Extra hdd in inspiron 17r model 5737 dvd caddy issue

0
0

I have recently bought a inspiron 17 R ( model 5737 ). And i replaced the hdd with a solid state disk (240 Gb). I now want to replace the dvd drive with the original 1 Tb sata disk in a caddy. the ssd is working fine, but the 1tbyte disk in the caddy does not show in windows ( i'm booting from the ssd). The 1 tbyte disk in the caddy is showing in the BIOS, so the hardware seems fine.

can anyone tell me how to get this working? The bios is up to date and when i put the 1 tb disk back in the main slot it works just fine.

Thanks,

erwin

Inspiron N7110 black screen

We have the Inspiron N7110, bought in April, so in use 6 to 7 months.

My in-law's have the computer in the Philippines and had been using it without issue since brand new.  A few nights ago the computer was being used and was shut down normally.  The next morning on trying to power on, the screen flashed white that went immediately black.   Shutting the machine off and turning on again, the screen never displays Dell or Windows logos (never displays anything) just immediately turns black.   Computer lights are on so the machine has power and is working, just no display at all.

I've read the forums, troubleshooting and diagnostic recommendations.

Can not start in safe mode, as pressing F8 or pressing F12 both produce same result (no display, computer just seems to start up but with black screen).

Ran monitor BIST (built in self test) and this DOES work.  The screen flashes several different colors, however the machine does not start up.

If a Dell support rep replies here, I can provide any further details including the service tag.

Thanks,

    Frank

B130 Pins SvcHost.Exe - Even After Repeated Rebuilds of OS

0

I've had a Dell Inspiron B130 for years. I but it new from Dell.
It doesnt do too much for a living - some office apps, some quicken, some browsing.
When it get's sick, I usually just move my data off and rebuild it with the supplied CD.

Lately, svchost.exe began pinning.
I tried a number of options and could not figure it out.
So I offloaded my data and I am rebulding it.

I have pretty canned instructions that I use.
They have always worked.
But I still have a pinned svchost.exe on almost everything.

My Procedure is attached.
Any help would be apprecited.

Here's the Overview
===================

0    copy your data from the machine
1    install xp again  - boot using F12 - then boot from Dell supplied disk
        (long format the drive )

2    Install Drivers  (I have these on a stick)
        1. Dell Notebook Software (R120775)
        2. Intel Chipset (R114079)
        3. Intel Video (R128346)
        4. Conexant (R90851, R114200)
        5. Broadcom (R108904, R150593)
        6. Audio (R171789)
        7. Wifi for me it's  R115321

3    Connect to router - Attempt Windows Updates - Over and Over
This used to just work in previous rebuilds
Now it will not start the update.
It says My machine is not at a correct level (though this always worked before)

So, I just run the SP3 update directly (from a stick). That does install .

Then, I try to do a windows update.

Now, I can get to the site, and I begin to do an Express Install, but svchost.exe just pins at 100% again.

I've tried a few different tweaks on this process but no luck.

Any ideas ?

Thanks...

...Mike

Latitude E5530, Unknown Device, Dev. Mgr

I just dropped our corporate 64-bit Windows 7 image onto a new E5530.  This system is considered "unknown" (non-standard) in our environment, so the image was missing a good portion of drivers. I downloaded all the drivers from  http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/04/servicetag/xxxxxxx    after having set the OS to 64-bit Windows 7 and turned off the filter so I could see "all drivers".  After installing almost every file from that page, I still have an unknown device under Other Devices.   If I look at the properties for Unknown Device, Details tab, Hardware Ids category shows 3 lines, all starting with "IUSB3\ROOT_HUB30&VID...".  Does anyone know to what this refers and which driver I need to resolve its "unknown" status?  Thanks much,

NEVER going to buy a Dell EVER AGAIN!! Letter to Dell.

