Inspiron 1720 Slow POST. BIOS level problem.

$

Hi, my laptop (specs below) has been taking very long to boot up lately.

After the POST (Power On Self Test) it pauses for about 60 seconds, showing only a black screen with blinking cursor, before loading the OS.

I've seen similar posts here, but I think my case is different.

If I press F2 (Setup) or F12 (Boot Sequence Menu) during the POST it will still pause for 60 seconds before entering the BIOS Setup or showing me the Boot Menu.  This leads me to believe that this problem is entirely independent of my OS setup.  Also, I recently reinstalled Vista (for an unrelated matter) and the problem persisted.

Since this started happening I've upgraded my BIOS to A09.  I have then downgraded back to A08 and restored BIOS default settings.  I've also systematically disabled OnBoard components to see if they were slowing down the POST.  Nothing has removed the 60 seconds of blank screen.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues?  Can anyone suggest a fix?

Thanks.

XPS 14 Checking Media [Fail]

I have mentioned this problem here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4677/p/19537504/20503019.aspx#20503019

But I thought it might be worth posting here, too.

My 10 year old daughter saved her money for 2 years to be able to buy her own laptop for Minecraft.  We received it about two weeks ago.  Today I ran windows update and installed the recommended and optional updates.  While installing the updates, windows said it had encountered an error and needed to restart.  Upon restarting it went into the endless loop mentioned above; "Checking Media - FAIL".  I have found a few other forum topics here and elsewhere online that offer solutions, but I do not have an option to choose Windows Boot Manager, just UEFI Pvl4 and UEFI Pvl6 (or whatever it says).  I am also at a loss as to where to find the serial code to contact Dell Support.  There are no stickers anywhere on the machine.

If this is a hardware issue I assume that this should be covered by the warranty since the machine was purchased 2 weeks ago(?).

I should add that I did the diagnostic and everything appears to be OK.  Any help is most appreciated!

XPS 14 availability

Hello,

I just joined the forum to compare the answers others might receive when querying the Dell chat for the upcoming availability of the XPS 14" laptops.

The XPS 14" suddenly disappeared from the catalog on early January 2014 and I was told that by the end of the month they would be back.

I've contacted again the Dell chat again a couple of days ago and I was told that the availability date was unknown.

This applies for Italy and apparently also Germany (friend of mine contacted the Dell chat too for me).

So, basically is there a date for these laptop to be refurbished/upgraded or should I give up?

What kind of answers are others receiving?

Thanks

Upgrading my RAM - Dell Inspiron N5010

Dear all.

I want to upgrade my RAM (currently i have 2X2GB - Total of 4GB).

I did some search over the internet to see what will be compatible with my laptop.

I found out that Kingston or Crucial are the best for dell laptops.

They both recommend - 8GB (2X4GB) PC3-10600 1333MHz 1.5V SODIMM.

I bought 2 4GB sticks of Kingston (kingston kvr13s9s8/4) and tried to install it.

When i tried to reset my pc, it didn't boot up, and kept restarting.

I thought That both of them were faulty, so i went to the place i bought it from and tried 2 different sticks and still the same problem.

When i called my support in Israel, they told me - "Sometimes it works, sometimes not". (From my opinion this is not a respectful response)

Please advise me what is wrong, and how can i upgrade my RAM.

Thank you all.

Regards,

Omer

Latitude E6410 resume from S3 Suspend (on batteries)

$

Latitude E6410 (Intel i7) fails to resume (total system freeze within first 3 seconds) from S3 Sleep (STR) when resumed running on battery power. Sometimes first resume cycle passes and problem occurs  during 2nd or 3rd suspend/resume cycle.  When the laptop is running on AC-power the resume works 100% correctly.

This issue disappears when SpeedStep is disabled in BIOS.

It seems like a BIOS bug (tested with rev. A05)

OS:  Linux 2.6.35 and 2.6.36 x64, Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit

Bluetooth mouse disconnects

Is anyone NOT experiencing seemingly random Bluetooth mouse disconnects with Dell laptops in the default Windows 7/8 configuration? In my experience I always have to disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Bluetooth radio device to get stable operation (recently on my E7440, but I cannot recall coming across any Latitude model in recent years where I did not have to apply this tweak.) I guess this has detrimental effect on battery life, and a permanent fix would be most welcome.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2710637/no suggests getting a firmware/driver update from the manufacturer, so I've engaged Dell ProSupport to help me look into the issue. I fear it's a general problem with the Intel Bluetooth chipset, though.

Any other insight appreciated.

1601 Wigig Card Installed, Application Failed

$

I'm attempting to install the 1601 on a client's E6430 (not a 6430u) machine, I installed the card (assuming I didn't need to remove standard WiFi card.

I was able to install the card in the upper left corner, it was detected, appeared as operational in device manager and the drivers from here, however the application failed to install.

My question is manifold...

  1. Do I need to remove the Bluetooth module? The card was detected so it lead me to believe it needn't be.
  2. I've read that there is a "hidden" blue wire that also needs to be connected to the Wigig card, however I was unable to locate it.
  3. Is that blue wire native only to the 6430u Latitudes?
  4. Does my client need to buy the 6430u?
  5. Is there a workaround? Perhaps the wire is, indeed, somewhere behind the LCD screen of the 6430 (non-u model)?
  6. Is there a new, different card we can purchase in order to provide this solution to our client?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated as we've billed this client a great deal of labor, television mountings in his conference rooms, wiring, drops, the wireless docking station itself and obviously, the card itself and he is extremely dissatisfied.

2005 Dell Inspiron 9300 Blue Screen of Death

$

HELP!  I am a civil engineering student who still has a 2005 Dell Inspiron 9300 that was my high school graduation present.  I really need this to be dependable for my engineering courses.  Recently, as in the last year or so, I began to get the 'Blue Screen of Death' when I would leave the computer on for several hours with several tabs on my internet browser.  I will come back to the computer and it would be turned off.  When I power it up, it goes to the blue screen of death.  I get the following 4 long error codes followed by a message saying that it is 'beginning dump of physical memory':

(0x9DBC6240, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X8051F9CC)

I have taken a picture with my camera and saved it as a .jpeg file.  This post didn't have an attach option.  I can send it to anyone so they can see what my blue screen encompasses if it would help to diagnose the problem I have.

So what I have been doing since the blue screen started popping up is to hold the power button with the blue screen on to power off the computer, power it back on, and then it is good to go until the next time I either leave some programs on and walk away for a couple of hours, or if I hibernate it with several or more tabs on my internet browser running, and then turn it back on and after a few moments of resuming computing, the blue screen will pop up.

Thank you to anyone in advance for replying to this article.

i received a new dell laptop a few days ago with windows 8.1 installed. i had no idea how to do anything with it. i could not figure out how to change the homepage in windows internet explorer. i returned the laptop and dell was great about handling everything. i then ordered a new dell laptop with windows 7 installed and i am looking forward to receiving it.

i would suggest dell include a 20 - 30 page basic instuction book with windows 8.1. if i had that i may have tried to learn 8.1. i had nothing and did not know where to start.
