Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 + Intel 6230 wifi + TP-Link router 40MHz channel width issues

$

In my parents's house there are two TP-Link access points and there are multiple devices using them without problems. However my Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop with upgraded dual-band Intel Centrino 6230 wifi card occasionally is having issues in form of very low or unstable bandwidth, high latency if network is set to 40 MHz channel width. I haven't observed slower-than-expected Intel adapter performance when using other wifi networks/access points, that would indicate issues with TP-Link router firmware, also all the other devices at parents house have no issues(Windows, Mac laptops, multiple Android tablets and phones). There fore I am leaning to think it is a Intel driver issue.

Routers (with latest firmware) positioned to receive sufficient cooling:

TL-WR842ND - hardware 1.0 - firmware 3.12.25 Build 130322 Rel.33803n -  channel 1
TL-WR841N - hardware 8.4 - firmware 3.15.9 Build 140724 Rel.63227n - channel 11

Problematic pc - Dell Inspiron 15R 5110 with Intel 6230 wifi, Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Wifi driver 15.11.0.7 (updated to most reacent in attempt to fix issues)
Other test pc - Dell Inspiron 15 3521 with Dell 1705 wifi, Windows 8.1 x64

I experience issues even when I am located few meters from the router without no obstacles. There is very little interference from other networks, there are two which are barely detectable from neighboring houses. If the access points are set to 20 MHz channel width, the wifi connection with my PC is reasonable, however, generally still about 2x slower than on other devices.

The configuration of my laptop hasn't changed for about 2 years with biggest change being upgrade from Win 8 to 8.1. But the issues described above I started to experience for the first time in August 2014 when visited parents and thought my wifi adapter is going bad. However, afterwards it worked fine in all other networks. During the visit in January 2014 I did not experience issues like that, that suggests an issue in wifi adapter drivers that have likely been introduced since then. Now I am visiting parents again and experiencing the same issues and have identified that at least a partial solution is to switch to 20 MHz channel width.

What have tried:
- Update PC adapter and Wifi router drivers and firmware
- Change access point channels
- Set PC Wifi adapter transmit power to High both in Power Settings and Adapter Settings
- Disallow Windows to turn off adapter to save power
- Disable Wireless Multi Media (WMM) in access points. It didn't help and in fact causes Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet to be unable to connect.
- Restarting routers - sometimes seemed to improve he connection speed, but it is unclear since it varies between tests and sometimes connection becomes fine without doing anything notable.

I contacted both TP-Link and Intel. TP-Link suggested to contact Intel as the manufacturer of the adapter. Intel is directing me to Dell, saying that there might be manufacturer specific integration quirks that prevent adapter from working correctly.

My warranty has ended a half a year ago, so I cannot contact Dell support. Can there be any specific integration quirks that prevent the adapter from working with these particular access points in 40 MHz mode? Any idea what could be the cause for this?

Intel support also provide links below with optimal settings and possible fixes for common issues. I had done and tried all of that already before contacting Intel.

Inspiron N5110 Display does not start at first boot, able to hear sound but full black display

Hello,

I've dell Inspiron N5110 and I'm using it since past 3 and half years. In 2013, base of the laptop was broken and I had to replace it with a new one though there was no problem in hardware at all. Soon after the dell representative installed the new base and left my house I was facing a weird problem. When I power on the laptop, my screen gives a mild flash but does not start (6 out of 10 times, not always), but I can hear windows start up sound in the back ground. I use to press power button again to lock or stand by the laptop and then move my mouse. After performing this I can see the screen glows and log on screen shows up.

I was using my laptop like this for past 1.5 years as pressing a power button was no big deal. Today on the eve of new year, I saw my trick does not work any more. I was not able to start my screen even after repetitive attempts. But I remember I used it last night, display was really fine.

I need help from this forum, please anyone guide me on what could be the problem and what is the solution.

Can I edit or undo my username profile given in the original set-up?

I asked my brother-in-law to help me set-up my new computer (Inspiron 15R) last year and he thought he was funny by naming it "Paulas Palace/Paula the Great".  Now every time I share a document that I have created with my co-workers, boss, or friends, it shows that it was created by "Paula the Great".  I have not found a way to edit that out in the settings.

