Dell Studio 1749 : Question about RAM add

Hello,

I have a Dell Studio 1749 Intel i5, 4GB RAM (2x2) and hard drive ssd Samsung evo 840 256 gb. I run Windows 7 Premium 64.

I'm a musician and use Ableton Live recording software as well as many  VST sound files.

I wonder if adding RAM (I thought a bar of 8gb) could help my CPU and improve the speed of certain tasks especially when I manipulate Ableton and many tracks of music.

If someone could tell me what it would be great.

thank you,

Mathias.

Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop Will Not Turn On

$

Before I start, I want to let you know that I am not new to laptops and repairs. I have fixed all kids of things with laptops before. Just so long as I know Where To Look.

Issue: My laptop will turn on "Sometimes" It will go several days sometimes weeks before I can get it to turn on. Sometimes it works fine for a few days. Then its doing it again.

Parts Replaced: DC Daughter board, Power Switch, power supply, battery.

I took my multi-meter and checked for power between the daughter board and motherboard. I get power.
I then checked for power from the battery to the motherboard. I get power.

I have even read about a fuse. But have not located this. But generally, if a fuse is blown, it won't work randomly. Blown is blown.

This is a random issue. I have read all the posts I could find. Most of the time people continue having this issue. There just has to be a fix for this short of replacing the motherboard. Also, if a refurbished motherboard corrects the problem, then what was it that was repaired to make it work again. If a new motherboard is the fix, then will I start having this issue again after a year or so? Back to square one again?

Dell, Do you or do you not know what is wrong. Please do not give me a standard cookie cutter answer. I need a real answer from someone that knows exactly what is wrong.

Hibernation and sleep modes affecting laptop

Does prolonged use of hibernation and sleep affect the battery or system?

I've Dell vostro 2520.

I usually hibernate it for four to five times for every 12 hours and put it to sleep mode nearly for the same time for short durations. I've been noticing certain changes in the computer's performance after nearly five months of using it in the above mentioned way. Sometimes the computer goes to log off mode after three to four hibernations at a stretch and it doesn't hibernate further unless it is switched off. Many a times after resuming from sleep there's a change in the appearance of the start button. It appears kind of encircled by a ting of some colour. Sometimes after repeated hibernation the modem shows 'No Device' and functions only after restart. The battery also shows some strange variations like from 76% of charge is drops to 10% and while it was on 76 mark it led was red. It's a new battery and the old one too showed similar performance at the end of its tenure.

Thank you for replying

Dell Inspiron 15z Win 8.1 USB ports not functional

$

This is something I've never encountered before, so I thought I'd check in here to see if anyone knows what to do.

A couple of days ago, all the USB ports on the laptop stopped working. It didn't matter what was plugged in to them, they weren't getting any power. I've taken the following steps:

-  Checked Device Manager - Windows says the drivers are fine, and the ports are getting power, but, even after a re-install of the USB drivers, no activity on the ports

-  Checked the event log - No errors in System related to USB

-  Checked BIOS settings to see if anything USB-related was misconfigured - everything checked out

-  Run system diagnostics from within the OS - The ports come up as ok and getting power

-  Changed Power settings to prevent USB ports from being put to sleep - No luck

-  Run Dell diagnostics at bootup - The USB ports tests come back OK

-  Did a restore to a restore point before everything went wrong - No luck; the ports still don't function

-  Did a factory reset - No luck; the ports still don't work

What's odd is that, at reboot, a plugged in USB drive will turn on. Just for fun, I installed a Linux Live distro on my USB drive, and it boots up fine, so something in the OS is shutting off the USB ports.

I'm out of ideas. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks!

-Doug

Problems in boot or display

Hello,

I am a owner of cell inspiron N5110,early 2011 laptop. I had a battery which ran out of life and was using it on the ac adapter. Now the laptop has a black screen whenever it is switched on. The adapter is working fine as I have tried it on other Dell laptops. I have tried switching on the laptop by removing the battery as well as changing the power source, having no change. I tried to tackle the static problem I found on other discussions in the forum by removing the battery and the adapter and holding the start button for 10-20 seconds. When the start button is pressed the computer has three hardware buttons which light up and then go out on their own. I had a defective CMOS battery which beeped 5 times in a triplet on every boot, this has been missing as well as there is no evidence pointing to windows start up such as windows start up sounds or anything, suggesting it is not a screen issue. I had the same issue a day back but the laptop eventually recovered on its own without a big time gap. What seems to be the problem?

Thank you

Dell Inspiron 5720 will not POST/Blank screen

$

I have a Dell Inspiron 5720 that will not POST, there is no display, doesn't appear to even light the lamp for the display.

When the power button is pressed, the three buttons in the right above the numberpad light, 1 2 3 2 1 then all three light up and go dim.

The power button stays lit, as well as the power light, however there is no display.

