I'm running Win. 7 and at first everything ran fine when I went from Vista to 7. My DVD Reader, CD reader and DVD writer works fine. Now the problem is that it will no longer burn to a plain CD. I've down loaded all drivers recommend but still won't write to CD, it burns a great DVD and a double DVD just not CD's.

Hello there,

my dell inspiron n5010 is giving me creeps by switching off automatically within few seconds from start up. Now I have called dell support this morning for help and I have been told that my motherboard needs to be replaced. As for replacing the motherboard, I am not in the good financial state to replace it. So I need advice regarding how to fix my laptop without replacing motherboard ? Also is it possible to repair motherboard ?

I would like to mention one more thing that longer I keep my laptop switch off longer it work before switching off automatically.

Please help me in sorting out this problem.

Thanks

Latitude E6540 Mouse button confusion...

I have seen this occasionally on other laptops, but never this bad. The mouse BUTTONS on the trackpoint AND touchpad seem to be out of sync. Pressing the left button on the trackpad does a "clicklock" and draws a select square around on the desktop, and pressing the right button does nothing (Supposed to bring up the windows context menus).  Pressing EITHER button on the trackpad brings up the windows context menus.  Plugging in a mouse results in random possibiliites, including these already mentioned. I have reloaded the entire OS (after formatting the hard drive), and have run the Pre Boot Assessment diagnostics (which of course don't check the mouse :-\ ). I thought it could be hardware related, but it doesn't seem to be a problem during diags.  I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling/updating drivers, chipset software, and A10 BIOS update. Nothing has caused any change at all.  There does seem to be a moment of lag at times between pressing a button or moving the mouse, and its response. Thanks in advance for any help anyone could provide.

Dell Inspiron 15 3521 black screen after updates

While using my laptop last night, I was prompted to reboot in order to install some updates. I selected restart now, and after the restart, it appeared that the updates took place without issue. I was then prompted to login again and, once I did, a black screen. I could move the mouse and see the cursor, but nothing else happened. I've tried restarting my computer - I see the Dell logo and can login once at the login screen, but then I get stuck at the same black screen.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Dell XPS 15 - bios bug report - how to get that report to the right people (dell engineers) ?

Hello.

BIOS bug was found in (late 2013 model) Dell XPS 15. Linux validates many ACPI related things and problem with ACPI thermal zones definition became visible. Bios version is: Dell XPS 9530 System BIOS A06

The bug is that: "_AC2 is defined while _AL2 is not, thus this is an invalid active trip point."

Could someone from dell forward this to dell BIOS engineers?

USB3.0 ports stopped working after Windows 8.1 update (Latitude E5530)

Good evening, recently one our coworker upgraded his Latitude E5530 from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro. We did few upgrades before with only minor software issues, but not with this. After update everything except USB3.0 ports works normally. I think laptop has corrupted drivers.

There was no USB3.0 controller and it wont detect any devices such as mouse/keyboard/flash drive in any ports. Windows detect, but fails to install hardware, its unknown device.

USB3.0 controller looked like this in device manager:

Updating the driver results in this:

Also there was disabled part of chipset, i enabled it but still no luck:

I have also found this information on some Asus forums with similar issue.

" Intel only offer drivers for USB 3.0 under Windows 7, I regret to inform you that Intel does not have plans to develop USB 3.0 drivers for Win8. The drivers are provided by Microsoft.
In regards to USB 2.0 is the same thing as USB 3.0 drivers, they are part of the operating system. I recommend checking with Asus for more information. "

In Windows 8, USB3.0 and USB drivers are built in system and Microsoft writes them not Intel so even Intel driver autodetect didnt helped:

I was able to get USB3.0 drivers for Windows 8. BUT!

I had to turn offf Windows 8 digital driver signing check: http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/

I installed USB root xHCI driver sucessfully and it started detecting hard drives and flash drives on USB2.0 and 3.0 ports. It wont detect anything else though, respectivelly it detects but dont install drivers. Here are some screenshots:

Running elevated command prompt and type: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth didnt helped too :(

has anyone similar issues like this? is there way how to force reinstalling all drivers or checking their integrity?

Thanks imn advance for constructive ideas, i am currently unable to solve this :(

I'm posting this to re-open the debate around the electrical coil whine found in all new dell xps 13 model. The last thread was shut down because of breach of rules but it was an important place for people to keep an eye on when Dell would be releasing the updated board which promises to fix the problem.

Please tell us what you know about what's going on so everyone can be up to speed on what Dell is doing to fix the issue

How to Replace Windows 8 32-bit with Windows 8 64-bit

$

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520.  The drivers CD sent with my Dell are for Windows 7 64-bit, which was the original operating system.

A couple of months ago the hard drive failed.  I purchased a new hard drive from Dell and installed it.  I purchased Windows 8 from Microsoft, and they sent me two discs - a 32-bit and a 64- bit.

I unfortunately installed the 32-bit.  I tried to download new drivers/utilities from the Dell website, but could not find them for Windows 8 32-bit.  I only saw them for Windows 8 64-bit.

So it looks like I need to re-install Windows, and use the 64-bit CD.  But I haven't been able to figure out how to do this.

I tried a simple reboot with the 64-bit CD in, but that did not work.  I did some research and read that I may have to reformat the hard drive as well as reinstall Windows.

So this is where I am stuck.  How do I reinstall Windows, using my 64-bit CD?

