E1505 DVD Drive Not Working

I just reset my Inspiron E1505 with the Windows 7 disc.

Everything is working fine, except for the DVD/CD Drive. It reads the Windows backup disc fine, but will not read any other disc. The drive spins the disc, but the disc is never recognized by the laptop.

I have done resets in the past, and have never had this problem.

The DVD/CD drive is the Pioneer dr-k17ya.

I have updated the driver to the most current according to the Dell service tag. I have also updated the BIOS.

Please help me, as I cannot seem to find any information anywhere online that is helping to resolve the issue.

How can I get this drive to work?

Inspiron 15-7537, did not come with the dual band wireless card?

Dell falsely advertised that Inspiron 7537 laptop had a dual-band wireless card. I bought top of the line Inspiron model only to find out about this little "mistake" when it was too late, the laptop arrived with a subpar single-band card that is super slow and drops connection frequently.
About probably 8 chats with Dell Customer "Care" and maybe four or five phone conversations with their tech "support" later, they didn't even pretend to try and work out a solution or to offer any assistance. Tech support sends me to customer care, customer care back to tech support, then it keeps bouncing around indefinitely, with occasional talks with Sales in the mix, too.

That's what you get from Dell after they've swindled you out of $1500+.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 14 N4050 .Recently I have watched some videos on youtube on "Adding External Graphics Card To Laptop", there I found an interesting one in the link "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktUw2VTFyX4".

Now I want to do some research on my laptop as shown in the video. So,can somebody tell me whether my laptop has a PCI-E slot on motherboard or not.

Also tell me where can I buy those devices(PE4L ver 1.5 with PM3N) shown in the video in Kolkata.

M18X R1 6990m CF option grayed out

On October 2013 my laptop gave up on me, 8 beeps upon boot. They sent a tech to try and fix my laptop. He changed the motherboard and LCD but failed and had to send it to the service depot where they changed the GPUs . When I got my laptop back, I powered it on just to check if it works and did not use it because I bought a desktop.

Last 2 weeks my friend came over and we decided to play league of legends, Me using the desktop and him using the m18x. We noticed that the Crossfire is disabled and grayed out. So I sent the laptop to service depot and they changed the mother board and the CF cable. Got the laptop back today and the CrossFire feature is still grayed out so I called again and for 1 hr the tech verified if i'm using the latest bios, uninstalled the drivers and CCC and did a clean install of the drivers and CCC but still didn't fix the laptop, Now I need to send my laptop back again to service depot.

Can anyone tell me or guide me as to what is the policy of DELL/ALIENWARE for replacing products or how to request for a replacement instead of sending my laptop back and forth and just hope it's fix.

Thank you.

Issues with switchable graphics on Windows 8.1

I own an Inspiron 14Z 5423, which came with Windows 8. The device has switchable graphics, which can be configure through the AMD Catalyst Control Center. However, after the upgrade to Windows 8.1, the AMD Graphics Card no longer works. If I set a program to run with the AMD Card (on the Catalyst Control Center), the program crashes. I can only run games, for example, with the Intel HD Graphics 4000. I tried reinstalling all drives from the CD that came with the computer, as wells as from the Dell website. None of them worked. I reverted back to Windows 8 and everything worked fine with the drivers provided on the CD. But now I am back to Windows 8.1 to try again. Invariably, the drivers provided on the Dell website never worked, on either operational systems. Has anyone had this issue adressed?

Conclusion: my AMD card is currently useless and I don't plan going back to windows 8, since the upgrade to 8.1 is not major and should not ruin the drivers. Also, it would be really nice if Dell could update the graphics drivers provided on the website to meet AMD's new releases.

Thank you.

Inspiron 15R SE (7520) update issues

Hi folks, new here and having some issues with 15R SE (7520) after updating to win 8.1

CCC and the Radeon video card don't seem to be working, which seems to be a common problem.

Went into support centre and entered my service tag etc to get updates, it shows me a list of about 15 recommended driver updates etc.

However installing those updates doesn't seem to achieve anything - if I install something, restart and go back into support centre it still shows the same 15 recommended updates for me to download/install, like they haven't installed at all.

Is there something obvious I'm missing, or is Dell's update process really that hopeless?

Vostro 3555 - Replaced DC Jack/VGA Board

The original DC jack will allow the laptop to run with the AC adapter (genuine Dell), but the battery does not charge.  There is also a crack in the plastic housing for the jack, and the round, plastic centerpiece that protects the pin is missing.  I ordered a new part (PFYC8), but the laptop would not power on.  In fact, the green power light on the AC adapter goes out as soon as I connect it to the DC jack.  If I remove the DC jack board and connect the AC adapter, the green power light stays on.  But as soon as I put the board in place...and press the motherboard into the DC jack board receiver...the green light goes out.  I ordered the same part from another supplier, but had the same result.  The original board still allows me to use the laptop; just cannot charge the battery.  Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on?  Thank you.

I have a laptop that does not display anything when I press the start button. It makes 7 loud beeps and then stops for a few seconds and repeats the process. Am I out a computer now? Warranty ended just over a month ago.

