I just took my new laptop out of the box today and when I went to shut it down it only goes into hibernation rather than completely shutting off. Is that okay or am I doing something wrong?

Hi, I tried to use the command prompt under system recovery options to restore my default factory setting. My laptop is Dell Inspiron N4050. I already updated my OS but I want to return it to default. I typed in chkdsk c:/r under command prompt. The process continues but in the end, I got this error which is "Failed to transfer logged message to the event log with status 50." Please help. Thanks

one of the most ridiculous rule Dell ever implemented on their website is..

when a potential customizing a laptop on Dell website, he better not select a 32bit OS with more than 4GB ram. Dell will play big brother and put stop to this nonsense of equipping your laptop with more memory just so the thinking is when he decides to go 64bit, he doesnt have to worry about being low on RAM. but no. Dell will flatly refused to sell you a machine more ram than you need! no sir. if you select Windows with 64bit and then choose more than 4GB ram, the Dell site will completely refuse to process your order!!! And even when we ARE AWARE 32bit systems will not process/utilize rams over 4GB and yet the Dell reps can keep patrionize a customer who knows that fact by repeating 32bit system and more ram do not go hand in hand. how pathetic is that? to make matters worse, the dell reps cant do anything about it! the system will not allow them to overwrite even if it means making an extra sale with more memory just because Dell believes you do not need more RAM based on your Operating system selection. Come on, Dell. what happen to giving what customers want? if we want more ram, regardless of whether 32bit or 64bit, just sell us more ram! no wonder Dell's bottom line isnt what used to be. its not like theres even a shortage of ram in the world! you guys have to change that stupid rule before it turns me and other customers off and buy elsewhere! Sigh.

I recently bought this laptop, installed drivers, no problem till then, but now it shuts down whenever I try to play a game. Especially on steam. I verified the temperature it stays at 55 degres, max at 58-60. Never goes up. I tried to see whether or not, it is a driver problem so I reinstalled all, but the problem still persists. Can anyone help me?

xps 14z

Been reading that many people have had problems with Wi-Fi speeds with their xps 14z.  I am having the same problem.  I have tried all of the recommended solutions to no avail.  Is it possible that the network card is simply bad?  I've been disappointed with speeds since the beginning (purchased this just over a year ago) but did not realize just how bad it was until we recently tested speeds of other computers in the office.  Everyone else is hitting download speeds of 14+Mbps.  I'm sitting at under 4.

My power settings are at the max performance for the network card.  I have downloaded and installed the latest driver from Intel.

In addition to the Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6230 there is also a Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter.  I have the latest driver for that too.

But what I find really odd is that in the advanced settings for the Advanced-N 6230, under properties the wireless mode does not have an option for 802.11 n.  It only has a, b and g. However properties does include 802.11n Mode which you can enable or disable.  When I disabled the 802.11n Mode my speeds bump up to just over 6 Mbps.  Go figure.  Something is not right about that.

I don't know what to do.

For my birthday I got a Dell Inspiron 3520. I asked my uncle if he can install better ram. He did and I was able to play my games on steam for a short time in great quality until my laptop ran into a problem. It had to do something with memory management. Then my laptop starting taking alot of time to start a program and sometimes not even open it. When plays games I  only have the option to to use 1GB of ram instead of the 8GB installed through the keyboard. I don't know what to pc is taking longer shutdown and load programs as well having random error restarting the laptop. Please help!

When I turn the laptop on it gets to the Dell logo screen then screen goes black with  a cursor in top left corner but then it restarts again.

Regardless if the F2 or F12 keys are selected or not, the systems restarts again. This cycle continues indefinately until I turn it off.

I have replaced the memory stick (brand new), the hard drive (brand new), the motherboard (used from ebay), and the processor (used from ebay) and still the same thing. I have tried it without the cd drive installed and same thing. I have tried it without the battery installed but with the power supply and same thing. I have tried turning it on with the windows disk in the cd rom drive and same thing. I am very fustrated to say the least. ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks.

How to change click sounds on touchpad buttons

I have a new Inspiron laptop with Windows 8.  The left button on the touchpad makes a very loud clicking sound when you use that button.  The right button does not.  This loud click makes it impossible to use in a meeting as it is very distracting to everyone.  How can I modify - or silence - the clicking sound on the touchpad buttons?

Thanks!

Solution for AC Adapter not recognised problem, and loose power plug

I have several XPS m1530s and several Dell PSUs. Two recent additions to the stable reported the famous "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined".

I found the reports of BIOS updates, broken data wire, failed DS2501 1-wire PROM, broken power socket, etc.

I decided to investigate one unit. I stripped it down and removed the I/O PCB that the power socket is mounted on. I then inspected the data circuit and tested it for continuity.

There is a test point (TP) on the underside of the PCB just after a via (through-hole) from the upper side. I tested between the TP and the data pin of the socket without finding a signal. I assumed the issue was a solder dry-joint so I flowed new flux and solder top and bottom of the PCB for the data pin. That failed to fix the problem.

I found the signal on the edge-connector from the TP, and by carefully scraping away lacquer was able to test from the underside of the via to the TP. There was no signal between TP and the centre pin of the socket, nor from the underside of the via. At this point I suspected the via was faulty.

