I got my brand new xps 12 (haswell) yesterday. I spent maybe 3 hours looking around, installing software, optimizing accesability settings etc. then put it into sleep mode for the night, plugged in. Today it won't turn on.The light on the power switch pulses when it's plugged in, and the lights on the opposite side show the battery is fully charged, but nothing I do will get it to turn on. Any suggestions/advice?

The delay between my touchpad and keyboard

I am currently using Inspiron 3520 and I have encountered a serious problem. I was experiencing a delay between my keyboard and touchpad. I tried my mouse, but nothing changed. Everytime I use my keyboard, my touchpad won't work for about 3 sec. This is really annoying and I couldn't find a way to fix it. Did anyone experienced same problem and managed to fix it?

Clicking noise from Dell Inspiron 17r

So I have had my Dell Inspiron 17r for a little almost a year. I have had various problems since buying it such as blue screens. The blue screens are usually Kernal Data inpage errors. As of recently my laptop has also been making a clicking sound and it also doesn't turn on what usually happens is I push the button and the clicking begins and the laptop does not go pass the initial dell logo page but after many tries it will sometimes turn on. I have checked most of the possibilities and it seems to be coming from the hard drive . I just do not want to buy a new hard drive and find out that my laptop has a different problem. Has anybody had this problem before? Could it be possible that it is something other than the hard drive?

problems getting help from tech support

Hello:

My Inspiron 17R is not even a year old. This is the third time it isn't working and have had long discussions with   tech support. This past time I was on the phone one day for 2.5 hours, then 3.5 hours and the last time 1 hour. They thought it was a sofeware problem so reset the machine removing all my software, documents, photos and the like. Then they said it was a hardware problem with the optical and hard-drive. The other time it was the mother board and then the mother board and fan that were all replaced (which took weeks for the parts and then to the get the repairman's schedule) .  It has been frustrating and a huge time commitment to get the laptop fixed each time it has had problems (eg. taking days off work, not having a computer, reloading documents, files etc).  This machine seems to be a lemon. One thing gets repaired and then they tell me another thing is broken. The laptop hasn't gotten rough treatment--it hasn't left my office desk.

The tech Cyp was very polite and very helpful during the 2.5 and 3.5 hour conversations. The next tech began frustrated when nothing we tried fixed the machine--I had to wait while they sent software via the mail--  and said it must be a hardware problem and put on the supervisor. The supervisor Frank was to call me today by 6 pm Eastern (an hour ago). He also said he would send me a follow up email but it never arrived.

I've waited all day to hear from Frank but haven't gotten a response to my emails.

Any suggestions on who I can call or email to get this resolved? This has been going on for over a week.    Thanks.

Cursor jumps back when typing

I have Dell Latitude D510.  Recently the cursor has been jumping back when typing, so I find the last few letters appear earlier on in the document.  It's not a Word issue, as happens sometime when typing in Google.

Touchpad only has basic features activated.

Seems to relate to when I rest on the laptop, as if I hover it seems ok - but this is impractical & a bad typing posture!

Other non-Dell forums talk of several causes and several cures, none of which help!

Any ideas, or do I need a new laptop?

Thanks

It says media failure on realtek controller. This computer won't boot properly. I checked bios and ,and everything appeared normal.  I just bought this computer and I am having nothing but trouble from it. This is the third Dell laptop I have bought from the chat sight. I am wondering if the hard drive is defective. I would like to arrange to return it to Dell, and am wondering how to go about this? Although it does not recognize the hard drive.

I tried everything I could to turn the WIFI back on my Dell Inspiron LAPTOP 1545 after I recently did modification on my symantec antivirus, but failed. So far, these are the steps I performed in trying to turn on the WIFI.

1. There's no "ON and Off "switch.

2. Pressed "FN" and F2.

3. Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>find the WIFI Adapter>Right Click>Enable.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Latitude E5520 screen flutters

I do volunteer work using a Latitude E5520 (c.2011) which has developed a flutter on the screen that makes it impossible to read. Have run the Dell diagnostic test and they can't find any problems. Do I go and replace the screen or is there a driver error?

