Inspiron 7737 Touchscreen and USB root hub gone AWOL

After the latest Windows update my machine restarted to no USB mouse activity. I checked Device Manager and could see that the USB root hub was not functioning so I then proceeded to reuse Windows update and it told me there was an update available for Intel USB hub so I ran this and after another restart and some fiddling (it tried to make me install a USB keyboard driver which I had to uncheck as it kept failing and preventing the mouse driver installing) I got my mouse working again.

However I now have no touchscreen functionality) this is shown as non fuctioning in the device drivers, it also says the transciever for the mouse isn't recognised but as the mouse works I don't really care about this).

In answer to the suspected responses, yes I do have a touchscreen (or rather did have!), yes I do have the latest BIOS, I've run the Dell update and touchsceen doesn't appear as an option for device drivers, no this is 99.999% not a hardware issue unless its unbelievably coincidental with Windows Update and no it did not give me an option to rollback my drivers for any of the devices that stopped working.

How do I get my touchscreen functioning again?

I have a Win 7 Dell XPS 13.  I

t has worked fine for a long time but it refused to completely shht down.

If you click on shut down, it will go thru the visible Win shut down process, but after the screen goes black, the computer does not power off.

It will keep the "on" light lit and the hard drive flashes intermittantly...until eventually the battery goes dead but the screen is black.

I have rebooted in safe mode and it WILL shut down from there normally.  I can't figure out what is hanging it up.

Cooling/Heating on Dell Studio 1558

Hello,

I just received my Dell Studio 1558 two days ago.  So far I have just used it on my desk so it had enough room for ventilation and such.  I've noticed that the keypad/area surrounding is getting very hot, while this laptop is very new to me I had done pretty extensive research before purchasing it.  The dell laptops I've had in the past while they do get hot sometimes, it was never to this high temperature. The reason I'm posting is that I will be taking this laptop off to school with me in about 2 months and it will be traveling to class/library/etc with me and I do not with to have a heat issue.

The specs for my Studio 1558:

i7-820QM, Quad Core CPU

8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, 1GB

500 GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive

I assume from just looking at the outside of the laptop the processor is located directly below the keypad.  Also from reading other reviews from about 6months ago there have been some heating problems, all of which seemed a bit more focused around gaming overheating the laptop though. I've only used the laptop moderately to browse the web and download some programs, no games/word processing/spreadsheets or anything such as that yet.

I will continue using it over the next few days to see if anything changes. If you have any advice or knowledge on this matter I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Sean

XPS 12 carbon outer shell - how to clean it?!

$

I bought a Dell XPS 12 during Thanksgiving from Amazon, sold by Amazon, brand new, not refurbished. I was surprised to find the computer's carbon fiber outer shell pretty stained. I tried my best to clean it off, but nothing worked - nothing made any difference. I tried water, detergent, rubbing alcohol, acetone.
I finally called Amazon and asked for a replacement, which came in just a couple days later (today, 12/9/2013). To my frustration, the replacement machine also had the same types of stains!

I have asked Dell via Facebook (they prompty delete my messages) and Twitter.

I LOVE my XPS - please help me make it look great! How can I clean it?

How can I check my fan status?

I want to know my fan status, change speed, etc.

I tried Speed Fan but it doesnt detect my fans, same with Hwinfo, with I8kfanGUI i cant even install it (I think because of incompatibility).

I read something of some dells have a "secret menu " called a a Thermal Control Panel where you can see your fan status and change its speed, you can access this menu by doing this:

- Press FN + Shift button
- While pressing those buttons press 1, 5, 3, 2, 4
- Release FN and Shift
- Press FN + R

But it doesnt work, any ideas?

Thanks!

Dell Vostro 3555--stuck in "Resuming Windows" --won't load

I have a seldom-used Dell Vostro 3555 laptop running Windows 7--about 2 years old and maybe used 10 times because it runs hot and I don't like it. Anyway, the last time I tried to use it--about 3 weeks ago--when I turned it on, I got the message "Resuming Windows" and Windows never loads...it is just stuck. I ran the system checks and got a message that one of the discs was not conforming...further checking indicated that there was apparently a problem with a Windows Update not loading properly--I did not think to write the message down and will have to do another 40 minute system check to get the exact info that was provided. I thought that I might have some success if I could get the machine to boot up in SAFE MODE but there was no option in the BIOS for SAFE MODE and I could not get PF8 to work. I don't know how I can add to the MSCONFIG with no "Start" button. I am hoping that there are some computer whiz users out there that are far wiser than I am and can offer something that might help. Even though I don't like this laptop, I hate to see it not usable for someone else. Thank You in advance--Kristie.

