Dell USB-C to USB Cable

$

I recently bought a new XPS 9350 (laptop 2) which has USB-C ports.  The laptop shipped with a USB-C adaptor.

I already had an existing XPS 9350 (laptop 1) which was just over a year old and has a USB-C port as well as standard USB.

I used the USB-C cable which shipped with laptop 2 to plug into laptop 1 to back up the data onto an external hard drive.  Within 5 minutes of each other, laptop 1 stopped working and my external hard drive corrupted.

I spoke to Dell and they were very good and agreed to repair laptop 1 under warranty as it was only just over a year old.  I got it back yesterday and they have replaced the motherboard.  I wasn't so lucky with my external hard drive - I have lost all the data and been quoted £350 to recover it

My question is, could it be that the adapter corrupted both products or is it just a horrible coincidence?

I tried to speak to Dell about it, but I don't think they really understood what had happened.  I'm really nervous about continuing to use the adaptor since but I also don't want to buy a cheap alternative that might also cause damage.

Fan Runs at High Speed when External Monitor is Connected

Hello,

I have DELL Latitude E6420

When I connect external monitor either through VGA or HDMI port, the fan starts running at high speed, below 4K to maintain rising temperatures. See screenshot below;

I tried changing desktop background, thinking it has to do with photo resolution but that didn't do anything.

What causes this exactly? As soon as I connect to VGA/HDMI, fan starts running at high speed.

Dell Precision M6700 won't turn on after webcam replacement

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a no boot issue on my Dell Precision M6700?

I recently replaced a dead webcam on my Precision M6700, which involved a lot of digging in the machine to get to the connector. Since reassembling the machine, I'm struggling to get it to boot. I found a recommendation on the internet for laptops that won't boot:

Remove the CMOS battery.
Unplug the power cord.
Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to fully drain all residual power.
Put the CMOS battery back in, make sure you put it in correctly.
Plug in the power cord.
Power up.

I tried this, and the machine immediately turns on for two seconds, then off. If I then press the power button, it boots like normal and the new webcam works. However, when I shut down the laptop, it will no longer boot and I have to repeat the instructions above.

I have ordered a new CMOS/BIOS battery on the internet, because I wondered if this was the issue. Any help would be gratefully received!

Thank you

James

Hello! I have a Latitude E7450 (Full HD non-touch) and I noticed that when I look my laptop screen at an angle I can see stains which I can't notice when I look at my screen directly.

The laptop lid is usually closed since I have a docking station. I don't know if I always had this issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks all

Precision Mobile 5510 will not hibernate following 1709 update

I upgraded my 5510 to 1709, and now it refuses to hibernate. When I tell it to hibernate, instead it comes back to the lock screen and Airplane mode is on. Hibernate worked find before the 1709 update.

There was some connection to Power Manager; after the upgrade, the system wouldn't even shut down from the GUI; that problem was fixed by removing Power Manager (which wasn't really working anyhow) and changing the power profile from the Dell profile to balanced. Now it refuses to even install Power Manager (The application is not supported on your system. Aborting installation. Error: 25025).

Normally "powercfg /requests" doesn't say anything; occasionally, I catch it giving the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg /requests
DISPLAY:
None.

SYSTEM:
None.

AWAYMODE:
None.

EXECUTION:
None.

PERFBOOST:
[DRIVER] Legacy Kernel Caller
Power Manager

ACTIVELOCKSCREEN:
None.

Note that Power Manager is not installed (though it used to be)! Maybe Power Manager is not the Dell Power Manager.

All drivers and BIOS are at their latest versions.

A similar problem was reported at http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4997/t/20023646 ; however, the favored solution there (RTC reset via the power button hold) doesn't seem to work on the 5510 (it appears to be a feature introduced on the 5520...). I tried a reset to factory in the bios and that didn't help.

I ran "powercfg /hibernate /type full".

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\CsEnabled is 0.

"Turn on fast startup" is not checked.

Sleep is disabled (group policy, out of my control).

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

XPS 15 9550 won't turn on after shutdown for several hours, can turn on only when plugging in the charger for at least a half day

Hello everyone,

It seems that my XPS 9550 has a motherboard issue. I have got this laptop for several months before this problem happen. At first, the power button needs to pressed twice before the computer can turn on. Pressing it once will only cause the button to light up and fans to start spinning for only seconds. Then, after about a week, the problem got worse. I have to static discharge the BIOS and charge the computer for about 12 to 24 hours to get it working again. The light indicator did show that the CMOS battery is dead several times, and I had the CMOS battery replaced, but still no luck. I have run the diagnostics many times, but everything seems perfect. And I can get into the OS once the computer powers on.

en.community.dell.com/.../

This post points out a similar problem, but I think it has nothing to do with the battery or most of the motherboard components.

