Need *OLD* firmware file for HLDS (HL-DT-ST) GA31N 12.7mm SATA Slotload 8X DVDRW

I have a Studio 1558 laptop.  Instead of the TSSTcorp TS-T633C drive that is usual for this model, mine came with an HLDS GA31N with firmware version A102. (Shows up in device manager as HL-DT-ST_DVD+-RW_GA31N__A102).

Because I was having problems with writing to some media, I went to http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails?driverId=FM0HF which has firmware A201 for this model.

The Windows version of the firmware update utility didn't work, giving an "Invalid F/W - Buyer Mismatch" error.  However, the DOS version that was included ran without any problems, warnings or complaints.

The bad news is that it broke my drive.

Any attempt to insert a disk fails, with the drive immediately ejecting it and then continuing to loudly run the eject cycle a few more times before stopping.  Similarly, when I first power on my laptop, the drive will go through several louder than previously eject cycles before the machine boots.

Does anyone have access to the old A102 firmware (or any other A1xx version) for this drive so that I can at least get back to where I was before?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Dell Inspiron 3520 running Windows 8.1 crashes without warning frequently

$

To Tech Support/Assisting Forum User,

It has occurred to me that there's an issue with either my Dell Inspiron 3520 Laptop Computer or my Windows 8.1/Windows 8 OS. Occasionally, running the computer (sometimes when it's overheating or just when unplugging the laptop), the computer just crashes, i.e. Screen goes black, power light and HDD light stays on for a about 2 seconds before powering off. No blue screen, no warning, no updates. There's was no reason for it to go off, but it did. It's frustrating because:

1.) When I'm working/playing a game/hosting a multi-player server, the computer tends to crash in the middle of it causing my work to go to waste.

2.) I believe it will damage my laptop and cause further problems in the future

I've researched a bit about this issue before and people have said that it's due to overheating, but I have proven that this is not the case for me as I have placed my PC beside a fan where it kept a steady temperature of about 50-65 Degrees Celsius and I've still faced the issue.

If anyone can assist me with this I would be extremely grateful, I don't want to have to spend money going to a technician for this, and even so I believe my PC is still on the warranty. I'm not positive.

~Jagofr

**EDIT**: The way to recreate my issue with this specific system.

Run ThrottleStop

Have Clock Speed Multiplication set to 20 (400MHz less than the intended speed of the Intel i3 Dual Core 2.4GHz Processor)

Tick EIST (Which I would think means Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology)

Wait 5 - 30 minutes.

PC Crashes.

If I don't use ThrottleStop, my CPU clock speed will constantly spike down to 800MHz (I think due to the fact that the CPU temperatures rise above 80 Degrees Celsius) which is not what I want because it causes my system to go unstable and move incredibly slow when this occurs and it's absolutely frustrating especially when doing tasks that involve a massive CPU load and requires faster clock speeds (Video Rendering, Game Play, etc.).

Dell Inspiron 1545 AC adapter cannot be determined

Hi,

My laptop does not recognise the adapter which came with the laptop and displays the message 'plugged in, not charging' my battery is currently at 11%. I reset the BIOS to defaults as suggested on previous threads, however it still says the AC adapter is unknown. The message when the laptop is starting up is:

'The AC adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.

Please connect a Dell 65 AC adapter or greater for best system performance. To resolve this issue try to reseat the power adapter.'

The AC adapter is working and connected correctly. Please advise.

Service tag not recognized by My Dell Downloads after new HD installation -- Can't access original install software -- refurbed Vostro 3360

I recently installed a new hard drive in my refurbished (now out of warranty) Vostro 3360 after the original drive suffered a fatal crash. I've been able to identify and install most of the drivers through the "Analyze System for Updates" feature. However, although this utility can detect my service tag and analyze my system, I cannot register the computer to access My Dell Downloads so I can reinstall software for the fingerprint sensor and webcam, as well as other third-party and Dell software that was originally installed.

