Hi, 

This may end up being a monitor or docking station question.  

I have the following hardware connected: 

• Dell M6800 (Windows 8)
• Dell U2412M Monitor 
• Dell docking station (will add the model later when I am able to unplug everything. )

The monitor is plugged into the docking station via a DisplayPort lead and is set to auto-detect the input.  I also have an old HP desktop PC plugged into this same monitor via DVI.

Problem is that virtually every time I start the laptop the monitor does not detect the signal from the laptop and I have to start the desktop PC (power on for 3-5 seconds) for the monitor to wake and detect the laptop.  I got the docking station recently and this problem has now become the norm whereas in the past it was an occasional problem. 

Anyone got any ideas? 

Also, anyone know how to detect the docking station model without unplugging and turning upside down?

just installed windows 8.1 on a ssd which was going well but hit a major brick wall

I cant install the wireless card / bluetooh drivers as I keep getting this error

tried a few of the suggestions brought up by google but none work, im really stuck. been stuck for hours now
can anyone help?
ive got a dell inspiron 5748
downloaded the latest drivers plus the older version but get the same issue. ive got the 17", ive downloaded the 15" version which seems to be newer but same issue.

totally lost and not sure what to do

Can someone direct me to the process for turning off the touchpad when using an external Bluetooth mouse on my XPS 13 9343? I can go through device manager and disable the touchpad but the touchpad is enabled each time I restart the machine. There must be an easier way that I can't find.

Hello, I know this problem was already encountered and solved for a lot of people by deleting Dell SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist Agent, but for me it doesn't change anything. If someone has another solution I will be very grateful !

I just signed up with the community as my M17xr4 ran into an issue yesterday with the new Dell Support Assistant causing my fans to run at high speed after bootup. I actually have to close my laptop and allow it to go to sleep, then wake it up again so the fans go back to normal. After reading many posts on other forums about this issue, the work around I found so far was to go to RUN and type Services.msc and change the Dell Support Assistant, Dell DataVault entries to MANUAL and all seems fine now. 

I read that this is due to the Support Assist finding a flaw in the BIOS but I'm not one to flash my BIOS as this is my primary work laptop and I can't afford risking bricking it. I miss my Alien Autopsy :)

I had to install from the scratch everything to my laptop.

I'm using a external wireless to be connected in the internet.

This laptop uses windows 8.1

All the drivers install without any problem but the one who is for wireless + bluetoooth doesn't install.

The driver in mention is Network_Driver_GR38D_WN_6.30.223.245_A03.EXE . In the installation the software ask me to 'Activate Bluetooth using Wireless Switch. I have no idea where to go since I have no wireless installed.  The only option is to cancel the installation.

The driver  hardware id is: PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0036&SUBSYS_020C1028&REV_01


I will appreciate any suggestion

  Laptop: Inspiron 15 3521 (Late 2012).

              I need  help, i want to know whether any graphic card is available in my laptop, if yes than how to identify and install drivers, as in device manager display section it is showing only Intel HD 4000 and nothing else. but someone has told me that in my laptop model there is inbuilt amd radeon graphic card. i have to confirm whether it is true. if it is then why it is not shown in device manager. my os is win 7 ultimate 32 bit.

I really like the large display and keyboard on my 2007 Inspiron laptop (running Vista) but it's terribly slow and some new applications won't work well on it, if at all. So I'm considering upgrading it to Win 7, doubling RAM to 4 GB and switching out the hard drive for a solid state replacement. I think that will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $300. So is it worth it or would I be better off biting the bullet and springing for a new large laptop.  I almost went for the upgrade route when some of the posts I read alerted me to potential problems with getting Win 7 drivers to run on old hardware and I didn't want to go to the effort and expense and find that it was wasted. If someone out there has experience doing this I would very much appreciate learning about it. Thanks in advance. Fred

I had recently updated my laptop. The newer laptop let me use face recognition (FastAccess). Right after I updated, everytime after I log in my screen turns black. The laptop is still running but it's black. I turn it off and on multiple times to no avail. What should I do?

Hi,

I think I may have partitioned off my OS as under UEFI onboard NIC  IPV4  there is a PCI root but no file name in boot list.

I do not have a system restore disk to hand though have asset tag, product id etc. I am in full warranty

I cannot progress beyond running diagnostics at boot.

On one occasion somehow by chance I button pressed at power on and launched windows command shell. How do I recreate this?

Or how do I view partition info, check of files are still present etc?

I have read all the online resources, live chat is closed, contact by e-mail is invalid as a link, my wireless lan, bluetooth, wireless WAN are all showing as not installed though the cards are there etc and were working.

Boot path says MBR of Hard drive 0

Would really appreciate any help with:

Can anyone help me to find a way to either get hold of the elusive support team by e-mail or live chat

Launch shell command at boot and run restore file

(I noted there were no file mappings.)

Launch a restore exe file from a USB or via Ethernet connection?

Reset to factory settings somehow in hope will have windows 7 up and running?

Any other advice?

Have searched forums, read manual, don't have restore disk, am in warranty.