Dell Inspiron 3537, few problems

$

Hi.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3537 few weeks old. Originaly was Win8, but I update it to Win8.1.

After I registered laptop, next step was to partition my C: partition on two parts, partition C (OS), and D (Data). After that I successfully installed all programs I need. And after few days problems started with few BSoD. There are few problems and I will explain all of them.

My Dell checkup "Blue screen troubleshooter" reporting every few days one or more BSoD with explanation:
"The unknown driver (C:Windows/system32/drivers/atikmdag.sys) appears to have caused a system crash. Complete the tasks below to help prevent unexpected shutdowns in the future."

On same My Dell checkup I try to run "PC Checkup", and everything appear OK, no problems reported. Custom scan on only ATI video card (ATI Radeon HD8850), and result is "Passed".
I also run build in DELL diagnostics (Boot menu) and there was no errors, and also Dell online diagnostics and everything was fine.

I try to install new driver from DELL website (AMD Radeon HD 8850M driver 13.151.0.0), but during installation, screen blinked few times and then went off. I thought that this is OK since video driver was installing. I left Laptop for one hour to "finish installation" but noting happened. I turned off laptop by pressing ON/OFF button for 5 sec, but after that laptop don't want to restart. Here I noticed other problem I will share with you in the moment. Fortunately, I installed Acronis True Image 2014 so I was able to restore a system. BTW, same driver version was already installed acording to "MSINFO32).

Now, my system is running, I can still see BSoD warning  in My Dell Checkup, but actually I don't actually see this BSoD. Strange.
If I right click on desktop and then click on "Graphics Property" or "Configure switchable graphics" I get this warning:

Second problem. During my laptop beforehand explained "BLACKOUT", I tried to use Windows Recovery. I tried "Refresh" and "Reinstall" and both times I got message:

"Could not find the recovery environment. Insert your Windows installation or recovery media, and restart your PC with the media".

If I try to use "Dell Backup and Recovery", I got message:

"Dell Backup and Recovery has not been able to detect the recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted. To recover your computer to the original factory state and restore the Recovery partition, please use your System Recovery Disc." etc...etc...

I don't have any of this discs coz OS was preinstaled. So, basically I can't use any facilities to recover my laptop because I don't have factory recovery media or recovery disc. Fortunately I'm using Acronis, but that's not a point. I want something to recover my system to original, factory state.

Actually, Windows Restore facilities are OK and I can restore to some point I created.

BTW, my hard drive is partitioned on 7 partitions. Originally there were 6 partitions with huge C: partition. I split this one on two.

And also, since this BSoD is likely caused by video driver, how can I safely update this driver. As explained before, after first try I had disaster. Can I try to install new driver for AMD Radeon HD 8850M from ATI site?

Sorry for so long question. If there are any additional questions I will be more than happy to answer them.

Hopefully I will get some answers, thank's in advance!!

Dell Inspiron 15R SE stuck at splash screen

$

Hi all,

For the second time in three months a Dell laptop of mine just freezes at the Dell splash screen. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Dell, but having to keep looking at it when I kinda want to get to work  .... you know what I mean.

So, what happened? Wife boots up the laptop this morning, gets the "disk checking" message and decides after a few minutes that she isn't waiting any longer and does a hard power off (keeping power button pressed). She then tries to boot up the laptop again and .... it won't get past the splash screen.

What I have tried:
1. Pressing F2 for setup
2. Pressing F12 for boot options
3. Opening DVD drive and booting
4. Remove the battery and keep power button pressed to discharge static

Normally, my next option would be to break the warranty seal and just rip out the HDD and try to plug it into another device. But perhaps you all have another solution? Can't imagine that I'm the first one that this happened to.

And FYI: the other laptop that this happened to (Dell Studio XPS M1540) ended up with a useless HDD with unrecoverable data.
