Inspiron 5110 Hardware malfunction

Hey all, Ive got my friends inspiron 5110 because it wasn't shutting down properly (it freezed on the 'shutting down' screen) and he asked me to fix it. Now here is the story.

I searched the internet for a while and found some guy had the same problem that i had and he fixed the shutting down freezing thingy by dissambling the laptop and removing the Mobo battery so the whole thing would reset when u placed it in again. I thought to give it a go so i started taking the laptop apart, all went fine and finally i got to the battery, took it out, waited a few minutes and put it back in. So i attached all the connectors from the keyboard, power button and so on and i tried firing up the laptop and shutting it down, It worked!! But when the laptop was applying some updates it had downloaded i noticed a loud rambling noise coming from the fan of the laptop, that, at some point stopped and the fan worked normally again. I found that very odd. So the laptop shut down like it was supposed to and i shook it around a bit to get the thing out that was stuck in the fan before, it got out and was a little iron clip that came off of the bottom of the casing. No big deal i figured. So i assembled the laptop back together and pushed the power button, Nothing!! The laptop won't start anymore and i have absolutely no clue as to why it won't.

I read somewhere that the iron clip could have cause a short circuit by touching the motherboard while the laptop was powered on, but i would think that if that was the case, the laptop would have shut down immedeatly and i would have noticed.

Additionally, when i plug the adapter in the wall it lights up green, but when i attach it to the laptop, the green light on the adapter goes off.

I have tried letting it sit for a night without any form of power connected (disconnected from adapter, disconnected battery and disconnected motherboard battery).

Also i have tried to attach the laptop's battery without an adapter, attaching the adapter without the laptop battery and with both attached but it just won't do anything. Does anybody have a clue as to how this can be fixed?

Is it possible that the motherboard was fried? If so, is it also possible that only the DC IN port of the laptop needs replacement? I really don't want to get a new motherboard but if its fried i guess i have to.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have an Inspiron 17R - N7110, with the i7 cpu and currently 4gb ram. I want to upgrade to 8gb, but am not sure whether I need 1066mhz, 1333mhz, 1600mhz speed ram or what. It will be limited by the motherboard in the laptop right? Is that 1066mhz then?

Thanks

Enable Touchscreen Capabilities Fresh Windows 8.1 Install

So I got one that stumped me. I just got a new Dell computer yesterday and as I've done the last 10+ yrs, I install a fresh retail copy because, like most people, hate dealing with their extra software and prefer a clean install so I just don't have to deal with uninstalling, etc. Turns out that may have been a bad idea. After the install was done, touch no longer works on the screen. I have installed the drivers from Dell's site to no avail. The device manager has no missing hardware and all windows updates are current. My system info recognized there is pen and touch capability. I also checked the Pen and Touch settings under the touch tab and that all seems to be correct (all I have to compare those settings to is a Dell Venue 8 Pro, but they are the same). My suspicion, and I could be way off on this, is that I'm using a retail copy instead of the OEM copy of Windows 8.1. I tired a Pro and a regular retail (yes, both legal copies) and neither worked. I do know the new computers have the key embedded in the uefi (bios). I have tried installing with and without overriding the embedded key. But that is the only thing I can think of and I'm hoping you guys had some ideas or someone else has had this problem and can help me troubleshoot. Model: Dell XPS 15 9530 with the QHD+ Touch Monitor.

Intel Smart Response Technology not working

I recently replaced my motherboard on my Inspiron 17r se 7720 because my HDMI port stopped working and my warranty had expired. I ordered the exact same motherboard and replaced mine. However unfortunately now my Intel Smart Response technology does not work and I cannot take advantage of my 32GB mSATA SSD. When I go into the BIOS the option of using Intel Smart Response Technology does not appear, only AHCI and ATA. When I open Intel Rapid Start Technology it just tells me "SATA SSD on Controller 0, Port 2: Incompatible"

My computers' start up and wake up time has drastically increased since replacing the motherboard.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Dell inspiron 1545 turns on to black screen

The battery on my laptop needs replacing and has to be plugged in to work, I accident my knocked the cable out and the laptop turned off. When I turned it back on I selected start windows normally and it loaded normally until it got to where I would normally log in. It was just a black screen with a moveable mouse pointer. I restarted and pressed f8. I loaded to last known good configuration and its done the same but loaded a notification box with the heading "wireless configuration" that says " notification dll has not been registered, programming will not work correctly". If I press the OK box it just goes back to the black screen with the pointer. Not sure what to try next.