Two weeks ago I bought a brand new Dell XPS 13 through the dell website.  Ever since I've had it, it has lagged on the internet.  I've tried internet explorer, google chrome, and firefox. They all lag and are slow. Google Chrome is the worst.  It's not my internet connection because I've used the laptop on 5 or more networks with the same result.  Can someone please tell me how I can fix this??? With this one problem aside I love this laptop and want to keep it but I have to fix this lagging issue.  Thank you so much to anyone who can help!

Today my mum wa son my laptop (dell latitude e6400)  and the little bar that opens express card sloth is out and cant get in in anymor. If I press it in, the tloth comes out. Hope I made myself clear enough... any ideas how to fix it? i have never seen this before. Thank you

My laptop has been acting up since yesterday. The fans will kick on super high for 30 seconds and in that time my keyboard/trackpad stop working. Also, my DVD port or whatever keeps searching for a DVD when there's nothing in there. 

Other users (with Alienware 14 laptops) have told me they've experienced this as well, starting yesterday after an downloading a windows update.

I've already talked with Support via phone and my laptop passed every diagnostic test we ran. I'd like to figure this out because it's getting (understandably) annoying.

It keeps searching for a disc but nothing is in there. It will randomly start up, make a noise like it's loading a disc, and then go quiet. Is there a way to make it stop doing this?

Hi, I just really need some advice. I keep having issues with my laptop, and I'm at a loss for what the problem is. I don't know if I may have a computer virus, I've been hacked, or if it's a problem in some other way just with the computer.

Operating System: Windows 7
System Manufacturer: Dell
System Model: Inspiron M5040

What's Wrong:
1.) My mouse has a mind of its own. It won't click things by itself, but it keeps randomly moving on its own. It's very annoying, because it makes it difficult to click on what I actually want it to click on. Plus you know how if you pinch your fingers on the track pad it'll zoom in and out? It constantly will do this, which makes it even harder to operate. Sometimes it will go back to the previous pages when I'm really trying to work on something important. I've frequently cleaned the track pad very well.

2.) It'll automatically type the most random things. Like "-==--=", it's always up there in that area of the keyboard, and pretty much just dashes and equal signs.

3.) It'll just randomly crash sometimes. Especially after #2 happens. It'll then start back up once I hit the on button again, and asks me if I want to run in safe more or start regularly. Also, sometimes before it crashes, if I am using Chrome, another tab may open by itself and go to the Chrome Help page.

I feel like maybe I have a bad virus or something because I've read these could be signs of that, but for the life of my computer, I've had Norton Security System and I've ran probably hundreds of hours of scans. However, my yearly subscription just ran out, so I've switched to AVG in the last week. There was never a point where I was without protection.

Additional Info: Before my Norton had expired, I downloaded AVG and ran a free scan. The first scan that was ran, a Trojan Horse was discovered. No other things have been found since. I don't know where to further check if there's problems other than running the scans. If you think it is a virus/ hack please give me advice on how to get rid of it?

So a few days ago, I (and some other number of people it seems based on this forum) started to have issues with my laptop buzzing and pausing at short intervals while watching youtube, playing music, or gaming. I was able to find a post on this forum relating to the issue which suggested uninstalling Dell SupportAssist and SupportAssistAgent. (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19618183)  

I proceeded to do this and everything seemed seemed to be working fine. The buzzing was now gone when I played videos or music; however, when I tried to play a game, the problem was still there. I've already tried updating my drivers and I doubt the problem is overheating, since my computer  wasn't really getting that hot.

If anyone could offer any help on finding a solution, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've had this problem for a while, now.  I get the "ac power adapter cannot be determined" every time I turn on the laptop.  Charger works when charging my other laptop.

 When plugged in, the charger will maintain the current battery life, but will not actually charge it.

Blue light at the end of the charger comes on, and battery health is good.

I have tried:

Restarting the computer, turning the computer off over night, taking out the battery, taking out the battery and holding the power button for 15 seconds.  Any possible solutions would be appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 32- bit laptop with 2 GB RAM and windows vista basic

I had to install a new hard drive since the old one had failed.

I have installed windows vista basic using installation CD from dell that came with the computer and all the drivers but one (as mentioned below) by using drives CD from dell.

I have installed all the windows update as prompted.

The only driver I could not install ( do not have an idea how to ) is

Serial ATA drivers – intel matrix storage manager

Because it gives the option of selecting 32 or 64- bit version but then no option to install it ( I did not see an exe file). I tried to download this driver from Dell website but same issue.

I am also having issues with internet explorer (currently it is IE 7) and when I select to download IE 9 it gives me message that it is not compatible with 32-bit computer.

I have tried to open and download IE from other websites, even tried to install google, fire fox but keep getting the message on all webistes that

IE cannot open the internet site “http//……”

Operation aborted.

Please advise

So I bought a new Alienware 13 not two days ago. Windows 8.1. I was on Twitch when suddenly the touch pad's scrolling capabilities stopped working. All online tutorials tell me to access to access the control panel through the start screen. The tutorial tells me to move my mouse to the lower right side of the screen in choose "settings." Next I'm supposed to chose "control panel" but that option doesn't exist. I have a button to access the control panel in the "PC settings" page but it doesn't do anything. Does anyone know what the problem is?
