New XPS 13 (9333) Constant Noise

I have just recently received a new XPS 13 with the new haswell i7 processor, 8gb RAM, 256gb ssd, and windows 8.1.

I really like this laptop, but it makes a really bizarre noise. It happens constantly as soon as its powered on, like a high pitched whirring sound from somewhere beneath the keyboard. It also seems pretty inconsistent, like it flickers in frequency, and when you use programs (e.g scroll through webpages) it gets louder.

Can anyone help me with what the issue is here? Any help appreciated.

Blue Screen on boot ...problem with display driver ?

$

I have been using a Dell Inspiron 14R (N4110) laptop since 2010 without any issues.

The Laptop was purchased online from Dell and came with

1) Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and

2) AMD Radeon HD 6470M - 1GB display card.

Recently, I had a problem where my laptop just wouldn't boot up, showing the blue screen everytime it tries to boot up. The Blue screen mentions a problem with the atikmpag.sys file which I understand is the driver for the AMD video card.

If I remove/rename the atikmpag.sys and atikmdag.sys files (through safe boot mode) in C:/windows/system32/drivers, the laptop boots up (no blue screen), but obviously doesn't recognize the display card.

After a lot of unsuccessful debugging tries on my own (including trying to upgrade the display drivers etc.)., I reinstalled the OS and the drivers that came with the original kit (just to remove any possibility of an upgrade gone bad). However, I still see the issue.Sad

Does this mean there is a hardware problem ? or a BIOS issue ?

Thanks,

R.B.

e7240 CONSTANT LOUD NOISE FROM FAN / VENTILATOR TURNING ALL THE TIME

We received 2 brand new E7240s directly from Dell, one for myself and one for my colleague. As soon as I turned it on to build it for my colleague, I noticed the machine was overheating and the fan was making a noise. Dell suggested a BIOS upgrade which didn't change anything. They then changed the heatsink, again this changed nothing and since then they changed the motherboard. My colleague has gone on holiday so I don't know if her issue has been resolved, however, my laptop from day one does not overheat (as obviously as it did for my colleague) BUT THE FAN TURNS ALL THE TIME. So much so that I think the person in the upstairs bedroom is using her hairdryer. Dell replaced the heatsink and the motherboard yesterday, I have done the same BIOS upgrade and the problem is even worse. As soon as I switch the thing on, the ventilator turns all the time making a loud noise. My previous model was the E6500 and I wasn't bothered by any noises it made.

The 7240 makes so much noise that I want to throw it out of the window Super Angry , seriously I am going to switch back to my 5 year old e6500 which is now very slow, I just can't take the constant hair dryer noise from the fan! I am waiting for Dell to get back to me but I don't see what else they can do.

I suspect there is a design problem with newer models, someone with a Latitude 13 Notebook has also mentioned it on the forums, also someone else with an e7240 states "I have noticed the fan running much of the time - it's quiet but you're aware it's spinning.  I am just setting it up though, so the CPU is fairly busy." A person with the e6320 states "And the fan is loud and turns itself on way too often".

Hi,

The battery on my Inspiron 1525  has finally died and I'm looking for a replacement. The original battery was a GW240 and rated at 14.8v, I've been told a X284G 10.8V battery will be a suitable replacement, but before I make the purchase id like to know if the replacement battery voltage has to be the same as the original?

Kind regards,

Terry.

Inspiron N5010 Motherboard/Chip level replacement.

I have a Dell N5010 with 1GB Radeon 550v graphics, which is a well known model(family) with heating issues. Recently I had noticed few artifacts whenever I play videos or use applications that use GPU and they started increasing overtime. Yesterday I fired up dell video diagnostics a couple of times and my  laptop died. Now on starting it gives 8 beeps at regular intervals and it fails to start. I have confirmed that it is my GPU which got damaged rather than a problem with the LCD by connecting to an external monitor.

I called up Dell representatives today and got a price of 11000 INR quoted for the repair, which I think is on the higher side. Does Dell provide chip level replacement for only the GPU to reduce the costs? Have others facing similar problems found some alternatives, in or around Mumbai?