Why does the text cursor jump out of place?

$

The text cursor suddenly and inexplicably jumps from the end of an ongoing line of typing back to somewhere else in the document field. It seems to happen in all activities on this laptop that involve typing, regardless of program.  It's very aggravating, especially if you are looking at a document alongside the computer or something, and not looking at the screen continually;  if you miss the glitch you may have to unscramble several lines of text.   I've been tempted to think it was a weakness in the case that allows pressure from the heels of our hands to affect subsurface components, but I know that's probably reaching for straws.

My wife used to complain about it (I got the laptop for her), but she doesn't use it that much and isn't into computer use very much anyway, so I brushed it aside as due to her lack of computer typing expertise and that she likely was hitting some key somewhere that was messing things up.  But now that I've been using it to replace my old and slow Dell XP desktop, I've been running into the same annoyance regularly - often several times in a one page document or email.

I'm not getting much out of posts to Windows and Microsoft forums - they suggest I try a Dell forum, but I have no idea whether it's hardware or software that's gone awry.

This is a 2008 Dell XPS 1530, Vista SP2.

N5110 created recovery partition I don't want--now not showing

$

Just had a new hard drive put in my N5110 (i5 core, 750 GB) Win 7 64 bit. Been working on getting data back on it from an external drive I saved stuff to, getting programs running, etc. over the past day.

A recovery partition was created that I don't want and couldn't stop, now it's not showing under my computer, and I don't know what to do to get the space back to my C drive, to create a restore media, and to then backup to an external hard drive.

The story...

At some point, while in the middle of a complicated update of an audio software program,  and some other things, a message popped up about setting up Dell Data Safe--I wasn't quite sure what it was.  I had downloaded some updates from Dell a little earlier. The message that came up seemed like it was timed to run and open a dialogue for me. I clicked "OK" or something to see what it wanted to do. Not knowing what it was going to do, thinking it would be a simple process trying to activate something simple, it started running a system scan. I clicked "cancel" a few times because I needed to finish my other processes and wanted to delete some stuff before dealing with backing the system up.

It didn't stop after clicking cancel multiple times.

It created a 194 GB recovery partition drive. I don't want that--I've planned to backup to an external hard drive.

I did a sys restore to try and reverse the process and get those GB back in my C drive. The sys restore changed my other programs back and updates done since the restore point, but it didn't undo the creation of the recovery partition as I hoped.

Since I seemed to be stuck with the recovery partition drive for now, I undid my restore so that I wouldn't have to re-do all of the other things I'd done (downloads, program updates, etc.). After that, those programs were functioning as before, but the partition recovery drive no longer appears.

After reading some things online, I looked in Control Panel/Admin tools/create-format hard disk partitions and the recovery partition appears as RECOVERY: 194.93 GB Healthy (Primary Partition).

After all this, I tried using the Data Safe program to create a recovery media (intending to have it on my external drive, but couldn't figure out how to do it--the program offered that option but wouldn't let me do it.

How can I get rid of the recovery partition and return the space to my C drive? Can I still create a recovery media and save it to my external drive? Can I then backup now and regularly to my external drive (which has the space available to do so)?

The computer and programs are otherwise working fine--I don't need to recover any programs or data, just the drive space.

This Dell Data Safe program/utility seems like it's trying to get me to upgrade from free to paying for to premium. Seems like a bad deal-create a drive whose creation it won't let me prevent by hitting cancel, hide it, and then not allow me to use other features of the program that free users are supposed to be able to use.

Obviously I'm very confused and at a loss about what to do and what this means.

Thanks for info and suggestions.

E6540 Inadequate Thermal System! ATTN: Dell

$

Okay, so I have decided to revise this thread to accommodate the recent interest by customers who own this notebook.

Nutshell Explanation: The E6540 and its "one-fan" design is totally inadequate for properly cooling the i7-4800MQ and the AMD HD 8790M. The advertised specifications (2.7Ghz) are unobtainable during realworld and benchmark testing scenarios. The cooling system just can not handle the thermal footprint of the CPU/GPU.