Ever since the first month I got my Dell laptop,Dell inspiron N5040, It started to give me issues. I've been a Dell customer for around ten years; for my business use along with my personal use. My issue with the peice of junk laptop was that it was shutting down randomly. I didn't call into techinical support at the time because it was that frequent and didn't bother me much at the time since it was onl once a week. Well, I guess it was the worst mistake of my life! After time went on, over the next few months, the issue became more frequent, from once a week to 5 times a week. The laptop went through every possibel attempt of being fixed; from reinstalling the operating system to depot service and having "every single component checked".bviously Well, they obviously didn't do that since the first two hours of usage of the laptop since the depot service ended with a unexpectely shutdown. I've been calling Dell for the past 2-3 months about this issue and it still hasn't been fixed. Now, I want Dell to replace this laptop with a new one for this defective one and they refused! I didn't want one refurbished because i recieved one last time my other dell laptop went died and it died completey after 1 month of normal use. I called in again and they sent me  new replacement. I wonder why they're not willing to do the same thing this time, send me a new replacement instead of me wasting more time in the future and having to experience the process all over again?! This is the last straw for me and if I don't get the new computer, I'm taking some legal action with my friend whose a lawyer and Never going to buy a Dell ever in my life and discourage other people too as well. I been using Dell for again, over the past 10 years for my business as well as personal use. I guess Dell doesn't want to keep a loyal customer!! Now, AGAIN, I ask you Dell, are you going to send me a new replacement for this defective peice of junk?!

documents moved into somewhere that I don't have access to.

Windows failed to start

Hello Dell community,

I have a Dell laptop running Windows Vista Home edition. I am aware that vista isn't a very good operating system but that's besides the point. My problem is that when I turn it on the Dell logo appears on the screen and it begins loading. However when it tries to start up windows it gives me a message. It says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose start Windows normally." Then it gives me two options. I'd like to fix this problem soon so RSVP.

Inspiron 15R N5110 Experiencing Random Shut-downs and Refuses to Power Up

This is a fairly recent issue that has been occuring to me. I'm using my laptop and it just suddenly turns off. No shut down process, no error messages, it just simply turns off. I try to turn it back on by pressing the power button but it doesn't turn on. This has happened to me regardless of whether I have it plugged in with a charger or not.

After like 15-20 minutes I can turn the laptop back on, but it seems to be an ambiguous amount of time before this error happens again. Sometimes I can use the laptop just fine for hours on end, other times it doesn't last 5 minutes!

When my laptop is refusing to turn on, I tried plugging in my charger but the light indicator for the charger on my laptop didn't turn on. I know my charger works perfectly fine (used on a friend's laptop to check). Is this an error with my AC adaptor jack or is it some other problem?

My laptop is still under warranty and I just don't believe it's a hard drive error so I was wondering if anybody else had the same problem/found a solution.

Laptop Touchpad and Photoshop

Hi all

I've recently updated my Alps touchpad drivers on my Inspiron 7720 so I could upgrade to Win 8.1, but now I have an issue using the spacebar and hand-tool shortcut in Photoshop.

When I hold the spacebar down to drag the screen, the mouse pointer changes to a hand but I cannot drag.

I do vaguely remember a setting in the last version of the touchpad config tool that had to be changed to 'fix' this  but I cannot find the option on the latest one.

Any advice?

Getting fingerprint reader working on Dell Precision M4800

This is really frustrating!

After scouting & reading through the information available on the net and this whitepaper : Dell Precision Mobile Workstation M4800 Reimage Guide - precision-m4800-workstation_White Papers_en-us.pdf

I have understood the following :

1] As per the white paper there are no "DDPA | Access" packages available for the 5th generation precisions(M4800 & M6800). And accordingly, I cannot find any of the following drivers for the M4800 :

Data Protection | Access — Driver Package

Data Protection | Access – Middleware Package

Data Protection | Access – Application Package

2] without the DDPA the ControlVault(isolation fingerprint scan saves) and PBA (pre-boot authentication) feature for the embedded fingerprint swipe sensor should not work.

3] With a third party software, I should be able to use the fingerprint sensor to logon to windows.

