dell N4050 starts after several attempts

I have a dell N4050 which is out of warranty. I installed a 4gb DDR3 RAM in december 2014 and now I have 8gb RAM. I replaced my battery as my laptop was not switching ON properly and  was also  showing warnings to replace the battery and . On pressing the power button, the lights blink and then they go off with a clicking sound. after a few seconds the system tries to turn ON again by itself but fails to turn ON. When i remove the charger/disconnect my external hard disk and all other peripherals (at random) it successfully switches on. Now when I hibernate the system, it switches ON without a hitch but if I shut it down , the system shows the same problem. I am tired of this unending sequence of problems with my laptop. Please help me!!

Inspiron 15 7000 bios?

Hello,

Over the last couple weeks my laptop has grinded to a halt and is mostly running at 100% disk all the time.  This is extremely painful as I use this machine for work only and it is starting to affect my efficiency during the day.  I read on another post from a user with the same issue they were able to disable Speedstep in the bios and it helped quite a bit. I have tried to access the bios by clicking F2 and CTRL-F1 from the Dell logo boot screen, but it always just restarts the machine.  Is there another way to get into the bios?

Thanks,

Zac

Waking XPS13-9343 from Sleep via Keyboard

I've got a new XPS13-9343, and it seems to be working well. I am unable, though, to figure out a configuration setting that will enable me to use the keyboard (as opposed to the power switch) to awaken the machine from sleep while plugged into a power outlet.

Most often, I use the PC with docking station, external monitor, USB keyboard and mouse, and so I leave it closed on my desktop. It is very inconvenient to have to open it to access the power button for awakening from sleep.

I suppose I could disable sleep entirely when the unit is plugged in, but I'd like to avoid that if possible. I have tried all the sleep settings that appear potentially relevant, including disabling USB Selective Suspend and PCI Express Link State Power Management while plugged in. I can't find any other options that look promising.

I'd be grateful for suggestions.

USB 3.0 not working after fresh Windows install

$

Problem summary: After a fresh install of Win7 SP1, my laptop's two USB 3.0 ports cannot read/write USB 3.0 flash drives. The same ports can read/write USB 2.0 flash drives (and external USB 2.0 drives). Both USB 2.0 and 3.0 flash drives work fine in the third USB (2.0) port.

Details

  • Inspiron 17R N7110 laptop running Windows 7 SP1
  • Equipped with two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port
  • Hard drive failure, replaced the hard drive, re-installed Win 7 SP1 from Dell install CD.
  • Ran all of the Windows updates.
  • Installed drivers from the Dell website.
  • Installed MS Office 2013 and several other applications.

The laptop  is running very well except for the USB 3.0 problem. The one USB 2.0 port is behaving fine. However, the two USB 3.0 "superspeed ports" are wonky.

The 3.0 ports cannot read/write a 3.0 flash drive The 3.0 ports can read/write a 2.0 flash drive. The 2.0 port can read/write both 2.0 and 3.0 flash drives

When I insert a 3.0 flash drive into a 3.0 port, the drive shows up in Windows Explorer (as E: or F:), but then I am unable to do anything else. I can't read the contents, can't format the drive, can't "safely eject". If I remove the flash drive, it will remain showing in Windows Explorer until I reboot.

In Device Manager, everything shows as working fine. Windows says all drivers are up-to-date.  In Task Manager, I can see a process called USB 3.0 Monitor (nusb3mon.exe *32).

I have done several hours worth of experimentation and testing. I'm sure the problem is not with the flash drives.

Here is what I've done:

Experimented with different flash drives on different ports and on different machines. Narrowed it down to being a port problem on this machine.

Ran Dell system analysis. Drivers are up to date. Except it tells me to install 2 drivers that I've already installed. It recommends I install BIOS (already done that twice) and it recommends to install "Intel Management Interface Driver" R292744, which I have already done. Not sure why it's recommending those over and over.

Ran Dell Diagnostics. Everything passes, even the advanced USB test.

