Several times after waking up I have gotten repeating USB device not recognized messages. The message says "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

I haven't plugged in any USB devices since it was rebooted the last time.

It was happening again right now, but after a few minutes it eventually stopped.

I do not normally use it... & my big hands are always accidently hitting it when I'm typing and I get weird things.

Studio 1558 - Seemingly random standbys and black screens

Hello,

A couple of weeks after a mechanic from Dell came to fix some other problems, including the motherboard's built in graphics card, the power cable and the LCD screen, the laptop started to randomly go into standby mode. Gently wiggling the screen usually made it go back to normal, indicating it looks like a problem with the power cable again. Now I'm not sure whether it's hardware, but seeming as the laptop is not getting too hot and the Dell Diagnostics report no problems, I strongly believe it is. The temperature of the laptop is 55-60 C tops, for the graphics card, lower for everything else.

Seeming as everything has been replaced several months before the warranty expired, I can not contact Dell via mail again. I don't know exactly what was in the warranty, as I cannot find it anywhere anymore, but I reckon a defective replaced hardware part has at least 1 year warranty despite the general warranty. If so, how can I arrange for analyses and replacement, seeing as it is likely accidentally gone wrong during the mechanic's last visit?

Many thanks in advance, I really enjoy the laptop, and I would love to continue doing so for a couple of years if possible!

e7240 CONSTANT LOUD NOISE FROM FAN / VENTILATOR TURNING ALL THE TIME

We received 2 brand new E7240s directly from Dell, one for myself and one for my colleague. As soon as I turned it on to build it for my colleague, I noticed the machine was overheating and the fan was making a noise. Dell suggested a BIOS upgrade which didn't change anything. They then changed the heatsink, again this changed nothing and since then they changed the motherboard. My colleague has gone on holiday so I don't know if her issue has been resolved, however, my laptop from day one does not overheat (as obviously as it did for my colleague) BUT THE FAN TURNS ALL THE TIME. So much so that I think the person in the upstairs bedroom is using her hairdryer. Dell replaced the heatsink and the motherboard yesterday, I have done the same BIOS upgrade and the problem is even worse. As soon as I switch the thing on, the ventilator turns all the time making a loud noise. My previous model was the E6500 and I wasn't bothered by any noises it made.

The 7240 makes so much noise that I want to throw it out of the window Super Angry , seriously I am going to switch back to my 5 year old e6500 which is now very slow, I just can't take the constant hair dryer noise from the fan! I am waiting for Dell to get back to me but I don't see what else they can do.

I suspect there is a design problem with newer models, someone with a Latitude 13 Notebook has also mentioned it on the forums, also someone else with an e7240 states "I have noticed the fan running much of the time - it's quiet but you're aware it's spinning.  I am just setting it up though, so the CPU is fairly busy." A person with the e6320 states "And the fan is loud and turns itself on way too often".

Strange Error message:System Restore and System Files Integrity Check and Repair failed.

Suddenly these two error messages in the header occured the other night on my Inspiron Home premium running Windows 7. The error codes were; 0xlf and 0x490. There were links to click and these told me to, unfortunately, uninstall something that I don't remember. After that I was told to reinstall again. The result of this is that 1) all "favourites" with hundreds of genealogy addresses are gone, 2) all my e-mail accounts needed to be reinstalled 3) all my saved e-mails are gone 4) several programs - but not all - and files have disappeared and 5) perhaps something yet not discovered.

All this because of the two error messages whose origin and purpose I can't imagine.

Will you, please, help me by explaining what has happened and why and furthemore how to get all losses back?

Dell XPS 15 (9530) Flawed mSATA Setup

$

I have had my new XPS 15 for 4 days now, and overall it is a very impressive machine. I got the mid-range one (with 1TB HDD). However, I would like to let the community know about some issues I am having, and to post publicly that this particular machine is shipping with a flawed setup.

My model comes with 16GB system memory. It has a 32GB mSATA drive intended to be used for Intel Rapid Start and Intel Rapid Storage. The mSATA is partitioned with 8GB for Intel Rapid Start and 22GB for Intel Rapid Storage. However, Intel clearly documents that you need a partition equal in size to the system memory for Intel Rapid Start to work. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CDIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.intel.com%2Fsupport%2Fmotherboards%2Fdesktop%2Fsb%2Frapid_start_technology_user_guide_for_uefi1.pdf&ei=m1OHUpzGAdPpkAfE8YGIDg&usg=AFQjCNH7Rh6iQN6hSR0Ry3oBF6kGmxgjaA&sig2=e--yKMT7hoApFUI_7kMyEA This makes sense because what it is doing is writing an image of system memory to the SSD.

