Dell XPS13 Ultrabook won't start up

$

My Dell Ultrabook 13's screen suddenly winked out during use and now I can't get it to boot up at all. The battery's charged up (the indicator shows 5 lights), but when I try to start it up, nothing happens.  Holding the power down for a few seconds while the laptop is unplugged gets the backlit keyboard to flash, but the screen's totally dark.

Oddly enough, nothing at all happens when I have the laptop plugged in and try to start it.  No flashing keyboard or anything.

Any advice?

There has been 2 laptops that I have tryied to flash the bios to the latest version and the one for the N4110 A12 does not work in DOS mode.  Create a bootable USB and run from it with the instructions provided. It says ¨This program can not be run in DOS mode¨ please some assistance on override or the file to use win2flash app.  An ISO that will do the trick.  The current bios is A04.  The system boots and imidiate restarts.  I have removed the HDD and CMOS battery and load to bios but to reflash bios with out a HDD in windows is imposible.

I am working on this laptop for a lady at work and had to replace hard drive (was totally not working). Installed new hard drive and was able to get an old version of Windows XP Multi Media OS to load but unable to connect to internet to update drivers. Is there a way around this issue or can I order the original OS disks and driver / utilities disk from Dell. Thanks in advance for your help, I work on these computers at no cost and as a hobby.

Brand New Laptop Hard Disk Problem

Two days ago I got my brand new Inspiron 15 7000 Series Touch from the Dell Site. Today when I turned my computer on I got the warning message that I posted below. Everything I read online pointed me here so hopefully someone can help me with this issue. The computer is obviously covered by warranty as it is only 2 days old. Extremely disappointed that I spent hundreds of dollars on a broken machine.

"Windows Detected a hard disk problem:

I have a Inspiron 1750 and my number pad has stoped working. I have tried taping the Num Lk button but nothing happens. Is there any other way to turn the number pad on and off? Also is there anywhere I can get the layout for the keyboard and what the function keys do. I have figured out the volume ones but what about the blue ones?

Thank you in advance for any help you may have.

Brand New Dell 7737 Memory Upgrade Issues

$

Hello Dell Community-

I just bought a brand new Dell Inspiron 17" Model 7737. It came with 8GB of installed DDR3 PC3-12800 (1.6GHz)

I do some pretty memory intensive applications (many times with multiple memory hungry programs at the same time) so i purchased (2) 8GB identical memory modules from PNY.
(For a total of 16GB. Obviously I took the stock (2) 4GB modules out of the machine).

The computer will not boot. I just get 2 loud beeps. I looked up the "beep code" and it says that the computer doesnt recognize that there is memory installed.

Now, I am an electrical engineer, so i know all about ESD and that is *not* the issue. For troubleshooting i did the following...

1) Took identical memory out of an MSI computer I have (exact same memory specifications) and installed it in the Dell ( 2, 8GB modules). Same problem. 2 loud beeps. I cant even "F2" into the BIOS.

2) Took the PNY memory that i just bought and installed it into the MSI computer. No issues what so ever. So I know it is not a memory issue.

3) Just for kicks and giggles, i went out and bought 2 more Identical 8GB (16GB total) modules. Installed them in the Dell. ERROR. 2 beeps. No BIOS, no nothing. Installed the exact same memory into the MSI computer- works perfectly fine.

4) While the *NEW* memory i purchased (BOTH sets) were in the MSI, I ran memtest86 on the memory- again, just to rule out any sort of memory issue. Absolutely zero problems found.

5) Upgraded the BIOS on the DELL from A05 to A06 to rule out a BIOS recognition issue. Exact same problem still.

The Dell is *NOT* running in UEFI mode (nor does it have to to recognice >8GB of RAM) This is for specific reasons regarding issues with partitions and the solid state drive. It is obviously a 64 Bit operating system, so should have no issue with addressing >8GB of memory.

Any ideas as to why the computer will not recognize *ANY* memory installed >8GB?? This cant be a hardware (mobo) issue can it?? Dell doesnt limit the memory to only 8GB does it? (that would be VERY silly these days).

This is driving me absolutely insane. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Perhaps even a mailed steak dinner to you!! :)

Thank you all in advance for any input.