@#iworkfordell: Can someone provide an simple explanation on what the repair covers? Are there any hidden costs above the quoted price viz. transportation, part prices, etc. The quote has terms like "Golden part replacement required" which I was not able to understand. The quote also mentions that for 17999 INR, we get "1 Year In-Home Hardware Services after Remote Diagnosis + Premium Phone Support", is it equivalent to 1 year of warranty extension + the current repair?

Laptop shuts off unexpectedly and not overheating

I have a Dell inspiron 6400 laptop. I recently opened it up and cleaned everything inside slowly and carefully including the fan and around the openings. After that I formatted my hard drive, and installed windows 7 (it was already running windows 7, just a routine format). Since then, every time i turn it on, after about a minute, it freezes for 30 seconds, and then continues to work fine, but whenever the batter is in place, regardless of whether the power cord is connected, the computer instantly shuts off whenever im doing more than 2 things at a time, even as small as multiple tabs on the browser, and its not hot at all. and the weird thing is that if i take out the battery, and its only connected to the power cord, it still freezes for a bit, but wont shut off. How does that make sense?

also, before the format, my hard drive contained 2 visible drives, C: and D:, each containing about 100 GB. but after the format, a new drive showed up, E:, containing only 25 GB. could this be connected?

XPS 16 not booting

When I turn on my XPS16 the screen stays black, the keyboard lights up, for the media buttons: the mute led lights up solid and both volume up and down leds start blinking. After about 20 seconds the system powers itself off again.
No beeps at all.

Couldn't find a similar problem on this forum.
Any thoughts what the error code means?
Or where to find documentation/manual about the meaning of the blinking lights?

When I do the LCD test (hold D while pressing power and release at the same time) the sceen lights up shortly, just black no colors.

Latitude C600 Hard Drive Installation and Partioning

I recently installed a 40GB Hard Drive in a relative's laptop that had been given to them without one. I followed all of the steps in the service manual to properly install the hard drive. I also made sure the hard drive is securely in place before plugging in the power cord and turning it on. When I turn it on a I get a boot error and it shows the hard drive is not recognized.

What are all of the necessary steps to properly install and and manually partition the hard drive before I can install a Linux OS?

XPS 15 9530 - Noise problem?

Hi all,

I just got my new XPS 15, amazing laptop but there's 1 big problem,

A high-pitched scratching/screeching noise is produced from the power button area ONLY when the power is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

I've seen other forums and others have exactly the same problem, Any ideas?

I found this example http://z.mk/e6vq , the power is plugged into the laptop at 6 seconds.

Thanks

Inspiron (7720) Boot from mSATA Instructions

$

Purchased an Inspiron 17R Special Edition (7720) this week to replace my beloved old Inspiron 5100 that died last Thursday after nine years of being the best computer I ever owned.  Decided to upgrade the 32GB mSATA chip to a 128GB and use that as the OS drive, reserving the 1TB HDD for storage because running exclusively from the mSATA is much faster than using it as cache for the platter.

As has been discussed on the dozens of threads (here and elsewhere) that I've read today, the Dell BIOS does not recognize the mSATA as bootable, either from UEFI or legacy.  So, editing out the dead ends I went down, here's what I did to get it to work:

1. Acquire new mSATA drive.  Mine is a Crucial m4 128GB.  (I don't know whether or not the rest of this would work with the default 32GB board, but 32GB is awfully small for a modern OS.)

2. Acquire a Windows 8 install DVD.  (That Dell doesn't include this with the package is the only complaint I have about my purchase.  OS install media should ALWAYS be included with an OEM PC.  A-l-w-a-y-s.)

3. Flip over the laptop, remove the battery, remove the bottom cover (just 2 screws, well done, Dell).  Now, remove the 1TB HDD (4 screws, but slides out easily) and set it aside.  Then replace the existing 32GB mSATA drive with your new, larger mSATA drive (1 screw).  I have a 128GB, but it should work just as well with a 64GB or 256GB.  Replace the cover and battery.  At this point, both of the regular SATA slots should be empty.

4. Boot the PC, hitting F2 to go to BIOS.  Insert your Windows 8 (or 7, this should work with Windows 7 as well) DVD.  Go to "Advanced" and set SATA Operations from Intel Smart Response to AHCI.  Go to "Boot", set Secure Boot to Disabled.  Then set Load Legacy Option Run to Enabled.