this is the 3rd dell laptop in the family,3 weeks ago i purchased this 13Z for its elegant looks and slim size as well as good pricing but i noticed that its get hot easily compare to other laptop in the house Inpiron N4050 and N3010.  Im thinking because of slim size but thereare  times it wont get hot easily even 3-4hrs continous operation but sometimes even just 10min from starting it will be hot already...and the CPU fan noise is sound like unstable its like on/off/on unlike the other laptop when its hot the CPU fan will generate a louder sound but in steady mode not like on/off/on. when ever its hot i will  run the bios diagnostic and i will get the error code2000-0511,validation 69175 with MSG: The (fan) fail to respod... since this problem is intermitent i brough it to the service center and stays there for 2 week and yesterday i pick it up and they told me they did not find any problem... I'm wondering if this is normal for this type of ultra slim laptop ?

Problem accessing file server shares from laptop

$

Good day to everyone,

First of all, please pardon me if i've created this post where it does not belong. I simply couldn't find a more appropriate place.

A client of mine called me and told me about a problem he's been having. i logged in remotley and found the following problem in all 3 Dell Latitude 6330 Windows 7 x64 Professional laptops he has ONLY:

He could not remotley connect to any folder inside a share in his file server on the same LAN. If he maps that share to a drive at his computer (net use v: \\fileserver\sharename /persistent:yes), it works, but when he tries to enter another folder inside (so it comes out as: \\fileserver\share\folder), he gets the message "*FILEPATH* is not accessible. Access Is Denied".

If he tries to get to the same path using UNC path from the "Run" menu, he will get the error: "You do not have permission to access \\fileserver\share\folder".

Now, that's what i know:

1) No firewalls. AT ALL. Turned off and the service is disabled.

2) No anti-virus affects the sharing\laptops.

3) file, printer and public folder sharing are enabled. For Domain, Home\Work and Public.

4) IPV6 is cancelled.

5) tried Net Config server /autodisconnect:-1.

6) same users can access the share from terminal servers so it's not a permission issue.

7) Ports are open.

8) tried the following smb commands on the laptops:

Set-SmbClientConfiguration -RequireSecuritySignature $true
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters" RequireSecureNegotiate -Value 0 -Force

9) Other users, both Domain admin users and non, cant access the shares when they connect through these laptops.

10) tried mapping the netowrk share drives using both gui and cmd, with the "persistent" flag set to "yes".

11) tried to disable the "Miniport" network adapter.

12) Users have local admin permissions on laptops (doesn't seem related to me but thought i should mention it).

13) finally, and a critical piece of information, is that when their System Administrator performs a system restore to a point in time which is very close to when they had only a fresh OS installation, the problem disappears. something happens in between that causes this.

The reason i opened this post here is that i suspect it might have something to do with the laptop's model or any built-in Dell software this model might have.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Goodbye.

Enable ahci on a XPS M1710 laptop

Hello, all

A month ago your help allowed me to upgrade my trusty XPS m1710 with a SSD and Win 7 64.

Now, I am looking for a way to enable AHCI in the m1710's chipset. What I know at the moment:

1. There is no AHCI selection in the A07 Bios

2.  The chipset is  945 pm and IC7-M Family seial ATA storage controller -27c4.

With only the SSD in the laptop, I am hoping to download a driver from Intel that will force the hardware into AHCI mode.  I have spent time at Intel's site only to be turned over to the Dell Support group.

Although the SSD is operating in IDE ATA mode, it's performance is deeply hampered by the lack of AHCI support.

Help?

Most appreciatively

Help with restoring my laptop

$

I have a Dell Vostro A860 laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. I'm trying to restore it to factory settings, but I'm running into problems.

  1. I want to delete everything off the computer (user accounts, pictures, documents, programs, everything). I don't want to back it up on a disc. I just want everything gone and the computer to be reset to work as if it was first purchased.
  2. I've been researching on how to restore the system and I'm following the steps. I've listed them below:

1. Turn on the computer.

2. As the computer starts, press <F8> on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.

3. Press the <Down Arrow> on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press <Enter>.

4. Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.

5. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.

6. Click Dell Factory Image Restore.

7. In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.

8. Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.

9. Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.

10. When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.

I ran into problems on Step #6. I couldn't find "Dell Factory Image Restore" after selecting the administrator and clicking OK. I've also looked for the System Recovery Manager, but it's not there.

I hope someone will be able to help me fix this problem! Please and thank you! :)