Does anyone have encountered this before? Any advice will be appreciated.

XPS 9360 - BIOS 2.4.2 causes hard drive problems

$

I updated my XPS 9360 (i7 7500, 16gb, 512 toshiba ssd) to the new BIOS version 2.4.2 from 2.3.1.

Every time I reboot the system with hard drive controller set in AHCI mode, Support Assist returns me "hard drive not installed" after displaying the Dell logo at the POST. After that, the notebook powers off and when I restart it, everything goes smoothly without any problem. The problem does not occur if I completely shutdown the XPS and then turn it on.

I'm very disappointed with it because I would like to install Ubuntu along with Windows 10 and the only way to do that is setting up AHCI mode.

Moreover, when the hard drive controller is set to RAID, the error does not show up while rebooting.

Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

Policy is to change passwords every month so they do not remember it.

Sometimes main manager just gettings laptops and when he got few he will send to IT support (Me)

I do not have any USB file

I have main admin passwords from other IT support who left company but I cant use it because first you must add user name / domain / password/

We do not need data from this hdd's any more but we needs laptops to run for tests in Production.

Is there any Program we can run and connect hdd by USB and use main password to unlock it?

 Thanks

Dozen or so laptops all failing to wake from sleep after installing Windows 10 1709 Update

I have multiple Inspiron 7569 systems that do not work correctly after install the 1709 update. When waking from sleep, the display just shows random black & white lines. I also have multiple Inspiron 7353 systems that exhibit the exact same behavior with the 1709 update installed. Dell lists both models as tested for this update.

In 100% of cases:

  • Rebooting and using F12 to run diagnostics shows no hardware problems
  • Using Dell Update to check for updates says the machines are up-to-date
  • Rolling Windows back to 1703 immediately fixes the problem

Given the number of machines and complete consistency in behavior it seems overwhelmingly likely there's a software or driver compatibility problem here. Is the list of compatible models simply wrong? Are the software updates needed to fix this problem distributed through some channel other than the normal Dell Update? Something else?

XPS13 2 in 1 stuck on Dell logo

Hello.

I just bought my wife a XPS13 and wanted to update the BIOS.

It seems as though it was finished, but it is stuck on the Dell logo.

I can go into the bios setup by pressing F2, but I don't know what to do form here.

Is there anything I can do there to change so it will boot into Windows 10?

I've tried to safe boot, but it won't boot.

I've tried the Fn + Power and that didn't work either.

I tried F8, but that also gets stuck on the Dell logo with the "F12 to setup" screen.

Any help will be appreciated as my wife could possibly spank me for ruining her laptop... :(

XPS13 2 in 1 not booting :(

Hello there.

I don't know if the previous thread was made available on this forum, so I'm staring another one just in case.

I have a XPS13 2 in 1 that I bought for my wife.

I tried to update to the latest bios and since then it is stuck on the Dell logo.

When I waited for it to boot, I heard a single "beep". From what I read it's a motherboard failure. I tried to go into diagnostic mode by pressing F12, but the blue bar is stuck and won't go any further.

However, it does go into UEFI setup.  Is there anything I can do in the UEFI setup?

I have no idea what else I can do.  If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I thank you in advance.

Hey! I've been looking for a monitor for my work station and I feel like U3415W or U3417W would be great monitor for me. The thing that made me question it was that it said that the monitors is not compatible with any XPS, just Latitude and Precision. So my question is whether the monitors works good with my XPS 5-9550 laptop?

One of my ram slots has gone bad. I am using an 8gb stick in the good slot, but I would like to max my ram if possible.  I know that the max memory is 16gb, but does anybody know if the computer will be able to use one 16gb stick? I am having trouble finding out if there is a max amount of ram per slot. Thanks in advance!

I started the laptop and it surprised me by indicating it was going through a hardware test.  When finished it indicated that there were no hardware problems.

Next what appeared n the screen was as follows:

AUTOMATIC REPAIR

Your pc did not start correctly.  Press RESTART to Restart Your PC which can sometimes fix the problem.  You can also press Advanced Options to try other options to repair your pc.

When I click on RESTART, the Dell Logo appears and the circle starts up and after about a minute, the  screen goes black for a few seconds and the Dell Logo then re-appears and then a message appears stating "PREPARING AUTOMATIC REPAIR" and the circle starts up for about a minute and then another message appears stating "DIAGNOSING YOUR PC" and the circle starts up again for less than a minute and then the original message re-appears:

Your pc did not start correctly.  Press RESTART to Restart Your PC which can sometimes fix the problem.  You can also press Advanced Options to try other options to repair your pc.

This cycle repeats itself over and over and over and over - no matter how many times I restart the computer.

If I click on ADVANCED OPTIONS, a blank screen appears and remains on indefinitely.

PLEASE HELP!!!
