My screen doesn't wake up after PC sleep mode under Windows 7. It used to work well a while ago.
My Video Card is XPS 15 (L502X) running Windows 7 and  GeForce GT 540M. Driver version is 9.18.13.3788.
Any idea what that could be ?
Thanks for your help.

Dell XPS 12 (Haswell i5, 9Q33) won't shutdown, UNLESS the power button is held for 5 seconds

HI everyone.

A few days ago I received a Dell XPS 12, bought from the Dull Outlet store online, and it simply won't shut down unless I force a hard shutdown by holding the power button for a few seconds.

It came with Windows 8 installed, and had the issue then. I installed the 8.1 update from the Windows Store, and the problem persists.

If I click the button to 'Shut Down' the laptop says 'Shutting Down...' on screen (as you'd expect!) then the screen turns off, the keyboard backlight fades out, and the fan shuts off. Is stays this way for a few seconds as if it really is shut down, but then without fail it immediately comes back to life and powers on.

I've had issues in the past with various PC's not sleeping, and waking from sleep because of WakeOnLan settings etc, but they were always sleep issues, not shutdown issues. I've never known a PC to wake it's self from a full shut down before! Is this likely to be a hardware issue?

I've tried all manner of fixes I've found online over the last few days but nothing at all helps.

I've...

  • used Windows 8 'Reset/Refresh PC' feature reset it to the factory settings
  • turned off all hardware options which to 'allow this device to wake' etc
  • turned off WOL and WoWLAN
  • updated all the drivers to their latest versions
  • made sure all WIndows updates are installed
  • all the CMD 'powercfg' tips and tricks I found
  • turned off all syncing and skydrive features etc
  • reset the BIOS, updated the BIOS
  • even tried a random tip to disable IPv6 in the network card settings
  • Disabled all Homegroup sharing

Nothing works! There is no clean way to turn off the machine.

I'd rather not have to send it back to Dell and get it fixed, but it is well within it's warranty so that might be the only fix?

The one thing I've not tried is removing the CMOS battery, which some folks way works, but that would involved voiding the warranty wouldn't it?

If anyone has any other suggestions or has managed to fix a similar problem, I'd love to find out how you fixed it!

Thanks a lot,

Rich

Inspiron 15 R -- wireless adapter problem

Dell laptop Inspiron 15-R 5537 - N 7260 wireless adapter. Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1. Motherboard model 0845 MX. Intel i5 proc. RAM: 6GB. HD: 500.1 GB.

1. This laptop was purchased 12/10/13 and is still under warranty.

2. A Touchpad defect finally led to the Touchpad's replacement by Dell. In the meantime, I had no use of the laptop. I used an older laptop instead without problem for much of my work. Both the Dell and the older HP laptop, AND two desktop PC's in our home, are all connected to the same wireless network, and there are no problems with Internet connectivity or access with the other three computers.

3. Following replacement of the Dell Touchpad, I powered up the Inspiron 15R, and another problem immediately occurred. It involves the wireless adapter and access to the Internet. Initially, I was able to access the Internet, but then would begin seeing "limited access" error messages on screen, and the Internet stopped working. That is, commands from the browser had no effect. And the Windows "busy icon" circle kept busy. If I remained on that page or screen, nothing further would happen.

But then I would try to go to another Internet page. A blank full-screen would appear on the display monitor, bearing the message, "Cannot Connect to the Internet."

4. I would then Exit, click on Start | Control Panel | Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Center | Connect to a Network. A drop-down menu would appear showing all wireless networks in our neighborhood. My network, Aglow--- showed a message, "Limited Access."

[IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND: All throughout this process, two other computers in my home were connected simultaneously to the same network -- one just six feet from the Inspiron 15-R -- and were actively logged onto to Internet normally, with no problems or error messages. That suggests the Inspiron 15-R problem does =NOT= involve our D-Link router or the access point.]

5. I next would click on the "limited access" message displayed by the Aglow--- network ID. An option would appear: "Disconnect." I would click on that. After the disconnection, I would click on the Aglow201 network identifier again. This time, a "Connect" option would appear. But clicking on Connect resulted in a failure to connect, and a message from Windows 7 offering an option to Run the troubleshooter.

