The operation did not shutdown cleanly

My Dell Laptop 15R SE 7520 is out of warranty by a mere 3 months (ended 11/21/13).

The laptop is looping with the following messages all on one page (doesn't even get to the Dell logo):

The operation did not shutdown cleanly

Reconstructing Cache Metadata

Please do not interupt this process

Reading Packed Metadata into memory

The way I am able to see these messages is by holding the escape key down.

I have read many posts on this subject and it appears there is fault with the product. Any thoughts on this?

I have tried the following to try and resolve the problem:

1) remove the battery, holding the Fn key down for 30 secs, re-installing

2) powering on using just the ac adapter

3) removing and reseating the HHD

4) removing, reseating, inserting only one memory card at a time and changing the location

5) booting up without the HHD installed - this one is most interesting - the laptop stopped looping. There is a Samsung SSD device showing and a virtual device disabled.

Can someone help with this issue? Thanks!

I bought Dell Inspiron 15R SE (7520) like a week back. The laptop is just fantastic and it's working pretty well as intened. Today i just found out that this laptop has a KEYBOARD BACKLIGHT. I turned it on from the Windows Mobility Center, but it's not working at all, do i need to install any drivers for it? Please do help me with this issue as i work mostly during night time and a backlight would really help.

Thanks.

Inspiron 15R SE 7520 wifi keeps dropping

I bought this laptop in August, less than a year ago, and for the last four to 6 weeks I have had quite a bit of trouble with the wi-fi dropping for no reason.

I have Qwest/Century Link DSL, running a qwest/century link pk5000 modem.
My wifi is set to WPA2-person.
MAC Filtering is off
Set to B and G (802.11b and 802.11g).

I have updated all of the latest drivers and that does not help.

I am using OPENDNS on my modem, but that has not been a problem for other wireless devices in my house. This laptop drops wifi at my in-laws too, and they don't have OPENDNS or anything else installed on their modem. (I set it up in a basic mode for them because that is what they wanted.).

I have been through other forum threads searching for answers and have tried modifying my power settings, uninstalling then reinstalling the drivers.

Other things i have tried are at the following links:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/t/19493746.aspx

Why am I having such troubles? What is wrong with this computer?

Hi,

Apart from the general advice of 'press the backlit keyboard key' I cannot find any help on what might be stopping my keyboard backlight from working.

How do I resolve this, how do I raise a support ticket with Dell?  Been trying to find a way to contact Dell support for over an hour now.

Hello all,

Hope you can help me before I buy a new motherboard.

My Studio 1558 is keep crashing- before windows starts, at the bios and even at the Hardware-check (pressing FN + Power button).

I've tried to do the HW checking without HDD AND RAM (removed one RAM each time and also trying the tow different slots), It's start the checking and crashes.

Also tried the HW checking with battery only and once with AC only and the same- keep crashing.

Do you think it's 100% the motherboard problem? Any idea for something else?

Really appreciate any try for help, it's very urgent.

Thanks and sorry for the bad English,

Maor.

Dell Team,

I have a 2 year old N5010 Inspiron i3 3GB 550v. Last year there was overheating issue so i got it serviced (dust cleaning and new thermal paste) and the laptop worked fine.

But now, after about 6 months, even with laptop cooler and recent dust cleaning, the laptop heats up again, after only a couple of hours of gaming. The keypad area gets really hot.

Kindly suggest how the overheating issue can be solved.

Was thinking of disabling the HD4400 in device manager to force the use of GT750m all the time. Any clues if this might work or disable video altogether.

In addition the nvidia software is showing the 3D tab setting only, where is everything else?

L322X USB 3.0 ports does not work at SS with Win7

I've got an XPS L322X from the company I work for. For software compatibility reasons the IT had to install Win7 Pro 64.

By installing the drivers from the Dell site everything looks good, USB 3.0 Hub is shown in the Manage Devices window, but the ports Always works as USB 2.0

I've got an USB/Ethernet adaptor with Gigabyte capabilities but to have it working I must force it to 100 Mbps.

Any suggestion to overcome the problem?

Thanks in advance

Latitude E7440 - Keyboard backlight not working

Hi all,

Unboxed an E7440 with the touch panel today. It came preloaded with Windows 7 Professional 64bit. After initial setup, e.g. user account creation, locale settings, etc..., I am unable to enable the keyboard backlight, and cannot find any driver updates via Dell, or special support packages.

The Fn-Right arrow key does nothing, all other Fn-<blue keys> work as expected.

Have I been delivered a lemon, or are there any specific drivers I can find (via the dell driver cabs or through the recovery partition image files ?) to check.

