I have 1 USB-2 port and 2 USB-3 ports on my Dell Inspiron i7 machine.  My 2 USB-3 ports have stopped working.  Any ideas how to get them back on line?  I have uninstalled the drivers and had the machine reinstall them at boot-up.

Clearing Notebook & Desktop BIOS Passwords

$

What is a BIOS Password?

BIOS level passwords are designed to be the first line of defense against unauthorized access to a system. If set, a user will be required to enter a password before a system has even begun entering Windows. While passwords at this level can provide excellent security benefits, it’s not as straight forward to reset as other passwords may be if they are forgotten.

How to Unlock

Depending on your systems model, unlocking can be performed through several different means. Many Dell Desktops and older notebook systems can have BIOS passwords reset by removing CMOS batteries and adjusting password jumpers (see Article ID: 600157 & Article ID: 52016 below) while modern notebooks and tablet systems will require you contact Dell Technical Support for a ‘Master password’ to be generated.

If contacting support for a master password you will be required to verify your ownership of the system before a password can be generated. Due to the value Dell places on our customers' privacy and security, Dell will not provide a BIOS or hard drive password unless ownership of the system has been properly verified. To make the process as simple as possible have as much of the following information available as possible before contacting support:

·         First and Last Name on the Account

·         Company Name (if applicable)

·         Phone Number (including area code)

·         Street Address, City , State and ZIP

·         Email Address

Transferring Ownership

If your system was purchased recently or the original account information does is not up to date with your details you can request Dell update the systems records by completing an ‘Ownership Transfer’ form. Details of the process and full instructions can be found at the following address: http://www.dell.com/support/retail/us/en/19/ownershiptransfer/IdentifySystem

BSOD - STOP 0x7E . cng sys error. HELP!!!

i've got an inspiron 1750 running win 7 home premium. Couple days ago small tasks started freezing and not responding and yesterday i got bsod. I only had one chrome tab open at the time, nothing else. I've tried every selection on the f8 menu. computer gets bsod with all variations of safe mode and last known config. Tried removing the power cable + battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds. I've attempted to launch startup repair from the laptop and also from a cd I made prior to this. Both i've left for multiple hours yet they stay on the blue windows background with a movable curser. the disk i made previously shows the drop down menu for language but when i click next I get the windows background and curser.

Internal HDD is 1tb, partitioned 7:3. The bigger partition is where windows is installed and the smaller partition has a system image and backup on it from a recent point. If only I could reach the startup repair menu, i'd be able to select restore from previous point, and then select the system restore point in the smaller partition of the hdd. HOWEVER, I can't get that far.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get to the startup repair menu?? As I said before, all variations of safe mode fail so command prompt isn't an option. The primary partition is only a quater full.

Thanks very much for your help in advance.

Wrong polarity damage to laptop

Hi, I got an Dell XPS L502x i5 laptop, it was running fine till yesterday i decided to use it at my friends place. when the battery was close to finish i decided to plug in my charger into the electric socket. within seconds i saw the battery charging icon on my desktop was showing orange color instead of showing usual charging animation. than i smelt something burning and when i touched the adapter it was too hot and  i immediately pulled the adapter wire from the laptop first than disconnect it from the power socket. than i switched off the laptop and just to be sure again i switched it on and it booted up fine.

My electrician told me that the reason was wrong polarity on the socket.

i want to know whether there could be some damage in my laptop due to this polarity and if yes how to test it. i read in one post on other forum regarding ac adapters that in some laptops there will be fuse for protection . i want to buy new ac adapter (130watts) my charger was from lite-on technology .

also please suggest whether i can get 130 watts charger with correct readings from other suppliers other than dell

Laptop was running fine. Next time went to use it wouldn't turn on.  I had been getting a message saying battery needed to be replaced - but had ignored because couldn't afford a new one at the moment!  I have tried taking battery out,  holding on button for 10 seconds.  Power adapter light is on.  If I take battery out and plug in it will start up but goes off in seconds.  If I keep battery  in and try nothing.  Please help!  If I need to get a new battery I will just  want to be sure that will solve problems.

Dell XPS 12 won't retain power option settings

$

I've been trying to change my power options. I go into Power Saver, "change plan settings," and try to change the "On battery" setting from "Put the computer to sleep: 3 minutes" to "Put the computer to sleep: Never."

I've made this change a number of times, but after a while my computer simply reverts back to the 3 minute setting on its own. So, I leave the machine alone for a few minutes, I come back, and it's asleep...even though I thought I had changed the setting to 30 minutes. And in fact, I *had* changed the setting to 30 minutes; the computer is somehow reverting to 3 minutes on its own.

Anyone else experienced this? Got an answer? Thanks!

XPS 14 USB ports failed

$

I am extremely disappointed in my Dell XPS 14 laptop.  It is not even 18 months old, and both of the USB ports failed today.  After spending nearly 90 minutes on the phone with Dell Tech support, updating the BIOS and all of the other possible drivers, I was informed that it must be the motherboard.  I was then told that it will cost me nearly $300 to have it replaced.

The biggest disappointment is that I have "babied" this laptop -- it's my personal machine (not my work one), so it has spent 95% of its time in my home office and only 5% of the time being moved around.  It hasn't left my office in nearly a month!  It was not subject to any changes in temperature, no shocks (it is behind a very high-end surge protector), no bumps, no shakes, no nothing.  The USB ports just decided it must be time to quit.

I have purchased a couple of Dell workstations prior to this, and recently purchased another laptop for my son to use at college.  I expected a lot more from Dell than this.

Latitude E5520 will not power up.

Hi all,

I've been having a problem with my Latitude E5520.  The other day, my girlfriend was using it, finished what she was doing, and put the computer to sleep.  Later on, I went to use it, and it was completely dead in the water.  No lights or anything when I went to power it up.  What's most concerning to me is when I plug the charger in, the blue light on the charger turns of as soon as I plug it in to the computer.  I'm thinking it might be a combination of a dead battery and a dead charging board.  I've done a bit of looking and it doesn't seem like this is a common problem, so I guess I'm just looking for a bit of guidance.

Hi,

I am facing issues with my Dell Inspiron N5010 lately.

I have dine the BIST diagnostics and it seems to fine. Also i am eventually able to bring up the screen and use the laptop with all functionalities (videos etc). but next day turns out to be the same problem and i have to spend like 10-15 mins getting it back to working state.

Also sometimes it loses video abruptly after a fine start. and there goes my 15 minutes again.

Could you please advise a permanent solution for this, needless to say i don't want to spend a lot of money on it anymore.
