Why do I need media to reset my Win 8.1 laptop (Insprion 11 3000)

I don't understand why I need media to refresh my WIndows 8.1 Inspiron 11. It came with Windows 8.1. IT defeats the purpose of being able to refresh if I have to supply a CD everytime, especially when I can't expect someone to have an external CD drive to do the refresh. I understood Microsoft F'd up with the whole Win 8 and Win 8.1 and needing 8.1 media to refresh an 8.1 device that started on win 8. But this laptop started on Win 8.1. It shouldn't need media to do a reset.

rows of pixels malfunctioning

I got my xps13 with QHD+ display about two weeks ago. Before yesterday, the display was perfect with no stuck or dead pixels. When I turned it on last night, I noticed that an entire row of pixels near the bottom edge was malfunctioning.

this issue occurs regardless of operating system or anything; it's even visible during the boot process when the dell logo appears.

Here is a picture:

Actually it looks like several rows are acting weird. for the bottom row it seems every other pixel works

Is there any simple fix for this?

BIOS update XPS-13 Developer Edition (Ubuntu)

1. Create a bootable FeeDos USB  I used Rufus on a windows machine.

2. While in Windows copy the BIOS executable to the USB.  And change the BIOS to an 8 or fewer character name.  DOS only sees 8 characters.

3.  Change the XPS-13's boot to legacy.  While booting, at the Dell boot screen press F2 to get to boot screen.  Near the bottom of the boot screen choose legacy boot.  (Remember the current setting because you will need it in step 7.)

4. Reboot the XPS-13 and at the Dell boot screen press F12.

5.Select the FeeDos USB boot.

6. The XPS-13 will boot to the DOS prompt.  At the DOS prompt type the name of the newly named BOIS executable, Press enter to start the update.  Give it time.  The executable will tell you when it is done.

7.  While booting,  at the Dell boot screen press F2 and change the boot setting back to their original state.

Hard drive failed on E6330

I'm not sure if I should be posting this here but since I can't find any email support link, I thought I'd try.

I have a work laptop that hit the ground pretty hard. Going throuigh the Dell testing, the HDD failed the short self test Error code 2000-0142. I have a question about a replacement. I'd like to get a SSD which doesn't look like any issue. Here's my questions:

1) This was running Win7 32-bit and I'd like to run 64-bit, btu I don't know if the board can do it. ST JWPDGV1

2) I don't remember an OS disc coming with it, but it has been a while. How do I go about getting the OS installed and authenticated, if that still has to be done? This unit was purchased as a refurbished unit.

Thanks

Hello!

I have had my Inspiron 1720 since 2008. I love my laptop and don't want to get rid of it. I am currently out of hardware space. What is the best route? I see there are two slots for an hard drive. Can I keep my hard drive and add in another one and be ok? Should I replace the older hard drive with a bigger one? Or should I just buy another laptop? Any help would be awesome!! Thank you!

A Fix for Battery Charging issues due to the "delicate proprietary chip"

I have been a Dell buyer for my own business and the over 300 of my customers for over 15 years. I bought an XPS L702x (17 inch i-7 2.7GHz with 8GB RAM) from the Dell Outlet Store for approximately 780 Dollars. It only had a 90 Day warranty which did not concern me as I assumed Dell had my back if something strange should occur. As I head my on IT business (the Barbers kids always have the worst haircuts), my wife's new Dell took the "backseat" to my many customers and to her credit she very seldomly complains.

She mentions to me that the battery won't charge so I just went to the Dell website and spent 150 bucks on a new AC adapter for her laptop assuming that would fix her issue. Note Laptop and the original adapter both came from the Dell Outlet store and NO other AC power adapter has been used on it since it was delivered to us.

After some time I decided to do maintenance on my wife's XPS L702x and discovered the real issue. At this point the 90 Day warranty was expired. I researched this and discovered exclusive only to Dell laptops a proprietary chip resides on the Motherboard that has one sole purpose; to not allow non-Dell product (batteries and AC adapters) to function in a Dell laptop.