Others have said to set up a new user account and then delete the old account.  So far that hasn't been successful.  I'm using the same name, the same email, the same Microsoft password, etc.  But now I do have two user accounts yet the new one does not show any of the programs such as Microsoft office, spyware, software etc.  I can't imagine how difficult this might be to figure out how to reload all of that, locating all the product keys, etc. transferring all my files and settings.  Surely there is a simple way to undo the issue he has created.  I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. (I wish I could simply edit out "the Great".....  and "shake" some sense into my crazy brother in law.)

windows 8.1 64 bit

after switching between user accounts, I can move the cursor around on the screen, but I can't click on anything, not left click or right click

after signing out of the problematic user account and signing back in, the pad works normally

I saw a lot of reports on this problem for linux, but none for windows.

this laptop came with ubuntu installed. I personally installed windows 8.1 64 bit, which is supported, and I installed all the latest drivers.

the dell auto-detect can't find any problems.

Vostro 3500 BIOS update

I have a dell vostro 3500 laptop that has had overheating issues. I have had it to bits and cleaned out the fan. Put it back together and it still worked!! I then tried updating the Bios from version 2 to version 12. I have been into the bios to see if there are any helpful settings regarding the overheating but the laptop shut itself down after 30 seconds or so. (Didn't seem to be hot).  NOTE I installed the Dell Vostro system BIOS A12 not the Dell Winery 15 BIOS A10.

I can't boot into safe mode - I get a screen of windows drivers loading and a please wait message at the bottom of the screen. I wait the computer shuts itself down.

If I try to let it boot normally I get a "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" message, if I bypass this I get as far as the windows splash screen and log on password then it shuts down.

Last time I allowed the chdisk to start, it got to 44% (step 2 of 3) having deleted some indexes before it shut down.

Any ideas? - it doesn't seem to be an overheating issue as it has run much hotter in the past? But I only got to 44% by removing the battery and running it from the adapter. With mains power and the battery I only got to 4% before shut down.

I was considering using a live linux CD to get in, but if it shuts down when I'm looking at the Bios settings i.e. before it hits windows I'm not sure that will help?

If I put the hard drive into a usb caddy and attach it to another working (windows 7) computer, can I run chdisk on it? If so how do I do it (it's been a long time since I played around with command line instructions).

Suggestions very welcome - I need to be very clear about what I intend to do if it keeps shutting down less than 2 minutes after starting!!!

My xps suddenly stopped working at exactly midnight.  I tried restarting it and it kept restarting itself on the bios screen.  I suspect a virus in the bios triggered on date change to 1/1/2015?  Is that the case?  If so what do I do to resolve it dell?  I've heard others are having the same issue

Inspiron 1545 Display No bootable device strike f1 to retry boot at every boot

Dear All,

I got an issue with my  laptop Dell Inspiron 1545 from 2009.

My computer got a upgrade in 2009 from Vista to Windows 7

Since few weeks everytimes when the computer boot i got this message:

No boot sector or internal drive

No bootable device strike f1 to retry boot f2 for setup utility

If i press F1 as requested Windows 7 start without any issue. So the computer run without any issue except that the computer is slow as usual.

I tried to troubleshoot using those following stuff :

Run the dell diagnostic with F5 : Result all pass

Run the My pc checkup software from dell on all computer part and full on hard drive : Result all pass.

Updated BIOS A10 to A14 : Result nothing change.

In the BIOS the harddrive is correctly detected

I didn't find anything who can skip this message and force to retry to reboot or boot properly directly.

I only have two guess that the problem could come from :

Harddrive failure but dont display on the actual test so have to change the hardrive or see if it moved a bit inside the laptop and have to push if again ?

CMOS battery die so have to change it ?

