Hi,

I have an Inspiron 15R with an Intel HD Graphics 1st generation and I'm looking for a laptop for gaming, but I want a laptop with Number Pad on the right, but can't find one...

Is it possible to personnalize our laptop to have a good Nvidia Graphic card and with a 1080p screen (and 15") with Number Pad?

thx a lot

Dell Inspiron 7000 (7537) random restarts from Ubuntu USB

$

Sorry in advance for this lengthy post but I am trying to include as much information as possible so that it might help others.

Some background:

I purchased this Dell 7537 laptop recently with the intention of installing Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit in a dual boot mode with Windows 8. I know there's a few hoops to jump through in order to succeed, but I've used Ubuntu for several years now and know what to expect.

This is not what this post is about though. It's to compare notes with anyone who may have encountered a particular problem with this laptop in trying to do the same.

I've already taken steps to return my laptop as it's less than 2 weeks old but would happily change it to a replacement if it can be shown that it's only my laptop that has the problem/fault.

If nothing else, it may be useful to others that follow as I've been unable to find anything about this just by Googling.

The Problem:

I intended to just use the Ubuntu startup USB disk for a week or two to satisfy myself that it all worked as expected before committing to an install. It's when I shut the Ubuntu system down that the laptop would randomly restart again within 5 seconds.

This was not a rare occasion but at it's worst, it would do it every second shutdown. I've done a lot of testing to try to solve the problem and will outline that shortly, but I will add that random restarts also occurred with the installed Windows 8, albeit infrequently. I tried all the fixes I found for preventing Windows from doing that, like turning off WOL and restarts due to system problems at shutdown, but still it did it.

What I have done is a LOT of booting and shutdowns of Ubuntu trying to find the problem and have come to the conclusion that it is some kind of electrical interference, particularly on the USB ports at the left. I do have an electronics background so am fairly confident in saying this. It could be that my motherboard has missed out on some vital filtering components during assembly, or it could be a common problem and therefore a shortcoming in design. Either way, it may not be something that would be noticed under normal circumstances but I have no way to tell.

I will also add that this problem only occurs with the AC adapter plugged in and turned on (we use 240V in this country). It does not occur when on battery power alone, or with the adapter in but turned off.

These are the results I obtained:

The worst affected USB port is the one closest to the AC adapter input on the left hand side.

When booting from there with my power adapter on it would restart once every two shutdowns, on average. The port on the right hand side that I tried had zero restarts out of twenty shutdowns and didn't seem to be affected at all!

When I realised this I immediately suspected the power adapter as being “electrically noisy”, but this is only half the story.

I tried another Dell adapter which was exactly the same as mine but a year older. It still caused random restarts but less than half the number of mine.

I tried an even older HP adapter with similar “less than half” results .

So, while the substitute adapters seem electrically quieter than my adapter, I still got random restarts on the left hand side USB ports.

Incidentally, if anyone gets infrequent random restarts with Windows 8 after trying all the “usual” fixes, it could be a “noisy” adapter causing it. I suspect my Win8 wouldn't restart at all if I changed the adapter for a less noisy one. But that's not solving the whole issue for me.

I also tried using a different USB flash drive as a Ubuntu startup disk but got much the same results as before.

Conclusion:

If someone else is able to try this experiment of booting and shutting down a Ubuntu USB startup disk a number of times from the USB port closest to the power adapter, with it plugged in and turned on, it may help others in the future.

I know that I could boot or install Ubuntu from the non-noisy port on the right hand side, but that's not the issue. It's the long term reliability of using the left hand side ports for anything at all. Could data integrity be compromised on occasions, for example? You might not know till it's too late.

Inspiron 14Z 5423 Failed BIOS Flash

I had a problem where the laptop stopped closing down properly.

The operating system would shutdown, but the Power LED, Network LED, and fan would continue until I held the power switch down for a few seconds.

I noticed that there was a new BIOS A08 (currently A06 on this laptop) that solved S4/S5 issues (I thought this may have something to do with it).

However, when I started the BIOS update, the machine went into the state mentioned above during the update, and I had to power it off manually.

This action seems to have caused an issue as the laptop will no longer boot.

Now, when I press the power button,

  • The Power light comes on
  • The three buttons on the right light up in the following sequence: 1, 2, 3, 2, 1, 1+2, 1+2+3, all off.
  • The cd seeks to zero (I guess thats what it is doing).
  • The fan comes on.