6. When the troubleshooter was done, in 20 of 22 recent incidents tested, it flashed a message, "Fixed." It included details of what Windows had found in troubleshooting various components. It identified the source of the problem as the "wireless adapter." It said it had "reset" the adapter. I could reconnect to the Internet after that, only to have the disconnection cycle randomly begin again at some point.

7. TROUBLING DISCOVERY -- CONFUSION AS TO WHICH WIRELESS ADAPTER IS ACTUALLY INSTALLED! :

The Windows network troubleshooter (official title: "Windows Network Diagnostics") ALWAYS identified the wireless adapter as Intel Wireless N - 7260, in accord with the Dell Inspiron-R specifications, and "Version 16.1.31." So did Windows systeminfo.exe.

I went to the Intel website to explore what troubleshooting options might be there for its wireless adapter. There was an option to have Intel sniff the laptop and identify the installed wireless adapter. It identified the adapter as an Intel. Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 Intel PROSet/Wireless "Version 16.1.3.0"!

My understanding is that the N 7260 and the AC 7260 are two different devices!

I've posted a query about this seeming confusion over in the Intel support forum.

8. Is there a solution to this wireless connectivity problem on my Inspiron 15R 5537?

Warranty issues

I have a dell laptop for two years, the warrant will expire next Aug. Recently, it fail to boot. So i took it to a dell authorized repair person. He spent a few hours to check it up and told me that he found there are dust and debris(like hair) inside the laptop and the CPU fan did not work and that cause the motherboard and CPU overheating. The CPU and motherboard need to be replaced. The bad thing is that it will not be covered by warranty as he think the laptop has been misused. I think this is ridiculous. How can you expect a two years old laptop so clean without any dust and debris? I use it for normal work everyday.
Anyone could give me some suggestions?

Thanks.

Inspiron 1545 problems with programs working after click similar to sleep mode

Hello,

I've had my Inspiron 1545 since 2009 and it's a investment for a first laptop with the lack of problems and longevity of the device.  Yesterday after I had updated my antivirus software I had noticed it was on even though the screen was shut so I opened and closed it to let it go back to sleep.  Today when I logged on everything booted up okay, but when I began to try using my programs (Google Chrome, Word, etc.) I noticed a clicking noise similar to that when it would hibernate/sleep and when I tried to click the Windows logo on the bottom left nothing happened so I forced a shutdown.  Tried the normal login again with the same result and same clicking a minute or so after everything booted up.  Forced shutdown again and attempted several system restores from the safe mode only to have them all fail.  I'm running diagnostics on it now and just received an Error Code 2000-0142 saying the hard drive self test was unsuccessful (could be irrelevant to my problem or could have everything to do with it).  If anyone has any advice or further questions that might help my situation would be great.

Thanks

Amber Light on Studio 1558 - wont come on

I recently replaced the power button cable on my Studio 1558 because my laptop failed to start due to the cable ripping off the button. Got a new cable, installed it, now my laptop wont start and I am getting an amber light right at the light that would show white if the laptop is charging or on. After replacing the cable thought maybe the cable was defective so to be on the safe side, I purchase another new cable and start button. However once I got everything hooked up, my laptop still does not come on, I only get an amber light. The battery is supposedly fully charged tried 2 different power supplies in case one was not working right anymore, and allowed the laptop to sit overnight plugged in, still wont come on and I just get an amber light. Is there a chance I could of fried something when I replaced the defective cable with something else?

This model is advertised to come with Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 2x2 B wireless adapter. I have upgraded the OS to Windows 8.1 and have the latest driver (16.6.0.8). However, I cannot see any 5GHz wifi networks. Does this adapter support 5GHz (I thought it did given the description from Intel) but wanted to check here first.

Dell inspiron 1721 power up issue

Hello folks.  My laptop had stopped powering up.  The dell screen never appears.   I have tried holding the Drinks key with the power button and the screen changes colors.  Holding the [fn] key and power does not seem to do anything.   The blue power light does come on for a few seconds as the hard drive starts to spin up then seems to make a "tink" sound and it shuts down.   F8 & f12 don't do anything.  Any ideas?

