Greetings,

Pardon me if this has been asked before.

Is the DELL disk P/N 00WK4   ("Re-installation DVD") for Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit  a real installation disk or does it rely on the existing hard drive to install Windows 7 operating system?

Many Thanks,

Scot

Dell Inspiron 3537, few problems

$

Hi.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3537 few weeks old. Originaly was Win8, but I update it to Win8.1.

After I registered laptop, next step was to partition my C: partition on two parts, partition C (OS), and D (Data). After that I successfully installed all programs I need. And after few days problems started with few BSoD. There are few problems and I will explain all of them.

My Dell checkup "Blue screen troubleshooter" reporting every few days one or more BSoD with explanation:
"The unknown driver (C:Windows/system32/drivers/atikmdag.sys) appears to have caused a system crash. Complete the tasks below to help prevent unexpected shutdowns in the future."

On same My Dell checkup I try to run "PC Checkup", and everything appear OK, no problems reported. Custom scan on only ATI video card (ATI Radeon HD8850), and result is "Passed".
I also run build in DELL diagnostics (Boot menu) and there was no errors, and also Dell online diagnostics and everything was fine.

I try to install new driver from DELL website (AMD Radeon HD 8850M driver 13.151.0.0), but during installation, screen blinked few times and then went off. I thought that this is OK since video driver was installing. I left Laptop for one hour to "finish installation" but noting happened. I turned off laptop by pressing ON/OFF button for 5 sec, but after that laptop don't want to restart. Here I noticed other problem I will share with you in the moment. Fortunately, I installed Acronis True Image 2014 so I was able to restore a system. BTW, same driver version was already installed acording to "MSINFO32).

Now, my system is running, I can still see BSoD warning  in My Dell Checkup, but actually I don't actually see this BSoD. Strange.
If I right click on desktop and then click on "Graphics Property" or "Configure switchable graphics" I get this warning:

Second problem. During my laptop beforehand explained "BLACKOUT", I tried to use Windows Recovery. I tried "Refresh" and "Reinstall" and both times I got message:

"Could not find the recovery environment. Insert your Windows installation or recovery media, and restart your PC with the media".

If I try to use "Dell Backup and Recovery", I got message:

"Dell Backup and Recovery has not been able to detect the recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted. To recover your computer to the original factory state and restore the Recovery partition, please use your System Recovery Disc." etc...etc...

I don't have any of this discs coz OS was preinstaled. So, basically I can't use any facilities to recover my laptop because I don't have factory recovery media or recovery disc. Fortunately I'm using Acronis, but that's not a point. I want something to recover my system to original, factory state.

Actually, Windows Restore facilities are OK and I can restore to some point I created.

BTW, my hard drive is partitioned on 7 partitions. Originally there were 6 partitions with huge C: partition. I split this one on two.

And also, since this BSoD is likely caused by video driver, how can I safely update this driver. As explained before, after first try I had disaster. Can I try to install new driver for AMD Radeon HD 8850M from ATI site?

Sorry for so long question. If there are any additional questions I will be more than happy to answer them.

Hopefully I will get some answers, thank's in advance!!

Dell Inspiron 15 3521 HELP!!

Just last week, my Dell Inspiron crashed. I turned it on, and an error screen booted up of this:

It was not the same error code displayed on this image.

Anyways, after the blue screen popped up, my computer shut down. I booted it back up, and all it does now is say "Checking Media [Fail]" twice, then it says "No bootable device found. Press any key to reboot..."

Please help, I don't want to go out and buy a new HDD because I know this is an error in the Bios. I looked in the boot menu, and in the UEFI boot mode, there is only "UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6" and "UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4", no HDD or Windows Boot Manager. Please respond, I just got this computer for my birthday and I really don't want to go without one for a while.

Dell D430: compendium of display problems

I have a D430 that I keep for "emergency" purposes, and it seems to be very much on its last legs, display-wise.  But as it's the only thing I have that runs Windows, and Blackberry Desktop Manager only runs on Windows, and my Blackberry is 552'd...

First problem is the laptop display backlight is broken.  I gather this is a very tricky amateur replacement, and getting a whole new screen seems not like an economic repair.  Fair enough, so I've been using an external display.

