Inspiron 17R SE (7720, Mid 2012) - not powering up

Hello everyone,

I own a Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720.

Recently, out of nowhere the computer is not powering up. I plug the power cable in (without the battery) and the caps lock key's light lights up but nothing else happens.

Once I place the battery into the laptop with the power cable, the third light on the front of the laptop (below the touchpad) lights up in this sequence and keeps repeating itself:

  • Amber/red
  • Amber/red
  • Amber/red
  • Amber/red
  • White

Then repeats from beginning.

I have tried the usual, power discharge by making sure all power sources are removed and holding down the power button for 60secs. Tried with known-working RAM and also with an external monitor - no luck.

There are no other POST notifications that I can see, no beeps etc. Just the lights on the front which only happens when the battery is plugged in with the power cord. I cannot find anywhere in the manual what the lights mean.

I really appreciate anyone's contributions.

Thanks,

Liam

Factory settings

Hi, this problem seems to be very fairly common, yet very difficult to solve. I am trying to do a restore to factory settings on my Dell Inspiron 1420 using Vista. Unfortunately the F8, F11, F12, and all other F options do not help me (something about a deleted partition??). Soooo, I am trying to locate the discs to use to do this action. I have heard that those are free under warranty, but my computer is from 2007 so is obviously not under warranty. I have done some digging around on the Dell website and have had a difficult time locating any such discs. Does anyone think these discs exist? And if so how do I get one? I am willing to buy them from Dell if only i can find a way to do so. If anyone has a link that could send me these discs I would be thrilled!!!! Thanks, i  advance!

New Dell XPS 13 Signature, is the fan supposed to be this loud?

Just got a new Dell XPS 13 (2015) Signature Edition from Microsoft. Great design, lightweight, and the battery life is nice.

Problem is, whenever the fan comes on, which is pretty often, it is *loud*, seems to be spinning fast, and has a bit of a high-pitched whine to it. There is no way I could ever take this laptop to work or a conference if it is going to be this loud.

I have updated the BIOS and other related drivers from the support site, but to no avail. I've run a multitude of the Dell Diagnostic scans, and they all come back fine. Is this intended? If so, I think I will be forced to return it - much to my dismay.

Dell Inspiron 15 3521 - Not registering AC Adapter

Hi there,

I've had a Dell Inspiron 15 3521 since May 2013; it has been updated to Windows 8.1, 4GB RAM, etc. It's been a great laptop in all honesty.

However, in the last few weeks, I've had some issues with the laptop booting up. Originally, it would turn on, but then stick with a black screen (no other sounds of the computer starting up), and then beep 7 times. Per another forum post I read, that's indicative of a Processor Failure.

In this case, I'd remove AC Power, the battery, give it about 15-20 seconds, then reconnect the charger. The laptop would turn back on, no problems. I'd end up popping the battery back in a little later, and it'd charge with no issues. This has been my fix in the meantime for the last month or so.

Now, I can't get my laptop to even register that it's connected to AC Power. It'll just stay black, and then beep 7 times in a row repeatedly. I've tried using another AC Adapter, in the case my adapter died, and no such luck.

What are my options? My laptop is no longer under warranty, though I do have my service tag.

Inspiron 1545 shutting off randomly but isn't overheating

Hi all,

My wife's Inspiron 1545 from late 2008 is having a new issue wherein it is randomly shutting off but not due to heat.  The computer will shut off when not connected to AC power randomly.  Sometimes it will last 10 minutes, other time 40.  What's odd the is computer reads anywhere from 50% - 85% battery life left.

I'm certain it's not overheating because it doesn't get hot.  Also,I disassembled rear cover and reset the CPU cooler with new thermal paste as a precaution yet the problem persists.

I ran the boot hardware diagnostic test all the way through with no errors.  The harddrive has no audible clicking/crunching which usually indicates an HDD headed south.

I'm pretty handy with computers and am stumped.  I also ran a number of malware and anti virus scans and the computer itself is up to date as per Dell's own support wizard.  Naturally, the Windows Vista Home Premium is up to date as well.