I believe the Broadcom FMA(Fingerprint management application) should be able to achieve this. Here are the steps followed :

Although I get a successful enroll, If I try to log on using the fingerprint recognition, "A match for the fingerprint was not found in the fingerprint store" every single time.

The only logical conclusion I could make is that the control vault is looking in the ControlVault Storage(separate from the OS storage) but since ControlVault is not available without DDPA no fingerprint stores are found.

Am I right? If yes, any way to circumvent this?

And, will there be a "DDP Access" package release for the M4800?

TIA,

ThiningMonkey

Inspiron 17r hard drive issues

I got my Inspiron 17r around Christmas time last year, and just this past month my programs and applications are suddenly freezing or stuttering. In task manager, it seems that the disk section of task manager jumps up to 100% full, and with really low values, compared to it normally having high values and low percentages. Here I have two pictures of the task manager, the top one showing at 100% with .1 MB/s being used, and the bottom one shows almost 10 MB/s being used at only 63%. Also,  my system failed the Targeted read test, and SMART Short Self Test. I rebooted my computer in diagnostics mode, and got this error here:

ERROR: 2000-0142

Validation 100290

Hard drive S/N S2W2J90C831747 short self test unsuccessful

What should I do to fix this, or do I need the hard drive replaced? A dell employee's response would be enormously helpful

Dell E6530 Backlit Keyboard Compatibility

During a recent search and buy for an E6530 backlit keyboard replacement I found the US keyboards were either (a) not available at the time, or (b) too expensive.

Looking at the keyboard itself they struck me as being similar to the ones used in other Dell models.  A little research turned up a possibility from the E6520, M4600, and M6600 lines.   I ended up ordering one with the part number "HG3G3", also written as "0HG3G3".  The keyboard installed and works perfectly.

Here's an external URL for other who may be wanted to upgrade their Latitude E6530 to a backlit keyboard.  This URL searches US keyboard part number.  Other countries has similar possibilities as well using part numbers for the respective region / language keyboard.

Keyboard Maintenance:

Here are some enhanced instructions for use when disconnecting / reconnecting the flat ribbon cable used to connect the keyboard to the chassis. They were developed from my own experience today performing the keyboard swap.  I have found the standard Dell Latitude E6530 Owner's manual instructions to be sorely lacking in detail.  However, you should read and understand the owner's manual as well when using the instructions below.

Please bear in mind I am a private person and have never been a Dell employee.  But I have many years working on Dell systems of all types including laptops from the D600 up to the current Latitude and Precision laptops.  This includes completely stripping and building a chassis.

Keyboard Connector Note: Both keyboard connectors, on the system side and on the keyboard side, use flip style latch mechanisms to secure the cable in the connector.   When dis-connecting the flat white ribbon cable use your fingernail or a small plastic spudger to lift the latch before removing the ribbon cable.  When removing the ribbon cable, the cable is slid out of the connector.  On the keyboard side the ribbon cable is also held in place by a small amount of adhesive.  See note and pictures below.

Disconnection Note:  When removing the keyboard, disconnect the cable from the system side first.  Wait until the keyboard is free from the system to work on removing the cable from the keyboard side connector.

System Side, Keyboard Ribbon Cable Removal:

To disconnect the ribbon cable from the system side:

Flip up the connector latch to release the cable.  Then slide the ribbon cable out of the connector.

Keyboard Side, Keyboard Ribbon Cable Removal:

The ribbon cable on the keyboard side connector is secured to the keyboard using three things:

  • A short 2 or 3 inch strip of yellow Kapton tape (1'4 inch width) covering the main  ribbon connector, as well as another connector and second ribbon cable.
  • The connector latch for the ribbon cable connector.
  • Adhesive on the back of the main keyboard ribbon cable near the connector latch.

