Inspiron 15 5000 series: /what about a cd drive?

I just purchased a new laptop - I didn't think to determine whether or not there was a CD/DVD drive on the computer.  I assumed this was a given.  Now I don't know how to install 2-year old software that is on CDs.  I can download it but have to pay for it again!  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Dell WD15 Dock - problem connecting VGA monitor

I have Dell Precision 5520 laptop connected to Dell WD15 dock.

There is a Dell U3011 2560x1600 display connected to MiniDP of the dock.

The laptop display works in 1920x1080 mode, in order to get DPI similar to the one on U3011 (that's on purpose I'm fine with that).

Today I tried adding the third display with 1280x1024 resolution connected to VGA of the dock.

It doesn't work. The third display gets detected by the Ubuntu display settings, but it can't be turned on. It works only if I unplug U3011.

It is also possible to run all 3 displays in mirror mode, but not in extended desktop mode.

Is it a hardware limitation (Intel graphics in Precision, WD15 dock) or just problem with Intel Linux graphic drivers?

BTW: Nvidia card is turned off.

From  the WD15 and laptop specs it looks like the config I'm trying to do should be supported:

- 1920x1080 builtin laptop screen
- 2560x1600 through WD15 and miniDP
- 1280x1024 through WD15 and VGA

Any ideas, what I can try?

Thanks,

Piotr

Thunderbolt docking station and BIOS power warning

I have several Dell 5510 Precision series with the Thunderbolt USB-C adaptor. Each 5510 is plugged into a Dell K17A docking station powered by a Dell 130W power supply. When I connect the docking station via its USB-C connection to the 5510 laptop, I get a BIOS warning that it only sees 95W of the 130W. But the battery charges and the laptop runs. I can turn off the power warning in the BIOS (which is current) but I worry about powering the 5510's Nvidia video card and other components if the BIOS is not seeing all 130 watts.

Plugging in the 130W psu supplied with the laptop has no such BIOS error.

Why does the Dell docking station K17A not see the Dell power supply? Is it throttling it?

Dell XPS 15 9560 Getting error with display dongles: "USB Device not recognized or Malfunctioned"

I have two different display dongles, one is a usb-c to hdmi/vga adapter and one is a usb 3.0 to vga external graphics card. I have tried both of these devices on other computers and they work just fine but when I try with me Dell XPS 15 9560 I get the "USB device not recognized" error, I beleive it is error 43. I plugged the usb-c adapter into a Lenovo Yoga 910 and it work immediately without installing any drivers so I don't think it is a driver issue. I have found forums with people updating all of the usb ports in device manager and disable power saving mode and I've tried them all, nothing works. The only common "fix" that I haven't been able to try is changing the wifi power output from 100% to 75% and I haven't done this because my machine has the Killer wifi card which doesn't have this option in device manager. Help please.

Precision M6600 fan problem

Hi,

After not using my M6600 for a couple of years, I have decided to give it some relatively intensive computation to do. However, I can hear the fan at full speed for a couple of seconds, then stopping for another couple of seconds, and so on without interruption.
As you can see from the screenshot below, the fan speed closely follows the CPU temperature (as one would expect), and they both go up and down in very short cycles of large amplitude, from 64 celsius to 91 celsius (which seem too high).

I have updated the BIOS, but the problem persists. Do you know what I should do?

Dell Inspiron i5559 - White spots / Dead pixels

0

I truly appreciate you (Dell) for making great products and serving well. In last October, I bought a Dell Inspiron i5559 Signature Edition Laptop from Microsoft Store Online. The device has reached my expectations and worked very well. But after few months, my LCD got some unknown spots. I really tried to remove those spots, but I failed. Some videos on internet are saying this is something called 'dead pixels'. But I'm very hesitated about this, because mine was a little different. It only shows on black screen.

As I said above, there is (unknown) spots on my screen. I think it's probably because of keyboard.

And more interestingly, these spots only occur on black.

Windows Tablet

I recently ordered and received a Dell Windows laptop tablet. I've used it twice as a tablet only. The keys are so small that my iPad stylus' don't fit. I also touch a key and there is no reaction. It's as if you need a pointed, firm stylus point. I've looked online but can't find one. Any suggestions where I could buy one?

Dell XPS 15 9560 current model and 9550 past model.

In reading this forum and feedback over the last week or so pertaining to the XPS 15 products and the Battery  I decided before my wife and I each plunk down $2300 each for new laptops I better find out if replacement batteries are available....  Well,   after being on the Phone with 5 different people today at Dell in both Sales and tech Support...  The Batteries Are Not Available.  That makes the Dell xps 15 the smallest door stop in my house.

We started to look for replacements of our current Laptops and did alot of reading on the Dell XPS 15 with the 7700 HQ processor, 16 gb of ram and 512GB of SSD storage.... 4GB of Video ram and a 1050 processor.    The unit requires a 97Whr battery.    So,  I figure I'd check in to see what the cost of the replacement battery was and if it was available if we wanted to buy a spare..   I was floored by the amount of time it took to the the answer and what I was told... but in short here it is...

My first attempt was thru on line chat.. I was told that the battery was discontinued and that a reconditioned 43 wat would fit the Unit..  My first comment was what the heck do you do with a 43whr battery in this powerful laptop... but no matter how I asked the question the answer was the same...  So I inquired about one for a previous year 84whr battery and I got the same answer...    That tells me something is wrong they would not even give me a price at all.

Next I got on the phone this morning and was transferred from Sales to Tech Support to parts sales, back to Tech support and I finally asked for a Manager.. None was available.... Of course they were very sorry...  The Bottom line is that no matter who I spoke to I was told that there is no part numbers in the system and no stock available and they have no idea when they may become available..I was told to call back in a couple of weeks..     Are you Kidding Me, what if I had bought one, the battery failed and now I'd have a $2500 laptop that had to stay plugged in all the time.

