Dell Studio 1558 - Graphics Card Switching

Hi,

I have Dell Studio 1558 having 4 GB RAM, Intel i5-460M processor and ATI 545v graphics card. Since recent past, I've faced critical hardware issue which caused my laptop to crash in middle of something and never goes UP then after. I can see the power LED on, CPU FAN is ON, HDD and USB ports alive and even DVD drive is also live, though I cannot see anything on the screen other than darkness. It means my screen only goes blank.

I've analysed this with one of the dell expert and came to know that it is a graphics card memory issue, which needs motherboard replacement as my card is integrated and cannot be replaced individually.

Also I came to know that the onboard process of my processor i5-460M (click to see spec), already has Onboard Intel HD graphics which is disabled because my laptop has ATI card.

I want to ask experts over here on this community weather I can do something that can enable Intel HD graphics and disable ATI graphics ? In simple words, switching between Onboard graphics and ATI graphics. Is it possible to do so ?

Thanks

STMicro AccelerometerP11 update error

Was updating drivers on an e6420 (Win7U) using Dell's auto detect/install. One driver repeatedly failed - the ST Microelectonics Accelerometer (Fall Protection). I manually downloaded the driver package both the msi and the zip packages. Both produce the same error message: "found incompatible installation of, Version. Please uninstall it via the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs before installing this version of Accelerometer". However, the driver/program is already uninstalled - no entry in CP, no STMicro folders, no uninstall data that I can find - only a freefallprotection.log in the root folder. The log does not contain any entries other than my current failed installs. Help!

Dell inspiron 15 7000 touch screen problem

Hey There,

I bought my laptop from three months,
At first, The touch screen was working well with no problems.

And after a week it stopped working, (I don't know way, maybe the windows 8.1 update or else)

And since then, It sometimes works and other times don't work.

When it doesn't work, It isn't detected at all in my drivers, or in the human interface section, It seems like it has never been there ever (not even yellow marks or announcements that there is a problem in it, it just disappears and the touch screen don't work).

And other times it works and the driver appears normally in the human interface section in my drivers.

So, What is the problem & how to fix ?!7

Thanks in advance !

Hello, I've been experiencing the 8 beeps with no display problem with my Dell laptop (N5010), and tried pretty much every piece of advice I could find online, and none of it worked. I tried plugging in an external monitor - both with the HTML and VGA ports, and then also tried pressing F1 with the start button -- no good. I tried pulling and resetting the memory chips, and the VGA display connectors. I tried removing the battery and pressing the start button 15 second to remove the excess power. Please advise.

New XPS 13 (9333) Constant Noise

I have just recently received a new XPS 13 with the new haswell i7 processor, 8gb RAM, 256gb ssd, and windows 8.1.

I really like this laptop, but it makes a really bizarre noise. It happens constantly as soon as its powered on, like a high pitched whirring sound from somewhere beneath the keyboard. It also seems pretty inconsistent, like it flickers in frequency, and when you use programs (e.g scroll through webpages) it gets louder.

Can anyone help me with what the issue is here? Any help appreciated.

BIOS asks for password after resetting BIOS settings to default

Hi,

Can somebody help with providing me with the BIOS password for my Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop? I asked before here on this forum but now I am a registered owner of this laptop (it took over 2 months to do it) so I can provide computer's service tag, the snapshot of the error message, name registered during the system ownership transfer and an email address...

Many thanks,

Dell XPS 12 Unable to boot any OS, stuck at windows 8 loading logo.

I am putting this in the forums to hopefully save some other poor person the troubles I had troubleshooting with my Dell XPS 12 Laptop.

Symptoms: Unable to load windows 8, unable to load windows repair, Unable to load windows 8 installer DVD, unable to boot into Linux, Unable to load Linux live CDs or USB sticks, unable to even use an MSdos boot USB.

Problem just appeared one day, one month out of my 1 year warranty so I began troubleshooting myself. After replacing the SSD, Motherboard, and unplugging every single cable, even disassembling the display and disconnecting the Windows button, Webcam, and touchscreen cables. Still I Could not get any OS to boot. On a whim I powered on the laptop them promptly disconnected the daughter board and sure enough my OS booted right away. Upon further inspection I learned that the Auto-rotate or rotate lock button had become stuck/damaged due to a fall or hard bump. I ripped off the button and ordered a new daughter board online and all is well now.

My only hope is that someone with similar symptoms may find this and avoid the many, many hours of troubleshooting I spent for such a simple fix.

