driver updates - how to tell which already installed?

I'm confused by Dell's support page, specifically drivers and downloads needed for my computer. How do you tell which ones you really need? The list does not seem to change, even after I install a recommended driver (that driver remains on the list).

Windows 7 Keeps Freezing

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron M5030 laptop. It has developed a problem where Windows keeps freezing. It does not give any warning its going to freeze and I don't get any error messages, I just have to hold the power button down to make the computer reboot (some times when it freezes and I press any key on the keyboard the screen goes black, but doesn't happen often. Also sometimes if I press the F2 key (turns wifi on or off) when the system boots back up it has turned the WIFI off as if the keys are working in the back ground but Windows has froze and you the keys don't do anything to windows and the mouse cursor has gone). The freezing happens at any time including when Windows is just starting up or it could be performing fine for any period of time and then just freezes. I have run the diagnostic using F12 at start up and this didn't show any problems. I have reinstalled Windows 7 and this didn't cure it, it still freezes. Why is it doing this?? Any help would be most welcome. I don't want to have to buy a new laptop.

hi

i think i am asking the same question again but i am doing this just to make sure everything is correct before i go for a ram upgrade. I had bought a dell 14r n4010 in october 2010. Can someone tell me the maximum limit to which the ram can be increased on this laptop. Also I want the specification of the ram which came with this laptop. I have already used cpu-z and it is showing that the D-ram frequency is 533mhz . So does it mean that my ram frequency is 1066mhz since its dual layer..

pls help

thanking u in  advance

I was given this laptop over a year ago as a present but never got round to even open it. It was brand new sealed box.

I tried to turn it on but no lights, no sound, no beeps nothing.

1. I have tried another known working dell charger

2. Tried using another fully charged battery from another similar laptop. The battery code was the same.

3. I have tried to discharge any static by removing all power and holding down power button for 30 seconds.

any  ideas anyone? The laptop has just come out of warranty :(

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545.  The hard drive is failing.  I purchased a new hard drive from Dell last week.  Installed it but keep getting an error stating no hard drive found try resetting the drive.  I've reset the drive several times and no luck.  I know the mother board and connectors are fine because the old drvie will still start up.  Do I need to return the new hard drive a get a new one?

Dell Latitude D505 Won't Start, 3 Lights Next to On Switch Flash

Hello all:

I would sincerely appreciate any expert's help to resolve my problem with my Dell Latitude D505 laptop.  About a week ago, I tried to start my laptop by pressing the on switch and the three lights next to it just flashed on and off quickly (about 3 times per second).  The laptop wouldn't start.  I reseated the RAM boards and the laptop started.  My computer seemed to work just fine, so my software should be okay.  Two days later, the computer wouldn't restart no matter what I tried to do.  My troubleshooting heretofore follows:

1)  I tested the AC adapter.  The LED lights glows bright green, the voltage output is about 19 Vdc.  This is about what the specified output of the adapter should be.  When I try to start the laptop, the flashing lights glow very brightly, so it appears power reaches the computer parts.

2)  I removed the battery.  No difference.

3)  I reseated the RAM boards, I also disconnected and reconnected the following connectors, in case they worked loose:  a) fan, b) keyboard, c) mouse, d) 2 coax antenna for modem, e) speaker, f) On switch, indicator light board.  I also disconnected the heat sink above the processor, which I tightly resecured.  Still no difference.

4) One thing I seem to remember the last time the computer worked is that my fan does not run.  The heat sink did not appear to get hot.  The laptop is at room temperature when I start it, so nothing would overheat.

I don't want to start replacing hardware piece by piece without some confidence it will work.  Any additional tests, ideas?

Can't get native resolution on monitor by using the laptop dock with a Dell Latitude 6430u, Dell Ultrasharp U2913WM and Dell Superspeed 3.0 USB Dock

We recently purchased these three items

  • Dell Latitude 6430u
  • Dell Ultrashsarp U2913WM
  • Dell Superspeed USB 3.0 Dock
Each works fine on its own however - when we connect the monitor to the dock - we never can get it to get the native solution. We tried with HDMI, DVI, HDMI to DVI, DVI to HDMI.
In the end - we resorted to plugging in the monitor directly to the laptop via the VGA port. When we tried to connect the monitor directly to the HDMI port on the laptop that also did not give us the native resolution.
Our issue is two things
  • If we have a dock - we want to use it as such - without needing to plug in the monitor directly to the laptop - rather - plug it right into the dock
  • If we have a nice monitor - we want to get the best display possible - DVI or HDMI would be great and is not much to ask - right now we have to use VGA
We updated all drivers for everything - this is a clean machine fresh install with the latest and greats from Dell support. But still no DICE!
Suggestions?

Laptop Inspiron 1764 - White Screen

Hello,

I have an Inspiron 1764 laptop that is about 3 years old.  I am suddenly having issues with a white screen appearing in the middle of working on the laptop.  I am not able to recover other than a hard shut down which of course tends to corrupt some of my Windows files.   I have looked at the other posting on this but there seems to be no resolution from Dell.  Does anyone know of a resolution for this problem?

Thanks!

Dell Vostro 3560 Hard Drive Cannot Be Detected When Booting Into Windows 8 DVD

$

I bought a Dell Vostro 3560 laptop 2 days ago, it came with Windows 7 Home Premium, now, I have a Windows 8 DVD and put it into the drive. I booted from the DVD, and somehow, when I select "Custom Install", the setup generates an error message indicating that no hard drive can be found (how does that happen when I can boot into Windows 7 perfectly?). I ended up booting into Windows 7 and ran the setup.exe of the Windows 8 DVD and did an in-place upgrade, but the key question remains:

What am I supposed to do, should this computer fail to boot to its Operating System?

I am asking here because, in the event that this computer's Operating System becomes corrupt, or catches a virus, and needs a reformat, what should I do? In the old days, I used to boot from installation media and format the hard drive, then "clean install" any given OS. Now, since the Windows Setup fails to detect a hard drive, does that mean it is not possible to repair a broken installation of Windows? Also, does that mean that I cannot dual boot another OS?

I am really worried, because I used to be able to fix any software-level error or infection by reformatting and reinstalling OSes, is the driver of the 1TB HDD needed in order for the Setup program to detect the drive? Also, if I were to install a Linux or BSD OS, I think the drivers are not the same? It is for certain beyond my ability to write a driver for any hardware device, at least for the next 5 years...by then, this laptop will no longer be in use...so, experienced users, please, help me solve this "hard drive undetectable" error!!

Inspiron 17R 5720 blank screen at startup

I am now part of the "extensive" club which is having major issues with my Inspiron 17R 5720 laptop. It crashed last night and will not boot properly. I have read numerous identical posts which, unfortunately, no solution has been given. My computer was purchased 20 November 2012 (stull under warranty). Of course, it did not come with an operating system (Windows 8)  64 bit disk......not that this would be useful since a cd/dvd is not part of the current boot sequence. There is no way for me to enter into a diagnostic mode. My F2 and F12 keys do function.........but  nothing useful has come of this:(  I am open to any suggestions.......other than powering down with the Start button, removing battery, reseating RAM chips.....have also tried connecting HDMI cable to an exterior monitor (does not work). When clicking F12, I am not even given the option for "diagnostics."