Many thanks,

Rose

Preferred Method to Apply Updates to My Dell XPS Laptop

$

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the preferred method for applying updates to my laptop? For example I have an Nvidia graphics card installed and I occasionally am informed, via Windows Update, that there is an update available for that driver. However, I thought I read somewhere that I am better off applying the video driver updates from the Dell site rather than applying them via Windows Update. What's the straight scoop? I don't want this to become a maintenance headache in that I have to research all of the Windows Updates to figure out which ones should be applied and which ones I need to apply from the Dell site. A little guidance would be helpful.

Regards,

Dennis

laptop wont start

Hello,
I just bought a DELL e7240 from a local retailer, with 4gb of default RAM and I also bought a larger RAM to replace the default one.

I bought Kingston HyperX for Dell Latitude E7240. It is one stick of 8G. I have read that they are compatible:http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/Default.aspx?DeviceType=3&Mfr=DEL&Line=Latitude&Model=85016

Now after I installed the new RAM, I try starting my laptop and the fan noise can be heard for 2-3 seconds, then it shuts down and the battery and wireless leds keep flashing every 1 second.

If I try to put back the original memory it doesn't work either.
I think it's too soon to call the seller, as I am hoping that I can still do something to fix this, but I have no clue what.

Does anybody have any idea what might have happened or how can I fix this?

1 hour ago I put the original memory back and it worked, but after, I tried again to put the kingston and no matter what I do, now none of them work.

Thank you

New-ish tricks for an old dog: Precision M4300 notebook

$

I bought a Precision M4300 a couple of years ago, and it's still doing OK with its mighty Core 2 Duo processor. I thought I'd pass along a few suggestions to keep it happy.

1) I used to have a lot of problems with choppy video. While the Dell doesn't have the best video card (an understatement, to be sure), the main problem was that the video processor was RUNNING TOO HOT and automatically reducing its performance to compensate. (There are lots of free utilities out there that will provide processor temps). If you flush all the vents with a good shot of air from a compressor or "canned air," you'll see a gratifying cloud of dust emerge, and the problem should go away. (Related rant: I have NEVER, EVER seen that advice posted on Dell Support, though I've seen the choppy video question posted many times.)

2) If you still have an original hard drive, it probably was 5,200 rpm. Moving up to a new, larger 7,200 rpm drive will give a nice speed boost, both from the faster read/write and the fact that there'll be more free space on the disk, resulting in less fragmentation (or at least slower fragmentation). Very easy to replace.

3) Windows 7 runs fine (I had XP Pro previously), and the 64-bit version is recommended (which I have) -- gives a noticeable speed improvement over XP, plus is a significantly nicer system. Also, the 64-bit architecture lets you access all 4 gb of RAM (the most memory that can be installed, and which is adequate for running a browser, Word and maybe 1 more app at the same time).

4) I've found the new (and free) driver update utilities to be really helpful for making sure all your drivers are up to date.  I've been pleased with Iolo's Driver Booster (free, stand-alone app), which reported that LOTS of my drivers needed updating the first time that I ran it.

5) Do a search for BIOS issues for this computer before updating BIOS. It sounds like some of the updates were problematic. I avoided any problems by never updating my BIOS at all ... :)

5) Used docking stations for Latitudes/Precisions run around $25 on E-Bay and are really useful. Among other things, they:

--slightly raise the rear of the notebook, improving cooling.

--add at least 1 more USB port.

--provide legacy keyboard, mouse, VGA and serial ports (which aren't on the Precision).

--make it easy to hook up a whompin' big screen (mine is 28" -- runs just fine on the factory video card.)

One note:  The dock DEMANDS a larger-capacity external power supply than the notebook itself; check the specs. (And, no I don't think you can fool it.) Aftermarket bricks are fine, as long as they're telling the truth about the actual output and have the correct plug for the Dell (Kensington works).

(Related note: One reason why I keep buying Dells is because when I leave behind my power brick in a hotel room, I can always find one at a client's to borrow -- so far, this theory has been tested in Hong Kong and Singapore.)

Also, the Precision was designed so you could plug in a new processor -- allegedly up to a Core 2 Duo T9500 2.60Ghz 800Mhz 6Mb (don't take my word for it though). A new one of those is a snappy $250 at Amazon ($370 off the original price!), but I suspect you could find used/slower versions for a lot less. I have no idea if it's worth it, unless you're one of those stubborn types (like me) who likes to get his money's worth out of every damn thing he buys.

I figure the Precision will be good for another couple of years. Then I'm going back to Mac (seriously). Fifteen years of Windows is enough ... even though I managed to skip Vista entirely.

Regards to all.

Inspiron 15 Card Reader Fixed

The Realtek memory card reader on my brand new Dell 15 5000 laptop would not read SD cards.  It's a model 5547 with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit operating system.  I tried installing the updated drivers package from support.dell.com for my Service Code, but that didn't fix it.  I then tried uninstalling it from Device Manager to let Windows just recognize and install it.  That didn't work either, even though in both cases Device Manager under Disk Drives said it was working and would show either "SD" (Dell driver) or "Disk Drive" (Windows native driver) in Device Manager when a card was inserted.  Still no drive or files showing in Windows Explorer.  Dell chat support then scheduled an on-site repair to have a tech replace the card reader.  That was just today, so the repair tech has not come out yet.

However I fixed it already by going to the Realtek website and locating/installing the driver for a Realtek RTS5169.  My installed model is an RTS5179, but I figured I'd try the available driver from Realtech anyway.  Bottom line is that now the card reader works like a charm and will read my SD cards and allow me to download photos, etc.  Just figured out I'd put this post out there in case anyone else is having this issue, since it's obviously not a hardware issue to begin with and the Dell support site driver package is defective, at least on my new Inspiron 15 5000.  Other than that, I am very happy with the machine and everything works flawlessly.
