New to the forum, wondering if anyone could help me out.

I have a Inspiron 17R SE 7720, Windows 8, which I believe the mother board is gone in. May have someone interested in it for parts, the laptop was about $1200 new, would like to know what to try and get for it in this condition. I'll do my best to answer any questions you have.

Specs can be found here:

Issue with USB 3.0 Port - XPS 12

I have a Dell XPS 12 9Q33 (i5-4500U,8G,256G SSD). Aside from the image retention issue which is confirmed by lots of XPS 12 users, mine has one malfunctioning USB 3.0 port.

You know that XPS 12 has two USB 3.0 ports. One of them is next to the mini display port, and this does not support PowerShare function. The other one does support PowerShare, and this is the one with problems.

When I plug my WD Elements 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive to this port, it randomly disconnects during the process of large file transfer, either reading from or writing to the external hard drive. (I believe reading from it causes more disconnection)

I did a lot of things to narrow down this issue. First I checked if my WD external hard drive is defective. I ran a thorough diagnostic, wrote zeros, and used it to do the same job on several other systems, including this XPS 12 with the USB port that does not support PowerShare. Under all these circumstances no random disconnection was observed. Afterwards, I plugged different external hard drives to the problematic USB port of XPS 12, and they also showed random disconnection (including USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 external hard drives).

To rule out the possibility of power settings, I toggled off "USB selective suspension" in the power settings of control panel; not effective. Actually, the fact that one of the ports is working flawlessly while the other is not is enough to draw the conclusion that the port with PowerShare is not performing well.

I talked to Dell Support about this and my motherboard got replaced, but the issue is still there. I am asking if the two ports has some differences in the fundamental design, such as power voltage or something, that caused this? Any other potential reason/advice/suggestion on this topic is welcomed.

Dell Intelligent display cannot be disabled on Vostro 5470

Hello guys, it's my first time to buy a Dell laptop and I'm loving it.

My laptop is Dell's new machine - Vostro 5470.

It was shipped with windows 8 OEM OS but I downgraded it to my own win 7 ultimate with full format.

I've downloaded and installed all compatible driver for this laptop with 7.

I hate the auto-adjustment of screen backlight according to the brightness of the background, so I googled and knew that I can disable Dell Intelligent Display to avoid it.

The problem is, even I unchecked the Dell Intelligent Display in Dell's battery settings, the auto-adjustment kept going on.

I sought through the battery settings of windows and dell but none of them could kill the auto-adjustment.

Is there any other way to kill it?  It's really a stupid design that dims backlight when looking at BLACK pages.  It's all black....

6400 Processor

I have a dell Inspiron 6400 with a T1350, 1.86, 2MB Single Core Yonah processor with 533 FSB. It has onboard 945GM video. I inherited this from the wife when she got a new Dell. I have put in a SSD drive with Win 7 and bumped to 2 gig of ram. Also got a new battery.

Everything works well except for the video. It is choppy with YouTube videos and even local video from the hard disk. It's annoying!  She told me that it worked ok before my mods with XP installed but I can't verify that since I never used it myself. I also installed Ubuntu on the old HD and that seems to have choppy video as well. When playing a video the processor is maxing out at 100%. I did find a Win 7 video driver but it didn't make a difference.

I want to update to a dual core processor since this is about my last update option. I picked up a T2400 but it has 667 FSB and I am not sure what will happen if I install it. Will the FSB change by itself to 667? I don't see any options in Bios. As I understand it the  945GM chipset will work on 667 ok.

Sure I could just buy a new laptop but I would like to get this one functioning correctly and the best that I can get out of it if possible.

Change PC Settings doesn't work in Windows 8.1

Would like to reset my Dell Inspiron 15 to factory settings (back to Windows 8)

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and the button "Change PC Settings" does nothing.

I've done a number of things I found on the internet, like changing registers to no avail (gets worse)

Also called Dell customer support and gets complicated (they want to know details of ownership and I got this as a gift)

Is there a command prompt to reformat the machine?

Thank you for your help.

