Touchpad malfunction when choosing files to view or open: Scroll bar scrolls down really fast when I tap on bar.

I have a Del Latitude E6430 laptop with Windows 7 Pro. Lately, when I open a window to view or choose files on my computer or from a flash drive, the scroll bar malfunctions.  If I tap more than once below the movable bar to scroll, it sometimes scrolls down really fast to the bottom.  While this is happening, if I click on the lower scroll area before the bar gets to the bottom, the bar will stop scrolling.  This happens only with more than one click to move down. For instance, If I tap once under the scroll bar, it goes down one move; if I tap twice, even if I do it slowly, it sometimes scrolls down really fast.

I think this happens when I have been working on the computer for a while, but I am not sure.  It doesn't happen when I am scrolling down a web page.  I have done the Windows detection for driver updates and they are up-to-date.

The computer is not under warranty anymore. This is maddening!


Alienware 13'' stuck on first boot

So I just purchased an Alienware laptop and on my first boot after entering the Microsoft account and it starts "Installing my apps" it just stays there. I'm not sure if it's just too slow or it's stuck, not very reassuring being my first boot up after purchase. Any suggestions or should I just change it for another one?

Throttling CPU Dell Inspiron 7548

My Dell Inspiron 7000 series has been automatically changing the max CPU usage to 5% in the Power Options settings. Does anyone know why it is automatically changing this without my knowledge? Could it be a third party program manipulating the settings?

How can I access the MEBx BIOS settings on a Dell Latitude E5440 laptop?

Hello,

I can't seem to be able to configure MEBx (Intel AMT / vPro) on my E5440 no matter what I do. I know that a configuration menu is supposed to pop up when I press Ctrl-P at boot time, but that only triggers a suggestion to press F12 at the upper-right corner of the screen. Pressing F12 does present me with the option to enter BIOS setup, however the only options related to MEBx are "enable MEBx hotkey" in the POST section (which is on), and some other setting about allowing hotkeys generally, which is also on. And yet I can't seem to be able to configure MEBx at all.

Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

Can I not put windows 7 on my 2015 XPS?

Hi there, I recently bought an xps 13 9343 2015 edition. I swapped the toshiba default ssd with one of the samsung sm951 m.2 ahci drives. Thanks to the BIOS updates, windows 8.1 works on it but I can get Windows 7 to install on it.

When I boot from usb (legacy BIOS with secure boot OFF) it brings up windows 7 install but when it lists the partitions, I'm not allowed to install on the primary. I click show details and it says it can't install because it's of the GPT partition style.

Can someone help me understand what this means and let me know if it's possible or not to put Win 7 on these drives? I would truly love to run Win 7 but I'm stumped. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Problem with Screen Brightness on Inspiron 15 (3542, Early 2014)

Hi Community!

I've been having a problem with my screen brightness. The problem is I can't change the screen brightness through the function keys, neither by the setup on the power options menu. I've tried changing my plans for power saving but that doesn't work. Also all the other funtion keys work properly (volume, search). In addition I haven't activated my windows 8.1 in a while. If you can help me out with this I'd be very thankful.

E7450 freezing

I have an E7450 used for engineering application software. I am experiencing the laptop freezing up  multiple times during the day. The only resolution is to force shutdown. I don't get any black screen, just whatever application that was in use is frozen, as well as the whole computer.

Any resolution to this?

Dell 3551 Linux Trackpad issues

I just got a new Dell 3551 Laptop with Ubuntu and it simply has the worst trackpad I have ever encountered.  It is erratic and the mouse pointer jumps around, when the trackpad is pressed the pointer often resets to the bottom left of the screen.  It is infuriating and makes an otherwise perfectly good laptop almost unusable.  

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Hi,

I'm using a Dell Power Companion 12000 mAh with an older laptop. It is the perfect size mobile battery.

It powers on correctly, but the Power companion does not identify the laptop and turns off the power in 30 seconds. Is there some way to keep the power on?

