SSD and Windows 8

Hello!
I have laptop Dell Inspiron 7720. I just bought this laptop and this is my first Dell pc.
Dell is giving us an opportunity to use SSD, that's great! Yes
But for using the advantages of this SSD my OS should be situated on it (it's sad that Dell is not inserting SSd with installed OS in their laptops at once).
How is it possible to move my OS to SSD for using on this laptop?
I wanted to move the OS Windows 8 to SSD and I was looking for the advice on different sites, like Dell, Microsoft and just everywhere in Internet but without any positive result. Crying I received a different errors.
Could you please tell me any RIGHT way to do it?
Thank you very much!

SSD driver for Inspiron 1545

Hi Gurus,

I have an 4-years old Dell laptop Inspiron 1545, and I plan to buy a SSD drive to replace the harddisk. My questions are:

1. Will Inspiron 1545 support SATA II or SATA III?

2. Any one has experience to install Samsung ssd 840 120GB SSD drive on it? I found some forums talk about this SSD driver, but not sure if it can be detected by this old laptop.

Dear Dell Team.

Dead Inspiron M5030

The warranty expired on my Inspiron 15 M5030, so I purchased an extended warranty. The laptop started to exhibit the 7 beep syndrome and then refused to boot. So I sent it back to dell and they refused to fix it, saying there was liquid spilled on the keyboard and I would have to pay an additional $350 + or - to get it fixed. Since a new one just like it was on sale for $350, I had them send it back. I also know that there was no liquid spilled on the keyboard, as I took it to my computer repair teacher for an in class project. We tested it from one end to the other and determined that the motherboard was dead.

So, now I am looking for a new motherboard and processor for the laptop. Will any other motherboard fit in the M5030? I have been unable to find any reasonably priced ones from anyone reputable. $299 was one price I encountered.

Dell has always been my computer of choice, even though their customer service sucks big time. I have purchased 8 desktops, and 3 laptops, plus helped several people "build" a computer through Dell, but will probably try to find another brand.

Hello..... I have Inspiron 14r 5420 ( with windows 8) . Since it was giving too much of problem I reformatted my laptop and reinstall windows using a new original windows 8 CD. Nowedays whenever I set my computer to perform secure boot, it does not boot and it shows the boot menu ( the screen shows some options like the one whenever you tap F12 when the BIOS is loading ).

I can either boot :

1) Legacy Boot                             : enable

UEFI Boot / secure Boot         : disable

2)UEFI Boot                                  : enable

Legacy Boot / secure boot     : disable

    Load Legacy Rom                   : enable

My BIOS version is A16

This the link where I download the BIOS : http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/my/en/mydhs1/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-14r-5420?driverId=MFC3R&osCode=W864&fileId=3177644689&languageCode=EN&categoryId=BI

Driver page of my laptop : http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/my/en/mydhs1/Product/inspiron-14r-5420

My question is how do I setup / configure the UEFI Firmware, EFI  or secure boot in my laptop so that my laptop can boot in secure boot

Dell inspiron LCD doesn't after power on but I can hear windows start up sound

I have inspiron n5110. It's 2 yrs old. I recently replaced the body base from dell (One time parts upgrade). The techman came to me and replaced it.

After the replacement I'm facing a problem. If I start up laptop, my LCD doesn't start and I can hear windows start up sound in background. If I press power button again(laptop goes to sleep) and again(laptop wakes up) then I can see my screen starts. Once the screen starts up, if I reboot my laptop the problem doesn't occur again. It's only happening if I keep my laptop shutdown for a long time and then power on.

Can anyone tell me what is the issue? Did the techman do something wrong while assembling the laptop? Actually this problem didn't occur in front of him so that I can show him. Please help me what to do with this problem?

Dell E6530 Backlit Keyboard Compatibility

During a recent search and buy for an E6530 backlit keyboard replacement I found the US keyboards were either (a) not available at the time, or (b) too expensive.

Looking at the keyboard itself they struck me as being similar to the ones used in other Dell models.  A little research turned up a possibility from the E6520, M4600, and M6600 lines.   I ended up ordering one with the part number "HG3G3", also written as "0HG3G3".  The keyboard installed and works perfectly.

Here's an external URL for other who may be wanted to upgrade their Latitude E6530 to a backlit keyboard.  This URL searches US keyboard part number.  Other countries has similar possibilities as well using part numbers for the respective region / language keyboard.

Keyboard Maintenance:

Here are some enhanced instructions for use when disconnecting / reconnecting the flat ribbon cable used to connect the keyboard to the chassis. They were developed from my own experience today performing the keyboard swap.  I have found the standard Dell Latitude E6530 Owner's manual instructions to be sorely lacking in detail.  However, you should read and understand the owner's manual as well when using the instructions below.

Please bear in mind I am a private person and have never been a Dell employee.  But I have many years working on Dell systems of all types including laptops from the D600 up to the current Latitude and Precision laptops.  This includes completely stripping and building a chassis.

Keyboard Connector Note: Both keyboard connectors, on the system side and on the keyboard side, use flip style latch mechanisms to secure the cable in the connector.   When dis-connecting the flat white ribbon cable use your fingernail or a small plastic spudger to lift the latch before removing the ribbon cable.  When removing the ribbon cable, the cable is slid out of the connector.  On the keyboard side the ribbon cable is also held in place by a small amount of adhesive.  See note and pictures below.

