Hi

i recently bought a second hand alienware and i am constantly getting driver power state failure bsod

is this the code you need for someone clevere than me to tell me whats causing the problem

Have had laptop for almost 2 years.  Started the issue of not coming on sometimes about two weeks ago. Now will not come on at all. The power light comes on and the "settings, windows and energy star" lights come on that are located at top right, and everything goes back off immediately. The power button clicks and that's it. Have tried the "power release"  and did not help.  We have  2 of these laptops, purchased within 6 months apart. The first one had to be sent back to Dell twice in first six months and both times they replaced the motherboard.  Most expensive laptops I ever purchased and the worst I ever purchased.  Can anyone tell me what can be the problem?

Issues with two finger scrolling on the alienware 15 synaptic touchpad running windows 8.1

Hello, as the title states, I am having issues with my two finger scrolling with my touchpad. My computer is a new alienware 15, and I am currently running windows 8.1. I do have two finger scrolling enabled, and it works, it just acts weirdly and I would like help understanding what is going on.

This first and primary issue, is that while scrolling up or down a page, I will randomly jump way down the page or way up the page. I am not able to reproduce this issue consistently, so I haven't been able to properly measure it, it just occurs randomly while browsing. I believe it always jumps down while scrolling down and vise versa, but I'm not sure. And I believe the distance of the jump is about equal to page up or page down, but that might just be wishful thinking. I have no idea what is causing this, I have completely disabled tapping, so it shouldn't be zone tapping for page up and page down, but I don't know what else it could be.

The next thing isn't really an issue, but more something I'd like to understand the significance of. When I start the two finger scrolling gesture, a little box appears (seemingly in a random location) and shrinks away almost instantly. It seems to have nothing to do with where my mouse is, nor where my fingers are on the trackpad, so I really don't understand what it's communicating to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Studio. Model number PP39L. My laptop worked just fine last night. It was still on this morning. I closed it down this morning. Went to do school work and now get a blank screen. The keyboard comes on. I hear the fan. There are no beeps. I have done the take the battery press power button...doesn't work. I have done the hold down D and power button. It does all the colors on the screen and then eventually turns off. I have tried a different adapter. And I have tried hooking it up to a monitor. Any other suggestions.

Turning on Inspiron 13 w/ D3100 docking station

When I have my Inspiron 13 connected to the docking station, I can only turn on the laptop if I open the cover.  With the cover closed, no amount of activating the "on" switch seems to work.  Am I missing some setting or other trick?

Dell E-port plus docking procedure

I have a few users that are running windows 8.1 and Windows 7 on this model dock and they were asking what the proper procedure for undocking it is and honestly I thought you could jsut clcik the eject button. Seems to work but then a colleage told me that the laptop should be put to sleep or be in hibernation mode before it's undocked. The manual does not say so though.

Dell SupportAssist causing fans to run high, and causing audio distortion in notebooks.

It has been reported on the following thread that Dell SupportAssist is causing cooling fans to run at higher speed and possible audio distortion. Dell has a hotfix available. We do suggest that you keep the software installed on the notebook, or reinstall it if you have removed it.

You can find more on what Support Assist here on its community page.

You can install SupportAssist here
* under the "End User" tab, click "SupportAssist for PCs and tablets"
* Download/save the file "aulauncher.exe" to your windows desktop
* Run the file
* Reboot when done
* Download/save the hotfix from this share
* Double-click the exe file. You should get a message saying “Successfully applied the hotfix, please reboot your system for the changes to take effect”

USB Not Recognized problem

Hi all,


Both my wife and I are having the same problems on our Laptops which is quite strange. Her laptop is Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 and Mine  Alienware M17R.

Basically ALL the USB slots on our laptops stop working on and off. Hers is worse then mine. I really don't know what to do. Now i don't know if this is something that can be fixed with software or if it is a Motherboard problem. Seems strange for All of the USB slots to give out at same time.

Sorry i will answer any questions to give more details, not sure what else to say other then this is driving us nuts!

how can i get CD out ? it is not 'push button' door but 'slide in' slot !

hey guys.