Second problem is that the external display now is only "blue monochrome".  This is a recent development, and I can confirm that it's only the external display, and nothing to do with the monitor itself.  However, the same problem occurs with both the VGA connector in the laptop, and the replicated port in the docking station.  Is there some candidate internal connector that might be loose, or misaligned, that might plausibly produce this symptom?

Third problem is especially vexing given the first two.  If I boot up to Linux (Fedora 16), it automatically shadows the display to the external monitor.  However, in the flash screen, grub menu, and from Windows (if I fumble my way into it blind), there's no echoing at all.  Fn-F8 produces no response whatsoever.  So I'm completely stuck for getting any viewable display for Windows, which is the whole point of the exercise.

Before I give up, bin the whole thing, and sob on some friends' shoulders to borrow some Windows machine time to get this task accomplished, any ideas for possible remedies for either the second or the third issue?

XPS13-9333 Dual External Monitor Support

Can the new XPS13 (with the 4th Gen i7 and Intel HD4400 chipset) be able to run two external monitors at 1920x1200?

I figured one via miniDP and the other USB3 to DP.

The hardware can do it but I'm want to know if there have been any hardware/firmware restrictions put in place (due to heat control, power usage etc) that would prevent this setup.

Does anyone have a not noisy machine? Is the potentially whiny coil on the motherboard?

I hold down Fn then press PrtScrn.  A screenshot is supposedly taken.  Where does the image end up?  I can't search by name as I don't know the temporary file name. 14z 5423

Monitor Freezing, then fading to white, Dell XPS L502X

Hi all, I currently have a Dell XPS L502X laptop, running Windows 7 Home premium 64-bit. A couple of months ago, this laptop was dropped from my bed to the floor. At the time, everything functioned as normal. However, about a month later, the screen began to freeze, then slowly fade to white. When the screen is tilted or moved however, it would function properly again.

As of recently, the screen has been doing this a lot more frequently. It has also began to show numerous vertical white lines on the left hand side of the screen, which was the side it had been dropped on. After doing a bit of reading and research, I think it might be that the cable connecting the screen to the motherboard may be loose. I am yet to contact the dell support hotline, which I intend to do tonight, but any help with this issue would be awesome.

Any suggestions?

Screen remains black and fan run loud

Hey guys I need some help.

Yesterday I decided to change the thermal compound on my Dell XPS 15 L502X so for the first time I've been following some guide on how to remove every part from my laptop till I get to the heatsink so I did everything like it was there, I've removed the battery with a non metal and so on ... so after I changed the thermal compound I clean the whole laptop with an air spray very carefully and double checked that everything is OK. So I started to place the parts back again and when I tried to turn on my laptop black screen remains and fan speed is running at very high RPM. What should I do? Btw I forgot to mention that my battery died long time ago so I still haven't bought any battery I am just running on the AC adapter.

Inspiron 5537 100% HDD usage

Hi,

I have a 2 months old Inspiron 5537, with which I have problems ever since buying it.

After booting into Windows (7 or 8.1, the same happens), my HDD works on 100% from 5 to even 20(!) minutes, leaving the notebook unuseable for that time. This only happens after installing Dell drivers (even after a clean Windows reinstall, when only Dell drivers are installed yet), tried some uninstalls/reinstalls, nothing worked. On any Linux distro, or without Dell drivers, the problem is not present.

Please help!

Thanks in advance,
Gabe Gray

Hi all,

i have a Dell Inspiron N5030 which is a couple of years old. It's been working fine, i shut it down as usual in the week and went to switch it on yesterday. Now when I switch it on it just shows a mostly black screen, although the top couple of inches are grey/white. It also beeps loudly, it does 8 short beeps then silent for a few seconds, then 8 short beeps... And keeps doing this.

Ive vey tried removing the battery and holding the power switch down before connecting the power lead and switching on again, but I just keep getting the same beeps and black screen.

can anyone help?

thanks, Ewan.

Inspiron 11 3000 Series (3137) 8gb RAM?

$

I'm looking to upgrade the ram on the newly released inspiron 11 3137. The laptop has one dimm slot that is also user accessible. It is currently only shipping with 2gb of ram. I realize the manual states it can support up to 4gb of ram, but has anyone tried adding a single 8gb stick?

It comes with win8 64 bit, and packs a recently released 4th gen haswell celeron. I'm thinking it may support an 8gb stick, but don't want to order without confirmation that someone has gotten it to work.
