A friend of mine sent his m17x R1 laptop for me to fix. I ran diagnostics on it from the F12 boot menu. It gave me an error code of 2000:0414  Cable - Inverter cable not detected. The system boots fine, runs windows flawlessly. I've checked memory, hard drive, anti-virus, all is good. screen is 100%. LED's work fine. Anyone have an idea on what might be causing this issue? The battery is dying, and I swapped it with my personal alienware, "R2" and still gave the error code. I've been in the laptop, cleaned the fans, put everything back secure and snug, but error still appears.

Suggestions?

I have a new dell 7000 15" touchscreen laptop that is going crazy. The screen is self clicking non stop.  I have rebooted and it doesn't go away. It is acting just like the one in this video on YouTube. (Please visit the site to view this video)

HI, NEW TO THE FORUM, 1st POST. I HAVE A XPS 15 (L502X) WITH THE MULTI-TOUCH SCREEN.I HAD THE SCREEN REPLACED BY DELL LAST YEAR($468). WELL, DROPPED AGAIN AND THE GLASS SHATTERED, DISPLAY WORKS BUT NO TOUCH SINCE GLASS SHATTERED. CAN THE TOUCH-SCREEN GLASS DIGITIZER BE REPLACED SEPERATE FROM THE SCREEN, OR DOES IT COME AS A COMPLETE UNIT. I SEE IT IS ATTACHED WITH SOME SORT OF ADHESIVE TAPE. CAN THE GLASS BE PURCHASED AFTERMARKET OR FROM DELL FOR SELF INSTALL, OR IS THIS ANOTHER DELL REPAIR. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hi,
with my recent acquisition of a Dell XPS-12 for work, I decided to replace my desktop with it.

Upon installing VirtualBox (and VMware) I've discovered that even though "Virtualization" is enabled in the BIOS, VT-x support is not. Also, there's no way to specifically enable or change the settings of individual advanced virtualization settings in the BIOS, even though the Intel Core i7 does support it (along with SLATE etc.)

I've heard people using CCTK (the dell Client Configuration Tool Kit) to change individual BIOS settings, however I can't find a version compatible with the XPS-12, and can't find any other way to configure this.

It's pretty much essential to my role as a developer that I get this working in order to run the 64-bit virtual machines that use in my day-to-day job.

ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I recently noticed ghost images on my Dell XPS 12 Duo. If a bright image on dark background stays on the screen for a couple of minutes and then I switch to somewhat dark background I can clearly see the previous image on the screen for some time before it fades away. Once I noticed it I started spotting even more subtle ghost images. I even managed to capture it in a picture with a low-end digital camera - http://imgur.com/a/RIYff (notice the tray icons clearly seen in the Win 8 start screen and even the facebook ad is visible). It is far more clear when you look at the actual screen and not on a picture. I already arranged replacement laptop (as I had other issues with this one) but yesterday I read news about mass defects in Apple's Retina MacBooks ( http://www.ibtimes.com/print/macbook-pro-retina-display-problems-apple-faces-class-action-suit-ghosting-issue-1129939 ) with practically the same issue. Now I wonder if it is possible that all Dell XPS 12 Duo screens have this problem.

So anyone else seeing this on his machine?

i have a dell studio 1555 and it is 5 years old.

recently i had been working on it and it suddenly got switched off on its own.

when i tried to restart it it didn't start.

i removed the ac adapter and again plugged it in

i pressed the power button but nothing happened. i unplugged the charger and removed the battery.then i plugged in the charger.

the charging light turned up for a second and then it went off. i pressed the power button but nothing happened.

i again repeated the same activity but this time pressed the power button as soon as i plugged in the adapter(within fraction of seconds of plugging in the charger).

this time laptop got turned on without any problem

so i got to know how to switch it on,

i thought there must be a problem with the battery as it was 5 years old,

i purchased a new battery from  dell store.

i installed it and tried to switch on the laptop but again it didn't turn up. then i tried to do the same trick again but nothing happened.(this time the charging light did not turn up even for a second.)

