Vostro 3560 Win 7 x64 USB UEFI boot

$

Latest A13 BIOS (so there is nothing more to update)

Win7 x64 USB installation disk created for UEFI install as per:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1042186/asus-z68-series-information-thread-drivers-bioses-overclocking-reviews-updated-1-14/900_100#post_17884918

or

http://forums.bit-tech.net/showpost.php?p=2675864&postcount=1

Win7 does indeed start booting from the USB in UEFI mode, but it just hangs very early on while still on Starting Windows

It could be even @ Sub phase 1 - PreSMSS: Kernel Initialization

as per http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/11341.the-windows-7-boot-process-sbsl.aspx

Anybody could test it? Anybody has any solution?

Seb

Disabling Horizontal Scroll?

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop and I cannot figure out how to disable horizontal scrolling! Whenever I watch a YouTube video and move my mouse to the right or left, it fast-forwards or rewinds the video. I'm sick of this and have searched everywhere in my touchpad settings and Google to find an answer on how to remove this feature.

Can anyone help?

Performance Issues

A year and a half ago, I got a Dell Inspiron N7110. It has an Intel i7 Quad-Core Sandy Bridge processor, and 8 GBs of RAM. However, it still has major performance issues. Even with every optimization activated, a near-empty hard drive, and every feature that could take up the tiniest bit of power disabled, I still am only able to get ~20 FPS on games like Minecraft, at best. Games like Battlefield 3 are unplayable. Am I the only one having this problem? What can I do to fix it?

Graphics card not switching, and Nvidia settings make no difference

$

Hi all,

Having a problem with my new Dell machine (Inspiron 17R with Nvidia Geforce GT 650M and Intel HD Graphics 4000).

When I try to run certain games they are complaining of not having enough VRAM (one game showed a message showing that it could only detect 32MB of VRAM, so the game could not run).

I only have a basic understanding of the way these video cards work, but as I understand it, the Intel HD Graphics 4000 should be 'handing over' to the Nvidia card when it detects that it is running a program that needs more VRAM - I strongly suspect that it is not doing this, and that is what is causing the problem.

Also, I read on another forum that someone suffering from a similar problem had solved it by going into the Nvidia Control Panel and adding a program-specific setting for their game, telling it to use the Nvidia card - I tried this, but it appears to have made no difference.

Does anyone know if I can somehow 'force' the system to use my Nvidia card? Or have I misunderstood what the problem is, and if so can anyone point me in the right direction to fixing the issue?

Thanks.

Dell N5110 WWAN card and PCB

$

Hi Everyone,

I am new to these forums yet I have had my Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 i7 for just over a year now.

I bought it without the integrated SIM option and now want to upgrade the hardware to enable the mobile network connectivity. I can get hold of the PCB off eBay and a WWAN card but i do not know which WWAN card is used in these machines. A serious scratch around the internet has yielded nothing. I also cannot ascertain as to whether the WWAN card has a built in SIM card reader, as I have seen some do have, or whether I need to source a separate SIM card reader, as some laptops do require. I am an advanced user, so please don't worry about my capapbilities in making the installation. I just need to know what the hardware is that I require. As it stands I know that I need the PCB that has the extra mini PCI-Express slot on the bottom as mine does not have this and I do have a source.

So to recap, which WWAN card is OEM on the N5110 and does that WWAN card have a SIM card slot built into it or is there a satellite SIM card reader?

Thanks for all the help and kind regards,

Dylan

Oi mates,

I have a Dell XPS 15 (L521X). And I have noticed recently that there are some dead pixels or something dirty behind the display glass. I have not cleaned it with any chemicals and it has not been hit.

Is there a possibility to get rid of those mild spots?

Here is a picture of the screen. The quality is not good but still you can see those dots.

I have a Inspiron 17R SE 7720 running windows 8 which i purchased on 12th of December 2012

a few nights ago a shut down the laptop with no problems, however upon attempting to switch it on the next day only a black screen appears after the dell logo is displayed

I have ran a thorough pre-boot system assessment which has revealed no hardware problems

i have also accessed the advanced startup options menu through which i have attempted a system autorepair and system refresh, neither of which have solved the problem, the system does not give me an option for system restore and i have not attempted a system reset as i have misplaced my windows 8 product key so would be unable to reinstall it

thanks in advance

Dell Vostro A860 - Flashing Num Lock and Scroll Lock

$

Hi, I have a Dell Vostro A860 (model number PP37L) and it is really not in a good way!!!

One day I was using it and it just died and I couldn't turn it back on. When it did respond it wouldn't boot up and instead I had a black screen but with the num lock and scroll lock led's flashing (occasionally the caps lock led is solid as well). Sometimes very occasionally and generally after it has been left for several hours it will boot to the password screen but from there it seems to shut itself down. So being systematic and following information on the net I tried the following:

1. Tried with and without AC power and battery only - No Change

2. Tried with new ram and old ram in each RAM slot - no change

3. Replaced the motherboard - No change

4. Replaced the processor - No change

5. Replaced the screen inverter - No change

6. Taken the hard drive out and ran it in an enclosure, ran it through check disk on another machine, re-installed it - No change

I have literally run out of ideas, I read somewhere else that maybe it could be the computer over heating but after having no problems with it for years I find this hard to believe. Also on another website which talks about LED post codes it suggests it could be a problem with 'USB controller initialization' but as there is nothing in the USB slots and the slots are integrated to the motherboard which I have changed I don't know how the problem could be with this. Could a faulty screen cause it? Any ideas would really be appreciated!!