Cursor jumps around when typing

This has been happening when typing emails in Outlook. It will be interesting to see if it happens while typing this. So far it's been OK. I have a Dell XPS M1530. There it did it just then, the 1530 jumped into the subject field. It always jumps into somewhere I have already typed. So it doesn't just happen in Outlook. It is very annoying. I am using a Bluetooth mouse, but also there is a touchpad just under my hands. Could it be that I bump it by mistake?

I don't know it that's the problem as the touchpad cursor is different to the typing cursor. I'm watching the touchpad cursor and it's not moving. The typing cursor is behaving itself now. I have just moved the touchpad cursor up the screen a bit and the typing cursor is still behaving itself. Sorry about all this running commentary on what's happening, but it was misbehaving before and now it's not.

Does anyone have any clues on this problem? While I am typing my hands are well clear of the touchpad. It just jumped again, and it did not jump to where the touchpad cursor was, so it's not related to that.

Erratic mouse pointer and 'stolen' input focus

I bought my XPS L702X about 20 months ago.  I have always had a problem with the mouse pointer. It will suddenly move to either the bottom left or bottom right of the screen.  The more frustrating part is that it takes away your input focus.  This is extremely frustrating when typing, because the text has not been input, as your processor's focus has been redirected.  It's like a strange being has suddenly taken charge of your machine.  I have noticed this problem has been posted on several forums for nearly two years now. I have tried different things, such as disable the touch pad and update drivers, and a variety of other 'fixes'.

I love my Dell, but this problem seems to be happening more often lately.  It is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING, as this phenomenon can happen every 1 or 2 seconds on a bad day.

Is there a solution to this problem?  A friend suggested a quite radical solution, open up the laptop and unplug the touch pad.  This seems a little drastic to me.  Does anyone know of an effective solution to this problem?

Inspiron 15 - 7000: Won't wake from sleep mode & Lit keyboard doesn't have a sleep mode?!

Brand new PC, out of the box for 3 days and when it goes into sleep mode, i can't wake it up without hard shutting down.

This isn't a viable option for me as

a- i was always taught this is like ripping a plug out of the wall for a PC

b- it's a waste of time. i don't want to have to reboot every time i walk away from my computer for 30 min.

Am i missing a setting update?

Also---is it really the case that the backlit keyboard is either on all the time or off all the time?  Standard backlit keyboards also sleep when the keys aren't being used and 'wake'/light when one starts typing again.

My keyboard has 3 options;

1- off all the time

2- on all the time

3- on--brighter---all the time

Again, seems like a waste of battery. if i'm not using the keyboard, the keys should not be lit.  So again, I ask---am i missing a setting?

Inspiron 17 7737 i7 laptop will not Shut Down, reboots by itself.

My laptop will not respond to the on-screen power buttons, only the physical button above the keypad.  When I use the mouse to shut down the unit with the on-screen power icons it appears to shut down normally (the fans stop, the screen goes black, etc.) but a second or two later it reboots. When I press the physical button, the unit shuts down and stays shut down. This laptop arrived three days ago loaded with Windows 8.0. I successfully updated it to windows 8.1 and began loading programs (QuarkXPress, Office, DropBox, etc).  I do not notice if the problem occurred before the upgrade.  Has anyone else had this problem and is there a solution?

Thanks

Latitude 10 Tablet ST recovery from backup Image

Recently we sent for repair a tablet to Dell. Before sending it back a full back of OS and apps were made to an external Burner. The repaired Tablet came back with a wiped disk and a factory OS Win7 image. The dell backup and image utility can not find the above back up nor will it address the D:drive for the external DVD drive with image. WE even put the last disk of the backup image into the DVD drive with no success. I verified the existence of the image using the CMD prompt. I suspect that when one backs up the full tablet it must create an "index" somewhere (restore partition ??)to allow the "restore utility" to find the back up. Question: How and where can I copy this "index" from the backup image on the DVD to the Hard disk on the Tablet so the restore utility can see it? Dell support could not help me either.