Initially, when I attempted to register the laptop for My Dell Downloads, the process would just hang endlessly (no matter what browser I used). Following a tip I saw online, I checked my BIOS and found that the Service Tag field was blank, so I went ahead and entered my Service Tag number and updated the BIOS. Now, when I attempt to register the computer, I get a "Service Tag not supported" message.

I don't know if this issue is related  at all to the new HD installation since this is the first time I've ever had need to access My Dell Downloads. But, it has become an issue for me because of the installation.

Ugh. So:

1. Is there any way to get the system recognized so it will register with My Dell Downloads and access the originally installed software? Is there something I can/should do in BIOS? Something Dell can/will do from their end? (Even if I have to pay tech support to do it?)

2. If not, is there some other way that I can obtain the software to make my laptop fully functional again? I especially loved the fingerprint sensor for signing into my laptop and would hate to give up that feature.

Thanks!

Hooking up a digital projector to my laptop

I just received my new Inspiron 17 (3737) BTX and found that it has no port to allow me to hook it up to a digital projector (14 pin). Can I get an adapter cable of some kind to enable me to attach the projector? Also, is there a cable I can use to hook the laptop up to a flat screen tv? I present classes from a PowerPoint presentation, and being able to hook up to a tv would be ideal for small groups. For larger groups I'd use the digital projector.

Broken GPU? how do I know?

Guys, I've been searching net for some time already, but I stopped due to futility.

I have Alienware M17X bought roughly 2 years ago and it was running smoothly. Till now. It was ALWAYS  standing on my desk, never moved to another place, it did not get any fluids on it, etc. I took good care of it , avoided any potential "everyday" dangers.

2 days ago, during playing SWTOR game, it got frozen, BSOD appeared and then I had to restart in the "hard way" - meaning disconnecting the power cable, and removing the battery. The system came back but it disabled the nVidia GTX560M GPu, stating the infamous "code 43". Immediately after it started downloading some Windows 7 updates, but the one for nVidia did not succeed. I have tried to reinstall the drivers (used ALL avail options from Dell and nVidia sites),

I also tried to "enable" the card in  Safe Mode (did not work at all) and what have you. I have checked numerous forums, most of them referring to SLI issues, but WHAT if I have just single GPU?  I Was on Windows forums, nVidia forums, googled and WIKI-ed it. No solution for my case.

At this point I give up, I need professional help, stating whether my GPU just died, or it is just a software conflict. Since my Alien has integrated Intel graphics, I still can use the laptop, but obviously I cannot play games.

Now, paying some 1900 EURO for a rig that does not even survive 2 years is rather pathetic. I could have the same stuff for 3 times less and I would know I cannot expect much of it.

Nevertheless, the question I have is:

- HOW can I check if my GPU just broke mechanically, so I need to replace it? Is there any program that does it?
- if the above is not the case WHAT can I do to make it RUN again?

Windows code 43 is extremely generic and refers to both options, i seem not to be able to eliminate any of them.

Thanks for your help!

My Dell ATG E6410 basically completely crashed. Nothing from the hard drive was salvageable (including any of the recovery files). I contacted dell support and they sent me 2 dell DVD's. They are labeled as "DELL SOFTWARE RESTORATION DVD".

The only problem is, THEY WILL NOT BOOT! I have tried booting directly from the Bios and no luck what else. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

dell e4200 + mini-card Internet help

Hello

I have an interesting issue here...

I got a dell e4200 used from someone, and it didnt have the wireless 3g card inside, so i went out and got one... i installed it, the computer and everything detects the card and installed the drivers accprdingly. I even installed them manual as well... I believe when the computer was first built it has never built with the card installed. however all the connections etc are there, including the pins for the SIM card and the wires for the antenna.

i have the sony ericsson mobile manager software to get it hooked up to the net... i have a valid SIM card installed under the battery.

My issue is, it refused to connect to the network... The PC sees the card, detects the card, the BIOs was updated and that sees the card and everything is turned on in the BIOs. However whenever i open the connection manager from SE, it says no broadband card installed, and when i go to view, information, it doesnt list an IMEI etc like as if that card isnt there. Yet in device manager, the PC clearly shows the card there and installed, and working correctly.