Ran the IOLO System Checkup. It cleaned up some registry clutter, emptied my recycle bin, cleaned up temporary internet files and fixed a "sign of corruption" on drive C:. Now chkdsk finds no problems with the drive.

Prior to this fresh install of Windows, I never tried USB 3.0 devices on this machine, so I can't say for certain whether or not this problem existed earlier.

I'm not an expert, but I have a feeling it's a driver or Windows Service issue.  I'm stumped at this point what to do next.

Greetings,

I bought my dell laptop in the U.S. roughly 4 years ago, but at the moment I live in Spain. The thing is I need to buy a new AC adapter but i am not completely sure whether I should buy an american adapter and have it shipped to Spain or just get a spanish adapter from dell.es. As far as i know the voltage is different? In any case, any feedback or advice regarding compatibilty between these regions would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Inspiron 15 (3537) with Windows 8.1 64 bit touchpad issue

$

Hi there.

I've had an Inspiron 15 for the last year or so now and I continue to have problems with the touchpad. These mainly manifest when I do a two-fingered scroll - sometimes it works, sometimes it freezes up. If I'm particularly unlucky the screen gives out for a few seconds while the laptop decides what to do.

How can I fix this please?

Though my driver says it's working fine, I have tried using the product support page and get the following message:

We are unable to find the selected device. The device driver for your selected diagnostic is either not installed or installed incorrectly. Please ensure your device is enabled through your device manager or go to Drivers and Downloads to install the latest driver.

When I go to install the recommended driver it says I have a more recent one (I have 17.0.13.0 dated 06/09/2013). The recommended driver is 17.0.11.1, but the release date (19/11/2013) is actually later.

shut-off Inspiron Keyboard and Touchpad after Windows Update

My Inspiron 15 keyboard and touchpad stopped working yesterday after a Windows update.  This happened several weeks ago (though I think the touchpad continued to work but am not sure) after a Windows update. The technical support people insisted it was a hardware not a software problem, but I think otherwise. The functionality returned a couple of weeks later after another Windows update.  That also was not the first time the keyboard became problematic.

No bootable device found - yet it starts up windows normally

My laptop recently was doused in some water, automatically removed the battery and set it up so that it would dry completely over the course of around 12-14 hours. Started it up after reinstalling the battery and it said twice 'No Boot Device Found' and said to press any key to reboot. Did so, and after the second time it booted correctly and started windows (8.1) and everything is running correctly. I've started it up three times now, and it goes through the same sequence- 2x no boot device found, then boots up normally.

EPSA couldn't find the hdd at first, but upon re-running the tests specifically on the hdd it can. And to mention- all other hardware is running perfectly, passed all tests. I'm concerned about the warning and the test, but other than those two things- it runs fine. No lagging, weird noises, or anything. Should I replace the hdd just to be safe, or do I need to do something else to resolve the error message?

Hard Drive Replacement/OS Reinstall

The hard drive in my Dell Studio 1749 died without warning and I did not create a recovery disk.  I do not have the Windows 7 installation disks.  The laptop came with all of the software pre-loaded.  I have a new hard drive, but have not installed it.

After I install the new hard drive, can I use the recovery disk from my Dell XPS desktop to install the operating system, and then go online to reinstall the remaining factory installed software?

Unable to connect to wireless networks

$

Hi,

I have a Latitude 3540 (Late 2013) that has difficulty connecting to wireless networks.  It can connect to a "normal" wireless ok (enter key, hit ok) but on open wireless hotspots, such as in a hotel, that redirect you to a website to log in, it will not work.

What I expect to see is a dialogue box in the bottom right hand cornet of the screen telling me that I need to enter info, which then opens up a browser to allow me to do so or I expect it to do nothing, but when I open my browser and try to go to a page I expect it to redirect me to the log in page then.

This laptop does neither.  when I open a browser it just tells me that it cannot connect to the website I have requested.

I have seen suggestions that this is a common fault with some dell laptops and it was suggested that browsing to the default gateway on the network that I am trying to connect to would be a work round, but I have tried this and it does not work.

Any ideas?  is there a patch for this?

Thanks

Cosma
