I was watching a dvd using a headphone earpiece, this is to prevent backlash from neighbours, when I had to made a call of nature. I removed the ear piece and placed it over the top of the monitor. When I returned I attempted to pick up the ear piece and found that it was magnetically attached to the lid near to the microphone point. It was easy enough to remove by I am now wondering if this in normal.

Plugged in not charging

$

My laptop has had the plugged in not charging issue for a few weeks intermittently. It started when my battery said that it had errors.

I ordered a new battery as my computer is a few years old, and it had been decreasing in battery life, hoping that the plugged in not charging message would disappear with the new battery. Unfortunately this was not the case.

My computer could run while plugged in, however wouldn't charge the battery. This wasn't idle, but was okay. This changed however when the computer stopped recognizing that it was even plugged in.

To trouble shot, I plugged it in with a different power cord and for a week the problem ceased. Now however, the error message has returned and the battery will only charge directly after following these steps from http://jeffreypalermo.com/blog/plugged-in-not-charging-windows-7-solution/:

  1. Disconnect AC
  2. Shutdown
  3. Remove battery
  4. Connect AC
  5. Startup
  6. Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Batterylistings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1).
  7. Shutdown
  8. Disconnect AC
  9. Insert battery
  10. Connect AC
  11. Startup

If after these steps I unplug the computer, the battery will not charge if reconnected.

Any suggestions as to what it wrong and how to fix it or other steps to take to determine this?

Thanks for your help.

Dell Latitude D620 Will Not Post/Boot/Start! Orange solid battery light when power is pressed. Help Please!?

I have a Dell Latitude D620 Laptop. About a month ago, it was given to me by my father and he said it just needs rebuilt. He’s used it for a while and it’s never had any issues prior. The battery in it was indeed bad, but it worked fine while plugged in. I rebuilt the operating system, installed all the drivers, rebooted several times during the process. Once i was finished, i had a spare D620 battery laying around that i wasn't sure was good or not. I decided to take out the known bad one, put in this other one and see if its good. Upon swapping, i plugged in the power, and nothing happened when i hit the power button. No lights, nothing. So I took it out, put in the known bad battery, and hit power again.... now nothing comes on even with the battery that just allowed it to boot 2 minutes prior... I have reseated the ram, tried with no battery, different charger and still nothing. It sat for about a month now as I was frustrated with it. Today, I found a battery module for the D620 that sits in the CD-ROM bay. I installed it, and now when plugged in and I hit the power button, the battery light came on as orange, not flashing, just solid. When I let go of the power button it goes off. As long as the power button is held in, it stays on. Any idea’s what is wrong? I can’t seem to find any clues

Hi, Can you use the power supply that came with the laptop through the docking station? Instead of the power supply that came with the docking station itself? From what I can see in most cases the power supply that comes wih the docking station is a bit more powerful.

Recently took delivery of a Latitude 6430u.

Upgraded the 64GB SSD to 256GB.

Used an external CDROM and the Win 7 64bit restore CD to restore the system.

Followed the guide to re-image, etc. Installed everything in exactly the right order.

I still have a yellow triangle for "PCI Simple Communications Controller"

I have installed the chipset drivers and they installed successfully.

Any ideas?

Dell Inspiron N4020 Black Screen on Startup

$

Upon powering up the computer, the light on front comes on, the CD/DVD drive runs, I can feel the HD turning, but the display remains black, no display at all.  After a some seconds, the computer beeps 4 times, hesitates, and beeps 4 times and continues this pattern until I turn off the power.  I put an UBUNTU live CD into the CD/DVD drive, and the sequence repeats as before.   I remove the disk from the CD/DVD drive, and repeat:  same thing.

Some months ago, I salvaged the original HD from this computer due to it failing.  I retrieved some priceless photos my niece took in Afghanistan, and I replaced the HD with an approved new one.  I also added RAM to max out the motherboard.  I installed UBUNTU Studio on the new HD, gave it to my daughter, and the computer has performed flawlessly for almost a year.  Two days ago, lines started appearing on the display, according to my daughter, and yesterday it ended up in the state I described above.

What are the steps to repairing the computer?  I have more than average knowledge with computers, have repaired, upgraded, and built some systems, but I hardly call myself a technician.  So, instructions suitable to a layman are encouraged.  Thanks.

Dell inspiron M5110 graphics card / screen problem

Hi,

I have a "one year and 2 months old" Dell Inspiron M5110 (A4-3305M /4GB/500GB/HD 6510/15.6"). A couple of days ago, while watching a video, the image on the screen got distorted and then the screen turned black.

Since then the laptop has a completely chaotic behaviour and therefore can not be used anymore. From time to time, I get 8 beeps at start-up. Sometimes the laptop starts properly and the screen shows the correct image, and most of the time the screen just remains black while the laptop is powered.

I tried to hook up an external monitor but I only get an image from time to time.

As the laptop is no longer under warranty, I disassembled it completely to check the LCD cable connection which seems OK.

Based on all the posts in this forum, it seems that, at least, the graphics card is faulty but the LCD is not. Is my reasoning correct ?

Solutions ? if I change the motherboard it should solve the problem right ?

If I have to change the motherboard, I would like to try, before throwing away the old one, to do a graphics card reflow. Any suggestions ? (temperature, time...)

Thanks

Hard Drive issues in N5050

I bought my laptop in April of 2012. It has been a little over a year since I had it and I've had to have the hard drive replaced TWICE. It seems like every 6 months I need a new one. Today I turned my laptop on and it gave me the same screen as all the other times the hard drive has failed. I do not have the money to replace the laptop or the hard drive and my computer is now out of warrenty. I really need my computer since I work from home. I know its the hard drive again because I pressed the f12 button on start up and it ran the system assessment and there is no check mark next to hard drive. It is also detected I ran that test too. What should I do?

Dell Inspiron 17R-SE Not Powering On

$

I've had my 17R-SE for a few months and used it probably every day. This weekend I went away and got back today after two days away to realize that I had forgotten to unplug the charger from the wall, but didn't think it could cause any problems. So I powered it up as usual and after about five minutes, connected my phone via USB to charge/copy pictures over. The next time I looked at the laptop, the screen was back-lit but there was nothing on it and it was not responding to anything apart from when I opened and closed the disk drive, it made a 'reading disk' sound for about a second. I held down the power button until it was off.

When I tried to power it up again nothing would happen. There was no LED light to even indicate that it was charging. I connected my camera (not the phone) via USB and it was receiving power from the laptop and charging despite the laptop not responding to anything else. After looking online I tried taking out the battery and holding down the power button to 'release static.'

After this, when I plugged the charger back in, the LED to indicate charging lit up again. When I pressed the power button, the hard drive LED flashed for about a second and then nothing.

~

When I take out the battery and then try powering on again, the hard drive LED will flash for a second but then nothing else. If I press the power button again without taking out the battery and putting it in again the hard drive LED doesn't even light up for that second.

There's obviously power and it's charging but I have no idea what to try. When I entered my warranty code it said it had ran out last month. Obviously I'm very sad that this has happened to such an expensive laptop (for me) and after having it for such a short time. I don't have the money to send it anywhere without the warranty.

Not sure whether this has happened because of the charger being left in (never had a problem with leaving the charger in before, although I know you shouldn't do it) or the phone being connected. I think the phone was probably what caused it, although I have connected my phone before.

Any advice/help would be very much appreciated.
