Hi everyone, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron M5040 and I use Windows 7. Today I've had several problems with my computer that just don't seem to add up, and I'd like some suggestions on what to do. These problems include:

A blue screen error about IRQL being not less or equal

Following this, a second blue screen error stating 'interruption acception not handled' that completely shut down my computer.

When I tried to turn on my computer after this, it wouldn't come on for about an hour. After about the 20th try, it suddenly came back on and said it had recovered successfully from the problem BUT now the battery is plugged in but not charging. It's currently on 17% and will dwindle down pretty quickly if it's not plugged in. I've had no problems with the charger before. I've checked the BIOS (I have the 2011 one), and it says the adapter is working fine.

Please help me with any suggestions, I'd be happy to read them! :) Steph

I have had my new XPS 15 for 4 days now, and overall it is a very impressive machine. I got the mid-range one (with 1TB HDD). However, I would like to let the community know about some issues I am having, and to post publicly that this particular machine is shipping with a flawed setup.

My model comes with 16GB system memory. It has a 32GB mSATA drive intended to be used for Intel Rapid Start and Intel Rapid Storage. The mSATA is partitioned with 8GB for Intel Rapid Start and 22GB for Intel Rapid Storage. Consequently, Intel Rapid Start does not work on the midrange XPS 15 9530.. I noticed this because it starts slower than my old Inspiron 15 with its Crucial SSD.

Unfortunately, one cannot fix this by repartitioning the mSATA. If you dedicate 16GB on the mSATA to Intel Rapid Start, only 14GB remain for Intel Rapid Storage, which requires a minimum of 18.6 GB to work.

Dell needs to ship this model with a larger mSATA for both technologies to work.

Now I really would not care personally, as my intention was to recycle my 512GB Crucial M4 as a boot drive by performing a clean Windows install on it. This would allow me to dedicate the entire mSATA to Intel Rapid Start. Unfortunately, this system does not ship with Windows Install disks. And I can't seem to order one as Dell's system does not recognize my Service Tag. I've tried to use the factory reinstallation disks I made to reinstall on my SSD, but they won't let me reinstall to a smaller drive. I could destroy the final 6.96 recovery partition, shrink the main partition, and then clone the drive with Clonezilla, but my intention was to keep the original disk as backup, and the SSD would not be aligned properly.

Another issue I had was the McAfee firewall that came preinstalled prevented me from setting a second network to private. I uninstalled this after failing to find a solution. Windows Defender seems to be adequate antivirus, and its much easier to set the 2nd network to private with Windows firewall.

Overall I am very happy with my new computer, but I don't think I'll be really happy until I can switch back to SSD. I may solve this by ordering a 1TB Samsung EVO, but that puts me up to the price point of the top XPS 15 9530, and I didn't want to go there. And I would still have the alignment issue if I clone the drive. So hopefully my service tag will get recognized soon allowing me to order Windows reinstallation disks.

I've had this laptop for about 2 weeks now.  My first problem was documented here and resolved after Dell replaced the touchpad:

Since I've had the computer, I've been having trouble during start-up (usually from Sleep mode).  Occasionally the laptop won't fire-up again and I'll get the following error:  "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION"

Is this something that is normal for Windows 8.1 laptops?!  The notification then said that the laptop had to rubuild its "metadata"... This has now probably happened about a dozen times since I've had the laptop.

I was not happy with the fact that I needed to get new hardware installed after having the laptop for two days.... and I'm certainly not happy about the probelms with start-up.  Honestly, for the price I paid for this thing ($2K+), it should run flawlessly.  

A secondary problem happened this morning... the touch screen stopped working.  Admitedly, the laptop was running hot due to inadequate ventilation, but should that cause the touchscreen to stop working?  It fixed itself after I rebooted.

Please help.

Bought 2 inspiron 17rs in october of 2012. Both of them are having problems that I cant figure out and it seems no one else is having that I can find online. At random times the entire screen will show colored lines and not do anything, forcing a hard restart. This has been happening since the first week. Thought maybe it was a driver issue so I updated everything and it still happens. Has any one else had this happen or have any idea what it causing it. My wife is in college and has to do a lot of work on her computer, and when this happens she loses anything she has been working on.

First off, if anyone is reading this and considering buying a Dell laptop, I suggest you reconsider. Their customer service department is truly the worst that I've ever dealt with.  But maybe there are some non-Dell employees reading this who can help me...

My touchscreen stopped working a week after I bought my Inspiron 17 7737. For a while it only worked after a restart, but stopped working once the computer slept and woke up. Now it doesn't work at all.

I have also been getting a recurring error message, "USB device not recognized" as though I am repeatedly trying to connect a new device.

I don't know much about hardware but it seems as if the computer is reading the touchsceeen input as a USB device and not recognizing it.

I have done a full system reboot, reset BIOS, downloaded all Microsoft updates. Still no luck.

Has anyone else had this problem? I imagine there must be a simple fix.

I have 17r-5721 laptop that I got new in march 2013. when I go to start it most of the time it doesn't start light stays on and there is a constant ticking sound. Push button and the light goes off and ticking stops. It does this most of the time, it does start once in a while and works fine then. Ive been told its the mother board. It should last longer than 14mo. I don't see where Dell sells them.