Dell XPS 15 Charging Issue

$

Hi there! I have a near-year-old Dell XPS 15 L502X laptop which has been giving me grief over the past few months, namely in the form of a 9-cell batterythat gives a "plugged in, not charging" string of errors. (Also, I'm running Windows 7)

Here are the issues I'm encountering:

(1) Upon startup, in white text on a black screen (appears after the loading screen with Dell logo, prior to Windows starting up screen):
"The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined.
The battery may not charge.
The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.
Please connect a Dell 130W AC adapter or greater for the best system performance.
Strike the F3 key (before F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning message again.
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility."

(2) Upon login, in a warning notification box from "Quickset"
"The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and battery will not charge. This problem might be solved by:
-Ensure the plug is inserted completely for best system operation.
-Connect a Dell 130W AC adapter or higher."

(3) When mousing over the battery icon:
"xx% available (plugged in, not charging)" where xx is a number depicted percentage battery remaining

(4) Dell "Battery Meter" information box (accessed via battery icon->more power options->Dell battery meter (left hand link))
"Battery Charging Disabled"

(5) BIOS (F2 setup utility) information
"AC adapter type: unknown" -- Accessed on the "Main" tab
"Adapter warnings: [Enabled]" -- Accessed on the "Advanced" tab
"Charger Behavior: [Enabled]" -- Accessed on the "Advanced" tab

Here is some information regarding my (unsuccessful) attempts to resolve the issue:

(1) BIOS have been updated to A11 (latest version).
(2) Laptop runs on battery alone, charger alone, and with both at the same time.
(3) Battery and charger are both the ones received new from my purchase from Dell.
(4) Cables appear to be in good condition, and are firmly seated.
(5) Dell Quickset was uninstalled and a fresh new version downloaded and re-installed.
(6) In the Device Manager, underneath "Batteries", the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" has
been uninstalled, reinstalled,
enabled, and disabled multiple times (including different times with varied restarts).
(7) One system of steps to solve the issue I attempted, and had success with once (but failed to work the past few times implemented) was:
- Disconnect the AC
- Shutdown the computer
- Remove the battery
- Reconnect the AC
- Startup the computer
- Uninstall the ACPI-Compliant Control as listed in (6)
- Shutdown the computer
- Disconnect the AC
- Insert the battery
- Connect the AC

At this point, I'm at a loss as to how to resolve this problem without buying replacement hardware, which I would really like to avoid. I've furiously searchedthrough multiple forums of "solutions," but haven't been able to find one that completely resolves the issue. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and have a fantastic day!

Inspiron N5110 "Plugged in, not charging"

I have an Inspiron N5110 and have a charging problem.  With my Dell AC adapter as well as with a like aftermarket ac adapter I can neither charge my battery or boot up my computer.  With a borrowed aftermarket 100W ac adapter, I can boot up my computer and it operates fine except I get a "plugged in, not charging" message above my battery icon.  I have replaced the daughter board that houses the ac plug with new.  I have purchased a new battery and get the same results.

Reading advice from a Dell technician in this forum, I updated my BIOS, only to then receive the "blue screen of death".  Yikes!  I had to reinstall my operating system just to make my computer usable again.  I thought that perhaps reloading the operating system would resolve my battery charging issues but no such luck.

I absolutely use my laptop for hours every day and am beside myself.  HELP please????

Dell M4800 Touchpad keeps turning itself back on

$

Having a strange issue with the Touchpad on my Dell Precision M4800. When I disable it using the Dell software or using the Fn+F5 hotkey, it has a tendency to come back on after a random interval of time. I want it to stay turned off permanently, as I prefer to use the Pointstick exclusively.

When using the Fn hotkey, I get a notification onscreen as well as a popup in the system tray saying "Touchpad notification: Your touchpad has been disabled." If I manually disable it through the Dell Pointing Devices software, I get the same effect, but without the notification. In either case, this works great... for awhile.

But then the Touchpad inevitably turns back on. I often don't notice until suddenly my mouse cursor is behaving erratically, at which point I try to swipe my finger on the touchpad and sure enough, it's become enabled again.

However after some further experimenting it turns out the "random" aspect of this is not totally random and I can reproduce the issue quite reliably by furiously scanning my finger back and forth across the Touchpad for a few seconds. Inevitably, the touchpad will turn back on, and I will get the notification "Your touchpad has been enabled." No buttons or hotkeys are pressed, all I have to do is move my finger on the touchpad surface rapidly and within seconds of starting to do that, it will re-enable itself. Again, there is also a notification that it has been re-enabled when this happens, so the software is detecting my finger movements somehow, perhaps I am accidentally performing some "magic gesture" that compels it to re-enable the touchpad.

If I don't intentionally try to cause this, it still turns on eventually, but can take a long time, half an hour or more before it becomes enabled again. I assume it's the activity of my palms resting on it that will accidentally turn it on again in the same way as swiping my finger intentionally across the disabled touchpad. It makes no difference whether the Dell Pointing Device software is open or closed and this will happen when any application is open.

