Studio 1458 heatsink help.

My warranty expired. The laptop was overheating. So I searched on the internet and one possible solution was to replace the thermal compound. I am on the process of doing it. However, I realized that the heatsink was also in contact with 5 other parts of the motherboard. 5 of them via a green color pad and 1 via a gray color pad. My questions are:

Are the green pads thermal pads (they seem more for cushion) ? If not, what are the green pads? I must know because one was damaged and I need to replace it too.

Is the gray pad a thermal pad? Can I use thermal compound instead?

Is there a specific thickness of the pads for the studio 1458? Or they are all generic?

Thanks!

network controller driver issue.

Good day

i recently purchased a Dell Inspiron N4050 32bit laptop from a collegue of mine, Lets call the system "Black"

Black is a windows7 OS, i had to clean it up for a fresh start, so black went with mi  to the IT dept @ my workplace, spoke with a friend there, who decided to format and reinstall the OS win7, i was like OK, that'll be fine, please do.

after 4 days, Black came back to mi, that was where i notice the VGA was blurry, that meant black's treatment wasn't thorough. also, it wouldnt pick up the wifi, infact, the wifi dont work no more.

so i checked out my device manager where i found the Standard VGA and network controller had the yellow exclamation icon tagged. i knew i had to get the proper drivers ti fix it.

upon my internet search for drivers, i got the VGA fixed but the network controller wont bend. i stumbled upon the dell forum where an individual had an issue relating with my, he was given some instructions, which he followed, and his system worked, i read the posts between these folks, i was so hapi that i was gonna get black fix, i followed all the instructns given, but still, NOTHING.

pls, what should i do? the problem i have now is with Network controller, please help

Thanks

Hi. I own a Dell Inspiron n5110, intel(R) core (TM) i5-2430M CPU @ 2.4 Ghz
memory. 4gb, HDD-
western digital WDC 640GB running on windows 7 ultimate. I happened to install partition magic last week and just before installation, i got a prompt Message telling me about that software was not compatible. I ignored it and continued with the installation. It Finished, But i didn't run The program though immediately after it brought some prompts about drive errors on my partitions and i allowed them to be fixed by the software. Later on i restarted the machine but restart was unsuccessful. I've been ending up on the BSOD displaying the code:0x0000007b (0x80786B58, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) . I have tried reading about How to resolve the issue but to No success. I have run The diagnostics and The hard drive passed The test. I have tried running recovery and restore points But they also give me error messages. also all attempts at reinstalling the OS have ended at the recurrent BSOD. Please advise on How to proceed So as to use my machine again. Thank you

Dell XPS14z Touchpad driver

Hello,

The touchpad is jumpy and imprecise and I'd like to install the driver for it.

I downloaded and installed Input_Driver_J8J50_WN_18.0.0.3_A06.EXE, based on instructions in another post.

The driver appears to have installed correctly, but there is no "touchpad" tab in the mouse settings dialog. I restarted the computer a couple of times, and tried running the driver installation again.

If I open the device manager, the only entry under "Mice and other pointing devices" is "PS/2 compatible mouse"

Can someone help me get the driver installed correctly so that I can adjust my touchpad settings?

Thank you,

witt

I have a XPS 12 Ultrabook. Recently the icons, taskbar, etc have started flashing. When this happens I can't do anything as it won't allow it. It makes it useless as you cannot click on anything to open or use it. It's very frustrating as I use this for writing and editing photos. Why is it flickering and rendering it useless?

Dell Inspiron 17R 5720Windows 7 won't boot

It powers up.  Goes to the Dell splash screen and stops there.  Bottom right corner I believe says press F2 for setup or F12 for something else.  No matter what F Key I try, the system is unresponsive.  I can't get into safemode or setup to change the boot sequence to try the cd for the re-install cd.

I put a new hard drive in and it does the same exact thing.  Not sure where to go from here.  It's just out of warranty and is only about a year old.

Dell XPS L502x battery caught fire

Hello,

My laptop battery caught fire today while laptop was working. The battery is the original 9-cell battery that came with the laptop and it was holding charge very well. Laptop was working OK until I pulled out the battery while it was burning, it has now battery chamber burnt and I haven't tried to turn it on again (but I believe it might work). We were lucky that we were at home and managed to extinguish the fire quickly.

I have bought it in October 2011 and it is out of warranty now but is it Dell's responsibility to repair the laptop or I have to pay for it myself?

Regards,

Andrzej Kielczykowski

Dell Inspiron 15z Ultrabook

Whenever I press the question mark key the computer acts as if I pressed windows+P, which opens up a dialog to project to a different screen.  I did a refresh, uninstalled the keyboard driver and still does the same thing.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Does the HDMI port in m4800 laptop support HDMI 1.4 spec?