Consequently, Intel Rapid Start does not work on the midrange XPS 15 9530.. I noticed this because it starts slower than my old Inspiron 15 with its Crucial SSD.

Unfortunately, one cannot fix this by repartitioning the mSATA. If you dedicate 16GB on the mSATA to Intel Rapid Start, only 14GB remain for Intel Rapid Storage, which requires a minimum of 18.6 GB to work.

Dell needs to ship this model with a larger mSATA for both technologies to work.

Now I really would not care personally, as my intention was to recycle my 512GB Crucial M4 as a boot drive by performing a clean Windows install on it. This would allow me to dedicate the entire mSATA to Intel Rapid Start. Unfortunately, this system does not ship with Windows Install disks. And I can't seem to order one as Dell's system does not recognize my Service Tag. I've tried to use the factory reinstallation disks I made to reinstall on my SSD, but they won't let me reinstall to a smaller drive. I could destroy the final 6.96 recovery partition, shrink the main partition, and then clone the drive with Clonezilla, but my intention was to keep the original disk as backup, and the SSD would not be aligned properly.

Another issue I had was the McAfee firewall that came preinstalled prevented me from setting a second network to private. I uninstalled this after failing to find a solution. Windows Defender seems to be adequate antivirus, and its much easier to set the 2nd network to private with Windows firewall.

Overall I am very happy with my new computer, but I don't think I'll be really happy until I can switch back to SSD. I may solve this by ordering a 1TB Samsung EVO, but that puts me up to the price point of the top XPS 15 9530, and I didn't want to go there. And I would still have the alignment issue if I clone the drive. So hopefully my service tag will get recognized soon allowing me to order Windows reinstallation disks.

Dell M6300 FCM (Intel Turbo Memory Slot)

So I got board the other day and took a spare Dell 1500 WIFI card and some 2.4/5.8ghz a/b/g/n antennas and put it into the FCM port under the keyboard to see what would happen. Well I expected it to not see it at all but it did and it installed the drivers and its running correctly. The only problem i'm running into is that it cant see any wireless connections. Now its my understanding that the FCM was a USB based PCI-E instruction set and that's why I was thinking it would not work but the fact that it installed and is properly running minus the fact that it cant find any networks tells me that it is in fact a True PCI-E slot. Now I come to my question I know your not supposed to use WIFI cards in FCM ports but why would it read and install the card properly and not be able to find the network ? Also I have a Intel 6300 in the real WLAN slot and it has no issues finding WIFI so its not my laptops configurations. I have tested the card with the antennas in my M6300's WLAN slot to check if it was functioning properly and it is. Also does anyone know if I can use a WWAN card in my M6300's FCM Slot? That's Going to be my next project. Any info the you guys can give would be a god send because this little board moment just got crazy because its so close to working just one random problem I have never had. Thanks in advance.

Dell Inspiron 1720 win 7 with Asus USB-BT400 4.0 problem

I received today this Asus bluetooth adapter (Asus USB-BT400 4.0 via Amazon). After installing the drivers, i tryed to connect with different bluetooth devices and doesn't detect none of them. (TV, mobile phones, bluetooth headphones).

I have Dell Inspiron 1720 with Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I don't know what is the problem. First I saw ''base system device'' driver missing (in windows Device Manager), I install Ricoh Memory Card Drivers for Vista 32-Bit because I didn't find for win 7 32-bit. And it seams to disapper that problem with ''base system device driver'', but dosen't find my bluetooth devices.
Maybe somebody could help me!

P.S: When I'm trying to open ''Settings'' dosen't do anything.

Thanks in advance.

Inspiron 15R N5110 Experiencing Random Shut-downs and Refuses to Power Up

$

This is a fairly recent issue that has been occuring to me. I'm using my laptop and it just suddenly turns off. No shut down process, no error messages, it just simply turns off. I try to turn it back on by pressing the power button but it doesn't turn on. This has happened to me regardless of whether I have it plugged in with a charger or not.

After like 15-20 minutes I can turn the laptop back on, but it seems to be an ambiguous amount of time before this error happens again. Sometimes I can use the laptop just fine for hours on end, other times it doesn't last 5 minutes!

When my laptop is refusing to turn on, I tried plugging in my charger but the light indicator for the charger on my laptop didn't turn on. I know my charger works perfectly fine (used on a friend's laptop to check). Is this an error with my AC adaptor jack or is it some other problem?

