Issue with Inspiron 3520 touchpad -

Hi all.

I am having an issue with the touchpad on my Inspiron 3520.

The issue is this:

When I use the scrollbar to scroll down a page, for example a website or list of documents, it (the scrollbar) 'jumps' back to the top of the page when I move the cursor away to click on a link or document. So say for example I do a Google search on 'Dell' because I'm looking for 'Dell support', I will left-click on the scrollbar and scroll down the results page using the touchpad until I see the 'Dell support' link, which is about halfway down the results page. Now, when I move the cursor off the scrollbar and move it toward the link (or document) the scrollbar will 'jump' back to the top of the results page (or list of documents). It's the same in any window I open with a scrollbar so it's not just an issue with web browsing.

Attempted resolutions:

So far I have updated all Windows updates and have uninstalled the touchpad  driver and installed the latest driver through the My Dell portal. I've done a hardware scan, again with My Dell, and a full anti-virus scan, and various command prompt scans to check for potential malware and/or hardware issues, and I've run MS Fix It. Everything comes back clean. I have also checked the touchpad's settings to ensure they haven't somehow changed from where the were before the issue started. They are as they were.

Any ideas on this guys? I've spent hour upon hour trying to resolve it!

Many thanks

Dell Studio 1749 - 3 Blinking Lights but no Post

My daughter's 1749 laptop shut itself off and now when you plugin the power adapter, the light over the plug on the laptop blinks three times.  It will not power on at all.

I have replaced the power jack in the laptop as well as the cpu and tried different known-good ram but nothing makes any difference.  I can't find anything on the forums regarding this issue except one that was never answered.

What does the light over the power jack blinking three times indicate?  Can someone from Dell support tell me that at least so I know which direction to go with my next set of attempts to get this laptop working again?

Has anyone had success in diagnosing and repairing this issue?

Inspiron 15z 5523 USB problems?

Hello,

I have an Inspiron 15z 5523 and it's not older than 3 months.

I attach my USB mouse in the 1st USB hub in the left side of the laptop which is right beside the HDMI hub.

I frequently sometimes maybe every two days, I suddenly get a message in Windows saying "Your USB Device malfunctioned and Windows doesn't recognize it" and then I have to unplug the USB mouse and plug it again to work again.

Is this a flaw in this specific USB hub for this model?

cant disable touchpad

ive been having a lot of problems with my dell inspiron n7110 lately but one of the issues ive been having for a long time is that my disable touchpad key (fn-f3) does not work. fn-f4 & fn-f5 which decrease and increase my brightness work just fine, and so do my mute and other volume keys. the only one that doesnt seem to work is the one to disable the touchpad.

i tried the start-x thing and found these two sections

the function key row button will not open anything, and hitting the "turn on" button for the touchpad also does nothing.

also the f3 key itself DOES work. i play a video game that uses it and it works just fine there, so it has nothing to do with the key itself being broken

i have no idea what this means. please help and thanks for reading

Inspiron 3137 freezing at boot logo (splash) screen

Looking for some troubleshooting tips on the above issue  It has been happening since I got the unit two months ago, although in the past two weeks it is now happening every other boot. I've been going back an forth with tech support on the issue.  What I've already done:

  • Ran Memtest on memory module (this is the 3rd memory module I've had due to upgrades from 2 to 4 to 8GB; the freezing occurred with them all)
  • Ran the MyDell stress test
  • Ran PCMark 7 benchmark  (hoping to get it to freeze or otherwise freak out)
  • Made sure RAM was properly seated
  • Checked all motherboard connections
  • Checked for viruses using multiple scanners

I was planning on re-installing Win8 anyhow, now that my touchpad issue is resolved (see other thread!) however I have a feeling this is hardware-related.  Anyhow, any input appreciated...

Dell XPS 12 9Q33 (AC power adapter plugged in, not charging)

So I seem to have the same problem as some other users out there. I've had this notebook for about a month and a half now. It was working fine until recently. When I plug in the AC power adapter cable, a message pops up saying that the AC adapter type cannot be determined, and that my system will operate slower and battery will not charge. It then tells me to connect a Dell 45W AC adapter, which it already is. I can confirm that it's not charging by hovering over the battery icon in my system tray. This is the second time that this has happened. The first time I simply switched to a different power outlet and that seemed to do the trick, but this time it isn't doing it.

Basically, I've been following the instructions on this post: http://commweb-ps3.us.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19511058/20387444.aspx#20387444

I've checked my battery health by hitting Fn+F3 to pull up the Battery Meter and it tells me nothing is wrong with the battery. I can't enable Desktop mode because it's greyed out. I confirmed that the battery was fine by going into the BIOS as well. Another thing was that in the BIOS, "Unknown" shows up beside AC Adapter on the main page. While in the BIOS, I unplugged and replugged the AC adapter, and it still comes back as "unknown." Therefore, I've tried resetting to defaults, and still no results. I've also performed an ePSA diagnostic and my notebook passed all the tests. Currently power passes through the cable as the white light on the plug still lights up and it's continuing to power my notebook. I looked in at the pin and there aren't any damages that I can see. Something else I also tried was go into Device Manager, and under Battery, uninstalled the Microsoft AC Adapter, and replugged in the power adapter, but that didn't do anything.

The last thing I have yet to try is to update my BIOS as I'm currently running A02. However, I can't do so since my battery is currently at 7%. But it's been working before so would doing a BIOS update solve the problem? It seemed to do the trick for the other user from the post I linked, but then again, his adapter actually shows up as 45W in the BIOS whereas mine shows up as unknown.