Any thoughts?

1. Is there a difference between a Factory Re-install Disk and a Rescue Disk?

2. I bought a 16 GB USB Flash drive for my Factory Re-install Disk. It only used up 8.2 GB and now I have almost 8 GB unused. Can I use that other 8 GB for something else, or should I just use the USB only for the Factory Re-install disk?
3. What is the difference between the Factory Re-install disk and a Factory Back up? Do I need a factory Back up if I already have a Factory Re-install disk?
4. The Factory Back up requires a separate USB flash drive of at least 7 GB, and the Drivers, Utilities & Application Media require another separate USB flash drive of at least 2 GB. So, and I to understand that I will need Three USB FLASH DRIVES: 1. Factory Re-install Disk (already have); 2. Factory Back up (need one See Question 3); and 3. Drivers, Utilities, and Application Media?
Thank you for your time and effort in answering my questions.

Help with RESETTING Inspiron 15 model 3542 win8.1

I need help figuring out the correct steps to RESET this laptop, NOT refresh and which MS updates to install in correct order to avoid any errors.  This laptop came out of the box with updates till september 2014.  However after the out-of-the-box initial setup I noticed in the administration log files that the machine had several errors already listed.

Problem 1.  Bluetooth

First it said the bluetooth was not working correctly and said that it might not work correctly with bluetooth keyboard or mouse.    I noticed under "services" in the admin logs that bluetooth already had an account and password associated with it.  HMMMMM   is this normal and is that why the blue tooth seems not to be functioning?  If  I want to tether my android phone to this bluetooth, must I know this password that is already assigned to the bluetooth device on the laptop account?

Problem 2.  Chipset driver update

Is it necessary to update hardware drivers after a reset IMMEDIATELY before updating ms updates?  I read that if you do a full reinstall with an oem disc then the chipset needs installed immediately.  Is this so for a reset also?  Any other drivers need updated immediately before ms updates or can I wait till after fully updating all the 65 microsft updates to then install dell updated drivers?  I know this website says that ms updates first THEN MS updates but that seems wrong in light of error event logs right out of box.

Problems 3.  Dell updates, Microsoft updater,MS updates. What correct order to install of all updates?

Looks like the order in which to reinstall all microsoft updatesand Dell updates is important.  As I said before, this computer has all updates till mid september 2014 right out of the box.  The key update for 8.1 is already installed KB2919355.  However,  when going to the MS update website it REOFFERS KB2919355 again.  Seems like you need to reinstall AGAIN to get some additional updates that weren't offered the first time (march 2014) it was installed. SO is KB2919355 the very FIRST thing I should install right out of box or ? HELP  Looks like KB2975061 is required also because 2919355 causes problems like bitlocker open handle creating files that CAN'T i repeat CAN'T be deleted even in a reset.  So...What order of ms updates do you recomend?    Should I install KB 2975061 and then reset?  Then 1st thing do KB2919355 then ?  Evidently it updates and adds some small package of x86 files not included in the v1 rollout of 8.1 KB2919355.  So V2 of kb2919355 supposedly also is supposed to download kb 2959977 but I don't see that in the listed kb files for the second kb2919355 v2 download.

Problem 4.  Which EUFI module do I have and how can I check it's SHA256 hash?  Don't know what KB update to download from MS updates if I don't know this and it OFFERS KB2920189 and KB2961908 which deal with this so I need to know if I can ignore and hide these updates.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/2962824.aspx

Problem 5.    BITS in DLL  "C:\windows\system32\bitsperf.dll"  failed.   Error code 1008.

Do I need to put the bits server in automatic as apposed to manual?  I have my MS updates set to notify of updates but not to download or install them.  Seems like the KB2919355 8.1 v2 reinstall puts KB2959977 in the package that I can't find but supposedly this solves it BUT.  I already have reinstalled it (kb2919355v2) and i still get these errors.  So the bits service seems to be wrong somehow.  I don't want to put the ms updater on AUTO because it will download a bunch of unwanted rollups like KB3000850 nov rollup that is plagued with problems.  So, how should I resolve this persistent bits perf error if ms own updates don't fix it?