Inspiron 17 - very slow, HD hovers 95% of the time

I have an Inspiron 17, purchased about February 2014, so like 18 months old.

It is extremely slow - starting up, logging in, starting Windows...you name it. Starting Chrome can take a minute.

I start Task Manager to see what's up, and it says the HDD is at 95%+ for the first 10-15 minutes of use - or after logging in. The thing is, the total numbers don't add up to much - sometimes less than 1MB/s, in 0.1 MB/s increments. Dropbox seems to be a culprit, as does Microsoft Search Indexer.

I've:

- Run several anti-malware programs

- Scanned for viruses

- Run the Iolo system checkup that Dell offers

- Run the Dell System Detect diagnostics

- Ran CrystalDiskMark (a HDD benchmarking app)

- Disabled anything I don't need running on startup

Still slow as a dog.

I was hoping I could compare notes with others who have similar setups, to try and see whether it's just a slow computer or there's something wrong with this one.

It's under warranty, so I'd like to get it resolved.

Total Specs:

Win 8.1, i5-4200U @ 1.6Ghz, 8G mem, 500G HDD, 40% full

I have a new (3 months) Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series 2-in-1 laptop and as much as I like it I have had some issue or other with it every month since I received it. Last month I had problems booting up after a hang up in start up. Contacted Dell support and we got things worked out or so I thought, but it happened again today. Only this time the power light is on, the cap lock will turn on and I can see my mouse cursor, but the screen is black and I can not power it down or anything.  I really like this computer, but honestly I am getting very frustrated with the issues I have had with it.

Has anyone else had this issue or any suggestions on fixing this issue?

Missing Drivers

Help pls!

I bought Inspiron 13 7000 Series 2-in-1 (7348) with a package of Windows 8.1.  However, I dowgraded the OS to Windows 7 Pro due to system requirement. After completely installing the windows 7 Pro, I noticed that there are four drivers missing in my device manager. I've tried checking with the Dell download center, but to no avail. These are the drivers that need to be installed:

  1. PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  2. PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
  3. SM Bus Controller
  4. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

Appreciate your help in finding these drivers.  Thanks.

Dell 13Z Power Button Issues / Mystery ???

My Dell 13z has a problem starting back up from sleep or full shutdown. Most times when power button is pressed, it lights up along with the power led and 3 lights in top right corner sequence and that's it. NO HDD Light and No screen. If I press the button again it will turn everything off. This takes 10 or so times to get the laptop to turn on correctly and full function.

It seems like I have to push the power button a certain way to get HDD and Screen to power up. ??

I pulled power button assembly out to check and there is only 1 button in there. Could this be defective in some way?

I've started having this problem over the past few days, I'm always moving my laptop around my house, carrying it from one place to another, but very recently (It seems random) moving it in a certain way or placing it in a certain way causes it to instantly crash and turn off, sometimes automatically restarting, sometimes not. I haven't worked out exactly what position causes this, but my guess is it may be something physically wrong within the casing. It has happened when carrying the laptop underarm, when placing it upside down on a bed to avoid the fan getting choked for air, or placing it sideways against the wall next to my bed. (Due to a lack of money my laptop's become my alarm clock, and leaving it this way is the best way to keep the speakers exposed.)

The last two aren't exactly standard ways of treating a laptop, but I've never actually had any problems from doing this until now. The laptop's taken a bit of abuse over the past few years, but this is the first time it's shown anything like this.


M17x R3 broken headphone jack repair advice

Hello.

I have an Alienware M17x-R3 with extended warranty (Accidental Damage Covered)  which expires in Jan 2016.

Recently this laptop fell and two headphones were plugged in it. This caused the headphone jacks to bend from inside. Now the headphone jacks have stopped working!

I got the broken headphone pin removed from the jack. But still my laptop thinks that a headphone is plugged in. It bypasses the speaker to give the audio output to the headphones, which are not present.

So I am currently stuck in a situation with no audio.