XPS 12-9Q33 Blue Screen - SynTP.sys

I've got an XPS 12-9Q33 just 10 days old and it crashes/blue screens regularly when I flip the screen from laptop to tablet mode. The screen moves only about 2 or 3" and the blue screen pops up. The error is "attempted execute of no execute memory" and the driver listed is SynTP.sys - the touchpad driver. The crash does not happen everytime I flip the screen, probably 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 times. It only happens when the screen is flipped and happens right after the screen moves. Since it is easy to accidently move/unlatch the screen I find the computer crashing 2 or 3 times per day. Rather annoying.

I've uninstalled the existing driver and re-installed it. I've also tried to install the latest driver directly from Synaptic's website but it won't install with a generic "install failed" error. There is no new driver available from Dell. Everything, including the BIOS, is up to date. The touchpad itself seems to work okay and it seems to be the process of shutting it off when the screen flips to tablet mode that sets it off.

DellCares via Twitter is looking for a solution for me but nothing yet.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

strange power issue on Inspiron N4010

So, a friend dropped off an Inspiron N4010 that looked like it is was in excellent condition, but he said it would not power up - no lights, beeps, or anything. He said I could keep it as a toy for my kids or for parts. Well, I hooked it up to an AC adapter, saw that the battery charging light came on, and then I powered on the system. Interestingly, it booted up just fine and showed no system errors of any sort of problems. I shut the system down and told my friend that it looked like there was no problem with the system.

The next day, however, I tried to power up the system again and got nothing. I tried to boot with just the battery, with the battery and AC adapter plugged in, and with the AC adapter alone and the battery removed. When the AC adapter and the battery are plugged in at the same time, the battery charging light does come on. Additionally, the AC adaptor does work fine with another compatible laptop.

So, I am unsure where to start troubleshooting this. The battery itself does not have a test button or indicator, so I cannot tell if it is actually holding a charge. I am also unsure if the N410 model will actually operate with just the AC adapter and no battery. Can anyone confirm if it should be able to operate without a battery attached?

If the N4010 can run with just the AC adapter and not the battery, then there must be some kind of short on the system board, or maybe a faulty breaker? Does anyone know of a mainboard reference for the N4010 that shows any breakers? If so, I can use my multi-meter to test for in/out current.

If the mainboard can only run with the battery actually attached, then maybe the battery itself is faulty and I can get a replacement. I am hoping this is the case.

The tantalizing thing for me, is that the system did boot once, perfectly.

Alienware 14, CD/Disk Drive?

I recently bought an Alienware 14 ( Christmas 2013 ), and I was wondering if it had a drive to insert disks or CD's.  I tried to go to Computer>DVD RW Drive>Eject, but it just makes a noise as if it were opening, but nothing happens.

Alienware 17 and Linux?

Does anyone have a good success story installing any flavour of linux in Alienware without any issues?

My favorite distro is Sabayon, but for some reason it's not loading properly, it's giving me a KDM error. Something to do with the nvidia driver's I guess. But then I could not get the live DVD to work even with ati or x11.

Dell Inspiron M5030 Battery Error Message

$

Hello,

I have been using a Dell Inspiron M5030 for almost 3 years and have had almost no problems with it. The battery life has always been adequate and I nearly always have it plugged in anyway. However, today I had the unit on for a brief period of time (about 30mins) and it went into sleep mode. I did not have it plugged in so that was ok. Whenever I got upstairs to my room and plugged it in and booted it up, a red X had appeared on the battery symbol in the bottom right hand corner. When mousing over the icon, it reads: 'XX% available, charging. Consider replacing your battery.' When clicking on the icon, it reads the same, plus the message: 'there is a problem with your battery, so your computer might shut down suddenly.'

Obviously, this has me very concerned. Is there any process I can try to troubleshoot my issue, or should I just go straight to buying a new battery?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Damien

Inspiron N4010 won't turn on

So, yesterday I was using my laptop which was working perfectly fine. I put in on sleep mode for sometime and half an hour later when I tried to turn it on, it won't. The power button would light up for a second or two and then it would just turn dead! I tried turning it on while being charged, still no use. I tried removing the battery and charge it only using the adapter but then it would not charge at all. And I know for sure that my battery and adapter are working just fine. I tried everything I found on the forums, removing the adapter and battery and then holding the power button, but none worked. Then after about 2 hours, the laptop started turning on when I hold the power button but everytime I enter my password, it would shut down instantly. And it has been like that ever since. I would be really glad if someone could tell me what exactly is the problem with my laptop and the easiest way to keep it working for a few more days. I am really hoping that I don't have to change the motherboard because I have already changed nearly every <ADMIN NOTE: Profanity removed as per TOU>thing in the laptop and I don't want to waste any more money in it.