Long Explanation: I have spent a lot of time and effort in researching this problem. Here are a few things I have discovered. First, Dell has a history with producing systems that can't handle the thermal requirements of the chips installed inside of them. One would think that Dell would learn from their mistakes... Second, the Latitude E series is probably an "end of life" model. Dell jumped the gun on the E6540 and failed to do the engineering. They assumed that the E6530 design could accommodate a CPU/GPU combination with a higher TDP than it's predecessor (E6530). Likewise, the E6540 was one of the first enterprise-grade Haswell notebooks. So I'm sure the pressure was really on at Dell to push this out of the door. These machines are inherently flawed. DOA! We have been scammed. For those of you who have upgraded to the 2.8Ghz model. You really got scammed! You will never be able to use that horsepower.

I have been a 15+ year Apple customer. This has been my first PC in a long time. Frankly, I'm very disappointed.

Now. Let me go ahead and leave a few links here that reference other forums/sources that discuss this issue:

plugged in, not charging

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 in April 2008.

About 1 month ago I noticed that my computer would automaticaly shut down when the power cord was removed, I hovered over the battery icon in the bottom right corner and it said 0% available plugged in, not charging.

I googled the phrase plugged in, not charging and realised lots of people were having the same problem.

I have tried

  • restarting and shutting down my computer (with and without battery and with and without power cord)
  • removing and replacing my battery (while laptop is on and off)
  • a replacement battery from Dell
  • my sister's battery and power cord (she also has a 1525)in my laptop and get the message plugged in, not charging. My battery in her laptop will charge but my power cord in her laptop says plugged in, not charging
  • removing the battery with the laptop on then restarting the laptop and replacing the battery
  • uninstalling and reinstalling the Power Management Software
  • switching between power plans
  • flashing with current bios

All 3 batteries (hers, my original and my replacement) have adequate charge (50% or higher)

I run with Windows Vista Home edition

Can anyone help me or suggest anything else?

I have been to the local Dell distributer and they tell me to call Dell.  I have tried calling Dell but I keep getting put on hold for 30+ minutes.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Word of advice to Dell Outlet laptop buyers-check that SMART data

$
0
0

I recently bought a Dell latitude E6540 about 5 days ago, and 3 days in I noticed 2 issues, one of which I will not talk about, but I am talking about the major one-the drive's SMART data

I checked the SMART data on this drive, since I heard Dell uses used hard drives in their Dell Outlet laptops, and this laptop uses a Seagate, which has a bad reputation these days since they "cheaped out" their spinning hard drives as they make SSD's and platter drives now. Well, I believe the used drive thing now(either that or they use Seagate Certified Repaired drives, which are usually as bad as a used drive), so if you have a Dell Latitude with a SSHD or FIPS/Opal drive, check the drive and make sure it's not a Seagate-if it is, see how bad the SMART attributes are

How do you do this? Well, I ran 2 programs on my E6540 to find this, and I know of one more, but I forgot to run it, plus I find using a old school Parallel printer with a docking station makes using it better, so I only ran 2/3 programs thru it, which I feel will be adequate

First, download Speccy Portable, and check under Storage for the drive model-in short, if you have a 500GB drive, it will probably be Seagate-if it starts with ST as the model, it's a Seagate drive

Next, you can also find the SMART data here too under "S.M.A.R.T Attributes", though I would run it in anything else if you want to get some credibility-it's probably accurate, but play it safe-if you wish to include it, cross compare before putting it in the return! I don't have experience with Speccy SMART data accuracy, and I will not warrant it!