Vostro 3500 and DW1501 wireless card problems

I recently got a Vostro 3500 running windows 7 Home 32bit.

The laptop came with the DW1501 half wireless card (no option to select another).

I noticed that the laptop would not see any 5Ghz wireless channels

or get above 72-65mbs connection rate to a 2.4ghz wireless N WAP.

I have done everything possible to try fix this my self from updating the bios and drivers to changing channel on my WAP and even lowing the security but to no avail.

Also tried fixing both WAP and laptop to both 20 and 40MHZ but no luck

Spoke to dell today via that chat interface and got disconnected however, i have gotten an email to say that

the card is not 5ghz capable  http://www.broadcom.com/products/Wireless-LAN/802.11-Wireless-LAN-Solutions/BCM4313

This is okay because i dont need to use this channel and am happy to use the 2.4ghz frequency however i was then told

that he had looked at other dell customers speed problems and the card is working perfectly fine!!!!

I have emailed back to say that 65Mbs on a N channel is not fine (this is connection speed and not bandwidth throughput)

I Quote " Also, with regard to the speed of the Wireless card connection. We have also found some postings with other Dell Customers and the same speed is being obtained by their DW 1501 Wireless Card and this is working as normal."

Does anyone have any comments on this or even better does anyone have a vostro 3500 with the DW1501 that can get 130mbs or even 270?

Will let you know what Dell have to say for them selves :(

Has someone noticed ghost images (screen burn-in) on Dell XPS 12 Duo?

I recently noticed ghost images on my Dell XPS 12 Duo. If a bright image on dark background stays on the screen for a couple of minutes and then I switch to somewhat dark background I can clearly see the previous image on the screen for some time before it fades away. Once I noticed it I started spotting even more subtle ghost images. I even managed to capture it in a picture with a low-end digital camera - http://imgur.com/a/RIYff (notice the tray icons clearly seen in the Win 8 start screen and even the facebook ad is visible). It is far more clear when you look at the actual screen and not on a picture. I already arranged replacement laptop (as I had other issues with this one) but yesterday I read news about mass defects in Apple's Retina MacBooks ( http://www.ibtimes.com/print/macbook-pro-retina-display-problems-apple-faces-class-action-suit-ghosting-issue-1129939 ) with practically the same issue. Now I wonder if it is possible that all Dell XPS 12 Duo screens have this problem.

So anyone else seeing this on his machine?

Problem with wifi on Vostro 3460

I have recently bought a new Dell Vostro 3460. Today I completely formatted the hard drive, created new partitions and installed Windows 7. I installed all the suggested drivers but I have a problem with the wifi driver. I had like 6 to choose from, but none of them worked (I deleted the previous one before installing another). Some would say that they are not appropriate for this computer, some that the wireless card cannot be detected and some would simply close while installing. Also the light indicating the wifi on/off status won't turn on. However, the fn+F2 combiation seems to work as in the hardware section, where the wireless card should be, the announcement that the driver for it is missing turns off and on along with the fn+F2 combination. So, anyone has any suggestions how to solve my problem? Again, the problem is with installing the driver and that some of them won't detect the wifi card.

Dell XPS 2720 Disk Eject Not Working, on Monitor and on Keyboard?

Hey,

I know I am not the first one asking this question, but unfortunately my brand new XPS 2720 has this problem! My company bought 5 or 6 XPS 2720 for the senior management staff, I noticed that problem too, you touch the eject light at the right bottom corner on monitor, nothing happened; you use the button on keyboard nothing happened?

Feel really strange, this is something so obvious a problem, why there is no solution, did I miss anything? It is very inconvenient, can somebody help me with this?

Thank you!

Dell Extended Battery/Longevity mode (not working)

$

Hello,

I have made a few queries and posts into Dell Ultrabook battery life extension ideas...  Since we are unable to remove the battery casually in standard notebooks, it always remains plugged in..  So that means you only have 2 options to power your system.. Leave the AC Adapter charged in or charge the battery up, then unplug adapter and use till its drained of power...  We all know that leaving the AC Adapter in continuously to power the laptop can degrade the battery over time.. This is a MAJOR setback to ultrabooks in my opinion...

