Hello

I am wondering if anyone can help me? When I switch on my laptop, I can hear the noise as if it is running however, cannot see anything. I know it isn't the screen and have a feeling it is the motherboard /graphics card (I use a lot of 3D/graphics software).

Is there any way to fix this? I want it to last me at least another 6-8 months before purchasing a new laptop.

Hope you guys can help!

Many thanks

Inspiron 15 (5545, Mid-2014) Touchpad double click

I just opened my new Inspiron 15 (5545, Mid-2014), and the touchpad occasionally double clicks. When I press the lower left corner, I sometimes get a single click (which is what I'm expecting), but I also sometimes get a double click. If I simply tap the touchpad once, I can get a single click, but I should be able to use the left-click button.

I've checked the Dell Touchpad settings, and I verified that the left button is set to "Click" and not "Double click". I ran the Dell Touchpad test in My Dell, but all it was checking for was whether or not the buttons and touch surface were responsive. It didn't seem to indicate whether the press was a double click or a single click.

Goodbye Dell - XPS 17

I'm writing this post out of my grief and disappointment.

It is a little over 3 years I have been using my XPS 17. Bought it for work to my office in my own company. Having quite some experience in gamedev (10+ years in industry) I have already worked on Dells with luck. No wonder my next choice was Dell as well. I'm a software developer - I need a good laptop. Some of my industry friends and even employees warned me, that Dell is not what it used to be - I ignored it. Bought l702x - now I regret it.

I had constant problems almost from the beginning:

First I had very bad quality LCD, very grainy, I felt cheated. Dell Support replaced it for slightly better one.

Next I had the common issue with falling off power cable. Again, Dell Support replaced it for the cable which still was too thick and too heavy and fallen only twice a day.

After that I have realised that some (if not most) of the internal modems doesn't work with this hardware. I had 2  of them at my office. One of them was Dell branded. Both didn't work. To this day I'm not using modem with this laptop - notice, that there is a SIM card slot inside - brilliant joke.

Speakers - people say it is so cool piece of hardware. Well - I don't get it! The only thing which makes this hardware sound so 'cool' is probably the piece of software delivered with it, which makes it 'sound better'. Without it, in comparsion to other brands it is really bland. Not to mention the speakers placement - right under your palm - great thinking - to hear something during work I need to use headphones or take my hands off the desk.

Later 2 cursor keys lost their plastic coating due to regular basis (though frequent) use.

At this point my battery started to fail - probably falling off cable caused it to malfunction.

Another issue I had was quite common top cover hinge breaking off from the plastic. I had to fix it myself because I needed machine at work. What I have seen there inside made me laugh - small plastic bulbs with 3 screws had to keep all this force - you don't have to be major at physics to notice this one is going to break in probably every model.

Apart from that the main issue - constant overheating. If you work in graphics department - you have a problem, when you work in gamedev department - you have a problem, when you just want to play games - you have a problem. What are temperatures? Around 100 Celsius degrees - this is a temperature of the boiling water. With such a huge case Dell engineers could easily fit there something better.

So that's it. I'm saying goodbye. I'm already looking for another laptop. I will think twice before buying another Dell laptop - well actually I think I won't use anything from Dell any more. That goes to my company, employees, friends and family. I don't want to feel cheated again. Why this post? Well - maybe I have spent 3 years feeling bad and I wanted to share my frustration, maybe someone is considering buying dell and this will help with the choice, maybe you have same hardware and it starting to show its nature but still have a chance of giving it back.

Good bye Dell,

Disappointed user.

Laptop Manufacturing Problem

I purchased a Inspiron 14R5421 17 months ago. Service tag <Admin Note: removed per privacy policy~RK>.    Recently the computer would not turn on.  After intensive inspection at Iowa State University Information Technology Services I received a thorough analysis of the problem from the IT technician.  Here is the exact quote from the lab technician:

"Removed memory and thoroughly looked over the motherboard.  No obvious signs of damage or any trace of liquid found.  The machine sill would not power on from minimal configuration.  I suspect the machine will need a new MLB."

Second inspection quote:

"Inspected machine and found that it was missing one grounding tab.  I found the grounding tab wedged under the heatpipe on the bottom side of the motherboard.  It appears that the board looks burnt where I found the tab.  I removed the tab and attempted to boot with minimum configuration and all possible RAM configurations.  No signs of power."

