Inspiron 17R SE with win 8.1 . trying to make it dual bootable by adding win 7 but i'm having issues.

Hello world..

I've shrunk the win 8 partition and created an additional partition and named it win 7....All went without a hitch .
I've rebooted from the cdrom drive (with the win 7 disc inserted) and all goes as planned .

I get to the 'install now' screen and accept the eula  and select 'custom' installation.

Still OK.

On the next window (where do you want to install windows) i select the partition (named windows 7) and then i click on 'load driver'.....

I am met with a window headed 'load driver' , the contents of the window are as follows.........
'To install the device driver needed to access your hard drive , insert the installation media containing the driver files , then click OK.
NOTE : the installation media can be a floppy disk , cd , dvd , or usb flash drive.
'

I've clicked 'next' and 'browse for file' (and looked around) but i cant find any drivers.
The result is a window called 'load driver' stating 'no signed device drivers were found , make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers , and then click OK'

I was told the following  ; "You need the sata drivers for the mobo. You should be able to get from manufactures site."

Some googling brought me the following page.........

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3524/t/19500097.aspx

I followed the instructions to the letter , now during the installation of window 7 when i am asked to load the drivers (that my 17R SE is lacking) i keep going round and around in circles.

I point the browser to the file (on a usb thumb drive) and the browser finds the file.........But the file fails and I keep going , like I said , in circles.

I want windows 7 on this laptop as the software I want to use is not compatible with windows 8 and there's no telling when , or indeed if , it will ever be supported by 8..

Inspiron 15R 3537 sleep/wake problem

$

Ordered an Inspiron 15R 3537 laptop online which I received on the 24/1/14. Have had constant issues with sleeping/waking since then. To start with the problem was that when the laptop was put to sleep, the screen went black but the power light would not flash, and when I attempted to wake the computer from sleep nothing could rouse it so I had to hold down the power button to shut it down before turning it back on. It seemed the laptop was not entering sleep at all.

There was also an issue when I attempted to shut the computer down via the normal method. When I did so the screen would go black but fans would continue whirring and the power light would stay on.

Researched problems on the internet and installed both amd and intel video card drivers and changed several settings in attempt to fix the issue.

It was resolved for a short time but now the laptop is having a similar but different issue. When I shut the lid it goes into sleep (ie the power button flashes and the screen goes dark) but when I lift the lid the computer acts as if it has just been turned on after being shut down (without me even needing to press any buttons).

Any help you can provide on these issues would be appreciated as it is very frustrating to have so many issues with a brand new computer!

Inspiron 15R SE 7520 - Win 8.1 - After Sleep Black Screen On Wake - Issue

I am currently having a black screen display after my laptop has gone to sleep and I restarting and/or taking out the battery in order to see the log-in screen.

I've researched resolutions and have found a suggestion to update the (1) Bios then (2) Chipset then (3) Video Card drivers in that order.

When I put in my service tag on the dell drivers page I am show nothing for Bios and the following for Chipset and Video.

Chipset

Where do I get the Bios update and which Chipset drivers should I install and in what order?

I've seen these posts but not of them are the answer:

Thanks,

Hi,

I just received a new XPS 15 Touch two days ago and am encountering BSOD on startup from rest.  I receive an error message saying "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart... IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".

When I look at my blue screen notifications, it says "The NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M driver (C:\Windows\system32\drivers\nlvddmkm.sys) appears to have caused a system crash.

I have tried updating this driver but I still get the problem.  Any help would be very much appreciated.  Just bummed my brand new laptop is encountering this problem.

Thank you!

E6540 Inadequate Thermal System! ATTN: Dell

$

Okay, so I have decided to revise this thread to accommodate the recent interest by customers who own this notebook.

Nutshell Explanation: The E6540 and its "one-fan" design is totally inadequate for properly cooling the i7-4800MQ and the AMD HD 8790M. The advertised specifications (2.7Ghz) are unobtainable during realworld and benchmark testing scenarios. The cooling system just can not handle the thermal footprint of the CPU/GPU.

Long Explanation: I have spent a lot of time and effort in researching this problem. Here are a few things I have discovered. First, Dell has a history with producing systems that can't handle the thermal requirements of the chips installed inside of them. One would think that Dell would learn from their mistakes... Second, the Latitude E series is probably an "end of life" model. Dell jumped the gun on the E6540 and failed to do the engineering. They assumed that the E6530 design could accommodate a CPU/GPU combination with a higher TDP than it's predecessor (E6530). Likewise, the E6540 was one of the first enterprise-grade Haswell notebooks. So I'm sure the pressure was really on at Dell to push this out of the door. These machines are inherently flawed. DOA! We have been scammed. For those of you who have upgraded to the 2.8Ghz model. You really got scammed! You will never be able to use that horsepower.

I have been a 15+ year Apple customer. This has been my first PC in a long time. Frankly, I'm very disappointed.

Now. Let me go ahead and leave a few links here that reference other forums/sources that discuss this issue:

As a customer, I have been instructed to 1) Update the BIOS 2) Reinstall Windows 3) Send in my machine for repair

I am looking at getting a dual band router and want to be sure if my Dell L502X can handle it. Somebody at work mentioned that it needs some kind of adapter. As always, I'd appreciate the help.

new XPS 13 Haswell Win7 AND 8GB RAM?

$

I see that the Windows 7 (non touch) version of the XPS 13 refresh with the Haswell chip only comes with 4GB of RAM. Is there a way to get it with 8GB, or to add 4GB after the purchase (ie is there a user-accessible open RAM slot)?

The machine looks promising, but 4GB seems like a non-starter, esp these days.

recovery disk to usb question

Today, while working on documents from my external hard drive I was reminded I needed to create a restore/recovery disk.  I figured I would just put the file on my external rather than digging for a usb drive.  It installed and immediately closed my open applications.  When I tried to re-open the files I was working on from my external my external drive now shows up only as SYSRECOVERY (U:) and when opened all that it shows is the recovery files, none of my other files that I know are stored on the external.  Any ideas how to remove the recovery disk software or to access what else is on the hard drive?  Thanks!

Inspiron 5521 touchscreen not working

Hi, I just ordered and received an Inspiron  15r 5521. It is supposed to have a touchscreen, but I've not been able to figure out how to turn it on.

The laptop came with Windows 8 which is new OS to me, so I may just be missing it, but I did find the Pen and Touch settings and when I click on it, it gives me an error stating "Tablet and Pen Settings is unavailable. For assistance, contact the manufacturer of your tablet or computer. (error=0).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Update: I just came back to this question and realized it wasn't answered.  It turns out BestBuy had incorrectly listed the notebook. I ended up having to take it back to BestBuy and exchange it for a different model.