DELL17R SE 7720 how to replace/clone theHD

$

I just received a replacement Hard Drive ( 1TB) from Dell because my current hard drive is showing signs of a possible failure ( I hear a clicking sound evey now and then ) . The laptop is currently in a working status and thus I am plananing to clone the current HD to the new one. THis  is what I am planning to do :

1) Use an USB 3.0 hard drive enclosure to connect the replacement hard drive to the laptop via the USB 3.0  port.

2) run the Disk Clone utility of AOMEI Backupper 2.0 Standard program using the sector-to sector option to back up my Disk0

3) replace the current hard drive with the newly cloned one

Would I then be able to just reboot the laptop and work on the new HD !?!?!?

My only concern is the SSD drive that is used for caching purposes. Should I do something before I reboot the laptop with the new hard drive, or the "new" cache will be rebuilt automatically, if needed.

Thanks for your support,

Laptop keyboard and touchpad not working on windows boot

The keyboard with the Dell Inspiron N5110 and the touch pad do not work after the windows logo appears on screen. On opening the device manager, it shows an exclamation mark on the standard PS/2 standard keyboard and says that windows could not load the file for that device (error code 039). However, an external mouse works fine when connected through USB port. I did a system restore and then it began to work fine. However, when I shut down the system and opened it after 2 hours, the keyboard was not working again. So, I did a system restore again. This is very painful as I am currently working on a very important project and doing system restore is just taking away the time and it is definitely not the solution. Thanks for any help in advance.

Inspiron 15, 3537, Windows® 7 Professional compatible printers

Hello there. I just purchased the above laptop that is supposed to be shipped on July 1. I am finding out that other manufacturers printers seem to be not compatile with Dell so I guess I am going to need to purchase another inkjet printer. I currently have an HP Desktop 2050 and am finding that it does not run on my current Dell Latitude E6410 that I started using full-time after my HP crashed and burned.. After installing, the HP 2050, it is showing as my default printer, but when I hit the print buutton, nothing happens. The print job status shows nothing is pending. Does anyone know if I can get this to print from my current laptop and also on the new one I just ordered? Both are Windows 7. If it is not possible for my current HP printer to work, then can you tell me of a compatible All-in-One Inkjet printer that will run on Windows 7? I am willing to buy a used one as funds are tight right now. I was considering canceling my order for the new Dell, but it is showing as "In Production" and I guess one can't cancel the order at this point in the process.

Thanks to anyone that can help me.

Plz help! Inspiron N5010 no or limited wireless access

First of all let me start off by saying I am clueless as far as computers and hardware/software, drivers etc. , so if anyone has any suggestions, please be gentle and explain in very simple terms :) My problem is, my computer will not work wirelessly. When I connect the Ethernet cable, I am able to go online but that is it. The icon in the bottom right sometimes has the yellow exclamation point and says Limited Access, other times it will show that I am connected until I try to access the internet. I have Comcast for my internet provider and after a very long call with tech support, came to the conclusion that the problem is with my computer. I then called Dell and due to no warranty got no assistance. Also, in case it is relevant, I checked my network drivers (not sure how I even found them to check) and it says they are working fine. I purchased this laptop with Windows 7 but have upgraded it to Windows 8.1. I was going to do a factory reset but am afraid I will go back to Windows 7 if I do that so if someone, anyone can help me get online wirelessly I will be truly grateful! Thanx in advance Janell

Dirty touchpad on XPS 15 9530

I have recently bought a Dell XPS 15 9530 and came into actual possession of it about 10 ten ago.  I am very satisfied with the laptop, it is gorgeous and it works great.  But there is one problem:  the touchpad looks as if it has been used for at least 1 year...it has fingerprints that seem impossible to clean and it gets worse by the every hour of use.  Is there any way to clean the pad without destroying it?  I am afraid to use alcohol on it due to previous bad experiences with older laptops. Thank you!

Intel Rapid start problem

Hi guys,

I recently upgraded my ram from 6GB to 8 GB (2x4GB) in order to have dual channel. Now everything seems to be working fine except but a message at boot that says "Intel Rapid Start Technology does not seem to be enabled" or something of the sort.

Now the strange part is that I do feel RS to be working, because boot times are as fast before. I tried a method I found on the forum on how to re-enable to hybernation partition but the message still appears.

Is there a way to get it to work again without reinstalling whole windows? Something I hate about working with RAID configurations is that they are a pain to work with.