After you confirm your drive is a Seagate, download CrystalDisk Info Portable and run it-pull the window until you read ALL of the data in one go-if ANY numbers are at the Worst numbers, RMA the machine as the drive is a ticking time bomb, and do it ASAP

Screencap CrystalDisk Info with Print Screen or the Snipping tool in Win7/Win8 and print this-put it in the box

Next, you want to run Parted Magic-if you have a Ultimate Boot CD on hand, it already has this in the CD, but you can download it online, too

Run that and dump the contents into RAM as it will run better and the CD can go away and click Disk Health, and select the Seagate hard drive, and then go under Attributes-if you see ANYTHING that says "pre failure" there, RMA the machine and use a digital camera or make your printer work as a one-off in a RAM loaded Linux session, your choice but if you use a camera, use a clean area and zoom in on the screen and print this, too

As to backing up before returning the machine.... choose your tool; I used Windows Backup on mine, and it worked well enough but be warned if the drive is so bad it has major errors, this may fail and you will need to resort to a manual backup.

So, what can be told from this? Used hard drives without at least checking the Current and Worst numbers in SMART should not be used, Dell is shipping Outlet laptops with bad drives and the Dell diagnostics DO NOT WORK-if they did, it would catch this problem BEFORE the threshold hit in the Worst section. Dell needs to stop checking SMART thresholds, and worry about the Worst number, instead-once a drive hits it's worst number, it's done and should be replaced and destroyed. You also need to check Dell Outlet laptops before your 21 day return policy is up; do it the day you get it out of the box, a few days later and then one last time before the 21 day period is up; if that all passes, you're home free

Inspiron 15 7537 • Battery Plugged In, Not Charging

$

0

I purchased an Inspiron 15 7537 four weeks ago. This afternoon, I noticed some odd behaviour with my laptop's battery notification icon in the taskbar ~

Scenario 1

When laptop is NOT plugged in ~
• Taskbar notification on mouseover says "73% remaining"
• Icon shows battery meter with slight drop in usage
• While I am using the unplugged laptop, the battery meter does not drop from 73%

Scenario 2(a)

When laptop is first plugged in ~
• Taskbar notification on mouseover says "No battery is detected"
• Icon shows a dimmed battery, plug on the left, and a red X

Scenario 2(b)

Approx. 60-90 seconds after laptop has been plugged in ~
• Taskbar notification on mouseover changes to  "73% available (plugged in, not charging)"
• Icon shows regular battery with a plug on the left side with slight drop in usage

Given these three ambiguous notifications, I don't know if it's my battery that is not working as it should or the notifications icon is on the fritz.

All three scenarios occur regardless of whether the AC adapter is plugged directly into the wall or into a power bar/surge protector

I am using the AC adapter that came with the laptop

The LED on/off light is lit in both Scenario 2(a) and 2(b)

I have not removed the battery and reseated it (involves removing four screws and entire bottom panel and, unless push comes to shove, I'm not comfortable doing this)

I have not checked the BIOS for unusual AC adapter messages (as I have read others have done by pressing F3 during the Dell logo display ~ again, not in my comfort zone, but would do so if I had to)

For what this info is worth, I'm using Windows 8.1 and the default Dell power plan. This is what I get after my laptop has been plugged in and in constant use for nine hours ~

Yes, I am aware my laptop is covered for one year, however, I'm hoping for an easy answer or explanation that doesn't involve me having to send a four-week old laptop to Dell Canada for parts replacement.

Any and all advice and insight is appreciated. Thank you.

Need help from Expert !! Inspiron 15R special edition (7520) heating issue

hello,
I have an dell inspiron 15r se and it gets very hot when playing movie or a game. The left side of my laptop and the lower back side gets very hot. And my cpu temp reaching max at 102C and min at 90+.
I know it can be because of dust and stock thermal paste/grease. So I am gonna change the paste and clean it.
I also want to add a notebook cooler below it  and here I want your help. I want to know where are the air vents. Normally laptops take air from vents present below the laptop. Does this laptop also do the same?
It would be a lot helpful if you can add pictures and tag the air vents and how its cooling mechanism.
So that I can find the most suitable cooling pad for my laptop.
And one more question, Which thermal paste would be the best for the laptop : Artic Cooling MX-2 or Cooler Master ThermalFusion 400?
If you know anyone better than this you can also suggest it.

Thanks for reading this post. I hope you will help me as soon as possible.