I was sure Dell would fix this for us. I paid 780 bucks for this barely over three months ago. I call Dell support. I was told Yes, "They were familiar with my issue. It indeed was a known defect within Dell Motherboards. After a few minutes he comes back with, "Your only option is to buy a new Motherboard for about 350 Dollars"

You see there were extended warranties for a laundry-list of Motherboards but my XPS L702x was not on the list. Not on the list? This is a problem that only happens to Dell laptops containing a delicate proprietary chip (that fails by the hundreds or thousands) by forum searches! Dell did not think that a laptop sold by the Dell Outlet store and only used on Dell products failing due to a delicate proprietary chip created and installed by Dell was not Dell's responsibility.

Years ago I had an issue with Dell. It was not handled by the usual tech support so I simply called Dell Corporate office and brazingly asked for the Vice President's office. Moments later an articulate bright voice responded, "Hello, this is Michael, may I be of assistance?" To this day I believe I was speaking directly with Michael Dell but cannot be sure as I did not ask. Whomever he was, he resolved my issues and said whenever some "swims upstream" as I had it indicates their is a major issue. He assured me that this would not happen to anyone else and I left very impressed.

In 2014 when my XPS L702x issue occurred I tried to call Dell Corporate offices. Guess what? They are not posted anywhere I could find on the Internet! Yep they solved that fish "swimming upstream" issue by hiding the creek! It says a lot about a company that refuses calls to their corporate offices. The message I got and even saw reflected in a Dell Forum member (of whom is on his SECOND replacement Motherboard due to that "delicate proprietary chip" is "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on ME".

At the very least a respectable company as Dell at least once was, would simply resolve this by building a BIOS version that allowed these hundreds if not thousands of defective Motherboards to charge. If that was not possible they would have simply sent all customers owning a defective Motherboard a simple dongle that would interface with the Dell battery and the Dell AC adapter outside the laptop.

Respectable companies take ownership. I do at markwindsor dot net. I have been in business for over 15 years and I have no current disappointed customers and can count all since I began on one hand.

freeze after sleep

I have a Dell Latitude 6430 ultrabook.  I close the lid at night which goes into sleep mode.  Upon opening lid screen is black and power is on but have to force a reboot.  Looking at the windows 7-64 pro event log there is a critical error -

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Not sure if this is related to the freeze up but need a fix.

Inspirion 17 Keyboard (keys) difficult to see!

Love the new laptop EXCEPT the keys are sometimes very difficult to see - backlit or not. My old Studio 17 had white letters on black keys which was very easy to see. However that style has given way to a newer fashionable brushed aluminum key with white letters. Nice looking but pretty much dysfunctional under certain lighting conditions. Has anyone experienced the problem and what, if anything, can be done?

Windows reinstall problem

Hello

my Inspiron N5030 recently contracted some kind of spyware/adware thing (i think) wiped its hard drive, and stopped being able to use the internet. I tried to reinstall my Windows 7 system but - foolishly I'll admit - used a package originally intended for a different laptop (an Acer). It now won't boot up at all - like I can still access 'Boot Setup', but nothing beyond that stage.

Is there any way of retrieving this laptop? Is there any way of downloading the Windows 7 package that was originally preconfigured to my laptop when it was bought? I couldnt find the original media that came with it - mainly because that was nearly five years and I couldnt remember. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Memory upgrade

Hi,

so I bought this awesome Dell Vostro 3549-5822 notebook. It might be unuseful but I tried to upgrade it's workmemory (the 4GB kind, I don't know what it's named in English) to 8GB.

But when I installed the 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz memory and turned back on the laptop (after putting back the battery which was out before opening up the lapop), it beeps very loud for several times. Frightened that the total latop would be damaged I've put it off and put back the 4GB memory. Too bad now I have a (for what it looks like to me now) unuseful 8GB memory laying in my desk drawer.

What I would like to know; is there any possibility that it will work with the 8GB memory? Or maybe does the notebook have a second slot (which I don't know of) where I can put in an extra 4GB's?

Hope ya'll understand my stone coal English.

Kind regards and hope to read a solution from any of you guys soon.

I use the usb I created the recovery image on - reformat drives back to factory state - it gets to about 6% and fails

I installed windows 8.1 and can now see efi and recover partitions have been created anyone know why it is failing all the time I thought by using diskpart it would be a clean disk and should work fine ?