All I want is for the touchpad to be truly disabled permanently and not accidentally turn on in the middle of my work. But at the same time I'd prefer to leave the pointing stick enabled, so I can't simply remove the driver. So far I've been using an external mouse and disabling all internal pointing devices, which works ok, but like I said I am fond of the pointing stick, I'd prefer to be able to leave it on with JUST the touchpad disabled.

Battery Meter: Desktop Mode Explanation/How It Works

$

0

Hi everyone,

Running Dell XPS-12 (i7 version).

I'm hoping someone can provide me with a plain English explanation of "Desktop Mode" in the battery meter options.  I have activated it, and it's working.  If i navigate to the Battery Status Tab it clearly says "Battery Charging Disabled" (with the current charge at 100%), no grey box or activation problems here as per other threads.

I have searched these forums for how Desktop Mode works and each thread trails off with no clear cut explanation.  The dell staff seem to think quoting what is written on the "Desktop Mode" tab is useful....well it's not.  The wording makes no sense and is too similar to the Longevity Mode to distinguish the difference. So please please please, can someone explain without quoting the "Battery will only charge between 50 and 100%" BS what enabling this actually does:

- Once charged, does my laptop then stop charging the battery completely, which is the equivalent to physically removing the battery, thereby only running on mains power but with the added advantage of having a battery backup if the power is interrupted?  (I hope this is the case, and it makes sense as this is truly a "desktop mode" for a laptop).

- When turned off/sleep mode, is it OK to leave the cable plugged in?  Does the computer 'remember' that it's not supposed to be charging the battery?  Would unplugging it be stupid as then the laptop will trickle power from the battery over night as it's not off, just in a low power sleep state?

- Why does the battery show 100% charge all the time?  Surely, if the battery is not being charged then it should slowly deplete?  Or does 'topping up' the battery periodically extend the life of it, and all this is done automatically?  I do also have longevity mode enabled; is that what's topping it up?

Thanks all, just want to maximize my battery life and hopefully help others by getting some clear answers!

Tom.

Message to dell:

There really should be more of a manual shipped with these machines like the old days.  Paying £1.8k for a laptop and to only have one A4 piece of paper as my instruction manual seems a bit tight, Dell.

The least you guys need to do is provide hyperlinks from the power options menu so FAQs like the above can be answered, and also change the wording of the power options, as it is obviously written by a tech who knew what he meant but nobody else does!

Kind regards,

Tom.

XPS L501X - Can't use HDMI to connect to external display. why?

Hi,

I've got a new XPS 15 L501X, with the NVidia GT 435M. When I plug-in an HDMI cable which is connected to a Samsung display (B2230), It recognizes it, allows to extend my display to it - but nothing appears on the display. It's like the signal is not getting to the external display, but I know it does - because the XPS does recognize the display.

Any ideas why this is so?

Thanks!

Disable "My Dell Downloads" popup

After numerous attempts i have finally figured out how to get rid of this darn message on my Dell XPS (Shame on you Dell for having such a annoying bug!!!). Here it goes:

1. Wait for the message to pop up

2. Open up 'Start Task manager' (Ctrl/Alt/Del)

3. Under the processes tab (should be defaulted to that) scroll all the way down or look for a file name called "Toaster.exe *32". The description should say "Dell DataSafe Local Backup"

4. Right click the file name

5. You can either select "End Process" which will turn the message off until the next time you log back in to your laptop. To permanently get rid of it carry on reading...

6. Select "Open File Location" instead of "End Process"

7. A new window will open and it should automatically highlight a file name called "Toaster"

8. Locate the file name "ToasterLauncher" which should be somewhere underneath the file "Toaster".

9. Finallyyyy Right Click the file and ENJOY pressing "DELETE" [If you want, you can delete all the "Toaster..." files]

10. Celebrate with some Capri Sun Orange Juice drink! (My favourite!)

11. You MAY NEED TO RESTART your laptop/pc to put it into effect!

12. If it works for you please spread this instruction around all forums so others can benefit! Free of charge! :)

Hope it helps folks. Let me know how it worked for you!

Regards

Aziz

How to tighten hinge on Precision M4700?

$

It seems that the lid hinge on my M4700 has gotten looser over the 5 months I had owned this laptop.

I would like to tighten it but I am not quite sure what the procedure is?

I did try to tighten the two screws below the hinge at the left and right back corner, but it will not get any tighter.

Any solutions to this? Thanks!

My Dell Downloads Popup not going away

The My Dell Downloads popup keeps popping up on my laptop every couple of minutes and won't go away.  I've done searches and seen this is a fairly common complaint, but none of the resolutions I've seen work for me.

I've tried visiting the site and even downloaded some software and still get the popup.  I try to choose remind me later and it pops up a minute later.  I try to choose don't remind me and it pops up a minute later.

Can someone please tell me how to get rid of this?

Also in general it is very bad programming to make a modal popup like this.  It is one thing for it to be annoying and coded poorly.  Its another thing to make it so it sits on top of all my other windows.  I would think that Dell wouldn't want to inconvenience their customers in this way.

My laptop is an Alienware M11x R2.