Of note: I also have a corporate E7440, identical HW configuration (no touch screen, only difference), with our corporate Win7 32bit image. The keyboard backlight on it works.

My XPS 13 purchased in January last year has become completely unresponsive. The battery won't charge and the laptop simply will not turn on. Is there anything I can try or is this a case of sending back to Dell for them to sort out?

Replacing Standard Hard Drive for SSD Options?

Looking to replace the standard 1TB HD plus 32GB SD installed set up with a 256 SSD in new XPS15 (L521X).

What is the recommended option, remove both standard drives and just use the new 256 SSD or keep the 32GB as well? I'm not sure how the standard is configured. Do I need SATA or mSATA connection on the new drive?

Any help appreciated.

e7240 CONSTANT LOUD NOISE FROM FAN / VENTILATOR TURNING ALL THE TIME

$

We received 2 brand new E7240s directly from Dell, one for myself and one for my colleague. As soon as I turned it on to build it for my colleague, I noticed the machine was overheating and the fan was making a noise. Dell suggested a BIOS upgrade which didn't change anything. They then changed the heatsink, again this changed nothing and since then they changed the motherboard. My colleague has gone on holiday so I don't know if her issue has been resolved, however, my laptop from day one does not overheat (as obviously as it did for my colleague) BUT THE FAN TURNS ALL THE TIME. So much so that I think the person in the upstairs bedroom is using her hairdryer. Dell replaced the heatsink and the motherboard yesterday, I have done the same BIOS upgrade and the problem is even worse. As soon as I switch the thing on, the ventilator turns all the time making a loud noise. My previous model was the E6500 and I wasn't bothered by any noises it made.

The 7240 makes so much noise that I want to throw it out of the window Super Angry , seriously I am going to switch back to my 5 year old e6500 which is now very slow, I just can't take the constant hair dryer noise from the fan! I am waiting for Dell to get back to me but I don't see what else they can do.

I suspect there is a design problem with newer models, someone with a Latitude 13 Notebook has also mentioned it on the forums, also someone else with an e7240 states "I have noticed the fan running much of the time - it's quiet but you're aware it's spinning.  I am just setting it up though, so the CPU is fairly busy." A person with the e6320 states "And the fan is loud and turns itself on way too often".

XPS 15 9530 - Noise problem?

Hi all,

I just got my new XPS 15, amazing laptop but there's 1 big problem,

A high-pitched scratching/screeching noise is produced from the power button area ONLY when the power is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

I've seen other forums and others have exactly the same problem, Any ideas?

I found this example http://z.mk/e6vq , the power is plugged into the laptop at 6 seconds.

Thanks

After a Dell Tech came my Laptop got worse

$

So here the full chronology,

At tuesday 25th Feb 2014, my Notebook Dell Inspiron 3420 wouldn't boot normally. I called the Dell service number for my Country (Indonesia) and the Customer Care for Inspiron Division said that they would send a Technician to replace my Hard drive. Later that night i tried to make a recovery USB flashdisk, it worked. My notebook was working fine, so when the Dell person (from Singapore) called me I said that it was working with a recovery USB disk. They called me all day to inform me that they would come in the afternoon. When the tech person came, i showed him that it was working fine and i actually quite satisfied. With his recommendation, he said that he would check on my hard drive as a pre caution act. He then told me that since the symptom i told him seemed to indicate that there was a hard drive issue, he would recommend me to replace the hard drive (My symptom was that under Thorough diagnostic using diagnostic tool the process seemed stuck at 95%). I agreed, and he then replaced the hard drive he brought with the one installed, then he set my notebook on diagnostic tool under thorough mode. He left me the used hard drive and told me that i can buy a SATA connector for Recovery Data. Because it was taking too long and it was night (I never asked him to come in the afternoon), He left me with my notebook still doing thorough diagnostic, i then leave it be and go to dinner with my family. When i got back from dinner, the diagnostic tool said it's done and my device was ready (no error message). When i tried to install my OS (reboot), it showed me an ERROR message "Real tek PCI: PXE-E61: MEDIA TEST FAILURE, CHECK CABLE, PXE-MOF: EXITING PXE ROM. REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA IN SELECTED BOOT DEVICE.". I have tried to disable "integrated NIC" yet it will only show this ERROR "REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA IN SELECTED BOOT DEVICE".

My questions are:

1. Where did i got wrong?!

2. How can it get worse after a tech come?!

3. If i call now, will there be a Customer Care?! Because i can't have my works piling up

4. Can i have a replace for my unit?! I'm tired of having this experience. I just want it run like before.

Thank you for any reply given,

Arung Isyadi