Replacing battery under warranty

I did a search for this subject, and I found one persons query which seemed to be handled, but there wasn't a procedure there for getting this done.

My laptop is under warranty and we got the "your battery has experienced a permanent failure and needs to be replaced" message.

Can you help me out?

No service tag or stickers on the bottom - Issue?

$

I purchased an XPS 13 L322X laptop about a week ago. The laptop has a minor issue that required the carbon fiber bottom to be replaced. Dell was very nice about this and got a local tech out to my house in only 2 days to do the swap.

Good News: Laptop is not fixed

Bad News: My service tag, along with the pretty windows 8 and FCC stickers are all gone. (Still on the old bottom of the laptop that is being sent back to dell via the local tech)

So... my question I guess would be... Is Dell support able to send me a new set via mail for me to stick on, or does it really even matter that my service tag is gone because it appears to be "burnt" in to the laptop config.

My computer won't connect to the internet!

I purchased an Alienware m14x last June. I also got the warranty that lasts a year, which guarantees that Dell would provide aid if my computer isn't working right. For the first 7 or so months my computer was working perfectly, after 7 months my computer started freezing frequently... But, recently my computer started doing this thing where it'll look like it's connecting to the internet, it will...for a millisecond then proceed to try reconnecting. It keeps doing this over and over again. I have wiped my computer three times now, wiping it did fix the problem...temporarily obviously.  I called Dell and spoke to them for about an hour and they "realized" it's most likely my wireless card since my drivers were up to date and they couldn't find a virus. Dell managed to get someone to put in a wireless card for me a week or so ago, now my computers is doing the same thing where my computer will disconnect...reconnect...disconnect. Please help? I don't know what to do, I don't care if I'll "lose" information...

Vostro V13 User Profile Cannot be Loaded

$

Primary Symptom:

18 month old laptop started to have 'User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.' error when entering the user password on boot up. I put in the correct password, the error message displays, I press OK and then see a screen saying 'logging off' and the login screen is redisplayed.

Most fixes say to log into Safe Mode and do various things that I would like to try. The issue is Safe Mode is not a Boot Menu choice.

On a new boot, I press F2 and Phoenix SecureCore (tm) Setup Utility is displayed. Tabs across the top are:

Main tab only allows changes to date and time. Shows hardware configuration.

Advanced tab has everything Enabled except Boot-time Diagnostic Screen and the SATA Mode is AHCI.

Security tab has all passwords as Clear, Password on boot is Disabled.

Boot tab lists:

            Hard Drive (Samsung drive)

            USB Storage

            CD/DVD/BD-ROM

            Removable Devices

            Network

Exit tab does that.

On a new boot, F8 does nothing but goes Dell screen and then to Windows startup screen. I see F12 Boot Options in the upper right.

On a new boot, F12 brings up the Boot Menu that has:

            Hard Drive

            CD/DVD/BD-ROM

            Removable Devices

            Network

            Diagnostics

Safe Mode is not a choice. Have looked at F2 settings to see if anything will give me Safe Mode but nothing there.  Hard Drive takes me to the Windows logon screen. I don't have bootable media for this laptop so cannot use CD, Removable Devices or Network. I have run Diagnostics and the machine is clean with no errors.

Been searching for hours and finding nothing. Did find a note in Dell saying to clear the laptop's static charge by removing peripherals and battery, push power button using AC cable for 15 seconds and try F8 again. Did all those things and it changed nothing.

When I try the wrong password, I get a wrong password message. Using the right password, I get the load failure message. Windows startup screen boots fine but I cannot log in.

Please help point me somewhere that configures Safe Boot so I can continue to how to fix this problem. If you have a complete solution, so much the better. I really appreciate the help. I'm at my wit's end right now.

Questions on Inspiron

The two(?) year old Inspiron (N5010) stopped powering up the other day.

  • Tried other Dell adapters that work with other Dell computers but it didn't make any difference.
  • Booting from the battery, which I don't quite know if it is charged (if I were to take a guess not because the LEDs on the bottom of the laptop does not light up).
  • I followed information from the web to take apart the N5010 to extract the hard drive. It is working fine.
So what can be wrong? Is it the motherboard but if so why suddenly???
In the meantime purchased an Inspiron 14z with Core i3. Other than Win8 UI 'fun' it is almost setup for the Win8 native system image creation to the external hard drive. The external hard drive has about 1.7TB of free space, this is a 500GB internal drive. Problem is, and I'm wondering if it is because of the very small SSD that is supposedly in there from factory, that trying to create the system image gives me an error of insufficient disk space! But there are lotsa' space!
Finally the Inspiron 14z does not have COA sticker on the bottom. I've googled it & some do say that COA stickers are not there any more. Wanted to hear some official words from Dell.
Thank you,
Rob