Disconnection Note:  When removing the keyboard, disconnect the cable from the system side first.  Wait until the keyboard is free from the system to work on removing the cable from the keyboard side connector.

System Side, Keyboard Ribbon Cable Removal:

To disconnect the ribbon cable from the system side:

Flip up the connector latch to release the cable.  Then slide the ribbon cable out of the connector.

Keyboard Side, Keyboard Ribbon Cable Removal:

The ribbon cable on the keyboard side connector is secured to the keyboard using three things:

  • A short 2 or 3 inch strip of yellow Kapton tape (1'4 inch width) covering the main  ribbon connector, as well as another connector and second ribbon cable.
  • The connector latch for the ribbon cable connector.
  • Adhesive on the back of the main keyboard ribbon cable near the connector latch.

Remove the yellow Kapton tape first.  It is suggested that you peel the tape away starting from the left side (furthest from the number pad) and work your way to the right side.  The reason is there is another piece of tape and connector that you will want to leave in place.  Working from left to right will allow you to remove only the yellow tape from the main ribbon connector and and ribbon cable, while leaving the other tape and connector unaffected.  When removing the Kapton tape you may have to use you fingers to hold the other components in place.

When you remove the Kapton tape, please reserve the tape for reuse on the new keyboard, unless you have a roll of this stuff to put some new tape in place.

Next, flip up the connector latch to release the cable.  The cable will be loose.  But the it will stay in place because of the small amount of adhesive on the back of the ribbon cable.

Next, slowly and carefully  peel the main keyboard ribbon cable away from the keyboard.   When doing so you will need to use your fingers on the back of the keyboard to hold down the plastic the ribbon cable is adhered to.

Keyboard Reassembly:

Keyboard Connector Reassembly Note:  The ribbon cable needs to slide into place for the keyboard connector on the system side, and on the keyboard side.  Only after the cable is slid into place under a very small guide lip on the connector can the connector latch be successfully closed.  Here are a few picture showing the connector and cable on the keyboard side with the connector unlatched.

Keyboard Connector Reassembly Note:  Connect the keyboard ribbon cable to the keyboard first before finishing assembly to the rest of the system.

Keyboard Reassembly:

To reassemble, reverse the previous procedures note above.   When reassembling the keyboard side, insert the cable into the connector first before adhering the ribbon cable to the back of the keyboard.

I hope the alternative part number and  the enhanced keyboard maintenance instructions have help your quest to improve or repair your Dell laptop.

Memory added to laptop - can it add problems?

I bought a Dell Inspiron 5050 from eBay, said new, and it has 8 GB memory instead of 4GB.  I wonder if the added memory would add any issues to this laptop?  Such as with start-up, especially.

Precision M4600/VMWare/Visual Studio 2012

I am experiencing a frustrating issue with my (relatively) new Precision M4600. I've googled for an answer (and posted on another forum) but haven't been able to solve it.

Briefly, my laptop was bought about 6 months ago. I upgraded the RAM to 24GB, added an SSD and proceeded to install my software (I didn't upgrade any drivers). In particular I installed VMWare Player, created a Windows 8 VM with 4GB RAM and inside that installed VS2012, among other C# development tools. I use this VM setup on other computers to great advantage. The problem is: it is virtually impossible to type code inside VS2012 inside this particular VM. The keyboard sticks, skips, and other operations (e.g. code highlighting with the arrow keys) are similarly erratic. The mouse works OK, the keyboard seems to work inside the VM in things like Notepad, and the keyboard works fine in VS2012 if it is installed on the Precision directly. I just can't do development work on the Precision like I do on other computers; i.e. inside the Windows 8 VM, inside VS2012.

I'm not saying it's the Dell's "fault", I realize it is most likely Microsoft's (Big Smile) or maybe VMWare's, I'm just asking if anyone might suggest some troubleshooting tips (I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, disabling the touchpad, etc.). Another keyboard driver? The problem is the Precision becomes, while not useless, much less valuable to me if I can't develop inside the VM.

Again, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Dell Inspiron N4110 Not Switching On

Hi. About a week ago, I started getting weird blue screens, but they stopped in 2 days. But when I was using it yesterday, it suddenly switched off! No blue screen, no sound, nothing! When I tried to switch it back on, the fan went on and those buttons near the power button lit up, but faded immediately. All the LEDs lit up except for the second one. I've tried taking the battery out, starving it of energy, charging it and even 'flea power' but none of them have worked. Please help.

Vostro 2420: Cannot remove keyboard.

I bought my wife a Vostro 2420 and. while she likes it, it is incredibly slow and sluggish when booting up and booting programs.   I've removed all the bloatware, etc but it is still a digital sloth.   I decided to do a fresh OS install with a faster hard drive (birthday!), but for the life of me, I cannot get the keyboard off.  I've watched videos, followed the instruction manual here, but it's as if the sucker is glued down.   If I try to pry it up at the spots circled in the instructions, it seems as if just the plastic between the keys wants to come up, but the keys don't move.   Also, when I pry, it looks as if the keyboard is held down along the side edges as well as the top and bottom.

HELP!.
