Do I need a CD of Windows 8 or 8.1 if I would select "Remove everything and reinstall Windows"? Is this action like reformatting or is reformatting my laptop itself?

My Laptop is Dell Inspiron 14 with built-in Windows 8 SL OS then I updated it to 8.1 SL. I would like to know if selecting the option of "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" reformatting? And if it is what would happen to my laptop? Would I need a CD of my OS because the problem is I don't have the CD, or would it reinstall Windows 8 or 8.1 by itself? If so would my OS still be authentic and genuine Windows wouldn't I be needing another license? I would like to know if their is a risk as a result of selecting this option because I would like to cleanup my laptop (hard drive) without regretting anything in the end. I just want to make sure. Any clarifications to my query would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

After a long search on internet for days, I decided to post my problem in this Forum. And Hopefully I find the solution here.

I have a Latitude E6410.  Intel Core i5 2.40 MHz. 4.00 GB RAM.

I have a problem with booting the computer. The first time I open it (in the morning). It works fine and boots from Hard drive without any problem. once I restart it, After the boot logo (Dell Logo) the screen stay black and nothing happens after that. Even if I try to boot it from a different device; like a DVD Drive or a USB. And Also when I press F12 to go to BIOS Setup or to choose a different device to boot, the screen stays black.

I checked the Hard drive, I performed a virus scan. ChkDsk, Everything is Fine.

I don't know what else should I do.

Thanks for reading my post. And please let me know if you have any solution or any suggestion.

Thank you so much.

Problems with Start up/boot manager

I have a Dell laptop that when I try to start up goes directly to the Windows Boot Manager and is stuck there. It states that an "unexpected I/O error has occurred". States that it is being caused by a removable storage device being unplugged while in use or by faulty hardware drive. I have not used any removable storage devices with this laptop so I ran a diagnostic thru the F12 menu. came back showing a Hard Drive fail. I am unable to get past the Windows Boot Manager so I have no way to access Windows "fix it" on the laptop, so I have no way of knowing whether or not there is an actual problem with the hard drive or was this just some type of glitch? The laptop was functioning normally prior to my recent attempt to start up my laptop. I shut the laptop down properly and when I went to start it up again several hours later I got the Boot Manager. Has been stuck there since. It gave a Status Code of 0xc00000e9. Need help!!

I let my daughter play around on my lap top the other day why I was updating hers. She is 7 years old and somehow managed to reboot to bios and set a HDD password. Now I cant do anything. all she remembers she says is pushing a bunch of buttons. Does anyone know how to or if possible to clear the password or recover it? I cannot boot to either the BIOS or the OS. I removed the driv and hooked it up via a usb adapter I bought and the system I hook it up to sees it but it comes up with a message that says "Waiting for drive to be Inilized." anyone have ahy sugestions?

Inspiron 15R 5520 not switching on

My laptop was on and charging that day. After 2 hrs or so, when I checked if the lap is charged fully, the laptop was switched off . Also the green LED in the charger was blinking and giving some noise. I tried to switch on the laptop with the charger plugged in and also after disconnecting the charger from laptop. But the laptop didn't turn on. I even tried removing the battery and starting the laptop directly on ac power, but again that green LED in charger was blinking with some noise. When I disconnect the charger from the laptop (with the charger connected to ac power), the green LED glows steadily.

Please tell me what could be the problem.

Major Issues & Problems with Dell XPS 12 Convertible Ultrabook Tablet?

I had the (refurbished) XPS 12 Convertible for about 10 hours now and I am scared of what I have seen so far and what there is to come.

1.  WiFi connectivity gets lost/broken very often and/or stuck in 'Limited' status (no connectivity).

2. WiFi always is disconnected after closing / opening the lid and often times is unable to get signal back (or takes long time 3-7 minutes) for the signal to return. I have made the appropriate setting adjustment for windows not to cut power to the WiFi Card when in sleep mode, and also set the power settings to Maximum Performance. No luck.  I have installed all of the latest drivers from Dell and, with support, also tried the Intel (more updated) drivers for Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235. No luck. Update to new Bios, still no major improvement. After hours with Dell support, it looks like they will send someone over to replace the WiFi card.

I was hoping that was it and that's the only issue I'd deal with. But wait, there is more:

3. Track pad is odd. I am not doing anything fancy, I just want to use it as a courser and left/right mouse click. Sometimes it is totally unresponsive, you have to move your hand off of it and try again for it to register that you are touching it. Sometimes it ignores left or right mouse clicks as if they never happened.

4. Screen brightness a mind of its own too. I have set the screen to be on Maximum brightness in all conditions (power & battery) and have disabled any dell options, that I can find, for it to manage brightness for me. Yet, half of the time it is at half brightness (thought I set it to maximum) and dims/goes bright on its own as needed. Is there a hidden option/menu for this 'feature'? The only way to get the full-brightness back on is to close the lid and open it again, it starts with full brightness (for a while).