Again  I specifically asked and said this model is still in production and on sale on the website, a current product you mean accessory or replacement batteries are not available..  again the answer was NO!  It is not a user replaceable part.. So, I then asked OK  If I had one and needed to have it repaired would you send me a battery then..    I was told NO!   I could send the unit it under warranty .I asked how long it would take and could not get an answer..

I'm done with this... We are staying as far away form the XPS 15 asI can .. I just can't believe that a company the size of Dell (both business or home)  does not have repair parts for a brand new unit or a unit that is only 1 year old...    All i can Say if buyer Beware...   I guess in the long run,  we just saved our selves from having a $5,000 investment in two worthless portables..  you could not even sell it if you wanted to without a battery..

Sorry for the Rant but Common Dell  you have to have better sense than this!

Reinstall Windows 7

Hi DELL

Last week I tried to reinstall my Windows 7 on mi Laptop, but I didn't know that I had to do with your own OS (an OS version exclusive for each DELL product). I did a clean OS reinstall with a windows 7 CD, but muy product Key is invalid for that version, and now I cannot go back.

I questioned Microsoft about that and they said I need the Windows 7 ISO of the OS version for my Laptop that is exclusive for the product (Latitude E6400). They said too, that DELL had to asist me in this problem.

I need to download the Windows 7 version for a Laptop Latitude E6400. I had installed "Dell System Detect" to confirm the model.

What can I do?

Thank for all.

How to estimate XPS 9360 damaged from shipping?

0

Hello fellow Dell users,

Apologies if this is not the best place to ask this question, I didn't know where else to ask. I shipped a refurbished Dell back to an authorized reseller, who said it was damaged by USPS' shipping.

The seller identified the need to replace the following:

- a full bottom chassis and palm rest. It may also need a new keyboard/mousepad.

- There may be additional internal damage and the warranty is now void.

Luckily, I had insured it with USPS, but they want an "estimate of the repair costs from a reputable dealer." The seller could not put a price on it and only identified the damage he could see.

It was a 2017 DELL XPS 13 9360 7TH GEN I7-7560U 16GB 512GB SSD INFINITY QHD+ TOUCH 640 10 that was refurbished and had NBD warranty till May 2018. I bought it on ebay. Never again.

I don't have the laptop since I shipped it back to seller, so I can't really get an estimate...any one able to estimate damage this way or able to point me in right direction? I am in Los Angeles but laptop is in PA!

Thanks in advance!

Dell XPS 15 9560 has wrong hardware?

My laptop is Dell XPS 15 9560, i7-7700hq, GTX1050, 16gb RAM, 512 gb SSD. I downloaded HWiNFO64 to check my laptop hardware, but it is showing that my laptop contains Intel HD 610. My understanding was that the i7-7700hq came with Intel HD 630 graphics, not 610. Also, since i7-7700hq is kabylake, why do I have so many skylake devices??

Inspiron 17R 7720 "Your Battery is Temporarily Disabled", Battery LED Flashing Orange

One of my Inspiron 17R 7720 SE laptops (I have three) hadn't been used for a while so I plugged in a charger to charge up the battery. The computer was turned off, not being used at the time. A while later I noticed the battery status LED on the front of the computer case was flashing 4 orange flashes, then white, then repeat.

When I started the computer I got a start-up message "Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off the unit and try again when the unit is back to operational temperature".

Well the unit WAS at "operational temperature" since it was a cold start. When I run the F2 Setup, under battery health I get the same message.

I tried using a 2nd battery, same error, and a 2nd AC adapter with the second battery, still same error. The computer operates normally off the AC adapter, shows the battery at 100% charged, but shuts off immediately when the AC adapter is disconnected.

What is the problem and how do I re-enable my battery?

XPS M1530 laptop: re-image/reinstall to OEM state

hi all, thanks for the help in advance.

last week i was cleaning out a closet and ran across an old XPS M1530 laptop i had forgotten about. when i fired it up it loaded windows vista business, but unfortunately neither myself nor anyone in the family can remember the admin password. no password, no accessing the machine. no password, no accessing the machine = none of the fixes for reformatting/re-imaging/refreshing the OS to OEM factory state will work. so, i am left with three questions for you all.

1. is there a key combination i can use to access the integrated recovery partition/software without entering windows? -no password no entering windows, i am not concerned about any data on the machine.

2. anyone know of anywhere i might purchase/download a copy of the original image or installation software for this machine?  i seem to remember that a couple of years ago i found a site in the UK i believe that had legacy copies achieved and you could purchase, download, burn to disk, install from disk OEM installations.  worked well for an old gateway i had at the time.

thanks again for your help.

Refurbished Latitude E7440 - CPU and fan thermal control problem

0
0

I brought a refurbished E7440 (Core i7-4600U).
From the service tag it was intended for Sweden.

I have 2 thermal control problems:
- once the CPU reaches 75 deg C, the CPU is throttled to ~1.5Ghz
- the fan once it starts, it never stops. I tested in a cooled room (20 C), and the fan stops ONLY when the CPU reaches ~35 deg C.
These are thermal values indeed valid for nordic countries.

But I am in Romania. My previous E7440 (EMEA) had CPU throttling at ~90 deg C and fan off at ~50 deg C.

Is there any way to convince the BIOS/EC to use other thermal values ?

Thank you,

Marcel.

Dell XPS 9530 HDD Replacement

Hello

I am wondering what physical HDD dimensions XPS 9530 supports. Due to the bad health of the old HDD I need to replace it. For instance, can I use Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000LM015 2.5 in my Dell? It is 7mm in height and seems to be the only 2Tb model of such a compact size. Are there any other HDD models supported?

My service tag is 40TGL12