Hello,

for the last few days i have encountered some issues with my laptop. Almost a week ago while i was using spotify, watching youtube, talking on skype and playing League of Legends all of the sound went dead except for the spotify program. Even the system sounds were gone. After a restart it all seemed to have dissapeared.

Yesterday and today i had a different problem but thought maybe these two were linked. Both times i was playing League of Legends and my laptop just started making a sharp beeping sound in about half a second intervals. I could use my keyboard but not the mouse. If i tried to click the mouse it seemed to make the beeping more frequent. The mouse cursor started lagging altogether with the beeping and seemed to move in sync. Only restarting my laptop helped to solve this issue. The windows loading was really really slow and seemed to take around 3 minutes. Usually it takes around 1 minute to load windows. Can anyone help me because it really starts to pile up.

Hi, guys... I'm trying to fix an Inspiron 1440 PP42L for a friend of mine. The hard drive is completely dead, so I'm going to replace it. It was a 500GB drive, but I was wondering if I could up it to a 1TB drive. Would this system support a 1TB? I just want to make sure before I go and purchase a new drive.

 

I can't seem to find this specific info anywhere, so I really appreciate any help. Thank you!

I've had my Dell Inspiron for less than 18 months. I've barely had the time to enjoy it. Today, I started the laptop and it says "automatic repairs" then the screen turns black. I shut the laptop down properly everytime and haven't downloaded anything on it (other than pictures). Is a driver toast ? I do not have a recovery disk and find it odd that I would need to use one a pretty much brand new computer. Any suggestions?

i bought an Inspiron 7737  about 2 weeks ago, works perfectly,windows 81.

My question is about my keyboard getting hot at the middle of the keyboard, this only happens on Second life, other than that its usually slightly warm.

I ran a Real temp on it and it shows temps 45C    44C    Distance to max  45C     46C 

                                                                     GPU   53C

The temperatures were taken while on Second Life, i know they look ok, my other one ( toshiba) used to run about 60C on Second Life

Even though the Temps seem good why would the keyboard get so hot, i have never noticed that on all the laptops i have owned, ( Toshiba, HP, and another HP ) i have used a laptop on Second Life since 2006 staying on many ours while creating clothes and setting up shops , but not once have i experienced a hot keyboard.

As i said this only happens on Second Life.

Is this normal ?

Hi guys, I got an E7440 (not the touch).  It has the 500GB 5400 hard drive and nothing in the mSata slot.  Can I buy an mSata drive and use that as my boot drive and use the HDD as a secondary drive?  If that's possible I am thinking about cloning the HDD to the mSata drive make a change in the bios so that it boots from the mSata and then format the HDD.  Is my thinking safe?  Thanks.

I have an Inspiron N5050. The "d" stopped working. I took the key off and cleaned it out. But it still doesn't work. Occasionally when I press the "s" key hard or repeatedly, it'll trigger the "d" key.  Also if I take the key cover off the "d" and press hard it'll spam the screen til I hit another key. Then for random amount of time after, it'll start showing up randomly while im typing. Also, no other key surrounding "d" will trigger it like "s" will. I have tried restoring the system, shut it down and take the battery out. Even put in the windows7 disc and tried a file check/repair. Any other thing I can do? Or will I have to replace the keyboard?

I purchased a dell espiron 15R about a year ago and it now has some small white lines across the top of the screen.  They are about an inch total...line 20 or so of them.  My son doesn't complain but to me it seems like that's a problem.  Heard it could be a driver...not too sure as I am not the most savvy tech person on the planet.  He plays a lot of games on it.

Any of you folks have an idea what it could be.  Besides that it runs like a well oiled machine...errr lapton.

I have a XPS 12 and really haven't had any problems. Today because of a thunderstorm, power can on and off. Since then my system has been slow. I've had this once before but couldn't remember the circumstance that may have caused it. Laptop was plugged into a surge protector. However, my laptop is slow to start up, every application and browser slow to load to operates slow, and includes any administrative programs and processes like loading or opening the event viewer. I ran memory diagnostics with no errors. Ran a disk scan without errors. There isn't anything in event view that shows errors. Also ran virus checks and found nothing. Any clues I would appreciate it.

My laptop is hanging up in the windows log on screen. One thing I noticed it that the "Windows Mobility Center" button/led no longer flashes on boot up. Does anyone know what this indicates? The other leds to the right Dell Support Center and Display on/off seem to flash as they did before.

hi

i'm trying to restore my xps 15 using dell datasafe local backup but after my laptop restarts it has an error message saying WINDOWS FAILED TO START, INSERT WINDOWS INSTALLTION DISC AND RESTART COMPUTER.

i tried to uninstall datasafe local backup but it came up with c++ runtime error so i had to install revo uninstaller to delete it. but reinstalling datasafe local backup comes up with the same problem

i also tried installing this dell backup and recovery manager but that fails to install

i think there might be something wrong with the recovery system, any help would be greatly appreciated