There are times when in the task bar where the wifi signal is there, i open that and see that the wireless network is listed there, i click that and it tries to connect but fails right away saying, connection error code 0 and i havent been able to find anything about that error...

im out of ideas where, i have tried everything, rolling back the drivers, installing the latest, removing the card, trying out different SIM cards. nothing is working.... can someone help?

Bluetooth transfer failure

I recently purchased an XPS12 UltraBook running Windows 8.1. I'm having difficulty transferring files to it from my Samsung Galaxy S4 via Bluetooth. Here are the details:

The phone and XPS12 appear to be successfully paired.

When I try to transfer a document (a small photo was my test sample), the phone displays "Sending file to XPS12..." but after a couple of seconds displays "File not sent".

When I transfer a file from the XPS12 to the phone, that transfer works fine.

I also have an XPS8700 desktop PC running Windows 7, and the phone is also paired with it. Transfers from the phone to the 8700, and transfers from the 8700 to the phone, work fine.

The only transfers that fail, consistently, are transfers from the phone to the XPS12.

I'm fairly sure I'm just failing to adjust a setting someplace, but I'm stumped as to what I need to change. Any ideas?

E6540 Inadequate Thermal System! ATTN: Dell

$
0
0

Okay, so I have decided to revise this thread to accommodate the recent interest by customers who own this notebook.

Nutshell Explanation: The E6540 and its "one-fan" design is totally inadequate for properly cooling the i7-4800MQ and the AMD HD 8790M. The advertised specifications (2.7Ghz) are unobtainable during realworld and benchmark testing scenarios. The cooling system just can not handle the thermal footprint of the CPU/GPU.

Long Explanation: I have spent a lot of time and effort in researching this problem. Here are a few things I have discovered. First, Dell has a history with producing systems that can't handle the thermal requirements of the chips installed inside of them. One would think that Dell would learn from their mistakes... Second, the Latitude E series is probably an "end of life" model. Dell jumped the gun on the E6540 and failed to do the engineering. They assumed that the E6530 design could accommodate a CPU/GPU combination with a higher TDP than it's predecessor (E6530). Likewise, the E6540 was one of the first enterprise-grade Haswell notebooks. So I'm sure the pressure was really on at Dell to push this out of the door. These machines are inherently flawed. DOA! We have been scammed. For those of you who have upgraded to the 2.8Ghz model. You really got scammed! You will never be able to use that horsepower.

I have been a 15+ year Apple customer. This has been my first PC in a long time. Frankly, I'm very disappointed.

Now. Let me go ahead and leave a few links here that reference other forums/sources that discuss this issue:

Hi - I cannot seem to get benchmarking software to see my 8970m card?!  Instead the tests (for example Futuremark) only see the native intel 4600.  I downloaded the latest catalyst drivers and using the driver utility  - software forced the application to run using the 8970m.  After rebooting and again runnign the test - only the 4600 was being benchmarked.  Is something wrong with my system??

Inspiron 15R N5110 screen brightness dims on dark images when running on battery

$

I have a 2.5 years old Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 running Windows 8.1 x64. In last 2-3 months I noticed issues with the screen that I didn't see before.

When laptop runs on battery and the screen shows a dark image, the brightness decreases to something like 70% and once I picture changes to something bright (eg white), the brightness gradually increases back to 100% over about 10 seconds. Happens in all power modes (eg, high performance, balanced, power saver). In Power Options display is set to always be on 100%, also adaptive display brightness is disabled (don't laptop has ambient light sensor anyway).

Is that a sign that the lcd panel or inverter is going bad?

Dell Inspiron 3135 Hard Drive Problems

$

My friend gave me her Inspiron 3135 netbook to fix. When turned on, the screen didn't light up and it would beep. I opened it up and identified the hard drive as the source of the beeping so I bought a new one, put Windows 8 on it (with a different pc), and stuck it in. The Dell splash screen would appear and give me the option to press F12 for boot options, but after the splash screen, it would say "Reading Media... [failed]" I re-formated the new hard drive and put it back in, getting the same result. I tried the drive in a different computer, an HP Pavilion, and it worked perfectly. Can anyone help me?