5. Move CD/DVD/CD-RW-Drive above Hard Drive under the new Legacy Boot menu.  Push F10 to save and exit.

6. Your PC should now boot from the Windows 8 DVD in the drive (NOTE: you should also be able to do this with a USB stick, provided it's formatted properly).  Follow the on-screen installation process to install Windows 8 to the mSATA drive.  Once installation is complete, you should get left at the Windows desktop.  Shut down the PC.  (NOTE: I tried this with the HDD still inside, but it was Disk 0 and the SSD was Disk 1, and my Windows DVD would only install to Disk 0, so I strongly recommend removing the HDD before you try installing Windows on the mSATA SSD.)

7. Once again, remove the battery and back cover.  Replace the 1TB HDD drive in the primary SATA slot from which you removed it in Step 3.  Replace back cover and battery.

8. Boot the PC from your Windows 8 DVD again.  On the Windows 8 partition setup screen, delete all of the existing partitions (there's like six of them) on Disk 0 (the 1TB HDD).  Install Windows to the newly blank drive.  You should also see, as Disk 1, your mSATA SSD, ignore it for now.

9. The PC will restart and should leave you at a Windows desktop running off of the HDD.  Go to Computer (just type that into the search option on the "Charms" on the right side of the screen in Windows 8), you'll see three drives, the one you're on, the system recover drive on the mSATA SSD, and the primary partition on the mSATA SSD.  Note the drive letter of the primary partition on the SSD.  Mine was E:\, but yours may be different.  You can verify that it's the right one because of the amount of disk space available.

10. Download an install EasyBCD:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/EasyBCD.shtml

11. Launch EasyBSD.  Click the "Add New Entry" icon.  Set the name to "SSD" or something similar, and set the drive to the primary partition on your SSD.  (Again, mine was E:\.)  Click Add Entry.

12. On the left side of EasyBSD, click Edit Boot Menu.  You should see two entries, one for "Windows 8" or something similar, and one for "SSD" (or whatever you named it in Step 11.)  Delete the one that says "Windows 8" so that the only entry is the one you just created, "SSD" in this example.  Save the settings.

13. Eject the Windows 8 DVD from your PC.

14. Restart.  (If you'd like, you can push F2 to return to the BIOS and set Hard Drive above the CD/DVD/CD-RW-Drive in the Legacy Boot order.)

15. Your PC should now boot directly to the Windows 8 install on your mSATA SSD drive.  To verify this, go back to Computer, you should see three drives, your OS C:\ drive with 100GB or so free (on a 128 GB drive), a "System Reserved" drive (on the HDD at 350MB), and the much larger primary partition (also on the HDD).  You can go to Control Panel | System and Security | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Disk Management and delete the primary partition on the HDD.  (Always best to leave System Reserved alone, especially since it's a paltry 350MB.)  Once the primary partition is removed, you can use the rest of that roomy 1TB drive for whatever you like.

That's it.  You now have a single copy of Windows running on your mSATA drive which your PC will boot automatically and the main HDD for storage.

SUMMARY: Yes, this process involves installing Windows twice, first on the mSATA drive and then again on the HDD.  But since the Dell BIOS won't show the mSATA drive in the boot order, you need the boot partition on the HDD to tell the computer to boot from the mSATA SSD.  With EasyBSD it's just a few clicks to tell the boot record on the HDD (which does appear in the BIOS boot options) to boot from the mSATA SSD (which does not appear in the BIOS boot options).

NOTE: I do not know that this is an optimal procedure, for speed, security or anything else.  I do know that it will work.  If you want a clean, no bloatware install of Windows 8 running off of the mSATA drive on this model laptop, the above should do that for you.

Dell Latitude D 520 flashing screen?

Hi,

Just took delivery of a used D 520. I left it on for several hours to put it through its paces. Seemed a-ok. Then went to do a google search and the screen started flashing, like bright (normal) to dull (greyish). Also noticed the charger brick was hot, very hot.

I unplugged the charger unit and the flashing stopped, but the screen went straight to dull, as if in power-saving mode, and it had a full charge.

Any ideas please? Have I bought a lemon?

Thanks

Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

Just got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 16 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; updated the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.

Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.

At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.

Can anybody help with this?