I then scraped the lacquer away from the top side of the via and found the signal from the TP there too, so the via is good.

There was no signal between the top side of the via and the data pin of the socket - a distance of about 10mm. I carefully scraped more lacquer away close to the data pin but just before the screen printing. The signal reached there too, but did not get from there to the data pin - a distance of 2mm.

I then carefully scraped more lacquer away on the final 2mm of the trace connecting to the pin. I thought I'd find a break and have to solder across it.

In the event the simple act of firmly scraping (with a 2mm jewellers flat-bladed screwdriver) fixed it. I tested again after scraping and the signal was working.

Inspecting the socket closely when the plug is inserted and removed I noticed there is a distinct physical flex of the socket against the board, and the data pin definitely stressed the via it is inserted through.

It seems that flexing is enough to make an invisible break (even the microscope couldn't see the break) but physical pressure can fix it in some circumstances.

I hooked up the LCD to the LVDS and the power switch/indicator PCB to the motherboard and applied power. The system started without the warning. I tried all the PSUs that it had previously been reporting as 'bad' and none of them cause the error report any more.

I shall make sure of the repair by soldering a flexible wire directly from the data pin of the power socket to the top side of the via to prevent a recurrence. I shall be working on the other 'faulty' m1530 tomorrow and hopefully find a similar solution.

I thought others might find this information useful since it is another possible solution if the PSU itself is known good.

P.S. I also found a solution to the loose power plug issue. The power socket has 4 flat sprung-metal lugs around the centre pin which protrude away from the centre pin and press against the internal surface of the power plug to hold it firm.

There are 4 very small slots in the centre pin plastic where those lugs expand to. By carefully applying pressure with the 2mm jewellers flat-bladed screwdriver to the ends of the lugs in those slots I was able to force the lugs to move backwards slightly and make the lugs protrude slightly more. That was enough to hold the barrel of the power plug firmly again.

7 beep sound

Hi.

my laptop started facing the same 7beep sound today.  its INPIRON 5520...

I tried to reboot it many times, but faced the same issue..

called the customer care,, they tried too,but failed.

ultimately told that processor has to b replaced...

but what I  think   its not a processor issue...

as read earlier in many cases processor was replaced, even then the issue  didnt get resolved.

so why the dell technician ask us to replace the processor..

these  dell technician are good for nothing...

my  laptop started  just now,,,

I  was tring to reboot it agn  and agn by switching it on along with pressing few keys..

this  time I  had rebooted and  presses  window key and alt key  many times..

ans it  started..!! i dunno if  it helped or something else..

the problem  is that  why dell laptops  face this issue...

yes  I  also  work  on my  bed,, if this  is  the  main  reason, then what  can we do..!!!!

its very  natural that we will work on our bed... so  why dont dell do  something,, that  working on bed does nt become a  problem  on laptop..

what I feel, all laptops shld  come with an attached background, (an extra back layer, wich allows proper ventillation and cooling and also  does not allow  dust from inside to go inside the laptop) ..

and one more thing,, I  have really started hating dell like anything...

my laptop  has  the touchpad issue  right  from beggining..

and  recently  the a dell technician told me the hard drive has gone bad,It  can crash anytime

and today   this  laptop got the 7 beep sound..

I will never buy a dell anymore and recommend  no one.

within  an year,it  has   got so  many  issue.... and its customer service  even suck,,

can anyone give  me  an address where  I  can write to michael  dell directly, and let him  know what kinda  laptop dell is making nowadays...!!

and i want to know few things....

should we work  on the laptop with charger  connected??

can we use  the laptop with  it base little   tilted (for   proper  ventillation and avod dust)  or its advicable to use it by keeping flat on the surface?

Good night 4 all!

Well, I already followed several tutorials on the internet but Im still getting this error message and Im not able to run IRST.

Someone have any idea of how do I've to proceed?

I'm not a dumb ass lol But I already did this (I think its correct but Still dont work :()

- Start the system, changed in BIOS do ATA

- On the screen "install now", I do SHIFT + F10 and run prompt to diskpart, select disk, clean commands, override commands, etc... (lazy to discribe all of them lol )

- restart the system, change in BIOS again to IRST, load sata drivers, install the system, all ok.

My system is up but is lower than b4 :( And when I try to install the IRST utility to make my system faster with SSD cache, I got that error message :(

Thx

Service Manual For 14Z 5423

$

Hi,

I am attempting to upgrade my wireless card on my Dell 14Z 5423 to a newer Intel card that supports 5Ghz networks, however upon searching for a service manual for this laptop I cannot seem to locate one.

The only manual I can find are for older versions of the 14Z and not the 5423 model I own, is one available and if so where can I find it?

I obviously don't want to attempt disassembling this laptop without any proper instructions as I don't wish to break anything.

Thanks,

Declan

internet dropping out with vostro 2520

I have just recently received a vostro 2520 Laptop and have had continual drop out issues with wireless connection. The laptop has a Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) card installed.

Interesting point is I also have a Dell mini Inspiron notebook (not sure of wifi card) and whichever place I am in the house I always have full service and indicator showing close to full bars with no intermitting connection.

Has any one else experienced same issues?

Thanks