Remove the yellow Kapton tape first.  It is suggested that you peel the tape away starting from the left side (furthest from the number pad) and work your way to the right side.  The reason is there is another piece of tape and connector that you will want to leave in place.  Working from left to right will allow you to remove only the yellow tape from the main ribbon connector and and ribbon cable, while leaving the other tape and connector unaffected.  When removing the Kapton tape you may have to use you fingers to hold the other components in place.

When you remove the Kapton tape, please reserve the tape for reuse on the new keyboard, unless you have a roll of this stuff to put some new tape in place.

Next, flip up the connector latch to release the cable.  The cable will be loose.  But the it will stay in place because of the small amount of adhesive on the back of the ribbon cable.

Next, slowly and carefully  peel the main keyboard ribbon cable away from the keyboard.   When doing so you will need to use your fingers on the back of the keyboard to hold down the plastic the ribbon cable is adhered to.

Keyboard Reassembly:

Keyboard Connector Reassembly Note:  The ribbon cable needs to slide into place for the keyboard connector on the system side, and on the keyboard side.  Only after the cable is slid into place under a very small guide lip on the connector can the connector latch be successfully closed.  Here are a few picture showing the connector and cable on the keyboard side with the connector unlatched.

Keyboard Connector Reassembly Note:  Connect the keyboard ribbon cable to the keyboard first before finishing assembly to the rest of the system.

Keyboard Reassembly:

To reassemble, reverse the previous procedures note above.   When reassembling the keyboard side, insert the cable into the connector first before adhering the ribbon cable to the back of the keyboard.

I hope the alternative part number and  the enhanced keyboard maintenance instructions have help your quest to improve or repair your Dell laptop.

Inspiron 17R 5720 Possible hard drive crash

I think my hard drive may have crashed.  The laptop won't boot up past the Dell logo screen.  The only message I get on that screen is "Repairing Disk Errors.  This may take over an hour to complete".  I left it running for a while and when i came back it went back to the "Diagnosing your PC" message.  I was able to run the Dell diagnostic and got this message about the hard drive:

Error Code 2000-0142

Validation 60654

Msg: Hard Drive 0 - S/N etc

Short self test unsuccessful

The computer may have been dropped in the last few weeks.  I'd like to know how I can resolve this and (possibly) retrieve any data that may be recoverable.

I think my warranty expires on the 18th of December.

Thanks!

Hello, I've had this laptop for a while now and from first day it reached high temps but I thought it was normal a lot of people seemed to be having same temperatures but now playing through older games.. and paying closer eye to the temps, I noticed that no matter what game I play the gpu and cpu temp will eventually reach 90 + degrees... and doesn't matter on what settings as well.

In comparison : Bioshock infinite on High settings reaches 90 degrees on both

League of legends at lowest settings reaches 90 degrees

Age of mythology (Very old title with very low demands) can also reach 90 degrees

So no matter what game I play as long as I play it for a while it will reach 90 degrees + The only difference is the speed it reaches those temps.

I was thinking, would it be possible that someone messed up the thermal paste and it needs re-doing?

It keeps crashing and saying :

Edit: Temps at idle 52 - 56 degrees, room temp around 18-20 degrees

XPS L502X sudden freezing and shutdown/restart

Ok, so i have a XPS L502x that is having issues when I'm using my dedicated graphics card (Nvidia Geforce GT 540m) to run games such as Skyrim, League of legends, Spore, and Fallout. While playing these games using my GPU my computer will either freeze and making a buzzing sound through the speakers that requires a hard shutdown or black out and restart. Most things (and some games) I can get away with using just my integrated card and have no issues, but i got this computer for the gpu and really want to play more demanding games (ie: skyrim) that my integrated card cant handle. This issue only shows up while playing games. I have already tried cleaning with air, running dell diagnostics tests, and updating all the BIOS/drivers.  Anyone know any fixes i can try? Or should I look into replacing a piece of hardware since I don't want to buy a new computer? My computer is not under warranty anymore.

could it be overheating? If so what can I do to prevent that? I have tried lowering the graphics settings on games to help with that, but the solution is always only temporary.