  Im trying to download drivers and basic installation files from the product support site. I earlier downloaded a 3mb wifi driver using my smartphone data on a cell tower network. but now that im at home and tryin to download the same files it just hangs on "resolving host" and then says "this webpage is unavailable"..

   is this a problem with my router? is there a port i need to open or somethin to allow everything inside my network to get to the downloads.dell.com website? anything i try to download from there (all these drivers and applications).. ie) Alienware Command Center Application, it just keeps timing out.

can anyone assist me in figuring out why this is happening?

New XPS 13 PXE boot?

Hi, can anyone tell me with certainty if this product:

(If the link does not work, which it appears to not work for me, the Dell part number is 443-BBBD)

will allow me to PXE boot the new XPS 13 (early 2015)? The product page says it is compatible with the "Venue" but doesn't mention any other systems. I can't find drivers for it to preload in my WinPE image - will the device be recognized by the BIOS and newer WinPE versions? I just need an easy way to deploy our internal Windows image to the XPS that has no NIC. Any other product will do... if it will work!


Studio 1558 - not booting

I purchased my Studio 1558 about 5 years ago and I have been told by a technician that my computer is done.  They cannot figure out what is wrong with it but believe it is a corrupted BIOS (they tired flashing the BIOS but no luck doing this) or processor issue.  I can't believe after this short period it is completely inoperable.  Problem started with regular blue screen dumps and not being able to boot up without safe mode.  I was originally convinced that it was an issue with Windows 7 updates since the instability would occur after critical updates.  I've tried restore points and all of the rest.  I am at a complete loss at this point and extremely frustrated.  Having paid $1500 for this laptop I felt I was buying a quality product.  Turns out I was wrong.  I'm open to any suggestions or if you have a method to direct me to a complaint's department I'd appreciate it?.  Very frustrated with the entire customer service process at Dell which is insult to injury when dealing with a faulty product!

Has anyone heard from Dell on this docking issue with the 7240 and 7440?  I currently have a VP who went through three laptop shells and the issue still persists.  I have ran bios/driver updates as well as replacing docking station and power supply.  Has any sort of conclusion been made on this issue?

D531 won't power up.

I have a Dell Latitude D531 that won't power up.  I did notice a couple days earlier while using it  would kind of shut down.  It would be still running all light indicators would be lit and fan running.  But the display would dim out you could see there was something there but it was almost blacked out.  I would hold the start button down until the computer shut down.  It would re start and all was well for 5 or 6 hours.  Well the last time it did this I noticed the area on the left under side was real warm.  After this shut down it wouldn't start up any more.  The only light I get now is the battery light while it is plugged in to its power cord.  Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to do to repair it?  Thanks in advance for any help that might be out there.  Bob

The more I work with laptops (Dell or otherwise) the more paranoid I get about updating drivers.


I recently purchased a refurbished Latitude E6420 and Windows Update is showing an optional update available for my:

nVidia - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Other hardware - NVIDIA NVS 4200M

published: 11/4/2014

The nVidia control panel shows that my current version is 311.93, and device manager shows driver version 9.18.13.1193, and driver date 7/8/2013 (this the version listed on the Dell ftp site)

I got into trouble with my mother's Inspiron 15 trying to update the AMD graphics driver, so I don't want to open that box of hurt again with this unit.

For the sake of full disclosure, device manager shows the driver version for my Intel HD Graphics Family is 8.15.10.2353 with a date of 4/4/2011 (that's old school). The Dell ftp site shows 9.17.10.3040 with date 4/19/2013 ... should I be installing that?

What driver versions should I using for these adapters and where can I get them (if not from the Dell ftp site)?

Latitude E5430 doesn't recognize own power cord

I have a Dell Latitude E5430 that periodically gives me the error message: "The power adapter attached to your notebook is not recognized. Please insert a 65-wat Dell approved power adapter."

The problem is that it's the very Dell adapter that came with the machine. I've never plugged anything but its own adapter to it. Usually I can just ignore the message, but the other day after half the day I suddenly realized that the computer was running on the battery. I clicked on the battery logo and it said, "Plugged in but not charging." Which I assume is related to the same problem.

I restarted the computer and it worked as normal, but I am a tad concerned as to why it doesn't seem to recognize its own charger all the time. I've been getting the error message off and on since I bought the computer in 2013.