$

I tried connecting a TV screen that supports 3840x2160 @ 30 Hz through HDMI, but m4800 just detects it as a DVI monitor and offers a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz in display settings. The same screen works just fine on XPS15 laptop.

Does the HDMI port in m4800 support HDMI 1.4 spec at all, and if yes, how can I force it to detect the screen properly? (Note that when connected to XPS15, the screen itself shows it's connected as HDMI, whereas with m4800 it shows being connected as DVI).

Using the DisplayPort connector with an adapter is not an option since that port is already in use.

M4300 totally dead except battery light

I know this is an old machine, but it worked perfectly several months ago.  Since then it has been stored in its case. Plugged it in with its AC adapter and the little green battery light blinks.  (Manual says that means battery is almost fully charged.)  Pressing the POWER button does absolutely nothing--no response of any kind from the computer.

We have a second AC adapter; no change when we try that.

Because it was easy, we bought another battery and plugged that in; charged it several hours (green light blinks); still no response whatsoever to pressing the POWER button.

Any suggestions?  I don't mind opening the thing up if I know what I'm looking for.  (There's a little button battery in there, but I don't think it would cause the machine to go completely dead.)

Latitude E6330 Fan Noise (MUCH louder than E4310)

Hi all,

I just received a Latitude E6330 as a warranty replacement for an old E4310 that has died.  While I'm very happy for the upgrade, unfortunately the system's fan noise is driving me *crazy*.  After a full 4 years with the E4310 I never once noticed the fan, but after just two days with this system I'm finding myself putting in headphones with a white noise generator just to be able to concentrate.

More concretely, the issue seems to come down to two factors:

1) The fan motor itself.  While the old system basically just sounded like “airflow” – a faint white noise, not much more intense than the sound of the spinning Hard Drive platters – the E6330 has a very distinct electronic buzz that that's extremely noticeable in a quiet environment.  Here's a video example of this: the first system is the E4310 (faint blowing), the 2nd is the E6330 (blowing AND electronic buzzing): https://www.dropbox.com/s/snv5toxt969nzct/Dell%20Fan%20Noise.MOV?dl=0.

2) How the system manages fan speed.  As far as I can tell, it seems to set RPM based solely on instantaneous CPU usage, rather than temperature – i.e. if I’m programming, each time I begin to compile it ramps up, then the second the compile finishes it ramps back down.  Every time I launch a program it ramps up, then back down.  Here’s an example graph showing the fan’s speed over time (from SpeedFan utility): http://screencast.com/t/urHkl6GnQv, and again a video where you can hear the very noisy spikes and drops: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7qy3fsvzqc2ldyl/Dell%20Fan%20Noise%202.MOV?dl=0.  What I did to cause this is compile a small application over & over; each time a compile begins CPU usage goes up and it blasts the fan, then shuts off immediately when it finishes.  Seems very unnecessary.

Of these two issues, the first is significantly more problematic - though obviously a hardware issue.  Google Images seems to reveal that the E4310 and E6330 fans are not interchangeable, so I'm guessing I can't just swap them and continue using the old, MUCH-quieter E4310 fan.  So I guess my first question (after "has anyone else experienced this issue?") is, is there some sort of 3rd party replacement fan I could swap in that wouldn't be so offensively loud?  I never thought I'd find myself wishing for an older computer, but with this constant buzzing I really just can't focus at times :(

As for the second (behavior) issue, this seems like it might be more solvable on my end; I've already Googled quite a bit for solutions & tried a fair handful, but before putting TOO much time in I wanted to ping the community about the first.  If the fan itself weren't so loud I doubt its behavior would bother me nearly as much.  Honestly, I never once even noticed it on the old E4310...

Thanks in advance for your thoughts :)

Have the Latitude E6520.  am needing to have bluetooth functionality for a scanner.  I do not see in my device directory if I have the correct adapter in my laptop.  Have been unable to download the wireless bluetooth 375 driver, it fails.  Don't these laptops typically come with the correct adapter for bluetooth?  Can you tell me some things I can look for?

Power up issue - Dell Inspiron 1545

Hi

This is a late 2008 build Dell Inspiron 1545, sold retail in December 2010.

Pentium dual core T4500, 2.3 GHz

Has been in irregular use as a spare machine, mains adapter only, battery  removed.  My house was struck by lightning over a year ago and adapter damaged.  Replaced adapter and no further issue until now.

Laptop would not power up, no light.  Tested adapter and tried another 2 adapters - still no power up.  Replaced original adapter and plugged in depleted battery - powered up but had to press F1.  Powered up with no issue with good battery.  Once powered up the laptop seems to be charging battery OK.  Guessed this was a power board issue but no change when replacement fitted.

Can only think that the problem must be motherboard related - can anyone confirm please.