5. The auto-rotate sometimes doesn't register that the screen was flipped . I simply have to move it to another side and back to the position that I want in order for me to get it to rotate correctly (I have not disabled auto rotate). I am scared of what I have seen so far.

Given the above, should I call dell and ask them not to do a WiFi replacement and instead replace the whole ultra-book or is this such a common issue that I will get the same thing again?

I was sooooo looking forward to this 'system' and to get my hands on it. But now, I am not sure. I do love how it feels, looks, how quit it is, and its overall potential but for a system that costs as much as it does, I can't have these issues both in terms of functionality and price. The above is just Day 1, about 10 hours.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Powers on, nothing on screen

I have a Dell XPS M1530. I left it plugged in straight to the wall for a while and left it off. I opened it and tried to power up, but I get nothing on the screen. The power button is illuminated and the fan is running, but nothing happens. I connected a VGA monitor to see if maybe the LCD was bad, but I get nothing on that as well. What's the next step of troubleshooting this problem? Thanks.

No charging with my Inspiron 1720

My Inspiron 1720 is not charging. I tried to press the Power button with no battery and AC adapter connected, it did not fix the problem. I bought a new AC adapter, it did not fix the problem. I did a Dell PC diagnostic on Dell web site, everything was fine.

The LED on the adapter DC cable is green when I connect it to the power outlet, but the LED goes off when I connect the adapter to the laptop.

Do I have to order a part (power supply?) and replace it?

E7440 UK vs US (Better Specs on UK Model)

$

Does anyone happen to know why the UK gets a better version of the Latitude E7440? Checking out the web pages through dell.com and dell.co.uk, here are some major differences:

UK vs US:
----------------------
CPU: i7-4600u vs i5-4300u
RAM: 1x8GB  vs 2x 4GB
Display: 1920x1080 vs 1366x768
Wireless: Dell 7260 (ac/a/b/g/n and BT 4.0) vs 1601 (a/b/g/n and BT 3.0)

Those are some of the biggest differences, and as you can see it makes a huge difference in the type of system it becomes. The UK version can almost take on a Mac Book Pro if you bump up the RAM, just minus 2 cores on the Proc.

I tried to hit up chat support and they suggested I buy it and ship it to someone in the UK and then have them ship it here. I'm more interested in knowing what was the product decision behind the differences in offerings.

Refurbished laptop not refurbished to factory state - Intel Anti Theft - platform attack detected Studio 1558

$

I bought my Studio 1558 from Dell Outlet. It has been running great for a few years until recently when it started overheating. I opened it up and cleaned out the fan to aid in cooling, when I put it all back together the Intel Anti Theft kicked in and asks for the password to start up the system.

Having never installed the anti theft software I don't know what the password it so.  I called Dell, and the service representative looked into it and told me that it was installed by the original buyer who returned the computer to Dell and it would appear that Dell did not remove it when they refurbished and re-certified the system.  However to try to help me get back into my legitimately purchased computer from them I would have to pay to have the warranty extended or pay for a single incident support.  After probing further and trying to make my case that this is clearly an oversight on Dell's part they (at no charge) redirected me to Absolute (the company that makes the Intel Anti Theft software) to get it unlocked.  Absolute verified that it was installed on my system by the previous owner before my purchase date however they are unable to unlock my system unless the previous owner contacts them.  They said they would try to reach out to the previous owner but I haven't heard anything from them yet. Any advice on how to get back into my own system would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone else had problems with refurbished systems not actually being restored to the factory state?

Realtek Memory Card Reader Driver

$

First of all...I am using a Dell Inspiron 15 3521 laptop. I have clean installed Windows 8 from the DVD Dell supplied after purchasing the laptop. Windows 8 installs but with several items in Device Manager as UNKNOWN DEVICES.

I have downloaded all current drivers and installed them in the correct order and restarted the machine after each driver installs.

After the machine sets for about a half hour, there is a message in Action Center that states "install the memory card reader driver" and pushes me to Realtek's website where I can download drivers. However, it states that the Card Reader is a different model number than the one Dell lists for my Service Tag. Dell says it is for Realtek Card 5179. Windows says that it is 5139/5129.  I have looked at the original configuration of this computer and cannot find that card reader anywhere. Can someone help me find the correct Card model number and the updated driver to make Windows stop that error in Action Center?

Thanks for your help

Dell Inspiron 1720 32 bit with Vista - upgrading to Win7

$

Hi there,

I have currently Vista 32 bit on my Dell Inspiron 11720. I am about to upgrade ( using clean install ) to Windows 7 Ultimate. If I do the clean install, it will ofcourse erase off the installed Dell Inspiron 1720 Vista drivers and also the services. I have the Drivers DVD ( from Vista) which I have got it at the time of purchase. Would that be enough to use this CD to install the drivers to be able to work on the installed Win 7 or do I have to download the Win 7 drivers for Inspiron 1720 from Dell website? If so, are there any instructions how I could install the drivers .

Thanks in advance