i removed the battery and did the same trick. this time laptop turned on.

i plugged in the battery when the laptop was on and it was detected and charged to 100% without any problem. 

i removed the ac adapter and the laptop ran on battery for 3.5 hours.

but again when i turned off the laptop and tried to restart it(with battery still inside) nothing happened. the laptop behaved as if it is dead.

also everytime when i switch on the laptop using the trick pre boot system assessment starts.

i allow it to proceed but the laptop shuts down in the middle of that.

to use my laptop, every time i have to first remove the battery then plug in the charger and press the power button within fraction of seconds to switch it on.

the laptop works fine when it gets switched on, the battery is charged, it works on battery without the power supply and there is no other problem

this means the new battery,the charger and the laptops motherboard or any other internal circuit related to power is working properly.

also there is no beep or sign of failure.

please help!!!!!!.

I bought my Inspiron 14z less than 2 years ago and it was working great. Recently, the battery stopped lasting very long. I bought this computer partly for the battery life. I thought it was the battery going bad, so I purchased a new battery. Results didn't change. It can only last 2 1/2 hours on a full charge and takes the same amount of time to fully charge. I don't know what to do anymore. The Bios is up to date, I tried flashing it - no change, tried diagnosing through Dell PC Doctor, it said the battery is healthy. Please help!!!

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 so today I factory restored my PC I done this loads of times in the past well today when I done it my PC turns on, loads up the files then send me to this error thingy where it's blue so I went to the PC store and they said it was a windows 7 error or what ever so I paid him 50$ for the guy to put in the CD and to fix the issue and the issue was solved but now I don't have any of my dell features like the weather thingy or dell safe system recovery what ever it was called and my pc screen is weird and big like a desktop like this and I can't change it back to default this is my screen http://prntscr.com/2r4lxq :L(not a normal laptop size) how can I factory restore again?

I have just upgraded my M4700 from windows 7 to windows 8.1 and the fingerprint reader driver cannot be installed.

I downloaded Dell Controlvault firware and driver from here http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/precision-m4700

This is what it looks like in device manager.

If I try to install the Dell Controlvault firmware from Dell website for W8.1 64bit, I get this message

If I try to install the Dell Controlvault driver, I get this message.

I know for sure that the fingerprint reader hardware is working since I used it right before I installed windows 8.1

So both installing driver or the firmware fails.

I am not sure what I should do from here, but if anyone had similar experience and could help me out, I would very much appreciate it!

Hi 

 About a week ago my elderly aunt's Inspiron N5110 ( bought new in December 2012  and running McAfee) was hacked with the result that the machine will now only operate in safe mode.  I have looked at the machine and suspect the hard disk will need reformatting, or restoring the operating system to its factory settings.  There is no data on the machine which needs backing up.

I have tried pressing F8 on start up but after trying some of the menu options the machine remains stuck in safe mode.   The restore option does not appear to work from within the safe mode environment and the machine will not boot in normal mode, possibly due to something the hackers have done.

The only disk provided with the machine was one containing drivers and utilities, although this would not run when I tried to boot the machine from the DVD drive, so I assume I will need an original Windows 7 disk to carry out a fresh install.

Since Dell no longer provide a system disk, how can I access the setup files on the machine's hard disk in order to make a boot disk, or is there another way to recover this machine without reformatting?

I just got my xps 14 laptop in the mail, and turned it on only to hear the fan come whirring on. It's terribly loud and noticeable. Could there be something wrong with the laptop?

In the fisrt place, I apologize for my poor english.

  Here is the matter : I ordered sixteen months ago on Dell's website a Vostro 3700, which I have used since then for my personnal use as much as for work needs, and which has worked absolutely fine for me one year long. But then it began to shut down after 2-3 seconds of an abrupt black screen when too much used with heavy applicatoins such as games or video creation software. I first suspected overheating, and that's still my guess today.

