Dell  Diagnostics and everything was ok. But the two USB ports still didn't work.

Then I upgraded to Win 10 on 30 july and the problem persisted. Yesterday I did a clean install of Windows 10 hoping this will solve the problem but the USB ports from left side are still not working. However the USB port in the right side of laptop (where is just one port) works fine. Only the ports in the left side of laptop (where are 2 ports USB 3.0/USB 2.0) are not working. There is not even a message when I plugged in something in one of those two ports. It's like they don't exist.

Can someone please  help me with an advice?

Thank you very much for your time.

Cheers,

Sebastian

Asking for advice in upgrading Dell Studio 1557's RAM

Hi. My laptop supports a maximum of 8 GB RAM. It has already 2 x 2Gb DDR3 Samsung installed in it. From what I gathered by searching the net, I've found that 1557 has 4 places to install RAM in it and 2 of those are already filled.

Here is my goal:
Upgrading RAM to 6 or 8 GBs

Here is the problem:
- Studio 1557 has heating issues. The area around touch pad quickly becomes hot under moderate load. Also corei7- 720QM (which was one of the first i7s for laptops) becomes hot often.
- Worse than that, my graphic chipset burned about 4 months ago along with fan (I don't know which one caused the other). I had them replaced.
- So my 5 years old laptop has become quite unreliable (or has not?)

Here is my options:
1- Snapping in just 1 x 2 GB (so 1 slot would be empty).
2- Installing 2 x 2GB so I would have 4 x 2GB (all slots filled).
3- Staying out of this ill-fated mission since the machine is hot,old and unreliable.

What is the optimum course of action? What happens for Dual-Channel feature in cases 1 and 2? Does filling all slots cause too much stress for mother board?
I personally think this machine is going to work for me at least 3 years more so I like to add 2 x 2G GB (option 2).

Dell Backup and Recovery and Windows 10

Since my XPS 13 upgraded to Windows 10, every time I turn it on, up pops B&R to tell me that I've upgraded to Win10 and to tell me to upgrade to their paid-for edition if I didn't want to only be able to restore to Win8.1.

I'm really not interested, but I can't find any way to stop this annoying advert from popping! Can any one suggest a solution, please?

Dell XPS L702X 3D - Reinstalling everything from new due to formatted HDD's.

$

First off, sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section, it's my first post [:)]

I have a Dell XPS L702X 3D. Recently, due to an error with Windows 10, I have to had to format both HDD's and reinstall Windows 10 as new. I do not have a factory image nor backup. As a result, I have lost all software that was preinstalled on the laptop when it came to me. If you can, could you please inform me as to what software I should install, what drivers to install, and how to configure anything I install so that my laptop is returned to factory condition (besides the preinstalled Windows 7 of course [:)]). I do have the Drivers and Utilities disc that came with the laptop so all I need to know in that regards is what to install (and again, how to configure them correctly). I realise this is quite a tall order, but if any information can be presented as clear as possible that'd be amazingly helpful. Hopefully, I will return to a useable laptop that I can trust not to break on me again. Cheers in advance!

If you need to know anymore details about the laptop, please just ask and I'll do my best to provide.