What options do I have? I still have warranty coverage. Thank you in advance.

Vostro 3460 Backlit Keyboard

Greetings, I bought a Vostro 3460 in December 2012 with a standard IT layout keyboard. Recently I had to work in very dark places with my laptop and a backlit keyboard would be very useful. Is there a backlit version of my keyboard? I saw that recent models of 3460 have this option. Cleaning the laptop I saw a small empty connector under the keyboard. Maybe for the backlit. The IT layout also is not mandatory. Any help would be appreciated. Francesco

How to get a system back to from the factory condition.

I am helping a friend whose laptop hd crashed on her. After re-installing the OS from the Dell supplied DVD I need to get the rest of the software that was installed on the system. If I go to support.dell.com and try to register the system I get the much loved "service tag not supported" message. Is there any way to get the software other than buying a new laptop? Yes this one is out of warranty but you should be able to get the software that was originally installed on it with out a lot of problems. The system is a Inspiron N7010.

Thanks for any help I can get.

Let's Encourage Dell to Support Linux On Existing and New PCs

Hello Everyone,

I am a Dell customer who uses the Dell Inspiron 15R 5520. Like you, I want to get the most out of my Dell products. For me, this means having my computer's hardware function properly not only in Windows, but also in Linux operating systems. As a tech enthusiast, I wanted to do something different with my Dell product, so I installed Linux, one of most important operating systems used today.

Unfortunately, my Linux experience is plagued by fan speed issues, and Dell does not necessarily make its products work well with the operating system, as it does with Windows. So, with regards to Linux, I cannot get the most out of my Dell computer.

Please encourage Dell to support Linux on existing and new PCs by liking and/or commenting on this post in favor of it. This way, anyone who wants to try something new or just wants to use a different operating system for whatever reason, and settles upon installing Linux to their Dell computers may enjoy what their computer has to offer in running the operating system.

Thanks,

-Jordan

Hi Folks, I bought a XPS13 with an I7-4510U processor, up to 3.1GHz. Once I go to my specs in my computer it will show me CPU @ 2.00GHz 2.60Ghz. Does anyone knows how to increase the performance to 3.1GHz ? And what it is going to affect the other settings ? Cheers, Alex.

Help Needed: Latitude E6430 Laptop DVD/CD Drive Won't Play CD's or DVD's

Good afternoon.

My Dell Latitude E6430 abruptly stopped playing DVD's.  There is no error message, but when I insert a DVD (or, CD -- same difference), the hour glas continually appears and reappears on the desktop as if the drive is attempting to read the disc.  You can hear the attempts to launch, but ultimately to no avail.  I'm open to any and all suggestions at this point, as the computer is less than 6 months old.

Thank you,

Scott

e7240 CONSTANT LOUD NOISE FROM FAN / VENTILATOR TURNING ALL THE TIME

We received 2 brand new E7240s directly from Dell, one for myself and one for my colleague. As soon as I turned it on to build it for my colleague, I noticed the machine was overheating and the fan was making a noise. Dell suggested a BIOS upgrade which didn't change anything. They then changed the heatsink, again this changed nothing and since then they changed the motherboard. My colleague has gone on holiday so I don't know if her issue has been resolved, however, my laptop from day one does not overheat (as obviously as it did for my colleague) BUT THE FAN TURNS ALL THE TIME. So much so that I think the person in the upstairs bedroom is using her hairdryer. Dell replaced the heatsink and the motherboard yesterday, I have done the same BIOS upgrade and the problem is even worse. As soon as I switch the thing on, the ventilator turns all the time making a loud noise. My previous model was the E6500 and I wasn't bothered by any noises it made.

The 7240 makes so much noise that I want to throw it out of the window Super Angry , seriously I am going to switch back to my 5 year old e6500 which is now very slow, I just can't take the constant hair dryer noise from the fan! I am waiting for Dell to get back to me but I don't see what else they can do.

I suspect there is a design problem with newer models, someone with a Latitude 13 Notebook has also mentioned it on the forums, also someone else with an e7240 states "I have noticed the fan running much of the time - it's quiet but you're aware it's spinning.  I am just setting it up though, so the CPU is fairly busy." A person with the e6320 states "And the fan is loud and turns itself on way too often".

Dell Latitude E7240 issues

Hello,

So my company purchased a Dell Latitude E7240 laptop with the E-Port docking station (the one with just 1 DVI/VGA connection).  The laptop is fine by itself but it has issues when we undock it and then re-dock it.  The problem is that the user (just happens to be the President of the company :() has 7 or so USB devices and since the docking station only has 5 ports available, we bought a separate USB hub for her (and the USB hub has its own AC adapter).

So if she has the laptop in the docking station docked and turns on the laptop, everything is fine.  However, whenever she undocks it and then docks it again none of the USB devices work.  The problem is that it doesn't happen every time she undocks and re-docks but enough that it is extremely annoying.  Also when this happens, the laptop won't restart or shut down without any issues...it just hangs at "shutting down Windows" screen.  I have to manually hold down the power button to get it to shut off.

We have had a Dell tech come out and swap out the motherboard on the laptop and that seemed to fix the issue but a day or two later the issue cropped up again.  I just received a new docking station from Dell and swapped it out but, again, still having the issue.

The laptop is Win. 7 64bit OS load; has all the latest drivers that I know of...so....anyone else with the similar experience and/or any thoughts on how to fix this?

Thanks!
