New XPS 13 (9333) Constant Noise

$

I have just recently received a new XPS 13 with the new haswell i7 processor, 8gb RAM, 256gb ssd, and windows 8.1.

I really like this laptop, but it makes a really bizarre noise. It happens constantly as soon as its powered on, like a high pitched whirring sound from somewhere beneath the keyboard. It also seems pretty inconsistent, like it flickers in frequency, and when you use programs (e.g scroll through webpages) it gets louder.

Can anyone help me with what the issue is here? Any help appreciated.

I have looked for help after a clean install of a new windows 7 to this laptop.  All went well but no detection of ethernet drivers so no internet.  I cannot use Dell help that requires diagnosis by internet as I cannot  not get on the internet.  I tried downloading suggested drivers to a disc then transferring to laptop but won't work.  Device manager shows yellow X at Ethernet and Network Controller, PCI Simple Communications Controller, SM Bus Controller and Universal Serial Bus Controller.  Please advise

XPS 13 (L322X) BIOS Issue

I'm unable to get into the BIOS on my XPS 13.  Tried F2, F12, DEL, FN-F2, FN-F12.  Nothing will bring up the BIOS at all, just continues to boot.  Tried booting off a USB stick with an OS on it but it won't boot off USB.  Am I using the right key combinations to get into the BIOS?  Are their any key combinations to boot directly off USB?  I have the USB stick in the slot by the power connector.  Tried both but neither seem to be bootable.  Any advice?

Laptop dead?

Hi,

I am facing a seemingly serious problem with my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop, which I bought in 2007. The computer seems (almost) dead.

This is what happens when pressing the power button:

- the LED with the 'power'-symbol goes on and stays on until I press the power button again (a short press suffices). The other two system LEDS don't light up.

- The three 'lock'-LEDS (num, caps and scroll I believe) flash once, all three of them at the same time, shortly. I think (not sure though) this is normal and like before.

- On screen absolutely nothing happens. The screen seems completely dead, like the laptop is turned off.

- I hear two beeps, which is the usual amount of beeps.

- The fan runs for a brief moment, which is also normal and like before.

- The cd/dvd-dock-light blinks a few times, which is probably also normal.

- I hear a little bit of rattling noise, which is also normal and comes from the HD I believe. However, normally it keeps on making little sounds as the laptop starts up and now these don't continue.

Further the laptop stays dead until I turn it off by pressing the power button again.

So basically I have no visuals at all + the laptop seems to hang 2/3 seconds after powering on.

Before my laptop went dead on me, something very strange happened during the last time I used it. I was watching a youtube-video (don't know if this is relevant, but anyhow) when suddenly the screen showed vertical black and white stripes and the sound was gone. The complete screen was frozen in black and white stripes of about 0,5 cm. I tried ctr+alt+del, nothing happened. Then I tried a short push on the power button, nothing happened. Then I pressed the power button a longer time to turn the laptop off. Since this happened, my laptop is dead.

Might also be relevant, but I'm not sure: now and then the laptop has shut down by itself. I am pretty sure this was due to overheating, because the laptop was very hot at the bottom and it only happened when I placed the laptop in a place where the venting-conditions were not ideal (e.g. on a mattress).

I have searched some forums and tried a few things, but nothing made me wiser:

- When I run the laptop only on battery power, the problem stays exactly the same. When I plug the AC-adapter back in, the battery-LED lights up, indicating the battery is being charged (for a short time), which is normal. After a short while, however, the battery-LED starts blinking (a short flash every seven seconds). I don't know whether this is normal and why it blinks.

- I have tried removing the HD and powering on. The problem stays exactly the same.

- I have tried removing both the two RAM-sticks and powering on. The result is exactly the same.

- I tried pressing the Fn-key (during 10 seconds) and then pressing power-on, nothing changes.

- I tried pressing the F2-key shortly after power-on, no result.

I would like to try attaching an external screen, but I don't have another screen or cable, so I can only try this in  few days maybe. The fact that the startup-sounds don't continue, however, make me think the problem lies not (only) with the screen.

Can anyone help me? I don't know what else I can do to try to save my laptop. Any help would be highly appreciated!

Kind regards,

Sanne

I looked at the new Dell XPS laptops but I’m a little scared off because I noticed they have an integrated battery. Is this difficult to change? I’d like to buy another laptop and currently own an almost 3 year old XPS 502 Laptop. I don’t want to have to pay a tech to come out to my home after a couple years of usage.

thanks...

Inspiron 15 Power/Battery status LED

Power and battery-status light Indicates the power and battery status of the computer. Solid white: Power adapter is connected and the battery is fully charged. Off: — Computer is running on battery and the battery has more than 5% charge. — Computer is in sleep state, hibernation, or turned off. Solid yellow: Computer is running on battery and the battery has less than 5% charge. The above is a copy of the text from the Inspiron manual. When I first received the unit it was working as described in the manual but after a day or two and receiving updates I noticed that when I turned on the unit the LED would initially be a Solid white but then faded to off after a few seconds. Tech support tried to convince me that what it was doing was normal so I asked if the manual was wrong and they said no. I expected the LED to be on Solid white when I was on AC and the battery was fully charged which it was doing for the first few days but then started to be solid white and fade to off after a few seconds. Anyone else having the same problem? This is not really a big deal but I find it strange that Tech Support tried to convince me it was normal. I am used to seeing the power on LED “ON” when the unit is on.

Beep sound during BIOS update

Hello,

I have a DELL Inspiron 15R 5520 and i was updating BIOS from version A07 to A14 and it required a restart but while it was restarting i heard a 1 beep from the laptop and then it continued to boot normally and i also noticed that the bios logo became different from the one that was in the old BIOS version A07.The logo still displays DELL and a porgress bar but it look kinda different from the older version A07.I have two questions here and i need someone with experience to answer them:

1- Does the beep sound that occured during the BIOS update process indicate problems or it is just normal ?

2- Is it normal that the BIOS logo change after BIOS update ?

Please help me and answer my questions. I hope there is no harm to my laptop and its BIOS .

Thank You.

Studio 1536 restart problem

my Dell Studio 1537 laptop won't restart to the Dell Logo screen, it just goes to a blue screen.  I have to shut it down and restart it several times before it finally goes to the Dell Logo screen.  Then it says it did not shut down properly and asks if I want to start normally or safe start.  If I select start normally, it will start ok.

Does anyone have suggestions?

D830 motherboard loose pigtail.

Just bought an older D830 for automotive tuning as it has the RS232 port, have upgraded with SSD and 4gig of RAM and am pleased with its performance so far.

When cleaning the cooling radiator I noticed a loose pigtail near the modem chip with no obvious connection, looking at various ads for sale and youtube- it is a common unplugged wire loom. What is its function or what will it affect if removed? Don't like loose wires anywhere.

Dell XPS 15 (9530) Ambient Light Senor

$

I'm unable to find a setting at the OS or Bios level that will disable to Ambient Light sensor.  Am i not looking in the right spot?  For, its not lighting up as much as i want it to be.  I shouldn't have to be at the whim of what MOST people prefer.

At boot up, my screen is bright and beautiful, within seconds of the desktop loading the sensor kicks in.

So basically, how can i turn this off??

Thanks,

Dave