This was a manufacturing problem of the Dell computer.  I purchased the computer 17 months ago, so the 12 month warranty is expired.  However, I feel as a customer that Dell needs to know that the computer was manufactured incorrectly and had a loose grounding tab that caused a burn out on the motherboard.

As a customer I am not able to ask for a refund past the 12 month warranty, however, your company needs to know that the manufacturing of this computer caused it to burn the motherboard.   A repair to replace the MLB is over $700 which is what I paid for the computer.

I am a very disappointed customer, and your company needs to become aware of its manufacturing problems that cost me over $700 to replace a computer after 17 months.   If you want this computer sent back to you, send me an address.  Maybe you can inspect your own manufacturing problems.

Smart Source dell not working

Hi Everyone,

Recently purchased a dell inspiron 15 5000 and I am a bit frustrated at support. I called in this morning and have been transferred 5 times back and forth because none of them knew how to help me... A product of their own and they did not know. So I am hoping that someone can help me here.

I wanted to access software that came with my laptop but wasn't downloaded and was told to go to my account then to my software section. But the when i click download factory installed software, I get a page that says "web page can't load" I tried it on chrome and internet explorer with no avail.

I then checked to see if the website is down and it is.  Is anyone having issues connecting to the smartsourcedell website? or is it just me? software support was charging me money for them to help me.. when it was their website that wasn't working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Second RAM slot not working (Latitude E6400)

Hello, I have this 4-year old laptop. I bought a Kingston 2GB DDR2 800mhz CL6 PC2-6400 module to install into the second slot (the first one has the stock 2GB RAM module). BIOS didn't recognize it, so I tried to plug the original RAM module from the first slot (A) into the second (B) and the laptop didn't even power on. Then I tried to install the Kingston into the first slot (A) and the laptop did power on and run OK. So it is clear that the second RAM slot is not working properly.

Does it mean that I need to replace the motherboard in order to fix it? Is there any other way this could be fixed (maybe the slot isn't bad, it just needs some setup, maybe cleaning, I don't know)?

Thanks in advance.

Samsung SSD Drive running SATA l instead of SATA ll

Hello,

Never posted to this forum before so bare with me, but I hope you all can help me figure this out as it is driving me crazy. So a few days ago I upgraded my Studio 1735 with a Samsung 850 Pro SSD. I did a fresh install and everything is working fine.  I install my samsung magican software and it gives me the following information.

Here is  the crazy part, when I did some research on my Studio 1735 it should at least have SATA ll ports on the motherboard, even though I could not find anything in actual writing that it has SATA ll ports on the motherboard.  As you see above, my Samsung Magician software says there is a SATA lll port available, but I doubt have any of them on my motherboard due how old my computer is but hey at this point the sky is the limit.  So how can I confirm what version of SATA Ports are installed on my Dell studio 1735 laptop and if the version is in fact ll or lll why is my samsung SSD saying its connected to an SATA l. The service tag of my laptop is FG1Z4H1 if this helps any, even though I could not find the information perhaps I missed something.

Thanks for all your contributions ahead of time

Hi,

I'm trying ubuntu from USB (also tried linux Mint) but I can't boot from the USB, I always get "operating system not found" error.

I tried booting with F12 and choosing USB, tried to change boot order in bios and set USB 1st but nothing helps.

What else can I do ? The usb is bootable so the problem is with the laptop/bios.

Keyboard & Mouse Issue

Good day, I am currently having a issue, with my Dell Inspiron  M5110 Laptop, when I turn it on the keyboard works fine, at the Dell Logo, where it queries me to press F2 or F12 , works well there, but when it reaches the screen where it asks, whether to start in safe mode or normally the keyboard doesn't work there. The same thing occurs with the mouse, I tried going into the Dell ESPA, and it starts checking things, but when it reaches the press y or n if the color bars are displayed, I press the key but it doesn't respond/work. Mouse doesn't work in the ESPA either. Can someone please address me on this issue please. Thanks in advanced!

Hello,
we have a problem of keyboard with many Dell Latitude e3540 .
Some keys randomly stop responding .
We have updated the firmware to version A08 but unable to fix it.
Also reinstall the driver keyboard controller with the same result .
The only thing that can solve the problem was momentarily disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard . Likewise, the problem usually returns .
The local support Dell keyboards we changed several times but the problem persisted.
Someone knows how can be solved ?
Thank you very much ,
greetings .

Hi there, have a user running a Latitude E6430 that has recently begun bluescreening often. Checking out the .dmp file indicates memory issues. When I run a mem test, I get error info as shown below