My laptop is still under warranty and I just don't believe it's a hard drive error so I was wondering if anybody else had the same problem/found a solution.

Touchpad on Dell E6500 with Windows 7 cannot be turned off

Actually there is no visible touchpad application in device manager. No tab on HID-compliant or PS/2 Compatable mouse to change it. The F5/Fn function was tried. I have downloaded and used the following drivers and suggested fixes from various sites:

  • DELL_MULTI-DEVICE_A07_R262123,
  • DELL_TOUCHPAD----POINTING-ST_A11_R231736,
  • E6500-win7-A02-R296904,
  •  IPx86_1033_8.20.468.0,
  • R203578, R300780,
  • HP sp40715

Just naming the ones in my download file. This was not a problem until I had to get my computer reloaded due to some missing files after chopping out too many when removing some malware. (yes, the malware is gone) The only thing that changed was it went from 32-bit to 64-bit. It used to have a function that disabled the touchpad when a USB mouse was plugged in and it told me when it was in effect. This is also a problem with my boss' Dell Vostro using an Alps Touchpad. The IT depatrment has fixed the problem with his, but that didn't work with  mine.

And Dell states they do not have a solution to the problem as per this site.

24 hour home service warranty is worthless - DO NOT BUY

I turned in an issue on December 18. A nice man from India determined that the unit needed to come back to Dell for work. It took several days for the box to arrive. It came normal ground nothing faster. Same for return. OK I think it should come faster, but so far I am OK. After a few days I get a call saying that it needed parts. Another call saying parts were on back order. Another notice that the parts were coming. Then I get a call saying that they were going to send me a new refurbished system. That was a week ago. I was getting frustrated with no computer showing up. Got in touch again today and was told that no computer had been shipped. They then asked me if the configuration they were sending was OK (which is was), now they tell me it will take another 7-10 BUSINESS days to ship. BEST case it will be one month since I initialed the "next business day" complaint.

This is a warranty FAIL as far as I am concerned

XPS 12 screen doesnt rotate after upgrading to Windows 8.1+ plus other wobbles

Hello All

I took the plunge and updated to windows 8.1 on my XPS 12 last night, the first problem was the right click options missing from the desktop.
this was remedied by updating the drivers for the cypress touchpad. then I discovered no matter what I did the centrino wireless N 6235 card would not enable. so I removed this from the device manager and re-detected in windows this is currently stable however the Dell Support site recommends updating it, so I have downloaded the driver but when I try to install it I am told this cannot be installed on my system?

more annoying than anything is the auto-rotate function on my flip screen isnt working any more....

Any ideas?

I have a dell studio 1537 laptop and have no power whatsoever. All I am getting is two solid lights on the volume down and volume up and the mute button is blinking....

I have googled this extensively and found no real answer or solution, lots of people have this problem but no one seems to have posted their outcome..

The best I can see is the processor is at fault but is there anyway to test the processor without just buying a new one....

PS, the screws on the processor, should they be down tight...?

Does anyone know of a way to repair or replace this with something higher quality? I haven't had my laptop long and the chrome is flaking off and it has such a sharp edge it cut my finger nail just by brushing up against it wrong.

I love this laptop, but the chrome strip is driving me crazy...

Dell n7010 shutting down with no notice.

Hi, I have an issue with my n7010 shutting down before windows even gets chance to boot fully. I think it's related to a thermal check/ event as the more times I try to boot it the shorter time it takes to shut down. Would appreciate any suggestions of what to try from this point. I have a canon order but the current one spins freely now that its been cleaned out. Thanks

My L701XPS "burns" while I'm playing!!!

Hi,

I'm Giancarlo, from Italy, and I bought my L701XPS about 3 years ago.

I've always been really happy to have bought this kind of laptop (technically speaking) until I used it  to play to a very "hard" game!

After I add to the machine 2 X8 DDR3 4GB SODIMM RAM banks, to help the laptop system to support all different kinds of activities I usually do with it, it happened while I'm playing, after 10/15 minutes, his temperature goes over 30°C!!!

Imagine that I must turn off it to let the temperature decrease instead of "burning" my hands!!!

I understand that my laptop isn't a game consolle, but it is not so regular that there is not a system protection or a internal strong enough fun that avoids the temperature goes on until those levels.

I'm sure someone could help me!

Do you think it's better to install a stronger internal fun inside the laptop, to buy an external "funning" base or to pass directly to another kind of machine???(...such as alienware DELL version??)

Waiting for your answers...

Giancarlo