In my other laptops, standard notebooks I would ALWAYS detach the battery underneath so I can use only the AC Adapter as a power source thus extending my battery life..   Especially since there are times where I am using my laptop now for 4 plus hours or more at a time.. Almost on a daily basis...

We atleast have some new features where we can use the options to such as Dell Extended Battery life - such as powering the battery in the range of 50% to 100%... As well as a meter showing the effectiveness of "normal" battery options..

HOWEVER.... After rigorous testing I found that the battery charges fully every single time in the same amount of time!!!  Never does it range between 50 to 80 to 100%  ... every time I plug in the AC adapter, with all extended battery life options checked off.. the battery will charge to 100% each time..

All DELL has to do is come out with software to somehow electronically disconnect the battery as an option to strictly use AC Adapter power.. This day in age I am sure it can be done.. Especially since they already have this software tool to extend the battery life options...

OR... fix Battery Mode and Longevity Mode where its supposed to charge between 50% and 100% and 88% and 100% respectively - yet, instead it charges straight to 100% each time.. I know this because I unchecked/disabled Longevity mode/Battery mode... And it took approx. the same time - give or take to charge the battery to 100% !!

Is anyone else having this same issue?  Or can offer up some additional suggestions to extend battery life in my Dell Inspiron 15z Ultrabook??  IS there any way to disconnect the battery so I can only use the AC Adapter to power the laptop?

THANKS!!

Marc

Dell Precision M4500 - No Display after sleep or hybernate

The computer will go into hibernation without any problems.

When I power the computer back up, it starts up I see the starting windows screen. That screen goes blank and then nothing happens.

I just updated the BIOS to A15 and that did not work. I have tried uninstalling the video driver and that did not work. I tried installing an older video driver and no luck there.

So not sure what the problem might be.

The video driver I have for the NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800M show version 8.17.12.5922

I cannot believe the way I was treated with Dell and I have bought allot of computers from you. I had no problem with you exchanging computers with me until you sent me one that was less than I already had. I was told to pick out a computer that was close to what I had and I did. But everyone said no. They just wanted to send me a computer that they could not sell and the one they sent me was junk from the start. But that's on I will deal with the junk one I have, Dell is not the only computer maker out there. In fact there are several manufacturers that have a wonderful product that they will stand behind. I was also told that if they have to replace mine they would send one identical or better than the one I have. But no you wanted me to take a lessor computer and that I would not do. So now I guess I am the customer nobody want to talk to anymore. Ralph Lloyd

I was trying to do a factory restore on my laptop after backing up whatever files I wanted to keep, and when I got to the restore page I got an error message saying the file is corrupt or missing. Dell XPS 13 Windows 8.1 pro Installation problem

Hi all!

I have a Dell XPS 13 machine. It's the i7-4650u version with HD5000 graphics. It initially came with Ubuntu, however I wanted to install windows 8.1 Pro after a while.

The problem is I can't get them to install correctly. Installation hangs at the "getting devices ready". If it goes to 100%, I get a blank screen afterwards. A few times it just got stuck at 91%.

Initially I tried a clean install and got the results mentioned above.

After that, I succesfully installed Windows 7 without a hitch amd they are running flawlessly.  I tried to upgrade to 8.1 Pro afterwards, but I am getting the same results.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Alienware m14 died

I was running the windows 7 system rater and then I heard a snap and then my laptop died. Now every time I plug in the power cord the blue light goes out. I pulled the battery out and the same power cord in and blue light goes out. I also read to hold the power button for 15 seconds with no battery in and then plug power and same. I was plugged into a surge protector when this happened. No other devices got effected. Could this of been a defective power cord that died after the warranty expired. Does any one know if they had the same issue before and if it may be a motherboard issue that needs to be replaced. If so I am already screwed out of $1300 and would go buy a mother board and install myself it may solve the issue.