Any help would be welcome

Thanks in advance everybody,

Nono

Dual boot advice for Vostro 1720

$

Hi there,

Can anyone please tell me what’s the best way to partition a Dell Vostro 1720 in order to dual boot? I've currently got Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 installed which I purchased with the laptop back in April 2010 as a promotional offer as well as a custom build and upgraded from the original version of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 that came with the laptop using the OS recovery DVD, unfortunately I didn't create a custom recovery disc for the laptop before using the OS recovery DVD in which the recovery partition is still present and want to keep but currently not accessible, I'm still in the process of getting this to work by using a thread I created in the forum last year but haven't had a chance to get it to work using the advice I was given plus I didn't have enough time last year to test this out before the new year in which I will hopefully have time this year. I basically want to dual boot the laptop with both Windows 7 Ultimate x64 that came with the laptop and either Windows 8 Pro x64, Windows 8.1 Pro x64 or Windows 10 Pro x64 once there is an official trial for Windows 10 Pro x64 as the second OS so I can begin testing drivers for the later OSs so I am prepared for the OS migration in April 2020 as Microsoft will stop supporting 7 around this month. Your help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Paul

Inspiron N5050 died suddenly now won't start

Hi all,

I have a 2 year old Inspiron N5050.  Two days ago I was using my computer normally (it was plugged in at the time), when it suddenly died.  Didn't shut down, just went black.  Then it would not turn on again.

LED on AC plug is lit when plugged into wall socket and stays on when plugged into laptop.

I unplugged power cable and removed battery, and held down power button for 30 seconds, then reconnected everything and hit the power button.  The laptop started to boot up for about 3 seconds, then went dead again.

Thanks in advance for support.  Brendan

EDIT: removed the battery and held down power button for 30 seconds a second time, and this time computer started to boot up, I entered my windows password, and then it died again.  Repeated a third time and only made it 4-5 seconds before dying.

EDIT: several more reboots have resulted in windows starting normally, but then the laptop dying after several minutes of normal activity.  Often the keyboard begins to act weird just before the laptop dies (tap one key and different letter appears, etc.)

Re-installing Intel RST

XPS 9530, Windows 8.1, 16gb memory, 1tb HDD, 250gb msata (all drivers are latest rev, this machine is about two weeks old.

I installed a larger msata drive and it's working perfectly.  I'd like to reinstall/reconfigure Intel Rapid * Technology, exactly the way it was on the OEM 32gb msata into its own partition.  I'm using the bigger msata to host a few applications that need SSD speed, and am keeping the 1TB HDD.

I have set the BIOS settings to use Intel Rapid Storage Technology again and everything is great.  What I find is that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology app, when run as Administrator doesn't give me the ability reconfigure the RAID drives the 32gb msata had.  I've also followed Intel's instructions about configuring RST found here:

[View:en.community.dell.com/.../addpost:550:0]

I'm unable to enter the configuration screens as described in this link - which may be due to the fact that the guide was written in 2011.

Are the installation steps Dell used to originally configure the mSATA drive available?

And, I've described this as Intel Rapid * Technology, mainly because I'm not sure if Rapid Start Technology is the same as Rapid Storage Technology.  It feels like Intel Marketing got too involved and decided to name things differently, but I'm not sure.  I do know I want Intel Rapid, the way it was.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Inspiron 13 7347 - Sensors Driver Cannot Start (Code 10) HID Sensor Collection

I replaced HDD with SSD on my new 7347, and then did a clean install of "Windows 8.1 Enterprise N" in order to be able to run Hyper-V virtual systems.  I have applied all Windows 8.1 updates and installed Dell 7347 drivers and updated the BIOS to A03.  All is working except screen auto rotation.  Any ideas?

The Device Manager indicates that  HID Sensor Collection has a driver problem and cannot start as shown below:

Clicking on the HID Sensor Collection shows the unable to start (Code 10) issue:

Any help on how to fix this sensor driver issue?  Is there some other DELL driver I need to install?

I have tried running Windows 8.1 Troubleshooting app and it shows this:

I have also run the DELL Support "System Analysis" option as shown below and it loops on requesting me to install the 7347_Chipset_Driver_NDGM4_WN_9.5.22.1760_A00 driver which I have done multiple times.

I would just like to get screen auto rotation to work.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards

SSD swap

Hi  there,

Was gonna contact support but apparently my warranty expired. I just got a new SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB) to replace the existing stock smaller Samsung SSD that was already in there. The new drive is only about 1/8" smaller than the old length wise one but that's enough to not work together with the caddy. Without it, I can insert the new drive and make it work, but with the caddy, it physically stops before reaching the connectors in the back and doesn't quite make it. Any suggestions on how to make it work with the caddy? Thank you.