Dell XPS 15 (L502X) laptop Windows 8.1 Quanta H.264 integrate webcam Problem

Hi,

I installed Windows 8.1 yesterday and after the installation I noticed that my camera wasn't working. The Skype and Camera apps don't recognize there's a camera. After seeing this I installed the Dell Webcam Centre, but it didn't recognize it as well. I tried uninstalling the drivers and installing them again. The drivers for the Quanta webcam apparently don't recognize Windows 8.1 (I got an error message saying that you must have Windows XP SP2 or above to install them) so I installed them in compatibility mode for Windows 7. Unfortunately that didn't work as well. And now in the Device Manager the integrated camera is missing when it was working before the installation. Any ideas on how to resolve the issue? Is it possible that it's a hardware issue, a loose cable in the camera docking station or it's some kind of incompatibility with Windows 8.1? Thanks for everything in advance.

Kind regards, Ivan L Petrov

My laptop is not docked!!!

When I boot my Latitude D600 plugged into the wall, all is fine.

When I try to boot from the battery, I get a error " the computer is docked, but only running on battery power, either undock or plug in your ac adapter".

If I boot with it plugged in, then remove the ac cord all is fine too.

It seems my latitude thinks it is docked.

I went into the bios and played with the docking settings. I installed tons of driver updates for everything, still no luck.

Flashed the bios with the new version, still no luck.

A tech support guy thinks it may be the motherboard.

I never used a docking station, so I have no clue here.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Windows 8.1 driver for Broadcom USH BCM5880

When I installed Windows 8.1 (from the MSDN developer site) on My Latitude E6510 it has an unknown device called Broadcom USH. A Windows 7 driver would probably work, but I don't know what that device does, so I don't know which driver to try and install. I think it's for the BCM5880 chip. What does that do?

System simply does not detect my new battery from dell store. [India]

Hi there.

I own a Vostro A840.

Revision of Bios: A03 upgraded to A04

OS: Windows 7 x32 Ultimate.

Adapter: 65 watts AC. DP/N is 06TM1C PA-12 Family.

Battery: [Li -ion]: DP/N is 0F286H. Type- F287H Capacity- 48Wh.

I bought a new battery online, some months back, as I post now is March 2014. From dell store located in Bangalore, India.

Later recently I bought my 65 watts adapter from the same store.

The problem is:

My new adapter charges my old battery.

But its not so with the new one.

Os does not detect it. When I uninstall the ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery entry from device manager it detects and says Plugged in and Not charging.

On restart it again falls to battery not detected. On some forum advice I flashed the bios and rebooted it.

Still no progess.

Please help. I cant see my money go down in drain...

Wifi on Dell Latitude E5420

Hi,

Friends have given me their Dell laptop Latitude E5420, which has barely been used.

I am trying to get Wifi up and running on it but with little success. Others have tried, but they are not really very technical!

From basic research, it seems like i don't have any drivers for Wifi, and also a wireless card in whichever socket (I don't want a "dongle", so am happy to buy a card if needed).

However, I don't know how to check either of these as fact, and if there is anything else missing

- For the wireless card, I have looked in the Device Manager in control panel, but don't know what I'm actually checking for.
- For the Wifi driver, the Network Connections in control panel comes up with 3 options. Broadband connection (disconnected WAN Miniport (PPPOE), Broadband Connection 2 (Disconnected WAN Miniport (PPPOE) and Local Area Network (Network cable unplugged Broadcom NetExtreme Gigabit Ethernet).

Please can someone help? I'm pretty sure the laptop is missing something(s), but not sure what, and how to check what is missing.

Also, what do I need to actually buy, and what can I download from the net or from the Dell website?

Many thanks for your help

Victor.

Dell Installation Disc Won't let me do a Clean Installation...

$

I sent this once before, and didn't get an answer, so I am trying again.

My daughter gave me her Dell Laptop Inspiron 1520. I want to do a clean installation and start over.

When I put in the installation disc I get a message that reads:

"Your CD/DVD drive during this boot cycle is f:

A Ram disc drive is available for this boot cycle as C: It contains several hard drive setup tools. Please use these tools only  under the direction of Dell Support Staff."

I'm not sure what all  of that means but I need to get past it, so I can delete the partitions, and format the hard drive. Is there a way to get around this to get to the setup for cleaning off the hard drive?

Since I sent this in earlier, I have installed Windows XP from an old  Dell 3000 Dimension desktop, but would still like to do a clean install, and put on the original win xp that came with the laptop.

Thanks,