Problem 7.   I have an invisible process in my task manager.

Says N/A.   I can disable it but I don't know what it is.  My guess is it has something to do with dell software or cyberlink.  Does anyone else have this suspicous thing in theire task manager settings for startup?

Hope somebody can help that has been through this.

Is it possible to set touchpad on Vostro 5470, so the A zone is touchpad only, and B and C zones to be used as left and right click only? It is very frustrating to use touchpad like this, when whole surface is used as touchpad. It is very imprecise and uncomfortable.

Dell Inspiron 15z (5523) need windows 8/8.1 product key

Hi, My dell Inspiron 15z laptop recently not working and I went to nearest Dell service canter in Kolkata.

They have replaced my laptop's motherboard and installed widows 8.

After that they suggested to upgrade the OS and all driver from home. I did that but faced some OS related issue.

I again went to service center and asked them to fix it. this time they found that this is out of warranty and told me they can't check my laptop without the payment.

On my multiple request they re-installed windows 8.1 without any product key.

Now I don't know what was my original windows product key, They were claiming that they had given the product key after Mother board replacement.

Please suggest how I can get my windows 8/8.1 poduct key that is embedded with my laptop's motherboard.

This should be provided by Dell.

Please help.

How to restore to factory settings?

Hello,

my computer is a

Inspiron 14R (N4010, Early 2010)

Service Tag: <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> | Express Service Code: <ADMIN NOTE: Express service code removed per privacy policy>

MS Windows 7    64 bit

With some help I got rid of multiple malware problems, but I still don't have sound when going to youtube e.g., as well as can't install anything since there is an issue too, which I could not solve, even with help. Therefore I think the best thing to do is to reset the computer to factory settings.

Could somebody please tell me how to do it or give me a link that would give me instructions?

Many thanks, Sven

DELL XPS 15 (L521x) Motherboard Replacement

$

Hi Guys,

I recently had a DELL XPS 15 (L521x) Laptop come into my possession having the dreaded one beep of death. It required a new mainboard; running Windows 8.

The mainboard has now been replaced; and mSATA and SATA HDD's from the previous unit placed back into the new mainboard. I can't seem get the HDD's to boot normally from BIOS; It skips to the network options with PXE:0M codes. I can boot into Dell Diangostics and that shows both mSATA and SATA drives are recognised by the board. If I boot into the Windows Boot Manager, I am able to get into the OS and it appears to behave like it did before.

Am I missing something really basic here or do I need to reinstall OS to mSATA or something on those lines?

Thanks in advance

Dell XPS L321X - connect 2 external monitors?

Is it possible to connect two external monitors to the Dell XPS L321X?  If yes, how is it done?