I contacted Dell Technical Support in my country (INDIA). First I was told that this would not be covered under warranty and i would have to pay for the parts as this is wear and tear. I tried explaining to them that as this was an accident (the fall) it should be covered under accidental damage. To this they responded saying that they are helpless.

As I am the one who is needy, I had no other option other than to accept to pay. They said that the sales team will contact me within 48 hours with the quotation for the required part.

After a few days I get a response that the part is not available. On inquiring about the future availability of the part, they asked me to purchase the part online or from a local vendor and get it repaired myself! Is this the kind of service your customer deserves?

I got busy in other work and did not get the laptop repaired from local repair shop and called Dell Technical support again. This time they told me that the whole motherboard needs to be replaced and it won't be covered under the warranty. Which means I will have to pay for the motherboard.

I just paid a huge amount for extending complete cover warranty by 2 years and again I am being asked to pay even a larger amount just to get my headphone jack replaced. 

Finally, I told them that it would be better to get it repaired at the local repair shop instead of paying for a whole new motherboard (That's what they had previously suggested). Now they tell me that I have no other option than to pay for the motherboard as getting it repaired from any unauthorized center will void the warranty.

I am completely stuck in this situation. My laptop is 3 years, 8 months old and from day 1 I have been complaining about the heating issue. GTX 580M throttling issue still exists and as the climate in India is hot, it is impossible to game as the clock speed and the fps keep dropping every 2-3 minutes! Even after numerous formats, motherboard change, heatsink and GPU replacements, the problem still exists. This defeats the whole purpose of the so called "GAMING" laptop.

Looks like Dell India has their own policies. They should provide the customer with more options and look forward to provide better service since they charge so much. It look like they just want to exploit their customers.

Is there any way I can tackle this problem?

Does using an external monitor have an influence on the video driver/processor required?

I'm about to buy a new laptop and am thinking about getting 15.6 screen and attaching an external monitor for better readability. Does using an external monitor have any influence on the video driver or processor I need? The machine will just be used for business applications, not for playing games.

New XPS 13 Touch: issues, questions

I'm considering the new XPS 13 Touch, i7 version. All negative 1-star reviews are because of "laggy, slow, unresponsive, horrible trackpad". What's the news about that? It's clear that many people complain about it and I don't want to join bandwagon. Also, from some posts it looks like it's windows/drivers issue, as it doesn't happen in bios.


Another question. I need 16GB or more ram. Can I add more myself? Also, if I want to swap the ssd drive for a large one, can I do that? Do I need to buy them from dell or I can use off the shelf ones? (I've read that the ssd's aren't regular there or something like that).

XPS15 9530 Poor Battery Life

Hello,

Work bought me an XPS 15 9530 in early 2014. It had very light use for the subsequent year, and was almost always used plugged in with the AC adapter. Now I have started to need to use it more without the adapter, but I notice the battery life is appalling. It was sold with up to 11h of battery life (61k mWh battery). But 'up to' cannot equate to the current 2-3h I am lucky to get - even with extremely light use.


I read on another post that the graphics drivers may be the issue, so I have updated both the Nvidia (version 353.06) and Intel (version 10.18.14.4222) drivers. This hasn't helped. I have downloaded a small program (BatteryBar) to assess the battery. It reports I have 14.7% battery wear, but surely this shouldn't impact the battery life from the advertised 'up to' 11h to 2-3h.


Does anyone know how to fix this (other than a new battery - which I have read in other posts doesn't seem to work)?


Alternatively - how do I complain to Dell, that a laptop which cost ~£1300 and was advertised with 'up to' 11h of battery life seems to be performing so appallingly below par. I have read on other posts that Dell have in the past repeated it was advertised as "up to" - but that is wholly misleading if the user actually experiences 2-3h.

I cannot run DSD, i cannot uninstall DSD therefore I cannot update drivers or use anY Dell updates or downloads.

I cannot contact application vendor unless i pay for a diagnosis yet it is Dell's software that is causing my issue.  Error Summary indicates - The deployment identity does not match the subscription  not sure what that means?
