What stylus works with this laptop?

dell latitude e5540 solid power light, no other lights on, nothing on LCD

I have a Latitude e5540 that doesn't turn on (at least not easily). But when it does turn on, it can stay on for weeks/months as long as it stays in sleep mode. This has happened three times now. If I shut down or reboot the computer, it doesn't turn on again -- or at least it's very difficult to get it on and it seems to randomly correct itself and turn back on.

Here are the symptoms when it doesn't boot up:

  • Screen is blank.
  • The Power light on the power button and edge of laptop are both solid white, no other lights on. Power light remains on as long as it's getting power from the battery or power cable. If I press the power button to turn it off, it sounds like it's going through a shutdown process of some sort -- not like windows shutting down, but it doesn't immediately turn off. The fans will spin up for a few seconds, then it will power off after another few seconds.
  • When power button is pressed, the fans turn on momentarily then spin down after a second. But they will randomly turn back on for a few seconds here and there as long as the power remains on.
  • HDD sounds like it's on. HDD light on the edge of the laptop is off.

Troubleshooting so far with no noticeable difference:

  • Removed the battery and power cable, held power button to drain residual power and tried to connect just the power cable and turn it on. Didn't work.
  • Connected to an external monitor via HDMI to TV -- once the laptop powers on, the TV detects a new source, but nothing visible on the TV. I also tried pressing the FN+F8 (screen mode button) to switch through the modes -- didn't work.
  • Removed and reseated the RAM. I also tried inserting another stick of RAM (although I'm not sure if that RAM was working) and it showed a different set of lights. Solid Wifi, Solid HDD, Blinking Battery light. From what I could tell that means the RAM isn't good. When I switched back to the original RAM, it went back to just a Solid Power light and no other lights.
  • Removed the HDD, connected it to a different computer and ran tests on it using HD Tune. Nothing wrong with it.
  • The last time it booted into Windows, I checked the event logs and I didn't see any errors that would indicate a hardware failure.
  • Disconnected the CMOS battery and reconnected it.
  • Pressed <D+Power> -- showed me a screen test. The screen turned various different colours then the computer turned off after less than a minute of cycling through colours
  • .Pressed <Fn+Power> -- didn't show anything on screen, but the diagnostic lights were different. This time, the Power light was solid, Battery light blinking and everything else off. According to the LED Diagnostic page it means "Memory failed to initialize or memory is unsupported."
  • I tried NINE (9) RAM chips in case the original RAM was bad. Pressing Fn+Power for each RAM module resulted in a different diagnostic light combination than the original RAM module that came with the laptop: Solid HDD light, Solid Wifi light and blinking Battery which means "The memory modules are detected but has encountered an error."
  • I tried downloading the latest BIOS firmware on a bootable USB drive but it didn't seem to do anything. I tried powering on the computer, but since it's not responding and nothing on screen, I can't tell if it's doing anything.

I'm running out of ideas. I found diagnostic light information somewhere but it doesn't say anything about just a solid white power light with nothing on screen.

Any troubleshooting tips?

Dell Precision 7520 - Screen Issues

Hi,

I just got a Dell Precision 7510 laptop and the screen is very difficult to read text on.  It is blurr and washed out.  I updated all the drivers and Windows 10 Pro and nothing looks any better.  If I make the text look better the screen is too dark for video.  If I get it right for video the text is blurry and unreadable.  It generally looks blurry. It generally looks washed out.  It's a 15" screen but I can read my 13" MacBook Pro screen better.  Maybe it is just an overall quality difference.

Has anyone had similar issues with this series of laptop?

Couldn't reboot or start my laptop with the fully charged battery

I couldn't reboot or start my laptop with the fully charged battery. However, when the laptop is running, disconnect the power cord, and the laptop will keep running with the battery.

Under BIOS, the battery status is excellent.

Is it the battery issue?

Thanks,

Occasionally when I leave my Inspiron 17 5000 laptop for some time (no programs running that I can see) the keyboard freezes and I need to shut down with the on/off button. When I restart it it asks if I want to run diagnostics which show no problem. It seems to be random.

Running laptop on AC power long term

I have a Dell Latitude E5520, and my plan for this is to use it as the main computer in my shop, which means it will be used infrequently, will be plugged into A/C normally, but occasionally will be used away from the desk, and as such will be running on battery.

My question is - should I leave the battery in it, or take it out while it is my "workstation".  Or will it be OK to leave the battery in it while there?

Hello,

Does anyone know if we can stack both an M2 NVME PCIE SSD with a 2.5 SATA unit ?

In the pictures it seems that adding a 2.5 unit prevent the use of the PCIE port ...

Also could you confirm that the PCIE 2x port works with NVME ?

Thanks !

Active Pen (PN338M) for Inspiron 13 7000 - 7378 with Windows 10

I am wondering if anyone knows if the PN338M Active Pen is actually compatible with the Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 (7378).  The website says it is compatible with 7378, but a reviewer has said that it does NOT work with Windows 10 - which is what the 7378 has always come with (as far as I know).

So, is the PN338M active pen compatible with 7378 with Windows 10?

Thanks for your help.

HEAT PROBLEM - Dell XPS 13 9365

I have a XPS 13 9365 2-in-1 laptop that I bought couple of months back, gets very hot within few mins.  Even power adapter gets hot while charging as well as sleep mode.  Keys are hot to the touch.

I have power option as "Dell - automatically balances performance with energy consumption".

Couple of weeks back there was BIOS update that crashed my laptop. Service fixed and asked me not to update BIOS in the future.

I am pretty disappointed with Dell XPS. I had a $500 laptop that never had issues for over 6 years.

D3100 Docking Station not recognizing monitors

Team-

I have a Latitude E7470, connected to my D3100 dock via USB3. I have a Dell E2317H Monitor connected to the D3100 via DP. Works fine having it setup as my main display and extending to my laptop. The problem is the Laptop and or the D3100 are not recognizing the 2 other E2317H Monitors that are connected to the 2 HDMI ports with HDMI to DP cables. The OS kind of detects the monitors but will not push video to them. I have tried every which way I can think of with the OS and the Display Link software and have no joy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Latitude E5540 won't turn on.

Hello,

My Latitude E5540 won't turn on.

I bought a new adapter (the old one was broken), but the E5540 still will not turn on. I measured the new adapter: 19,8 volts.

I opened the E5540 and checked the voltage at the white plug at the end of the dc jack cable: 0 Volts!!

I removed the white plug from the motherboard and measured again: about 19,8 volts, so the DC jack cable is not broken.

What could be the problem: a fuse or is the motherboard dead?

I hope someone can help me, please!

Regards, Blaauwtje

Hello,
After changing the hard drive of the computer and doing a factory reinstall the computer starts and I have the following message:
The AC power adapter can not be determined.
The battery may not charge.
The system will adjust the perfomance to match the power available.

Please connect to Dell 130 w AC adapter or greater for the best system performance.
Strike the F3 key (before F1 or F2 key).
Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility.

The computer starts by giving me a PXE-E53 error according to the forum you must deactivated integrated NIC what I did, then I have this message:

Reboot and select proper Boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I put the hard drive first boot but I still have the message telling me restart and select the appropriate Boot Device.

For 3 days I have been looking for a solution without finding a satisfying answer.

My client has to find the long time because no way to run this computer with a new drive and a factory operating system.