Yes This once again is the same situation! Wow

Yes I have the same situation. I just hope this will help someone out. I too have a m1730 laptop bought it in 2008. Again wanting like everyone here a laptop to play those high streaming games. Well dell as a company or ceo well what can I say! These people are very smart. They knew us gamers were going to pay big bucks for a computer! That we thought was going to last. So in doing so they put out a video card that we would have to replace ever two to three years. And when I say going to last dell was a very good company at one time. There customer support was 2nd to none. This like all power housed companys. Well it went to there heads. Well enough of my venting getting to the point. I will explain my problems and like all of you I don't have any solutions just a paper wait laptop. Well it all started back in 2008. Bought a xps m1730 laptop from dell. Back in those days they were higher.I payied 3500.00 for mine. In 2009 I started having problems. It was under warrenty thank god. They came out switched out the motherboard. This was a temporary fix in that later not long after it started having more problems. Cant remember what the problem was but I figured it was the power supply. Bought  a new one and presto it worked. In 2011 started having more problems. This is when I found out dell had a class action lawsuit against them. Well I filled out all papers and sent my laptop to dell. When I got it back it was fixed but I noticed when it booted up there were lines before windows booted up. I thought this didn't look right but well what could I do. Well in 2013 my power cord failed again. This time though it was cheaper. I called dell though just to voice my displeasure. In 2014 started having problems with the second video card. I also heard of the trick putting the video card in the oven. Mine worked but when I turned the computer off it would stop so I wasn't going to go that route. I decided to purchase a video card online from amazon. This was suppost to be new but you know how that goes. Make a long story short it had lines and started acting up on me. So I returned it to amazon. Yes amazon love that online store. If you don't shop there you are missing out my friend. They know the true word of customer satisfaction. Well anyway called dell and was going to ask them this simply question? Is there a video card out there that I can buy that will replace my old one without having the issuies of this heat shrink problem? Because you all know if iam going to spend 200 to 300 every 2 to 3 years on a video card! Well it is a paper wait. Why! Way too much money! Well needless to say they hung up on me twice. First put me to sales they said they didn't sell the vedio cards. Then put me to tech support they said I would have to speak to sales. So nobody at dell could or would  answer the question! Tech support told me that the 8800m cards wouldn't have this same problem. But I know this is a lie and they were just wanting me to buy another piece of *** video card. So I will just throw out this! There is no video card out there for the infected dell machines. There! If someone doesn't like that they can answer my simply question? And here it is? Is there a vedio card out there that doesn't have these issues. And when I say that I mean these video cards with the heat shrink issues. And please keep this in mind for the ones that bought a video card on ebay these might be from people that have started to have these problems with there's. Just beware because they are all refurbished video cards. Hope this helps some. I know it doesn't help are situation. But its life! And we learn from it every day god bless

touchpad problem on Inspiron 8600

Hello,

I replaced Windows XP by Windows 7 SP1 (32 bit) on a DELL Inspiron 8600, but unfortunately I lost touchpad, which no longer works ... All the drivers of this laptop are designed to run in XP.

The keyboard works well, but the touchpad and its buttons are not responding at all. However, it is possible to use an infrared mouse by connecting the receiver to a USB port.

The touchpad is hidden in the W7 device manager, but also carries a yellow exclamation mark.

I tried to download the latest drivers Alps (and other drivers), but the touchpad is still not working ...

Have you any idea to enable the touchpad working again?

Here are the features of the notebook (if you need more information, I would indicate to you):

Dell Inspiron 8600 Series

Service Tag: <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>

Pentium M 1.7 GHz / 600 MHz
Video controller: ATI Radeon 9600 Series
BIOS: A14
Pointing device: Touch Pad - PS / 2 Mouse
OS: Windows 7 (32-bit) SP1

I think many persons have managed the transition to W7 on this laptop, and the touchpad is working without encountering any problem (but how?)

Thank you in advance for your help.

Inspiron 3520 laptop issues - beeping

Have Inspiron 3520 with W8 - daughter has infected it via Minecraft update.  Original issue was dark screen and beeping, 8 at a time.  Put on a external monitor and am going through the long process of digging out the bugs with anti-virus and malware removal programs.

Question is this - how can I stop the infernal beeping?  It starts up if I insert the power cord or disconnect/connect the external monitor.  Is there any way to silence it?

Thanks in advance!!

So, I got this laptop in perfect condition from my brother. It worked just fine playing games such as Team Fortress 2 on it the first day. The charger did have a wall socket problem where you had to jiggle it around a bit to get it working. The next day I fished out for the same type of charger and checked if the voltage for the newer charger will work with the laptop and it did. So I used to for quite a bit then while playing a game; it shut off. The charger also turned off. It gave me the error M1004. It done that a few times then I was fed up.

I got the old charger and replaced the plug and it worked fine. Then the same thing happened. I opened the computer up and cleaned some dust out. I tried playing Team Fortress 2. Same thing happened. I just need a bit of help with this. My computer skills can't help me with this now so far.

*Side Notes