  I soon bought compressed air sprays in an attempt to get the fan unblocked, but saw no dust coming out (indeed I saw later that this was not the cause, since the fan and its grid seem almost perfectly clear). Then I tried with thermal paste. I opened the computer following the instructions on the site (using my service tag) and saw that there was paste over none of the chips, but all around. So I tried to gather it and put itback on the  CPU and the GPU. The Vostro began to work fine again form here, for approximately one month. I bought some new paste, removed everybit of the formerly used one, and replaced it (forming a fine layer), which got me a few days.

  Then I saw that the paste I had added had undergone the same movement as the prior one, i.e. it hadn't stayed on the chips but had slided around (or what hat staid on the chips had dissolved or whatever). I began to wonder whether it wasn't simply too hot within the computer, so I bought a cooler pad, a seemingly good one with three fans that I placed where the computer heated the most (CPU, GPU/fan, and in a lesser way the hard drive disk). Two months long I sensed my PC heating but not overheating anymore, and yesterday it happened again, two times in a row. I had let the womputer cool between, and had also upgraded my BIOS from version ??1 ton ??10, just in case, and followed the diagnostic at the boot which gave no error.

  Here I'm just lost, and don't know what to do any more, so I'm waiting for your advice.

P.S : Come to think of it, Windows logs only shows the cores stopping activity when it happens. I don't have heavy applications enough on Linux so no log there.

Hi all,

          I'm having a bit of a problem with my Dell Inspiron 1545. I recently bought a new battery for my Laptop but since I've had it, it will not charge. I then decided to buy a new AC Adapter. Still no joy though. I checked on the BIOS start up and it says my battery health is normal but the AC adapter is unknown. I've been reading up on the Dell website and it says that I may need to update my BIOS but I'm not able to download it until my battery is over 10% charged. The battery obviously won't charge so now I'm stuck. Anyone help please?

Dear Sir/Madam,

On Thursday 1/24 your Technician came by my workplace to replace the monitor on my Dell XPS 15 (L521X) and ever since then my laptop keeps getting stuck on the boot screen every time I try to start it. It takes about 5-10 trials to start it up now. Moreover, I noticed this almost as soon as he left so I called him back on his phone number and he told me that there was nothing he could do about it and that I should contact Dell instead. Then I tried calling the extension given to me several times, however, the case manager assigned to me appeared to be perpetually busy. Then on 2/06 he came back and replaced the motherboard and hard drive and left without even verifying if it resolved the problem. The boot problem still persists! Additionally these are the new issues that developed after he replaced these items:

a)      My laptop used to have 16 gigs DDR3 RAM and now it has only 8 gigs.

b)      I used to have an NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M (2 gigs) graphics card which I assume is missing too since it cannot be detected anymore.

c)      My system has also developed an audio problem now. The sound comes and goes at times.

d)      My system lacks a service tag since the motherboard was replaced.

Finally I shipped it off to your Depot and now the status says that it is on "Billable Hold"?!!! This is preposterous as all of these problems were CREATED by your service technician. Overall, I have to say that I am extremely disappointed in your customer service. I had purchased premium warranty and yet I feel like I have to jump through several hoops to get any service in the first place! I hope my case would be looked in to promptly and resoled fairly because otherwise I would have to resort to action given the treatment I have received despite having a laptop under warranty.

My inspiron 1721 wont start .i push the power button,the power Led lighted then the Led for majors letter flashes then after 1-1.5 minutes the laptop turn off.i dont know what´s the problem .Does somebody have expérience that problem.

I have a DELL XPS L502X with recently its hard disk not getting detected a week ago... With some movement  or so ... It finally detected .. This happened to me 3 times earlier but probably after an hour or so .. It was back to normal... But this time the same thing repeated , it could not move Out of  boot ... I found that from boot menu it shows FIXED HDD : none , which tells the hard disk is not getting detected .... 

  ITS been 2 days itz in the same state , fed up with it , I  am really concerned about the data in it . Can anybody please help me out with this problem .?

Hi ,