Then all switches off except the power LED, and the laptop emits a sequence of three beeps, pause, three beeps. This goes on...

I can only assume I have messed up the BIOS update and need to fix this.

From several searches, the suggestion is that I can create an emergency BIOS update disc/USB stick. However, I have not been able to get information on how to create this recovery disk. All I have at the moment is the windows bios update file, 5423A08.exe.

Can anyone help before I have to call DELL support ?

Inspiron 17R-5720 will not start or charge

My Inspiron 17R 5720 will not turn on. I've tried holding the power key down and turning my laptop on using only the power adapter, but no luck. The major symptom is the green light in the power adapter is on until I plug it into my laptop, then the green light goes out. The laptop LED does not light up at all and the laptop makes no sound.  I tried steps below in case it was related to a static buildup:

You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available.

  • (1) Turn off the computer.
  • (2) Remove all the external peripherals, like AC adaptor, battery, flash drives, etc.
  • (3) Press and hold the power button for 30sec, it releases the static on the computer (if any).
  • (4) Now put back the battery and plug in the AC Adaptor.
  • (5) Let the computer charge for sometime.
  • (6) Try turning on the computer.

Steps were suggested to someone else who had this exact same problem. As in his case, this didn’t work for me. I tried a spare power adapter that has worked in the past – it doesn’t work either.

Suggestions?

Inspiron 3721 - Do I need to update Intel HM76 chipset driver to HM77?

According to Dell's driver analysis tool, I'm supposed to install the Intel HM77 chipset driver and the Intel Management Interface Driver. However, when I looked into Device Manager I saw that I have Intel HM76 chipset. Is this update recommendation correct? Appreciate the help. I have a Dell Inspiron 3721 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Inspiron N5110 not waking from sleep or shutting down

$

I've been having some problems with my Inspiron 15R N5110. Whenever I close the lid to put it into sleep mode, the screen turns off but the fan kicks in and it doesn't go to sleep. When I open the lid again, the screen is still off and the power button light and 'screen off' button light are illuminated. Absolutely nothing wakes it from this state except a hard reset. This problem has been happening for a while, but it was so infrequent that it never bothered me, now it's suddenly happening everytime I close the lid or select sleep/hibernate from the start menu. (Conveniently, the warranty ran out a few weeks ago..). It's also no longer shutting down or restarting, the windows 'shutting down' screen displays for a few seconds, then the screen turns off and the fan kicks in. Again, the only way to turn it off is to hold the power button.

I've tried everything under the sun to fix this. Updated every driver, updated BIOS, played around with and changed every power option I can find, ran every diagnostic test, tried a clean boot and booting safe mode (the problem persists in both cases). I've tried a system restore, but because the system won't shut down, system restore never completes, not even in safe mode. The only option left (besides throwing the damn thing out the window) is to reinstall windows 7, but I'm reluctant to do that if it isn't going to fix my problem. Anyone know what's going on and if there's a way to fix it? And if it is a hardware issue, what options have I got with Dell since I'm out of warranty?

Inspiron N5110 Screen Freeze on Startup

$

My Inspiron N5110 will not start.  When I turn it on, the display sometimes comes on and then immediately distorts with static lines and then freezes.  Most of the time the computer turns on but nothing displays on the screen and it just starts beeping.  I tried running diagnostics on startup but could never get to the point where I could select anything.  The screen just freezes.

I assume this is hardware but what else can I do to test?

Thanks!

Num Lock not staying on Inspiron 7737

I have a Dell Inspiron 17 7737 running Windows 8.1.

The Num Lock does not stay on after a log off and back on or after a re-boot.

In the past, I have resolved this issue with a quick visit to the BIOS.  I have searched the BIOS, but I can't find anything related the Num Lock.

Everything is up to date and numerous Google searches have yielded no results.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Touchpad gestures/scrolling/pointer not working after windows 8.1 update on Dell Inspiron 11 3137

Just got a brand new laptop, Dell Inspiron 11 3137, and updated to windows 8.1. The touchpad does not work properly now; gestures/scrolling/pointer not working. I've spent over 16 hours getting windows 8.1 installed and then troubleshooting this issue. I've contacted Dell; updated the driver from Dell, even tried installing the latest driver from Synaptic. I even tried setting the Synaptic app to run under the windows 8 version.

Touchpads have been around a long time. It's the last thing I expect not to work properly.

At this point I am ready to send the laptop back and call it quits on windows.

Can anybody help with this?