The CPU fan does not come on at any time

-Removed battery and power supply, held power button 30+ seconds, did not resolve issue

-Removed battery, attempted to power on with just AC adapter, did not solve issue

-Pulled RAM and received two beeps

-Pulled RAM and HDD, only the two beeps

I have been researching this issue and it all seems to come back to the motherboard, can anyone confirm? The owner is will to pay for the repair, if the repair has a warranty for the part/labor.

Thank you,

Chad

Studio 1749 issues

Having several different issues with my Studio 1749.  I'll explain separately incase they are not related.

1.  First off battery life is almost depleted.  Been getting a replace the battery message for about a month.  Don't want to replace battery if the computer is on its last leg.

2.  Recently the screen started blinking while in use.  Sometimes mimimal and some times a lot.

3.  On startup both my screen  and keyboard blinks(a lot).  Take longer to boot up and eventually goes into issue #2 mode.

4.  With #2 above after a hour and a half or more the computer just powers off without any warning.  No warning just shuts down.

Connecting Inspiron 7720 laptop to two 1440p monitors

Greetings,

I have a Dell 7720 (inspiron 17R SE) laptop and I have it currently working with a u2715h Dell monitor in 1440p resolution via HDMI (even though I read in many places that such a setup with HDMI can only do 1080p!). Anyway, I'd like to know what's the best way to connect my laptop to two u2715h monitors in extended mode in 1440p (if that's possible). I'm fine with not using the laptop screen. The graphics card I have is GT650m, it has an hdmi and a vga output..

Dell inspirion 15r 5521 - checking media (failed)

$

Two days ago I updated my gpu driver (AMD Radeon hd 8730m) and just like always it told me I need to restart my laptop in order to finish the process. I pressed ok and when the laptop started turning itself on, it froze on the dell logo. After a few minutes I manually turned my laptop off and turned it back on. This time it showed me the dell logo and then I said "checking media" on the top left corner, immediately followed by (failed). Then it said "checking media" under it and after two to three seconds it said "press any key to restart your computer". So I did and it just kept on looping from the dell screen to it saying "checking media (failed)" and again telling me to press any button to restart my computer. I don't have any clue why this is happening to me this time. I did everything just like I always do when I update my gpu driver but this time it just didn't work.

Bluetooth issues with Inspiron 13 7000

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 running Windows 8.1, along with a Dell Wireless Travel Mouse (WM524).

Using the mouse for the first time, it paired and connected with no problem. Ever since, when the laptop is booted the mouse just shows up paired and never connects. The only option is to remove the device (mouse). When that's done, the laptop finds it instantly, then pairs and connects with no issue. This is a really annoying problem, as I use the travel mouse often. I can't stand the mouse pads built into laptops.

Another minor issue is that True Color in the systray constantly turns itself off. I have the battery saving option unchecked, so that's not causing it.

Any help with these two problems would be much appreciated!

Dell Inspiron M5010 disappointed customer

Hi all!

As an owner of a Dell Inpiron M5010 I went through the 7 beeps issue like many of us before. I have been reading many threads and temporary solutionabout this very common manufacturing problem of the motherboard, probably caused on the poor heating system.

First time it happened 2 years after I bought this laptop, fortunately I had the warranity and could be fix for free. Now I'm having the same problem again just one year later without warranity. I'm not looking for temporary solution here for example wrapping in a blanket or any other magic like this because that's insane, it can not be a proper solution.

I'm just trying to ask myself or anyone else how can the dell let it happen? A kinda popular brand like this is/was selling such a poor quality product. And dell just seems ignore the problem. It's crazy and shame for the company and I'm sure a lot of costumer who basicly were satisfied with their working laptop before their computer died, now are being really disappointed and dell is loosing many costumers.

For the dell staff please do not come up with remove the battery blablabla, you know, I know and everybody knows who is having the same issue that doesn't solve the problem. As it is a very common reason of the dead motherboard you had better confess your manufacturing fault in this and at least replace it for a proper one, instead of trying to use some Jedi mind trick.

As a really disappointed customer I just want to notice you I'm not going to pay a single penny to fix it. If you are able to replace the broken parts for free, then I see there is a helpful staff behind the dell. On the other hand I don't mind to buy a new laptop, but sure it will never be a dell again.

Thank you,

Viet

XPS 15 regularly crashes during sleep

Hello, i have recently bought a xps 15 2 months ago. It has been working fine, but after maybe a month after the purchase, I have experienced crashes whenever the laptop is put in sleep mode. There seems to be no pattern to it, but I have noticed that if it is in sleep mode for more like 3 - 5 hours, it has a greater tendency to crash. There is really no way of telling when and under what situation it will crash under.

The error message that i get is: (Please visit the site to view this file)

My XPS model:

Sorry I couldn't put the error message in a jpeg, something went wrong when i did print screen.
